I don't know if I have a favorite dead thrall, but I did do something interesting once that kind of broke the game. I used a calm spell on a bandit and killed him, then raised him as a thrall. I visited Whiterun a bit later and a courier approached with a letter of inheritance... from the dead bandit. I thought, "That's pretty cool", chuckled, pocketed the gold and went on my way. Sometime later that thrall died and I raised him again and later I visited Windhelm. Another courier, another letter of inheritance. Apparently I glitched it where it recognized the bandit thrall as my friend and every time he died, I got a letter with gold.
i had something just like this happen when i was playing with the joke Jesus mod. i killed him multiple times and he has the ability to auto resurrect after 10 seconds or so lol. then i got the courier and he gave me over 50 letters with the same information lol.

My favorite is definitely Malkoran. Not only is it fun to watch him fight his own shade, but every time he dies another shade is created. Which means as long as you have muffle and invisibility you got an army of wraiths clearing out camps. I know what your thinking though, all those shades will be hostile though, well with enough investment in illusion or restoration they are non threat as you can turn or calm them.
I just finished a Necromancer playthrough and he really did come in to use. If he gets killed,he leaves a shade and you can just reanimate him again and rinse and repeat.
I revived the emperor after assasinating him in the final dark brotherhood quest. he won’t use any weapons outside of his fist so gave him a full set of daedric armor enchanted with unarmed damage. Now i have a dead emperor just beating the shit out of everyone. 10/10 experience.
You could also give him those gloves which enhance unarmed. You get them from that guy, some thug, down in The Ratway in Riften. It'd make your emperymore powerful again possibly
Better dead thralls has the option to mute that line and the annoying groans of the undead, it kinda fix a lot more problems with dead thralls, really useful, they stop disappearing and you can put a mark on the corpse's, I really recommend it

