This line is legendary. I used to have a bootleg (audio) tape of their parking lot show and warmups when I was in high school (94-98) and practiced along with their warmups till that thing was about wore out. Taught myself snare and tenors listening to these guys. Ended up marching and eventually being hired as a tech and writing the drum feature for my high school, mostly because of this line and this show. Great memories man. Thanks for this.
Fantastic drumline. THE reason why Cavies won that year. At least to me they were. Fantastic writing all around but the feature stands out. Nine men playing the Claw . . . cleanly. I like that vertical stick strokes at 6:19. Another thing I loved about not just this line but all the Cavie lines of this era were the visuals. Really interesting stuff. Best dutting ever.
Dude, we stole so many visuals, warmups, and stuff like the claw and vert strokes from this line when I was in school. We idolized these guys. Awesome stuff.
I know it goes without saying but i love how cavs have kept that machine/robotic movement so constant throughout the years. As time has passed ive become more of a bluecoats fan but cavs will always be my first love. And it all began with this show. 😎
Such an iconic line and show. It’s crazy that anybody can even hate on this let alone give it a thumbs down. I’ve read every hater comment on here picturing the Nellie Olsen stink face. Lol
i was so glad a third snare drummer threw his sticks at the end. that scene was pretty funny. this victory run looks and sounds cleaner than their championship show to me, anyone else agree?
I agree. We were having fun and had a great victory run. The finals run felt timid to me. I guess we were just playing it safe but overall pretty good. Our best uniformed run of the entire week was Semis though. That performance was so sweet.
lol the guy saying it was dirty didnt even watch to the end of the video. the backsticking literally doesnt sound like backsticking on the field. unbelievable, what an achievement all around.
I marched next to Todd for 3 summers and was such a treat. He was the only new guy in the snare line in '94 but he fit in immediately like a vet. He was always prepared, incredible line player, and always had a good attitude. To the point that we'd look to him as a source of positivity when the dog days of summer were bogging us down.
@@SgtHulka95 Mason is a cool guy. He was my professor when I was in the quadline at Morehead State in 2001 and 2002. One of the friendliest people I've ever met.
Wow, this can't be finals night. There's a lot of dirt in this. At the end of the first two exercises, you hear all kinds of rim and stick clicks from the tenors.
As a member of this snare line I'll have to respectfully disagree. Being there and living it is different than judging based on a 19 year old VHS tape videoed from an angle. Even at that, it still sounds clean so not quite sure what you're talking about.
Well, you have the right ...but I am a Floater...my instructor was Tom Float. Plus there are Soo many other snare lines like 1987, 1989 Cadets that raised the bar Soo high on a clean snare line !
Every video of every drumline I've ever seen that was recorded at an angle/from the side, has sounded "dirtier" as opposed to frontal recordings. You can look up any lines and notice this. As an MSU drumline alumnus, not all of us were so much Cavies fans, as MSU tends to favor Cadets as their preferred drumline. That said, the Cavies did visit our rehearsal lot for a few days in 1999, and it was undeniable how clean they were. Some of you can claim to be an expert by a VHS tape from the side, as Scott was saying, but actually marching in a full size line is another story.
brian, you have no clue what you're talking about.... this line was PISS CLEAN in June.... the angle and recording device have a lot to do with it.... this is why you will never be a trusted source on this topic... BECAUSE YOU'RE TOO FUCKING STUPID TO KNOW THIS

That's awesome! I was a little later to the game...had the PBS tapes from 2000 and that got me hooked on DCI for life 🤣 no regerts

Up there with Star 93, SCV 04. One the most musical percussion books in DCI. Love the show.
Yo my drumline teacher was head snare this year on Cavaliers, good stuff.
Thank you for having this up. Such an amazingly sick show.

Scott McCoy My band director marched baritone for cavies in 95
Scott McCoy Did you know a Scotty burns that marched baritone?
Thanks for the upload
Evan FMM 94-95

Oh man! I knew about the claw, but I had no clue about the rest of the backstitching around 5:52
Quality sounds, yessir.
Awesome!
My high school drumline stole so many of the licks from this show especially in the feature.
Hey just wondering what was it like marching with Todd Sommer, he's my percussion instructor now and I'm super curious.

Brian Mason?
Yep, Brian Mason wrote the percussion book.

roll thang?
When did James Campbell leave cavs?
'93 was his last year as percussion arranger then moved to a program coordinator role 94-96.
The 6s on the spock in the warmup early on have me wanting wanting vomit. At least their book was clean.
Late to the game, but pretty sad watching nobodies crap on one of the all-time great DCI shows. Please do show us your body of work.
Playing with some SACK

Ummm, yep. It is. Spoiler Alert: Nobody's perfect. Not even on finals night.
possibly musical BUT pretty dirty! they have that "consistent half dirt" going on. tenors are cleaner but the snares are "half dirty" consistently.

Brian got his first name wrong. It's actually Richard.

EXCELLENT college drumline! Very clean, however too easy of a book.
