Hey Kent, i’ve been turning on and off for about eight years, but had never turned a bowl between two centers as you demonstrate. I’ve tried it twice now and it’s a revelation. Beautiful! I am just about to get a lathe for the first time, probably just a small mini-lathe to start. Watching your videos for all your techniques and advice is great! I love live edge bowls. I have a friend who is a woodturner (from whom I've bought many bowls/items) and I'm fascinated to watch you and have you teach me how he does it. I have zero interest in turning wood myself, but love to learn how things happen/are done.

Actually, the frame drop/pause allows a good look at the orientation and engagement of the gouge to the wood. Maybe this is not a 'defect' in the presentation.

Thanks for another lesson on turning, always enjoy your presentation - the bowl came out beautiful.
I've been doing this method of hollowing bowl insides and it works pretty well so far. I also realized that I do everything with 5/8 gouge, even little biddy cups and bowls.
I have done live edge bowls in the past Kent, however I did not get them as well balanced as you did. Now with this new knowledge, I think that I can do better with my next one.

That's absolutely amazing.
Beautiful job. I've watched this video several times thru my process of turning a few live edge bowls and pick up on "new" things each time to improve my technique. Can you elaborate on what you did for the final finish...I assume you let it dry for a time and the resanded, then put on some type of protective finish?
I have a big cherry tree l cut back in the fall. But it's not black cherry. It's red in color. I usually use mallet an gouges to make my bowls an cups. But lm going to use a new lathe l purchased recently. That wood is beautiful your making a bowl out of. You do very fine work l may destroy most of that tree before l get a bowl lol!

Lovely vid thanks. What a tasty wood cherry is. I have just pollarded one just outside my workshop so might attempt a live edge bowl.
Usually I find cherry really difficult to dry without splitting. Do you sometimes put oil on for a twice turned bowl after the first turning? I put end grain seal but haven't tried oiling the whole thing. Veering off the subject I know but cherry is so special.
I've not seen any videos specifically discussing how to minimize the expansion and contraction of turned wood. I know some disgruntled person will say"This bowl only lasted eight years and now it's cracked," which is absurd but ...
I figure asymmetric wings might be aesthetically pleasing, as long as the asymmetry is obvious, so it doesn't make people question their eyes, but also still isn't so far out that people wonder whether it could actually stand as intended without hiding a weight in the foot. So, a direct line from the top of the lower wing to the top of the higher wing should probably be a slope that has an angle between 15 and 30 degrees. Less than 15 degrees, and it won't be obvious enough at first glance (or later glances from the corner of an eye), and just annoy people. More than 30-ish degrees, and people will think it will roll over, or assume that the fruit or whatever is placed in the bowl will roll out.

Yes, you are thinking about this correctly. The design should have enough intent to be understood as intentional and not appear as a mistake or oversight. ;)

Kent, I really like how well you balanced that bowl. Those edges are so thin and delicate. How long will it take that bowl to dry now that it is turned? Will you show it in a later video so we can see how much it may have moved?
I have been turning some cedar. It has some center rot and got rained on last weekend. I may try to turn another section in a week or so - as you know, it is raining again today. Would love to get together with you and get some one-on-one time turning so I can improve my turning - especially since I am just up the road from you.

Thanks for such a great instructional video. How long does it take to dry once you have put the temporary coat of linseed oil on the greenwood bowl?
Kent, love your videos. I'm learning so much. I made a bowl exactly like this. I waited to add a because it was just too wet to sand, and it cracked. Question, after the linseed oil, did you sand any further after it dried? Also, did you add any additional finish over top. Thanks!

As usual Kent, a terrific demonstration and a beautiful bowl! My preference seems to be a slightly thicker wall than that, but I realize cracking becomes more of an issue. What finish will you apply over the “tried and true”? A good friend lives in Florida and we missed a chance to visit them when the wood turning symposium was on…..maybe next one! I would love to hi. I will apply multiple coats of T&T Danish Oil until it stops curing and dulling. Usually about 3-4 coats.

Beautiful work! You mentioned the moss/lichen on the bark; do you normally leave that in the final product or do you try to remove it?

I would love to see an update after it dries. How long will something like that take to dry? I just acquired a bunch of fresh logs of various species and I’m dying to get some finished bowls out of them but the dry time is intimidating.

Nice looking bowl, Kent. I've done a couple of live edge Black Cherry bowls, as well as several other species. I usually turn mine a bit thicker and sand to 320, then pack them in a container of fresh shavings. Then I weigh them weekly until they stop losing weight, then sand again and apply the finish. Do you get any deformity using your method? I usually have to flatten the bottom a bit after my bowl has been in a box or bag of shavings for several months. Tony

My biggest issue was not getting hit by the wings.
where was the symposium in fl, i missed it :(
The first live edge bowl I tried to make I made 2 mistakes. The first one is that I had dry wood, the second is the wood was hickory - very hard. The second bowl is cherry, but the walls are thicker than I wanted. the interrupted cut was really beating me up. I only have six chisels and only one bowl gouge. It is a Hurricane 1/2" M2, but the shaft is closer to 7/16". Need to get a heavier bowl gouge. Thanks for the tips on how to turn a live edge bowl.
