For those wondering: Yes, this was an official competition with all the necessary requirements for a world record. This was the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona, Oklahoma.
Here are the live results from the competition - results.blacksquirreltiming.com/meets/34082/live/field/4-1
has the iaaf approved the record?
also: im amazed you didnt mention how jürgen schults wr came actually to be into place. doping was done systematic in the former gdr ( i was born in gdr) with or without the knowledge of the athletes. in fact, it could happen that if you refused to take the enhancers you would be dropped out of the athletic club you were participating and training in.
of course, other countries did the same, especially ussr, usa and west germany - due to obvious political reasons.
a lot of wrs of these times have to be taken with a grain of salt. ( 400m women wr for example)
alekna is whether a disturbance in the force or a cheater as well. i go for the latter, bad life experiences, you know.
@@Pintkonan there working on approving the record, world athletics is celebrating it,so clearly it's in the process
@@mantasvilunas2636 there is not even a video of the whole throw lol hahaha so you can just go out on a field and throw in a tornado and make a record and its legit?
@@Trancenation5 gave you the video
Bruh, I'm 55 years old. This record was set the day after I graduated from high school 😲🤯 Talk about untouchable!! Ridiculous!
I wouldn’t get to excited about this long standing world record. There was no drug testing back then. Iam not saying he was, but every indication points to that.
Steroids are a helluva drug! 😂
@@DA-bp8lf Yep. The good 'ol 80's. Several untouchable records.
@@anthonypayne2526 Yep. It was the 80’s 🤷🏽♂️
lol 55 year old saying Bruh hahaha….sad.😂🤣😂
What’s also crazy was just the whole series. Every single throw was over 70m, with half of them over 72m. He seemed frustrated at his first throw over 72m, even though it was a big PB. I think all of that indicates he still has so much more in the tank and he could end up rewriting the record books in a similar manner as the likes of Crouser, Duplantis, or Rojas.
Yep discus has its Crouser, Duplantis, Rojas, Zelezny. Still, I'll be intrigued to see how Ceh responds, and with 3 throwers able to sail past 70m it's hard to predict who will win Olympic gold. Just look at what Stahl did at the 2023 Worlds - that was incredible!
@@TheOriginalGankstar Stahl was the clutchest athlete of the 2023 World championships for sure that 6th ran throw was insane
@@TheOriginalGankstarYeah, even with Alekna in his current form, Ceh and Stahl can win at worlds. Just like how a few years ago Johannes Vetter was throwing phenomenally in the javelin but couldn’t win at the Olympics. Alekna can’t afford to get complacent no matter how good he gets.
I would have liked to see Stahl and Ceh throw in those same conditions for that competition. I have a feeling one or both would have surpassed Alekna’s mark.
@@TheOriginalGankstar shut the hell up, those guys aren't in discus
Finally the son surpasses his father and even Jürgen Schult :)