@@kobayashi69 mine is unmodded warcraft-inspired. Phase one is a good-alligned paladin: I start as a full dwarven armor (except helmet) + warhammer + Restoration. After I get Enchanting and Smithing to 100 I switch to phase 2, Death Knight: becoming a vampire (necromage perk), adding up Conjuration for Dead Thrall + frost cloak + Ebony Armor/Boots / Dragonplate Helmet / Wolf Gauntlets (Companions) + enchanted Stahlrim greatsword (Frostmourne) + the Ritual Stone. Actually I played the Evil Phase as 2 and 3 , as I considered each phase based on the skills I was leveling at the moment and matching the roleplaying to it.
Boy... now I gotta do an Arthas paladin build and have him fall late game. ..There is just the thing with him not really being a conjurer while he is still good, but I'll manage.
I just counted Malkoran’s shade as another follower since if I was at a far enough distance (which my builds tend to be) the shade would just start attacking nearby enemies until it died again. Which I also considered to be a bonus since he would drop 250 gold every time he was defeated.
My personal favorite Dead Thrall is Thomas. He's certainly far from the best, but there's something enjoyable about giving him a second chance at killing trolls.
The first thing I think when I want to revive a corpse is "damn, I wish those blue ash piles would despawn on their own." Luckily, Dead Thrall (the most powerful necromancy spell) doesn't have that problem. It's late game fix, but I'm still grateful. Honestly, I don't know why I've never revived Ulfric. I always save the Civil War for last, so I could use Dead Thrall by then, And having a famous and powerful War Lord like him by my side striking horror into the hearts of my enemies would feel amazing. Just imagine the looks on a bunch of Stormcloak holdouts when the man they revered and know to be dead comes strolling up to them and murderizing them. That sounds amazing and I'm gonna do that from now on, regardless of this video's outcome. The best undead slave is a dead undead vampire... Confusing.
Ebony warrior: "Finally I am going to Sauvegarde sent to by a worthy warrior!" ME playing a necromancer, looking for a good thrall: "You'll have to cancel those plans I'm afraid..."
@@neilchristiancalajate5615 That *IS* the point! He's the Optional Superboss of the base game. And by "base game", I mean before they removed the level cap. Seriously, try fighting him at level 80 without anything from Dawnguard, Dragonborn, or the Anniversary Edition. Oh, and no RestoLoop. He will kick your cod piece in.
Kornalus from Harmugstahl. It's especially hilarious when he shouts his battle cry of "What? No! Get back in your cage!" My current character is walking around accompanied by Third Emissary Rulindil from the Thalmor Embassy. I robbed the place of absolutely everything, which was beyond my character's carrying capacity - but then I recruited some help for that. The spell should have been named Zombie Porter. Just the other day while I was working the forge, Rulindil croaked out the words "Release me..." half commanding, half pleading. Oh no. Not yet. You are still paying for your crimes.
i know this is over a year late but whatever i might as well inform you guys of these 2 also potential followers. At lvl 41 kill Arch-Curate Vyrthur and dead thrall him he will be at lvl 49 so you need to be a vampire with necromage in order to do so. He is in my eyes the strongest goddamn thrall in the game and i believe that is because i put him against every enemy i can think of and he won the 1v1 including the ebony goddamn warrior, while he is 32 levels below him! He gets augumented frost and shock x2 which makes his spells do more damage than the volkihar vampires and will always at the start of combat summon a frost atronach and cast a unique version of flesh spell that gives him 300 more armor rating on top of his 117 on his base armor so if you improve his armor he will hit the physical damage mitigation cap. He has a unique more powerful version of vampiric drain that also slows and steals stamina which makes him kit all melee fighters endlessly which is how he beat the ebony warrior 23 times out of 40 tries. This is now the best part, will use Auriel's shield when given to him (cut content by bethesda) including the burst on the bash attack. The other thrall is ingjard and she should be gotten at exactly at your level 50 when she is the most powerful since she levels exactly as the player she will be level 50 too, now the unique thing about her she spawns with an enchanced crossbow at that level that has 50% armor penetration and she has 100 levels in archery, heavy armor, one handed and block which is why she is a really strong archer/warrior thrall. You need to be sided with the vampires and you can kill her during the quest destroying the dawnguard. Their wiki pages: en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Arch-Curate_Vyrthur en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Ingjard
I also have him and I'd say he's the strongest in-game as well, I gave mine Harkon's sword which he can use because he's a vampire, it isn't the best option but I like it, never tried giving him Auriel's shield though. With Ingjard, does she use normal bows that she's given, because if so I'd like to give her Auriel's bow with some sunhallowed arrows, that'd be a fun combination for an ultimate vampire necromancer build, though I'd probably damage Vyrthur.
@@mfs-3kiryu592 - the racist-ass Shitcloaks are no better. Not to mention, they're helping the Thalmor by stunting the Empire's growth after the Great War. Tullius himself says that the Empire is planning to fight the Aldmeri Dominion once more after they've fully recovered. So when you think about it, if the Empire & Stormcloaks just teamed the fuck up, and form a potential alliance with Hammerfell, we would kick some Thalmor ass. There's also all the other provinces that could help, like Black Marsh.
The bandit chief really is an artist. Effective, numerous, and aggressive as hell, painting pretty pictures all over the snowy fields and stone walls of Skyrim.👌
"What do you think of as you slay your enemies?" ...I must be the only pacifist wishing those bandits didn't rush me, or hoping those mammoths don't feel threatened and I need to protect myself agains their giant buddy.
Out of all the videos I'd love to see a remake of, it'd be this one. Years after this video came out, I keep coming back and watching knowing this has led to some of the coolest moments I've had while playing using Necromancy. While I cannot speak to the potential of creation club content's effects on the Dead Thrall and what becomes available after the level 50 limit, I do know that there are some techniques not mentioned in this video that I'd absolutely adore seeing another take on. It would be cool seeing mods like Floating Damage, a tracker of health/magika/stamina for test duels, an arena that allows ranged thralls to have a chance to fight at different ranges/levels while not being stuck in close ranged with melees (while still letting the pure melee fighters run up and duke it out), and a showcase of the data to the points being made here. One of the biggest is how you can give Dead Thralls some of the many Conjuration staves so that warriors can use a staff without ruining their aggressive AI, and give them something more consistent then something like the Volkihar Vampire's use of Revenant which is quite situational (as is