      @DECLAN DOUGAN Respectfully disagree. What you call artistic development changed the activity into something less appealing. And no, it would not have died. I get it. Things evolve over time. It's inevitable. However, evolution doesn't always result in something better.

    I marched Cadets that year and BD flew east early in the season and we toured together and had some off time in Boston. They were such an incredible drum corps and great people. It was an honor to lose to them every night. I think it was DCI East when there was no full retreat and I got to see them perform their victory arc. This was a great horn line, even by BD standards.
    We performed Cadillac of the Skies with them at our home show. I used to have a picture of the giant mixed horn arc with one Cadet, one Devil etc.

      Richspanky72. Starting the tour on the east coast is one of the things that made this year so special. That was a great couple of weeks and Boston free day just capped it off. Thanks for that memory.

      tplunkett3 Not only do I remember this show verbatim, I had the pleasure of being around the guys who were a part of this amazing ensemble. wether they knew it or not my two years @west Covina high were some my few happy memories in life. Thanks for being apart of that sir. I remember really admiring how you treated your younger brother and kinda wishing I had one that marched. You and Ron Friedline were super dope. Most likely don't remember me but Thy Doan was drum major, Tiffany Knight was my next door neighbor. Eric. 95-97. I played keys in the jazz band.

    Drumcorp today is nothing like it was in the early 90's. I remember 94 was the re-birth of the BD dynasty. That was the year Todd Ryan and Scott Johnson joined the teaching staff. BD hornline and drums from 94-97 were simply the best.

      Not coincidentally, this is the first year they played AND marched. The uniform change accentuated the horn line and drum line's new found movement vocabulary. I aged out that year and was sitting about 10 rows back from where this camera is. My favorite DCI show ever! I remember this like it was yesterday!

      doug avila Yeah, I remember seeing BD in NJ early on and it was like "Oh. Well, BD's back. See you next year." And like the other commenter said, the visual program was WAY ahead of the previous few years. What I really remember was ScoJo's first line being absolutely ferocious. Good times.

    • @meandmyEV

      I marched Cadets in 94. BD was unbelievable. They came east early in the season. I saw their victory arc in late June and knew it was a race to second for the rest of us. This is still one of my all time favorite shows. I wish they hadn't done it in a year I marched! Haha
      There was a rules change after the 93 season that weighed the visual scores more heavily. BD opposed it but it forced them to concentrate on visual. Great season for DCI.

    • @bluehiway04
      @bluehiway04 8 років тому

      It was one of the most memorable Summer's of my young adult life. I enjoyed every single day of being on the road and cooking for those starving kids who spent the day out in sometimes 100 degree weather rehearsing ALL DAY LONG. And, as a musician....I was amazed at the level of talent I saw with every single corps. I'd love to do it again. Fantastic you got to march BD!!!!

    • @themindofmoore
      @themindofmoore 8 років тому

      +christopher gray one of my life goals is to to be a cook for the summer (I seriously mean that too). I need to get my kids out of the house first hahahahaha. I seriously think it's one of the most rewarding positions in a drum Corp line up. I marched Spartans of Washington in 90-91, then Marauders '92. After achieving my dream of marching BD '93 I actually came back to do another summer with Marauders in '94 but decided around April that I would stay at BD. Clearly one of the best decisions I've ever made but I will be eternally grateful for the opportunity that Jim and Randy Barrell gave me. I was the tall black soprano player.

    • @bluehiway04
      @bluehiway04 8 років тому

      I hope you get the opportunity to be a DC cook! It was so much fun. My favorite was at the very end of a day of rehearsal, those kids were grateful for ANYTHING you had ready for them to scarf down. At performances, often times I had to remain with the cook trailer but, I had brought my bass, a small amp and had wired the trailer with a CD player and a badass speaker system. Often times, if I had to sit with the trailer, I would park myself on the steps and play along with whoever was performing at the time. I got plenty of applause from corps kids that were walking past our trailer. Plus, spending $5,000 in one shot at Costco was a blast. I contacted Jim several years ago about cooking for BD and I don't remember what popped up in my schedule that I had to cancel but like I said....I'd jump at the opportunity to do it again in a heartbeat. I think I still have some tour t-shirts and my Marauders wind breaker. And, being a career cook....those kids weren't just eating mac and cheese and PB and J's....we had some gourmet dinners at rest stops. Complete with 70dB or so of music coming from the trailer.

      The Intentionality Coach If your name happens to be Nate, your performance in the Finals that year along with the rest of your BD comrades introduced me to a whole new dimension of sound, and literally was and is a hallmark in my musical journey. I remember watching the DCI finals "94" video cassette religiously and meticulously analyzing the beautiful dissonance and dramatic contrast with the battery. Simply The Best! I also had the pleasure of attending High school at West Covina CA in 95-97. My First and most trusted friend for freshsman (which I was @the time) happened to be, if I'm not mistaken one of the youngest to march BD@ the time. Ron Friedline. He spoke very Highly of you and most of the Band Idolized BD. Our Field show that year was basically a high school trib to My Spanish Heart, thanks to Tom Plunkett, who happened to be our brass instructor(his brother brad I think marched as well) spoke often of Dave Glide And Wayne. really helped our sound and our character, Instilling in us principles gleaned from the literally the best Corp in the world. I really wish there was a way to reinvigorate The American public for complex, natural, challenging yet satisfying music. I liken what the Devils did to a John Williams meets Stravinsky, then they head to Chick's house for dinner. Thank you brother for killing it. Your skills resonate here in the future and the past. Also RIP to the young man who passed in the snare line. motorcycle accident if I'm correct, He was part of something great!!!

    This show was amazing and the drill that went with it was amazing also!!! For them not to win a championship with this show that just shows you the level of competition DCI had in the early and mid 90's!! If the would have played this show a few years later they would have won another championship hands down!!
