Without James Caan in the role, we wouldn’t have Sonny throwing an FBI photographer’s camera on the ground, the “BADA-BING” gibbering, or the character’s beat up of Carlo quite the same way.

I've always said the people in casting pretty much know what they are doing. I've seen it many times before. The guys trying for the part see themselves one way , and the pros see them as the audience is gonna see them. Did you know that Caan wanted the part of Micheal in the first one? Never saw where he read for the part, but I read that a long time ago when they were talking about the making of the movie. As I said, the guys in casting are there for a reason. Occasionally an actor with enough pull can demand that a certain person be in a film with them in a certain part. I have read of that before. But probably only because they can see themselves that it would be successful, and casting, and directors, or powers that be agrees that it will work well.