their drain). I pick Frost Atronach because of their ability to harm enemy stamina and stagger lock with their ground smash which is fantastic for your sword n' board thralls while Storm Atronachs are the better, they don't do their explosive nearly enough or even melee enough. Like Orchendor, they're great for dragons though. It must be said that Orchendor losing out here might be due to the fact that he is an amazing Sanguine Rose staff wielder alongside the high damage Miraak's Staff as a Thrall with stall. While normally I agree having a melee thrall is ideal, having Orchendor be the Rose/Miraak staff user is utterly fantastic because the Dremora Valkynaz used makes up for the lack of damage due it leveling to 48 as apposed to the twenties of the Marauders. Those scripted benefits with the staff's stun give him a whole new level due to the monstrous stagger lock of the staff, and no other follower uses it better. Another commenter pointed this out years ago, and it has been stated elsewhere, but can actually use Malkoran to get free money. In the video it's called a hassle, but the funniest part about this dead thrall is that you can use them to fight their own shade and their shade gives money, so you essentially get *paid* to use Malkroran and his shade which still attacks enemies, which can easily translate to thousands of gold per dungeon. There is also a video out there talking about how the Reaver Lord Mages (same as the Marauders types) do very well with flesh spells and healing spells and high level spells, acting much like the Ancient Vampire, but without wasting time and damage with Drain Life opting to instead stay battle ready, though perks are better on the Bandit Marauder. I tend to prefer Reavers because of how they act on the approach to foes, levying spells before being just about as good as the Bandit counterpart, not to mention Close Wounds being used.
I should've also mentioned Ondolemar, being followed by his two Thalmor soldiers upon being resurrected thus giving a bigger entourage. Even being able to Disarm/Pickpocet them eventually and forcing them to pick up better gear, though I only think this is a good idea to do if you want even more of a follower army, as opposed to just Dead Thralls, otherwise, a neat little trick.
I like Malkoran, sure, his shade is hostile, but it is also hostile to everyone. And if the enemies get distracted by it, it gives you time to resurrect Malkoran himself, and thus you can have your Dead Thrall back to fight his own shade.
There was an old build that someone came up with on an old website way back when. Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, basically your ran around with two thralls and a companion each being a particular horseman and what I used then was the Champion of Boethia and Yamarz. Was an awesome build to play when young me first got around to trying Skyrim builds.
Best Thralls: Bandit Chief (mace+shield): he has all mace perks that ignores armor and most other one-handed perks, he also has a special 1.5x damage multiplier perk (you can check on UESP wiki). He tanks and deals heaps of damage, problem is when he decides do block the whole time... Forsworn Ravager (dual wielder): this guy just rushes in combat and spins around killing everything, he also has most one handed perks (even dual wielding ones) and the damage multiplier perk I mentioned above. He deals more damage than the bandit chief, spends no time blocking and will not use a bow unless you give him one (don't do it), but he's is not as tanky and will die quite a lot if overpowered in numbers. This is where you assist him by focusing the same targets he's spinning at. Pyromancers: just pure aggression and they wield the best element in the game (fire). They also cast strong healing spells on themselves. Best mage thralls I've ever had. Vampires: the video says it all, but I still prefer Pyromancers.
One thing to consider for your dead thrall is Cicero as he has a max level of 40 a 100 in one handed and sneak with high light armor and he retains the same AI not to mention being a follower you can give him equipment before you kill him so he will have access to whatever equipment you want and you can get an infinite supply of Cicero's outfit which is the only outfit in the game that has a fortify one handed enchantment on the chest piece meaning it is necessary for getting the strongest attack in the game which is over 510,000 damage and that is without glitches unless you consider necromage vampire to be a glitch
I resurrected volkihar vampire and bandit chief , gave them equipments with full enchantments , then I used duplication glitch to get copies of sanguin's rose and gave one to both of them and my companion uses rose as well. Now we're army lol
Two big thing that this video missed is how to keep your dead thralls from disappearing and which thralls moan like zombies in your ears none stop. I have a house full of corpses. The secret is to put an item marked permanent into the thralls inventory. There are lots of such items but my favorite ones and the easiest ones to get are the ''letters from a friend'' that give you shout locations that arrive by the running courier and the ''bounty'' notes that you get from asking inn keeps for work. This way you can have all the thralls in this video stacked away in one of your houses ready to use without fear that they will de-spawn over time. As for the moaning thralls, vampires are a good bet to be the ones with dialogue and not moan. Also the reaver bosses from Solstheim don't moan, but are worst than the Skyrim bandit bosses. The bandit bosses moan though so pick your poison.
Probably nobody will ever read this, but i've had really good results with morag tong assassins. They make good use of a war axe and heavy shield combo, come with built in fire resist so you only need two enchants to make em all around resistant, they keep their dialog instead of groaning, and they rarely use invisibility to escape combat at low health. Oh, and they literally always use a conjuration staff at the beginning of a fight.
I'd be interested to find out how Minorne from the Dawnguard quest where you find Florentius fairs as a thrall. I've had her as my thrall for ages and she never seems to go down. She spams healing and thunderbolt and is quite aggressive. Also, I've found that instead of Bandit Chief, Reaver Lords are a bit more versatile as they are essentially bandit chiefs who can chuck spells too.
Reaver Lords flee combat, never to be seen again, really annoying when they do that. They come back to you when you finish the dungeon only to run away again after the first sign of damage taken.
I tried one of them. I was at level 100 when I revived him and he still was so low on HP he died from 1 hit every time. Not sure why but I stopped using him after 3 fights.
Just use real names SE if you want basic bandit chiefs to have real names. It's actually an awesome mod that I love check it out. Gives names to guards and it sticks so you can actually come back and talk to the individual guards!
19:20 so basically, 2 bandit cheifs to mow things down, and since there would be two they would survive pretty well cause they kill so fast, and I could bring my favorite pet (being a reikling from dlc) and then my favorite follower (being lydia) and have a 5 man team mowing down dungeons?? or one bandit chief and one acient vampire now that i've listened to that point of the video