The fact we have a WR holder not sponsored is a sad day for Track and Field there’s really not enough money in the events
Supply and demand. It is what it is
@@emilstorgaard9642 I agree with this we as T&F fans I’m sure we can do better and bring more awareness to this great sport, athletes I guess have to make themselves more marketable and get their face in the public sphere a bit more too not as many household names right now
He's redshirting at Cal this year. Hence the un-attached
@@BeauThrows Oh that makes sense, now I’m not sure if he needs to go back to the NCAA but at the same time the benefits from that system for these athletes is often more than going pro which for the top athletes that’s an issue
@@BeauThrows same happens in swimming .....often . Redshirting is common during Olympic year preparations .
As a 17 year old freshman at Cal in 1967/68, I set the freshman record in the discus or 176'. 55 years later, I saw a video of this 19 year old Lithuanian freshman, Mikolas Alekna at Cal surpass my throw..........by over 50+ feet!!!! I was absolutely awestruck at how smooth, fast and explosive Alekna was through the circle. When I read that he was the son of the Olympic discus champion, Virgilijus Alekna I knew this kid was something special. Indeed young Mykolas Alekna is, having just broken a 38 year old world record set by Jurgen Schult. I look forward to watching Mykolas compete against the likes of Stahl, Ceh and others over the next decade or so. Glad to see the international discus competition is in good hands.
Watching him spin in place gracefully after he lets go of the discuss has got to be one of the most satisfying things in sports
I too was impressed with this young man’s graceful spinning in place. Such balance. Some lesson in leaps and spins in the ballet studio could be incredibly helpful for him to break the world record.
Yah it looks awesome
Do you also watch figure skating?
The average UA-camr films between 1080p and 4K.
Bro got a new world record which was filmed on a potato 🇺🇸
I think we can safely say that any world records set in ANY event by East Germany are, at the very least, dubious. All you have to know is how ridiculously muscled their female swimmers were.
Considering his father is renown as well it makes sense
You certainly would think so, however, he does not demonstrate typical steroid use looking at his face and physique; not even a drug like Anavar.
Since 1980 due to work in sports nutrition, I've been around steroid use alot in track and field, professional American football and bodybuilding. He probably was using something(s), but it's not visually obvious.
Though if you watch videos of 400m runner Marita Koch, she is slightly-built (at least in the upper body) in comparison to today's 400m stars
Were they feemales?
Great to see a world record from this era broken and hope more of them will be exceeded but unfortunately some of the other world records from this period will not be broken any time soon.
It's mostly just the women's records from this era. Men's shot put and discus have current record holders, and 5 of the top 10 in javelin are from the last decade. On the track there aren't any cold-war era records anymore for the men. The women's events are a different story, since women benefit more from doping and the soviet-era doping programs resulted in absurdly unattainable marks in the women's strength-dependant events. For the sake of women's athletics I really wish World Athletics would revisit the validity of specifically the women's events prior to either: 1989 when random testing was introduced, 1992 (technically 1991, effectively 92) when the soviet union dissolved, or 2005 when blood and urine samples began being held for later testing.
@@Elliottklassen Indeed. The GDR and USSR women were always more dominant in their events than the men and its easy to understand why.
For a person who keeps commenting on track and field matters. Incredible that you didn't mention the effect of (strong) quartering winds. A look at some of the relevant tapes, shows a very strong wind coming from the right of the right handed thrower. The effect of quartering winds in adding quite a few meters to distances, was highlighted in 1968, when Oerter decimated Silvester in the Olympic Final; Silvester's earlier WR (with quartering winds) was then unattainable. I recall reports of John Powell throwing in Antelope Valley in the 1970s, under similar conditions. In Alekna's defense (if he needs it) is that Schulz's WR was set under such "favorable" conditions. Before we all go nuts about a GOAT in the discus, let us not forget Al Oerter.
Four successive gold medals in the Olympics (56-68), each time beating out throwers who were (heavily) favored over him.
He speaks more on track than field. Knows next to nothing about field events.
It was extremly favorable condition, i hear alot of ppl travled to oklahoma to set good lenght in discus. We will never see this kind of discus throw in a stadium. Swedish ex-discus trainer made a good point about this in an interview.
@@hemmy8645 lol all i heard from the swedish coach was whine whine whine,he didn't allow stahl to go to meets like this so stahl doesn't have the record, too bad,so sad,i don't see why anyone else should care
Looking at the results, it seems like ‘favorable conditions’ are only for Mykolas, lol.
@@PHUNKlt No, a lot of other athletes also recorded PBs at this event.

