No sooner has the era of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi drawn to an end, with their unprecedented hold on the Ballon d’Or now finally released, than a new duopoly appears to have emerged, set to dominate football for years to come.
But is it the same: Can Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe really be the new Messi and Ronaldo?

#Haaland #Mbappe
I feel like the only way it can go beyond a rivalry propped up by the media is if Mbappe goes to Man United or they both go to real/barca. They need to be part of a larger club rivalry
Yeah or at least be in the same big league. Mbappe is great and all but no one's going to take him seriously if he plays in Ligue 1
Replacing Ronaldo with Mbappe in Manchester United isn't a scenario many would dream of. But it would certainly be exciting to see Mbappe go against Haaland more frequently.
Haaland to Barca would be interesting
Hahaha. You're all see-through
lol what makes you think he will go to MU?
What differentiates Messi and Ronaldo from the rest of the great players is their longevity and consistency. Being the best in the world for over 15 years is commendable. I feel Haaland and Mbappe are great players and currently the best, but for them to reach the levels of Messi and Ronaldo, they need to show this consistency for the next 10 years.

Shut up
I agree that he was one of a kind. And I am starting to come around to the fact that he's slightly (very slightly) better than Ronaldo, but that doesn't mean Haaland can't exceed. All they do in their own ways is great and all, but what matters is scoring and winning. If Haaland can get Man City the treble (or equivalent in EPL) while being top scorer in the world, it's not that vital if he can dribble like Messi can. He has his own talents.

yeah. they were out of this world in their prime
Messi and C.Ronaldo were so insane for such a sustained period of time that you couldn´t measure them by "feel" anymore, and had to bring stats into the room. Before them the "best" players rarely were the "best" stats wise, I feel that´w why we focus so much on forwards nowdays, even over more creative midfield players whose assists make it possible for those forwards to score so many goals in the first place.
Interesting, good point
Even fullbacks nowadays to as well
Kevin Debruyne is a good example of what you're talking about. I'd say almost half the time watching Man C especially early In the season he's was a bigger difference maker than Haaland offensively in that he developed so many chances. Halaand is obviously great at finishing but creating chances is also crucial to the game.

@@peterenis3507 this is not probably prime mbappe what
An additional point is that during the early 10s, Spanish football / la Liga was arguably the strongest league, adding to their rivalry.
I don't know about them being "the new Messi and Ronaldo." I get that they're both elite tier in their positions and easily comparable, but there were several factors that made Messi vs Ronaldo so exciting:
1. Easily #1 reason that made Messi vs Ronaldo exciting was the fact that while they both were extremely productive in terms of goals and direct assists, they also had very different playing styles in order to achieve them. Always interesting to see the results of different styles (Winger/False 9/Central Roaming/playmaking/dribbling vs Winger/Striker/"fox in the box"/tall/extremely athletic). On the other hand, Mbappe and Haaland, while differing somewhat, are at the end of the day both athletic strikers/poaching forwards that drift wide here and there.
2. Messi and Ronaldo played in a club rivalry and not just any, but arguably the most famous club rivalry in FCB vs Real Madrid. PSG vs Man City has never been a historic or even contemporary rivalry. This can, of course, change in the future if Haaland and Mbappe move clubs but for now this is how it stands
3. The overal skill-set of Messi and Ronaldo, so far, haven't been displayed by Haaland and Mbappe. Neither Mbappe nor Haaland have the free kick abilities of Messi/Ronaldo. They also don't have as elite of dribbling ability of Messi/Young Ronaldo (although Mbappe is pretty great on the ball in fast attacking situations to his credit). Neither of them can match Cristiano's overall prime athleticism and neither of them can even touch Messi's playmaking.
4. It doesn't really matter where you stand in Messi vs Ronaldo in terms of who's a better player. There's no denying in terms of pure career achievement, they are both equal. You can easily make the case for either. Comparable # of UCL+league titles, comparable # of national titles, comparable # of individual titles, etc, regardless of who you think was the "better player." We'll have to see if Mbappe vs Haaland will also showcase this back-and-forth winning of collective/individual trophies or if one will win more trophies by a landslide than the other
To me it's art vs power. Elegance vs efficiency. How I see it as an artist Messi achieved more than CR7's power. Messi did it beautifully. People forget that he has the most golden boots. Something you'd assume Ronaldo would have more of given his headlining antics in front of goal.