I always have that one redgard chick with that unique shield, lol shes just looks cool. Ya know the one at the end of the dwemer ruin where she fights that nord. With yhe spike shield, ya know the one
@@marcusbergman6116 her name is Umana. She has a spiked unique shield, only one of a kind too. Shes a redgard u see for like 10 secs before you HAVE to kill her or the nord.
Not optimal, but I always liked using Falx Carius as a thrall. Champion's Cudgel is awesome for damage, and that heart stone in his chest looks incredible for a thrall. Definitely an undead with some personality
My current Thralls are Ghunzul from Cragged Tusk Keep and Chief Yamarz, Ghunzul is basically a battleaxe wielding Orc bandit chief, and yall know Yamarz, people say Yamarz isn't so strong but mine will enchanted gear and weapons, even without going overboard, on Master, is wrecking whole enemy camps on his own like a one man army, all you have to do is give him Chaos and Absorb Stamina on a Dragonbone Sword and Spellbreaker (and the usual enchantments for their armor) and he'll tear through everybody easily
Orchender is friggin' crazy. I wish there's 2 of them. But yeah, mages that spam spells are really fun to watch. Seeing those AOE fireballs flying crazily makes your eyes twinkling.
Just re-watched thus video again and I've seen some other thralls that are commendable Naris The Wicked is almost identical to Sild the Warlock, they use adept and expert fire spells with adept level flesh spells and healing spells And the two mages I mentioned are commendable with a sheild and sword backup for when they get cornered by melee fighters And with anniversary edition the champion of boeithah will and can act like a bandit chief so it's not a bad option but there is better And yes with the over powered necromage set up you can resurrect a nightlord and nightmaster vampire which if you've all seen are the ancient and volkurhar vampires on a God like level But that's just my opinion and I thought I'd help out with some other thralls for people to try
Malkoran. Not to mention he can be farmed for his Shade, and thusly scads of Septims if you can counter undead effectively, such as the Exorcist Perk(Ordinator)
I use Orchendor and Yamarz together. They compliment each other nicely. Pro Tip for Necromancers: Sort your bodies. Keep dead thralls you like in the basement of the house in Solitude. Keep your vampires, necromancers, and ones you don't care for in the Haunted House in Markarth. Why? Vampires and Necromancers, when kept in storage, can glitch sometimes and auto-rezz themselves. You'll walk in, and they are alive and resurrecting other bodies nearby. Chaos ensues. When it's over, they've turned many of your dead thralls into piles of ash.
My yamarz got launched into space by a giant (postmortem) and then was decapitated by one of the hunters during the hircine quest; then I gave a dremora churl the ebony blade and he disappeared. I was very disappointed when yamarz died because he was an absolute tank
You can't make both zombie. Only one you can make. And honestly both sucks since they not using fullsets armor. Ulfric have unique trait shouts who can disarm enemy weapons, but he very often do this to you and othe followers. Make him not ideal, meanwhile i not see anything good at tulius. But both they partner is good. Rikke using fullsets imperial heavy armor, make she unstoppable from any attack even more good than yamarz. Meanwhile stone fist using full stromcloack heavy armor, give him two handed weapons he can become big damage dealer if you play defensive (like mage or stealth archer).
This video's old, but can't say that I didn't just sit here and admire the amount of detail. It's hard not to appreciate the versatility of Skyrim where not only can you play in so many different ways, but you can play in so many different ways to such minute detail that it just staggers with the amount of options and replayability...that all before even thinking about mods!!!
Falmer warmongers with a mod that allows creatures to be used are the best imo. Amazing archers, cast lightning and ice spells, have really high 1-hand dmg, and heal themselves
My favorite dead thrall is Anger from the mind of a madman, although it requires a long string of exploits to even kill him and get him out of the area but its so worth it he has so much health and is permanently lvl 1
Just popping in here real quick because looking at the thumbnail I suddenly realized something for the first time. If you're a devoted necromancer character, you can just haul a entire enchanted suit of armor with you and put it on a body before raising it. NEVER have I even thought of this.
The Cultis Adept (Dragon Born DLC) was an amazing revive it fought very skilled staying in the back casting shock spells while if getting close switching he also summons Seekers as soon as you meet Miirak and healing with fast healing is enough mine lasted about a month before dying and the throughout I'd check it's health to see it hasn't lost any it was always at half meaning no damage was focused on him. Just letting you know.
This one's timed well for me. I'm 51 levels into a magic-heavy playthrough right now, and my approach to combat is completely different now that I can turn things on each other both before and after they've died. Aetherial Crown + Ritual Stone: also turning out to be a ton of fun. Edit: I've also converted the Heljarchen cellar into a morgue, but my only "collected" thrall there right now (and the first NPC I used Dead Thrall in across all of my playthroughs) is Orchendor. Perhaps I should pick up Sild next, I've never fought him as a Conjuration mage.
Gormlaith is the strongest. She’s like a bandit chief with shouts. You can resurrect her after alduin kills her while reading the scrolls and then polymorph her with the wabbajack
Be careful of having Dead Thralls when having Serana as your follower. When your Dead Thralls die, there's a chance Serana will turn them into Dread Zombies and they're gonna disintegrate permanently.
I've had amazing good fights with volkihar vamps at level 80 when they're luckily capped low enough for me to thrall them. Had a master vampire as successful and it took awhile for them to get stuck ever. They usually died by attacking each other by accident and with serana it was a nuisance to keep them alive. I'd have to smack her down and leave a cell for her to cool down or reanimate. But since I'm at lvl 107 now. I think I can only go as far as an ancient vampire variant. Even with crazy conjuring levels, I was out of luck
So thalmor soldiers are actually really good candidates for dead thrawl going up to level 36 with 565 health, wearing glass or elven armor, and they have access to fast healing and close wounds making them a force to be feared for your enemies.
Wyndelius is my favorite thrall. Aesthetically love that he remains ghostly, and retains all his unique spooky dialogue. He & Orchendor are my go-to dead thralls
Yeah, I loved using Wyndelius. Unfortunately he fell off a bridge in a Dwemer ruin and I couldn't find his corpse to reanimate him. He was both effective and entertaining.
I usually go with Uthgerd the unbroken, and the guy you help get revenge with on that dark elf necromancer in the crypt by Valtheim Towers. However, I also follow the skyrim archives Rise of the Fallen build by putting them into the Blades first, then bringing them out to be murdered by me later on. So they both have Blades armor and weapons and all that.

