Does anyone have the full video this is on, including the warmups? I used to have a copy of this video back in the 90's before I lost it to someone who borrowed it.
at least 3 of those guys if not 4. My brother (contra bass) played in VK in '93 so, I recognized them all the next year. The instructor (Scott Johnson) was with SCV the year before and then took the BD job, (Tom Float) who was with BD in 93 went to VK in '94. I was in SCV "B" line in '94 So, we had Jim Casella bail from our line and take the SCV percussion caption head job. . . and Mike Apodaca taught us while Jim wrote the book. . . it's was so much musical chairs that year, I was just trying to figure out who everyone's instructors were going to be. I had front row seats to every California show '92-96. I did a full tour all the way to finals in '94 with SCV 'b' I miss those days (back in the day)
Michael - Awesome, though I believe Tom Float left BD January of 1991, took the VK gig 1992-94. Ironically enough Paul Rennick stepped in 1991 for BD and then joined Tom Float at VK, was there I think from 94-95 before Mike Jackson took over VK drumline 96-97.
Does anyone know who the drum major was at this time??? I wonder if he ever joined the Blue Devils after he graduated from high school. I think he did but what year??? I know one of the trumpet players from my marching band joined the Blue Devils in 1995 or 1996.
smd ftb ok he must have done drum and bugle corps truly in the Summer after school was over as I believe he graduated from high school in 1994 I believe. He was an excellent drum major for my high school marching band that was for sure. He went from a great award wining marching band to an award winning drum and bugle corps. Nice job James.
smd ftb Nice and awesome. I also remember Dave Glide always around the drum line helping them out at my high school along with a guy named Mike. The guy who did the drill writing for my high school was and still is doing it for the Blue Devils.
that was truly a special line. I was in the stands for finals that night and when the snares ripped that crescendo roll - it was the cleanest thing I'd ever heard. I was watching that show with a couple of guys from SCV that had won drums the night before for semis and they said "wow, that was the cleanest shit they'd ever heard"
Lines these days still have this attention to musicality and executions along with their *extremely demanding* body movement. You are watching the wrong stuff and/ or deaf.
man sticks. the short taper made the stick beeffier at the base of the tip and weight of the stick heavier in the front. the drums would make a different sound because of this. awesome sound live. The roll in "Day Danse" @1:51 sounded incredible live!
Yes we used MS2's in 94. But we had them special made to be heavier than the normal MS2 line if you can believe it. Not only were they supposed to be heavier, but stronger and more resistant to breaking. Didn't work though, we chewed at least a couple pairs a week each. True story, Roger took the first pair out of the box at Mars (must have been around May/June before tour), played a roll on his snare and released with a shot. The right stick broke clean in two almost as if someone sawed it in half. Never seen a stick break like that before or since.
94 and 97. Best bd lines to exist!
Hey whoever wrote/worked on this music that year 🤟 i can hear the full show in my head watching this. What a team you guys had to be
Right! I can hear the horns in my head just watching the battery parts.
This is still the best snare line i’ve ever heard and I was in 4th grade when this was filmed... This crappy old vhs is proof to me....
I would taking this over anything BD has put out in the last like 8 years.
With the exception of 2012.
YES. This brings back memories of when Drumlines knew what "Clean" meant. CHRIST THIS IS GOOD.
yeah, 94' Devils was a a breakthrough in DCI . . . I remember seeing alot of those guys in the snare line at VK the year before.
Legend tells of a time when jesus was center snare for the Devs...
I still find it funny Roger Carter is now with the Bluecoats.
Probably the cleanest bd has ever been.
I keep coming back to these older videos, for one thing, the parts are much more musical than they are these days.
Please stop this nonsense
George Collins is also in that line (co host of DCCP)
4:08 still the gold standard in roll cleanliness.
good ol beats!
I've heard soloists that weren't as tight as this entire line.
Sexiest sticks-in in the history of this activity at 2:20
yep. this is the most clean snareline i have ever heard

Thanks. That certainly is a big chunk of it!
Three years late but I gotchu fam

Very defined.
This is best snare line ever and forever
you need to check out cavaliers 2000.
Abhinay Penumarthi They're good, but BD 94 is legendary. Cavies 04 snare line is one of my fav.
This line and the 96 blue devils line are my all time...haven't heard anything better.
@@LuisAlvarez-yz6qo I love the 96 BD snare line. Give me them, the 99 BD bass line and the 01 BD quad line and that is my dream line.
They’re tied with 97 snare line
@jeffe77 I think: Mike R., Roger L., and George C. - I think that was it.
Especially at 0:32, that part was used for the 3rd or 4th mvt of Fiddler on the Roof
CLEAN!!!!!!
Back when clean was clean
Back when there was no dancing around either......
Thank god I'm not the only one who abhors that change. Dancing is for dancers. @@jonphillips3804
Man, such good interp at :07
@TyAllinger - Oops, I was thinking '92. You'd know.
Vertical tap heights at these tempos with nothing but wrist can only be the result of sorcery...
flamingtatertot and tendinitis
@erockadus Which cats marched with VK the yr before?

Incorrect. Roger marched VK. Know your facts. I'm 2nd snare from the right and was roommates with Rog.

James Gulke. I think was there 93-98

@@cmqguy yep he got three rings. 94, 96 and 97

@@cmqguy Todd Ryan?
Yes because having the drumline park and play for 2 minutes to play a drum feature is so much better. :-P
This drum vibe doesn't exist anymore
Roger C marched 89, George C 90 91, Mike R 91 92, Roger Dale Ladd Jr 92 93 and Ty 93.
Just to clarify. I don't want to take credit for this vid, I downloaded it a while back and posted it here.
Yeah,, they used T Harnesses for the 94 and 95 season
VHS and hi 8 digitized absolute crap then.. wish the video was as clean as this line
.....Ike Jackson?
Yes, Bass 4.
oh rodger. yes.
I wasn't even born when this happened. Lol
Try Star of Indiana circa 1993, Closer of the show.

Michael Martinez Before anyone gets upset, we won field percussion at semis in 93. And yes that crescendo roll still makes me shake my head. Cheers
@chutdigadut as clean as scott johnson's remote control 94 line? fuh get about it!
wait...just how old IS Scott Johnson?
MoustacheCloud Well he aged out in 77, so assuming he was 21 then. 38? Now, 60?
He aged out in ‘79. I marched with him for four years.
If he aged out in 79 at 21, he's probably now 66
new name for those stick heights: "chin ups" hahaha
this vid is soo full of win
snare rolls here sound like paper, and yet still they are oh so clean. Sorry timmie and the 09 gang, as good as you are, you get ousted
God! I miss this attention to detail to musicality and execution compared to paying attention to unnecessary body movement!
Lines these days still have this attention to musicality and executions along with their *extremely demanding* body movement. You are watching the wrong stuff and/ or deaf.
@@DMIXMusic LMAO!
perfect vodon!
What?! Did they travel to the future and stole the idea?
Lol nice! When bases were watered down! But the cleanliness is unmistakble
DUH
bass visual 3:48-3:50 anybody else notice? haha
1:35 and on.... clean as a germophobes rear end
they so stole this from brigs 2007
@jeffe77 I think the center snare (roger) marched vk prior to BD
BD will never sound like this again unless they go back to using vicfirth MS2(as in this vid)
Yes, the sticks are what make them sound like this...lol

haha this is just STUPIDLY clean.... nobody is this clean anymore :-(
I think the equipment sucks now. Those dynasty snare drums and tenors have awful sound quality.