The Messi/Ronaldo debate has its origins from the Barca/Madrid days. I think having a long term club rivalry with two superstars contributes to that. In a similar sense, Arsenal and United’s rivalry strengthened because of Vieira/Keane.

No one said a duplicate cant surpass the original or be than something original
The Mbappe-Haaland rivalry won't be the same as none of them is a dribbler and once the pace fizzles out then there is nothing to go on. TBH Messi is the one because of whom the rivalry existed in the first place for so long. Ronaldo was the only one who could keep up with him. But you can see that Ronaldo fizzed out once he aged. And.. Messi is still doing wonders at 35.
True he lost his physicality and kinda just dropped
true as a Ronaldo fan I admit Messi is better now since Ronaldo mostly relies on his pace which is the most important thing in his playstyle but with age that goes away. But they are both still the goats

@@sansan445 Yeah I agree, I'm a Ronaldo fan
One thing I find hard to match when it comes to Messi and Ronaldo rivalry is their difference in style. Messi likes to construct to himself and his teammates far away from goal, while Ronaldo prefers to have the ball delivered to him when he's close to the goal; Messi favorite way of scoring is by letting the opposing run to the defense while he comes from behind in direction of goal, Ronaldo's is to be close to it, let the opposition gets close to it the goal and then and distance himself from the goal to score; Messi atracts pressure, while Ronaldo get rid of it....
Mbappe and Haaland won't be as interesting as Ronaldo and Messi because they way of playing have many things alike

Only difference is everyone knew messi was great but no one ever thought Ronaldo will achieve this greatness
Currently? Yes. Ronaldo prime wasn’t just a poacher like now tho
Ronaldo is literally top 4 all time in assists that “poacher” narrative is a myth
Another thing that could contribute to the Messi vs Ronaldo debate us the South America Vs Europe. I believe that plays a significant role in the development of their rivalry, but won' be captured in Haaland and Mbappe one
I don't think that was relevant. The Real Madrid vs Barcelona rivalry, however, was a key factor in my opinion. That also brought us the opportunity to see them play against each other very often, and they were competing for the same competitions every year what contributed to enhance the rivalry between them.
i don't think anyone ever thought of their rivalry as SA vs EU. Even by a little.
Why not ? Almost whole of europe dont like france
As a Brazilian I thought a lot about Messi being from SA and Ronaldo being from Europe, and know Argentinians who do too. Get out of your euro-bubble
Nordic vs Western Europe
I don't think we will have the same level of rivalry we had for Messi and Cr7. I mean think about it, they competed with each other in biggest club rivalry, personal records and trophies, international stage, such rivalry for 10+ years was a treat for all of us
There will never be another Messi/Ronaldo ever. We were incredibly lucky to witness it.
There will be it’s just a matter of when, maybe not in our lifetime but there definitely will be another rivalry
The contrast between Messi's Elegance and Ronaldo's Brute force is something that doesn't exist in the Mbappe Haaland discussion because Mbappe gives off pre 2010 Ronaldo vibes while Haaland gives of Post 2016 Ronaldo vibes. Messi had an under standard season with PSG last year top to bottom! Yes, everyone sung his retirement song last year on all social media platforms, and now he is showing he is not finished yet! Coming back to CR7, if there is one player that can turn this around, that is him! another unique quality of the Messi-Ronaldo era is that their heritages share a romance language and their countries are football obsessed with championship pedigree (Copa America and Euro Cup), just like France. Norway is still climbing towards football excellence. Haaland is amazing and will go down as the greatest Scandinavian footballer EVER.