A good little joke
There's the Traveller who accompanies the vampire attacks at the cities. He conjures Gargoyles which always makes for an impressive battle.
The best is OBVIOUSLY the chicken. Nobody can hit a chicken and get away with it
Unfortunately, the Dead Thrall spell can't be used to raise animals. It only affects people.

Worthy mention: Cicero. He's not great in battle but he doesn't groan all the time, keeps his dialogue and dances around just like he did in life
Actually becomes slightly more powerful according to the wiki
Yeah im shocked he didnt mention Cicero or Vyrthur. They are both awesome. Orchender and ulfric are super fun too, but he did mention those two.

Orchendor is extremely cool to watch with his 2 special abilities
I had him for hours
i know this is over a year late but whatever i might as well inform you guys of these 2 also potential followers.
Their wiki pages:
en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Arch-Curate_Vyrthur
en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Ingjard
I also have him and I'd say he's the strongest in-game as well, I gave mine Harkon's sword which he can use because he's a vampire, it isn't the best option but I like it, never tried giving him Auriel's shield though.
With Ingjard, does she use normal bows that she's given, because if so I'd like to give her Auriel's bow with some sunhallowed arrows, that'd be a fun combination for an ultimate vampire necromancer build, though I'd probably damage Vyrthur.
Video idea based on this: Helpful hints and suggestions for different play styles.