This guy just broke one of the tuffest WR’s in a random ass meeting
Random ass MTG is correct. Didn't look like a proper MTG. Can't deny he threw the distance but was it just a discus competition that ran in groups of 6 throws like a
training session until everyone was relaxed enough to throw pbs. The UK was notorious for it in the 70's with the UK record broken numerous times during what was basically a glorified training session.
Guy at 2'nd felt he couldn't do much not only was he up against a WR, he also had a handfull trows above 70 m soo the best guy woon this day!
This was a bronze level meet for WA this was not a random ass meet... there was prize money... 3 rounds then final. It was treated as a pro meet. It took over 66 meters to make the final.
They used to have a few 'field event only' meets in my college days. I remember seeing John Powell break the discus record back in 1970s (1978 IIRC?) at Cal State Long Beach (California) in one. They had nice facilities at the time, separate discus, hammer, shot put areas, the HJ, LJ, TJ, javelin areas on the nearby end of the track.
@@crosslink1493 CURRENT 74.35M AS Lithuanian ALEKNA IN Oklahoma (Ramona)
I was there right behind the net. You can hear my hooray at 2:12. It was hard to see exactly where it landed and he didn't react at all to his throw. The measuring guy had to step back a foot or two to catch where it landed. Once they announced how far it went, the small crowd erupted in applause and excitement
Well, that throw is obviously very good, but so is the wind.
dont get me wrong, this is a very impressive throw and set of throws, but the conditions in which they were throwing were unreal. he was practically throwing in a wind tunnel
Every throw that has gone over 73 in history has been done in conditions as such
He has thrown 74 in practice more than once.
@@MrTruckerf i have not heard of this,do you have a source
Alekna was the only one to throw over 70
@@fetchwes If everyone else at the meet other than Alekna was only throwing their usual distances, then you'd have a point.
His father, double Olympic and world champion Virgilijus Alekna threw 73.88 officially and reportedly threw 76+ metres multiple times in training. Gerd Kanter also threw over 73 metres. The elder Alekna also never looked for particularly windy and thus record inducing conditions for his throws. Kanter and young Alekna threw their best results in massively windy conditions on stadiums built near sea and at meets designed for that purpose.
As for the current situation, it cannot be any crazier. There are multiple contenders to break the new record again. The Slovene Kristjan Čeh is only getting warmed up, for instance.
"seemingly out of the blue" is a big stretch, the whole throwing community has known about this guy for a while, and almost everyone thought he'd be the one to break the record... and they were right.
Always a good day to see a 1980s WR go down
Does that mean the athletes today aren’t using PEDs of course not however there’s no way they can be using it to the levels of the 1980s when they had *zero* out of competition testing in the 80s
better training will be a much higher factor since you can take all the roids as you can but if you aint training properly/ most efficiently then its not as effective
@@username.exenotfound2943 I agree for sure, Training and nutrition is so important for performance then PEDs help on top, the gains you can make from the first two is often understated
@username.exenotfound2943 also greatest wind conditions of all-time occurred that particular day around Oklahoma farming area, if events are discus or javelin wind factor is great thought also his father threw 73,88m in great conditions therefore he's man to watch.

The world record was insane, but IMO the 6 throws over 70 tells much, much more of the potential of the 21 year old KID.
He's going to be one of the most dominating figures in athletics in the coming years. HIs technique is without peer, like DuPlantis in Pole Vault.
I did NOT expect that WOW

So what? Every throw 72m+ was with strong wind in history.
The guy has strength and speed and balance and smoothness, all to excess. This is THE technique for youngsters and established throwers alike to copy.
Also, good Idea to have a father who is arguably the greatest of all time and a mother who is a long jumper. He is a combination of early coaching, perfect genetics and appears to have a good head on his shoulders.
THANK YOU TRP
I would not say the record was totally unexpected given Alekna's performance in Berkeley one week earlier and Perez setting a tremendous PB one day earlier at Ramona.
That his own father owns the Olympic record is mind blowing. I cannot wait to watch that at the Olympics this summer!
His father Virgilijus Alekna holds two Olympic gold and one bronze medals.
In 1997 he was better than Jurgen Schult in World Championship (Virgilijus was 2'nd ,Jurgen 3'd)
3:25 - "The discus is almost impossible to see during its full flight (as it leaves and re-enters the atmosphere)". . Incredible throw, definitely want to see more of him in action.
So awesome to see this! Also to see it happen at a small meet and some pretty harsh wind. So now the question is, who breaks the hammer world record? Because that's now the oldest record in men's track.
i'd love to know the wind components of both throws tbh
More throwing coverage please!
All good. Let's enjoy this moment!
great but what about the wind we see back on the net?
Incredible achievement 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Amazing. But interesting question. It was clearly super windy. Whilst there's no wind limitations in the event, does a headwind help give lift and distance? For all my time in the sport i was never a discus thrower so would be interested to know if there is any impact from wind speed and direction that you get from being on an open field like this compared to a stadium with much less wind.🤔
yes there is a huge benefit to throwing in the wind. There's a reason why everyone threw PB's in this meet, including the WR.
@@tommyt6604 Thanks I thought that might have been relevant.