The thing with CR7 and Messi is they did symbolize a new era for football born at the end of the 2000'. A football with longer careers and more goals and games.
What Messi and CR7 did, some players already did it in my opinion : Ronaldo, Van Basten, Maradonna, Platini, Di Baggio, etc. but they were living during eras were careers were shorter. Almost all of them got injured severly during their golden age.
To give an example, when Zidane played the 2006 world cup at the age of 34 y.o., people were amazed by his level for his age, it was exceptional for the standards of that time but today, half the superstars have their best years around that age (Benzema, Modric, Lewandowski, etc.).
Also, just look at the ranking of strikers. During the 90' and 2000', the best scorers were rarely above 30 goals per year. Today, there are some kids who can reach that mark mid-season.
For example, in 2004/2005, the top scorer was Thierry Henry with 30 goals. When Messi beat the record with 73 goals in 2011/2012, there were 11 others players who reach the 30 goals mark. So except if you think that Soldado, Gomis or Nene are better strikers than Thierry Henry, Shevchenko, Etoo or Ronaldo, the most reasonable conclusion is simply that football changed during that period, with more and more goals each year and, in my opinion, a polarisation of it toward the strikers (In 2011, Messi scored 38,5% of Barca's goals while in 2005, Henry only scored 25% of Arsenal's goals).
Still Messi and Ronaldo were good at more than just scoring goals, you can't compare the passing, dribbling and free kicks from Messi and Ronaldo to that of Haaland and Mbappe. It's just another level
I just wanna say Messi is by far the most talented player ever. Goals, assists, free-kicks, dribbling and passing are all comparable to the greats in each department. CR7 is a game decider. Crazy.

Messi was pure art the way he dribbled making defenders to do the split, Ronaldo quick feet works and thunderous strikes those were things that brought excitement and made the comparison even more fierce like you could show clips of them to someone who knew nothing about football and they would immediately follow any of the two even without them wanting anything to do with football. Tell me, can someone be persuaded to watch football when you show them Halaand or Mbappe's clips? They are not amazing and they are not just extraordinary like LM10 and CR7.
true, messi and ronaldo had huge factors in making them so popular. it is without a doubt that messi is a better footballer, but ronaldo was the showy flashy player right from his bolton debut. messi is football personified, he is so complete. people wouldve known from day one that he would become the greatest if not for injuries and poor mentality. in the case of ronaldo, he was raw initially but he had that flair. he developed his own unique style of running and revolutionised the role of a winger in english football. his fancy flicks, special knuckleball free kick technique, that free kick stance and so on had a huge effect on the young english audience. he had a swagger about him which appealed him to the fans. then he went on to join madrid and so both of them found each other on the opposite fence of the most intense club rivalry. everything went right in this rivalry. both were remarkably different yet being hardworking talented and extremely focused. one was quite and non-reactive while the other was loud pompous. having one person being arrogant and cocky really helps grow a rivalry. i dont see that with haaland and mbappe, and they need to be in the same league for a rivalry to truly develop
this sums up perfectly why it can't be repeated again, two different players, different styles, different traits, same achievements and awards, it just defines the game of football

These two are the best current generation of football has to offer, sure and have the potential to break scoring records of all time, but that is where the comparison ends. If you play football, you understand, these two dont even come close what Messi is. The close-control dribbling, the passing/playmaking, the footie IQ and most important of all humility. Messi's play is simply beautiful, it's art.
On the other hand Ronaldo is a product of hardwork, so if these two put the same amount of effort, they could be like him lol
I hope we get to see a brilliant rivalry in years to come.
But whatever happens, this was special.
1. Longevity: Staying injury free and in top class shape for close to 15 years is extremely difficult and requires monumental amount of will power and work ethic.
2. Scoring nearly 50 goals season after season is very difficult and does not happen often in an entire generation. Although the goal rate of both Haaland and Mbappe is mesmerising, but to stay in that form for 15 years will be insanely challenging.
Staying injury free is 90% luck
It’ll be the next football rivalry but no there will never be another Messi, he’s alone at the top
I hope that they are not the same. I want different players to do things that I haven't seen. I don't want to watch the same rivalry again. I don't want a sequel, I want a different rivalry franchise that is unique and excites me with new tricks and goals