I mean Malkoran might not be practical I suppose but him coming back with a Vengeance every time he dies is hilarious.
Best Thralls:
Bandit Chief (mace+shield): he has all mace perks that ignores armor and most other one-handed perks, he also has a special 1.5x damage multiplier perk (you can check on UESP wiki).
I would start to necromance and all but im too lazy to keep reviving my dead thrall so i guess my dremora lords are smelling weakness again

A CHALLENGER IS NEAR
I've been playing Skyrim for years and this question never crossed my mind. Great vid.
I really like the Daedra mages from when you go inside Azura's Star.
I tried one of them. I was at level 100 when I revived him and he still was so low on HP he died from 1 hit every time. Not sure why but I stopped using him after 3 fights.
You can give misc spellblade bandits Staffs of Fireballs.

The irony of running The Break Of Dawn for the sole purpose of killing Malkoran and turning him into a dead thrall

Just re-watched thus video again and I've seen some other thralls that are commendable
Naris The Wicked is almost identical to Sild the Warlock, they use adept and expert fire spells with adept level flesh spells and healing spells
And the two mages I mentioned are commendable with a sheild and sword backup for when they get cornered by melee fighters
And with anniversary edition the champion of boeithah will and can act like a bandit chief so it's not a bad option but there is better
And yes with the over powered necromage set up you can resurrect a nightlord and nightmaster vampire which if you've all seen are the ancient and volkurhar vampires on a God like level
But that's just my opinion and I thought I'd help out with some other thralls for people to try
I like having Krev the Skinner and Rigel Strong-Arm. 2 named chiefs is pretty awesome.

Malkoran. Not to mention he can be farmed for his Shade, and thusly scads of Septims if you can counter undead effectively, such as the Exorcist Perk(Ordinator)
Finally recently started using Ordinator, and the perk that allows you to change dead thrall's armor and weapons makes this all even better
I like that one snow elf who is a vampire. He spawns in an Ancient frost summon
Glad this research-project was reanimated to be unleashed upon the world.

I’ve always wondered who was best dead thrall. Thanks for the vid.
I hate the way serana conjures everytime😅
I've had amazing good fights with volkihar vamps at level 80 when they're luckily capped low enough for me to thrall them. Had a master vampire as successful and it took awhile for them to get stuck ever. They usually died by attacking each other by accident and with serana it was a nuisance to keep them alive. I'd have to smack her down and leave a cell for her to cool down or reanimate. But since I'm at lvl 107 now. I think I can only go as far as an ancient vampire variant. Even with crazy conjuring levels, I was out of luck
Bandit chiefs are brutal. Two of them killed a legendary dragon and 14 Riften guards. One of them killed me in 3 hits - with 80% damage resistance.
I had a nightlord vampire as a thrall back in the day. She friggen wrecked everything in sight.
Awesome. I was just asking myself this very question and was wondering if anyone had done the "math". Thanks alot guys and keep up the good work :)