Literally he followed his dad’s footsteps to archive this. His dad must be so proud of him so as our country 🤍

Most big discus throws are done in open fields like this with favourable winds. It's unlikely we'll get that distance in the Olympic stadium to have fantastic angles and shots of such a throw. Still, we can hope. I think 3 throwers might all beat the current Olympic record in Paris.
News outlets have the CNN story showing him in wind-up for a throw in a stadium LOL. I wonder if they even watched the actual WR throw since no link was given.
The beginning of a discus dynasty. I think the unique combination of youth and pedigree, topped by familial mentorship will see the record put away for eons!!! There is a lot to anticipate here and certainly a lot to discuss!!!
funny enough a discus shotputters peak is often in their late 30s powell s best throw was over the age of 40 Al Oerter was late in life at his pb too
Great that publicity is given to this performance, lease note that the wind conditions were optimal in Ramona. Six of the first eight set personal bests
Thank you for doing the extra effort with getting the pronunciation of athletes' names right. I doubt most non-German speakers would get the "umlauted" u in "Jürgen" right.
His Father IS NOT his Coach. He has a US and a Lithuania Coach (his Father stays away from it by maintaining a respectful distance and probably an 'eye' on things).
But his father is best adviser ,any coach can not match.
Was that video of the actual throw? Cause that wind is crazy! Look at his shirt and the net. ???
not nearly as crazy as how the record he broke was achieved
Looked like an all-comers meet. Thought for a minute it might have been at one of those legendary wind storms in Salinas, CA.
world continental bronze meet with prize money
Great form, long levers, very fast in the circle, equals great results.
Imagine getting that underwhelming of a reaction after breaking a 30 year world record
There were only 30 or so people there and he reacted more to some of his other throws than this one. You missed the actual reaction when we all found out how far it went
It will be interesting to see when and where the 74 m will be broken in a stadium, with an auidience and visible to all of us through a real camera. I also cannot stop thinking why no wind is concidered not suitable for WR as in sprintrunning and longjumping? It surley seems to affect results markedly.
Looks like a windy day, I'm sure it assisted the throw
That's mental!
That's the most scuffed, DIY world record cottage I've ever seen. Some respect for the throwers is due.
It is weird to see a WR broken on something that looks like a local school field by an athlete wearing a regular black t-shirt.
probably had an +11m/s wind. still an impressive series, though.

Somehow it only affected him. He may be the chosen one by the God of wind.
there are no wind restrictions in discus
Many in the discus community had a feeling this was coming, especially after Perez threw 73m in the womens discus the day before. The conditions at Ramona were perfect for discus with strong head winds adding to the distances if the athlete was skilled enough to flight the throws correctly. Alekna will throw further in the future.
yes thats very true, thats why i think he wont throw anywhere near this distance in a stadium. throwing in a stadium always sees lower distances.
@@joowsty 71.39m in a stadium with reportedly zero wind just the week before is not that far away. He certainly could throw 72/73m in a stadium in a few month time.

I´m a big sportsfan and I respect great performances. Unfortunately the wind plays an important role when throwing a discuss.
Normally discuss competitions are taking place in a stadium, that prevents the wind from blowing strongly. In this case, they were throwing on a plane field with very strong winds. I think that this was a huge advantage und explains the series of very long throws.
We will see what Alekna can do in a stadium at the olympics... But nevertheless big respect.

Ohh, this really counts as an WR? Wouldn't wind be much better in an open field like this compared inside a stadium?

Steroid and winds always been there with rings pointing in favorable directions. Steroids showed up in USSR in 50s going to prolific use in 70s -90s everywhere.
Some throwers ,as in all sports, possess an abilty, some beautiful mix of the bodies vistibular system, and channeling a better than most explosiveness.
A big part of it is being 'gifted'
Is that the worst filmed record ever?
How can you say that this is the greatest WR of the year - it's only the beginning of May!
Talk about proud parents!!
You're leaving out a big factor. He is a great thrower and you could foresee this happening but the discus is an aerodynamic event. The top throws always come with good headwinds or right quartering wind. This wouldnt have happened in dead air. It would still have been a great throw but 10 to 15 feet less. This is why olympic discus gold medals are nowhere near world records because it's thrown inside a stadium. You'll see this at the Paris Olympics. The winning mark will not be above 230 probably. He is still the world's best thrower today but wind is a factor. Of course all the other throwers that day had that wind too.
