Got to work with The Carpenters for a week. They were both so nice. Karen was a sweetie. And she had such a beautiful voice. I was dating a female drummer at the time. Karen let her sit on her drums and showed her some new tricks. That is the kind of wonderful spirit Karen had.

One thing i`ve always believed over the years and agree with you on, is that Karen was such a grounded, decent human being and is one of the things i`ve always loved about these guys, that`s why i can`t understand why Burris treated her the way he did, but i guess like the saying goes, `we never realise what we have, till we don`t have it anymore`! All she ever wanted was love, a house and kids and to bake apple pies on a weekend, how can you not love that about her :)

I was born and raised in Downey. The Carpenters house was about 10 minutes away and every Christmas the fam would drive by their house because they always had the best Christmas lights. I was only 6 when I first heard them because my parents loved their music. Every time I hear them it brings back a ton of childhood memories for me and I've loved them ever since. She truly did have a one in a million voice and I'll never get tired of hearing it. RIP Karen

I just read an article where Richard said that when Karen was in the hospital the last time before she died, they went to put a feeding tube in her and either the nurse or doctor accidentally punctured her lung and then 3 months later Karen died. Karen is how i learned about anorexia because i had it myself and my mom said one time "i dont want you to end up like Karen Carpenter so please let's get you help." I had no clue who she was but looked into her and her story and it scared me because i didnt want to die and didnt think i would until i learned from Karen that it's more than a possibility. She was such a beautiful woman inside and out with the voice of an angel and though her time was cut short, she left a big impact on the world and im forever grateful. I wish i couldve known her and tried to help her. RIP Karen

I was born in 1950. It was not common in my experience for family members, including parents to say, "I love you." We simply expected that our actions showed we cared, just as portrayed by Mrs. Carpenter in the movie. Sometime in late 60's or maybe 70's it became fashionable to hug & to say "I love you" to people, including family members. Most of us were awkward with this new style of expression because we simply had no reference for it. The story I heard is that it was Richard who finally in frustration told Karen that he loved her when pleading with her to get help. He was glad he did so because 3 weeks later she died. That story rang true to me, because close as they were as brother & sister, I bet they had never said it.

I’m born 2003 and I never heard the “I love you” in my teen years and nothing much has changed in my family generationally. My dad was born March 1967 and my mum February 1970 and they both never got told “I love you” by their parents. My mum’s mother left her and her brothers with their drunken abusive dad (he only abused my mum’s mother) my mum was around 5-6 years old when she left and never once got told “I love you” and she got put in a kids home with 2 of her brothers. I think my dad got told “I love you” by his mum but never his dad and they had a okay but not perfect dad and son bond as his dad was a old school dad born in the early 1940’s but they still spoke to each other. Both of my dad’s grandfathers ended up ending their lives so addiction, physical illnesses and mental health runs a lot through both sides of my family. I think it’s just a generational thing sometimes it’s hard to say “I love you” but it doesn’t cost much to utter those words.

I wonder if that was different in Germany vs America because my dad being born in 53 always said we have to say it before we get off the phone or get out of the car when he’d drop us off or when we leave the house because you never know what will happen, it could be the last thing we ever say to each other. He also lost his mother at 22 so that could be why also? My grandmother was from Germany so I wonder if she made that a point or if it was because she died.

On my way to grandmas house all thru the 70's, I would do a drive by the carpenters home, their brown van was always parked on the side of their home, one year they had frosty the snowman rising from the ground. I would always say hello, as I drove by, if I remember right, Richard waved to me one time. I never knew a brother and sister who got along as they did. In those days singing was actually real singing of every word. There was no slow talking in music. Songs had emotion and feeling, your heart could open up when listening to the Carpenters. I thought it was a wonderful movie. A great tribute to Karen Carpenter, the lovely and very pretty Karen, with the most beautiful singing voice ever! Of course it was such a tragedy, if only Karen could have realized how beautiful she was outside and inside! Cynthia Gibb did a wonderful acting job playing her! There was only one Karen Carpenter, who while alive lived life bravely and to the fullest. I believe, a beautiful angel herself, she is singing with the angels in heaven. I miss her! ❤❤❤

Their mom made me so sad though be 1 she couldn’t say I love you and 2 her reaction when she found out Karen was the one who was signed. How do you favor one child over another I just don’t get it 💔💔

seems to me the mother always favored Richard over Karen, not sure if it was because the female was expected to be behind the man back then, but Richard was never the singer, he was the talent that wrote not just the words but the music itself, Karen brought it to life with her voice. Her mother could never just be proud of her, I really feel that was one of her reasons for being suseptible to an eating disorder to begin with.

All I know is that she was unique, she had a hard time with herself
that never was resolved….Richard worked hard to help her, while her Mother was a negative force. As an adult woman, Karen tried marriage, battled everyone’s opinion and it always felt like she never was allowed to be herself without backlash. In the latter stages of the condition that ravaged her externally and internally. Mother Carpenter was insane for starting her teenage son on Quaaludes….Richard though stronger and overcoming his own issues, tried to appeal to his sister, but somehow she was past recovery…I always wanted to tell Richard that…not trying to surface heartache, just an opinion from a woman growing up in the Carpenters rise to fame…

These are my favorite kinds of movies. Not because Karen passed away, but because she lived. I'm glad God gave her and Richard such a beautiful gift that they got to share with us all. I love movies that are true stories about entertainers. For an example movies about Elvis, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, The Judds , George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and Hank Williams Jr. , Jerry Lee Lewis , The Beach Boys, and serval others I know I'm forgetting at this moment. I'm sure there's more movies I've never even seen before, but would love to find more of them.

I have two brothers and I know how it feels to be not the favourite. Everything I say is met with criticism and contempt but if my brothers say the same thing, it's a good idea. I was ugly if I dressed like this but trying hard if I dressed like that. They see me as a possession, as an object, without feelings that they can be rude to.
Edit: As I continue watching it becomes more and more realistic. People around make decisions FOR me without stopping to think that I should be the one to make that decision. It's part of why your self-esteem is so low, people don't see you as a capable adult, their equal, who's opinion matters. They tell you what you can or cannot do like how Richard forbids her to go solo or mess with their sound.