U can always find strong and fast players who can score alot of goals. But u can't find a man who can everything. Messi can control the game. He can assist. He can score. His intelligence is unmatched . His technical ability is second to none. He can do things no other player has ever done. Things that u can't copy that's how good Messi actually is .
There will never be another rivalry like this one. Blessed to have lived to see it from beginning to now the end.
The funny thing is that both Mbappé and Haaland are both Ronaldo fans and although they have different atributes, both are more a like with Cristiano Ronaldo than Messi.
Haaland is a Zlatan fan
@Ajay his a more Zlatan
I dont believe so because messi now even when hes old is doing more magic than mbappe is doing in the world cup… Imagine if they were the same age right now, wouldnt even be close
Maybe Next Ronaldo,But bruh, they aren’t even as good as a single nail of Messi’s left foot .Messi keeps both of them in his pocket. I see great potential upcoming talents but not enough to be as good as Messi 🐐
Good video. I’m kind of hoping those two won’t have a Messi vs Ronaldo rivalry because it was largely exhausting off the pitch with all the media stuff. Just want to see these two guys be brilliant with minimum fuss.
Messi represented Barca while Ronaldo represented Madrid, it was much more then just the crazy numbers they put up,the media of arguably the 2 biggest clubs itw was clashing each week on who did it better making the rivalry even more intense with the whole world divided to come and watch the One and Only El Classico,
That’s right who remembers when u waited the whole year for El Classico, it was like War ❤ and it held so much significance to the game
Really truly grateful we got to see football history be made in the era of Messi and Ronaldo, we may not see it ever again, the media desperately trying to shift things to Erling and Kylian is just a manifestation of their unwillingness to accept the end of a once in a lifetime moment in the history of the great game.
Messi and Ronaldo being elite at the same time is a once in a lifetime occurrence.
That's why many of us soaked it up as much as we could, because it's not forever.
Mbappe-Haaland isn't at all a direct rivalry like Messi-Ronaldo because they're not competing in the same league. Messi and Ronaldo are on the Mount Rushmore of football with Pele and Maradona. To have two greats in the same era is like Federer-Nadal in tennis. It's extremely rare and should be appreciated.
Leave old times to old times we watched the 1st and 2nd (arguably) greatest players battle each other for so long I don’t think it’ll duplicated in the same way for decades.
I'm a Messi fan but I will cry when both him and Ronaldo retire! What a glorious time it was!!!
They both have playing style like Ronaldo, not messi.
Maybe the new Ronaldo but Messi is someone that we are once in a lifetime
The thing about halland and mbappe is that its their numbers that surprise us and not the way they play, none of them comes close to messi playmaking, shooting, dribling etc etc. Their strikers in teams worth billions that play for them.
Ronaldo and Messi are a class of their own they have shattered records not only that but their consistently gave Max output every season for over 10 years, these two young lads cannot fit I the same shoes as Ronaldo and Messi
New Ronaldo maybe as they're great at goal scoring, there's no replacement for Messi yet however.
What differentiates Messi from the other 3 is that he's also a 10 while being a goalscorer while the other 3 are pure forwards.
Btw, Messi and Ronaldo were in the El Classico. Haaland and Mbappe would be in the Al Classico or Oil Derby, whichever you wanna call it.
El Cashico
I don't think so. As soon as I saw Messi and Ronaldo at 18 y/o, they already seemed like they were different galaxies. These two kiddos are good goalscorers
But of course, the media will hype them up because they need to keep those views and sales up
Messi and Ronaldo were both complete in all possible ways and not just on one aspect
No because Mbappe plays like Cristiano and Haaland plays like Zlatan, there is no new Messi yet
It's no coincidence the top 3 European goalscorers of all time are all currently still playing. 30 years from now there'll be a good handful of players with over 100 CL goals. Yes, Messi and Ronaldo are greats, but this is also down to changes in the modern game and the prestige of the competition. Haaland and Mbappe are well on course to 125+ goals even if they retire at 31.
There won't be a guy like Messi for decades. Or maybe there will never be one. That's the difference with CR7. Ronaldo is about scoring, Messi is about scoring+team play+MAGIC. Guess who is easier to emulate
What if Haaland and Mbappe don't want to be the next Messi or Ronaldo and just want to be themselves? Let players establish their own legacy.
Too late for that, the best they can do is ride on the shoulders of giants.
i agree
Hopefully they can surpass them. Every football fans want to see continous improvement in the game of football

Precedence (although with its own context) is an inspiration for comparison but unprecedence inspires appreciation or admiration.
I urge football enthusiasts to just enjoy whatever the game offers, era upon era.
More realistically it would be Endrick vs Lamine Yamal or Musiala vs Lamine Yamal.
Putting playstyles and context aside, I think it's fair to say both Messi and Ronaldo were consummate professionals that had a massive winning drive and a mature stance towards their profession. Mbappe on the other hand seems to be more of a primadonna social media influencer, which will probably be the main obstacle to a similar rivalry occurring, as he won't be supported as a person by anyone aside from teenagers who think bad manners are cool.
You have to be the best creator and goal scorer in the world at the same time for over a decade to be in the same breath as Messi. In other words, it’s not happening.
Mbappe and Haaland are both copy or Ronaldo.
The new Messi hasn't come yet, to be considered the new Messi has to be insane field awareness + massive talent with their dribble skills and crossing through 4 man traffic as if it's nothing + willingness to pass instead of making a stupid attempt to score leading into a blocked shot.
Guess that they need to go to Barca and Madrid, or Haaland stay at City with Mbappe in United. It is really the rivalry between the players due to their clubs rivalry that put so much focus on them.
Yeah as many of you said, they might reach the numbers but consistency and mentality will be the real challange
This rare context was also present on the commercial pitch were they both represented companies that like to place themselves as great competitors in this market. Plus they strangely sponsored the other's club... This is nowhere near as important as the existing rivalry between both clubs and (the cultural rivalries that are at it's core). But it really did participate in this "rare context" that will probably not happen soon...
PSG only willing to let Mbappe go for Liverpool ( only if they could afford him ), So Man City vs Liverpool will be the arena for them to battle it out. OR both of them go to La Liga forming the new El Clasico rivalry
Messia and CR7 are unique, we'll never see something like this for a century
These 3 players are not in Messi's class, so you can only compare the 3 players as to who's better between them.
Messi is born better, he's wired differently, he's a problem-solver and solve problems before anyone can even spot it.
Messi is simply put....DIFFERENT.
I think Haaland will create record for generation to come. I think only person who can break his record will be himself. 🔥🔥🔥
He won't beat Messi's 91 goals in a calendar year
@@joeb7640 if anyone can break that record it's arguably him. Looking at the pace at which he score goals it's looking like he is going to break all sorts of goal scoring records. But scoring goals alone isn't everything. That doesn't make you a complete footballer like Pele, Maradona, Messi or R9.
@@unnirajac8617 The year over and he didn't beat it. But Messi was a goal scoring machine for 12 straight months to set that record. Haaland would need to be at top form consistently for 12 months to beat it.
What were you saying about Messi's era in the Ballon D'or being over? Bout to win an 8th 😂😂😂
why do they compare Messi to people who just score goals? No other player has the ability to play in the midfield, organize, create, make clinical passes, dribble in tight spaces (Mbappe does)...
Here some people are claiming that maybe we can witness someone like Ronaldo but we can't witness someone like Messi. So let me clear earlier when Maradona and Pele used to play the same thinking was there as well but what happened Messi and Ronaldo came. It's not like that we can't witness someone like Messi yes Messi is a goat 🐐 but we shouldn't forget that if someone with more talent and determination can be there and even Messi can't suppress Cristiano completely. Accept it....that both are irreplaceable not because Messi has natural abilities and Ronaldo didn't but because of their consistency.
I feel blessed to have been able to live out this rivalry. The fact that 2 once in a generation players were in the same league playing for clubs with a bitter hatred for eachother is literally the stuff of movies..
You fail to mention that Mbappe has already won the world cup. He could do it again just now
Even if mbappe wins 2 WC he won’t match Lionel Messi WC is a team effort. Individually Messi is at a far greater level than the rest. Mbappe could be the next Ronaldo but I still have yet to see anyone replicate Messi.
Yeah by that logic the benched players that won 3 world cups alongside Pele is better than cr7 or Messi
He also failed to mention that Messi has 8 Ballon D'ors now, not 7 :D
Haaland is probably the closest to those 2 in my opinion especially if he can keep his goal rate at this current level. Mbappe seems to be losing his way a bit after PSG lost the plot and gave him a ridiculous contract and his relationships seem to be soured.
Haaland has not even won a domestic golden boot in a top league yet. He has played 10 good games for City, but Mbappe has won the WC as a key player for France and has been a center piece for one of the best sides in european club football for almost half a decade at this point. The competition is starting, but Mbappe has been clear until now.

Tbh we can't really give LM10 & CR7 enough credit bc what their constancy beats everything we have ever seen in this competitive sport at the world stage. They kept themselves out of major injuries alone is an achievement in itself.
The golden era of football, I'm glad our generation got to witness it. This WC is gonna be the best treat, hoping everything favours these two legends..
Do a video on Mbappe being the biggest diva in football right now, and how his toxicity affects PSG.
Why so much hate?
They could come close but I feel this generation of young Brazilian players can disrupt their Balon d'or run(s). mbappe will do great both Club and international Haaland will be more a club player seeing that outside odeegard he has no help for Norway and UEFA is to competitive .
The real rivalry will be:
Vincius vs Lamine Yamal
- Real Madrid vs Barcelona
-Vinicius is a little older, just like ronaldo was older than Messi
-Both are essential to their teams (Lamine Yamal in 1/2 years)
-Both have won LaLiga with their clubs, and meet at least 2 times in a season
-They already have a strong rivalry (El Classico)
-They both play on the wing, just like Messi and Ronaldo
-Vinicius has been called the next Ronaldo and has gotten nr. 7 / Lamine Yamal has also been called the next Messi, and has the same physical traits
Conclusion: The next Ronaldo and Messi are most likely Vinicius Jr. and Lamine Yamal. But Messi and Ronaldo will never be replaced or forgotten
I think endrick felipe vs lamine yamal will be rivalry
I don't think it will be easy to match the two GOATs of the sport, even though I think that Cristiano Ronaldo is the absolute best player of all time, Messi is a beast as well, can't see Haaland or Mbappe replicating the rivalry.
Messi has 7 and Christiano has 5 Ballon d'Ors. I don't believe Haaland and Mbappe are going to share 12 Ballon d'Ors between them. These two can at best match Messi-Ronaldo rivalry for at best a couple of seasons. I don't think the kind of rivalry witnessed during the 2010s will ever be recreated in world football.
I think the rivalry between messi and ronaldo elelvated when they played for barca and real madrid respectively.
I don't think we will see such sinilary rivalry between those two until and unless mbappe joins man united, or both join some other rival clubs
That’s what I was thinking. If Mbappe wants to prove himself worth, then there will be no perfect stage like United. That puts him in direct rivalry with Haaland, and now we can see who scores more goals
Purely attacking players will always get plaudits for this kind of thing but I truly think that Jude Bellingham could be one of the greatest all-round players of all time. He's got the talent and the personality for it.
I hope Bellingham can keep his ego in check. While he was again running the show for Dortmund last night, he was being dismissive of his teammates on a couple of occasions and trying to do EVERYTHING and be everywhere. He does need to remember to trust and delegate jobs and encourage his teammates, not shake his head or make throwaway gestures when they're not able to keep his level.
