This is the 3rd time watching your Big Burma Build, finally getting around to building my own jungle terrain. Thank you so much for these amazing videos :D
Looking at Drowned Earth scenery and the BBB is perfect for ally jungle needs.
Nice start! My house is in a tropical jungle and the advice I'd like to give to you is that bamboo is really tightly stuck together and is basically unpassable or very (very) difficult terrain. Old dead bamboo falls and dries out making barricades that take thought to get around. Also, bamboo groves are usually 100% bamboo and the bamboo plant basically nukes all other plant life. Ferns or other plants, like vines, might be on the outside. As for other jungle plants, like ferns and pig weed, is pretty open but can get huge! We had a fern outside the house the size of a small car and it was one plant.
I'm looking forward to your results.
+Jay-mu-zu von Cippangu oh, thanks for the info mate, it's going to be really useful!
Hi Mel, thanks for having done this great and helpful playlist on your BBB.
Looking good Mel! My great grandfather was a Chindit. Never met the bloke sadly, as cancer claimed him a few months before I was born. Your tutorials are amongst my most highly recommended on the internet, this is no exception. This project hits home on a personal level. Would love to see an up to date video on the force :) Keep up the stonking work mate :)
your definitely the King of the jungle Mel, well done! :)
+David Martin I wish! ;-)
We are moving within the year and I can’t wait to have the room to build stuff like this:)
I really like you vids. I'm just getting back into 40k after many yearsand your channel is really helpfull to novices in terrain building. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
+greg wallbridge Glad you're finding them useful mate
Great to see the tutorials back.
+Stay Dread It's good to get the flow going again :-)
Looking forward to starting my own table using this playlist... Now to shrink it down to 10mm scale
This is shaping up to be an awesome build! Looking forward to the next part
+bibbly1234 Fingers crossed it'll be out soon!
Good to know im not the only one who hobbies in the middle of the night.
Off to a great start!
More! More! I just recently discovered your channel and I'm loving it. I'm getting ready to create some serious jungle and beach terrain for my pirate and Conan games so I feel like this is going to be handy :)
+bigbossignition Hopefully next update coming soon matey
lovely terrain, out standing. And your tutorials are really really helpfull
+De Gevleugelde Ridder Thanks matey, glad you liked it
Love how your figure bases match the gaming table PERFECTLY. The MG crew at the very end look almost like they're sitting there un-based. I dyed my basing flock to match the felt cloth I use too. But I used green food coloring. Won't do that again...I had the stuff all over everything. "Why are your fingers covered in green blotches Bill?" :-P
+Bill D. in Iowa The devil is in the detail mate ;-) I tried food colouring while playing with clump foliage, never again!
Good thinking on the screws for painting bases, Mel. Never thought of that... you always have creative ideas.
Gotta find the easy fix bud
Loving this series!
nice job. can't wait to see part two.
+mark taylor Won't be long mate ;-)
Also starting a Pacific War table. Thanks.
Very very cool mate!
+Brad Davidson Thanks mate
Excellent work as always Mel. Can't wait for the next video. I was surprised how effective those mixed herbs were, time to raid the cupboards again...LOL
+jjab99 Cheers bud, it's an old trick but a good one ;-)
30:19 Well thank God for that!!! We might never have gotten to see this video!
Great Job mate, very realistic!
+Crafters Central Cheers mate
Very nice Mel
+frenzykitty Thanks matey
Awesome job. I remember when you only had like 300+ followers. Keep up the good work!!
+MiniGamePainter it's crazy to think that that was only a year or so ago mate
Excellent work!
+John Kelley Cheers mate
Great video!
+MrAndy2406 Cheers!
Great vid. Thanks.
Pretty awesome job!
+Von Erker Cheers bud :-)
Eres Genial ,me encantan tus trabajos minis,,
More jungle video's!
Great video mate, very informative and I just have to build some terrain now! :)
Cheers
Al
+Al Wood Cheers mate, crack on!
Came in partway through the video and thought you were ladling out chocolate pudding!
Great video! The clap at the beginning as you walked off reminded me of Basil Fawlty! lol
+T's Creative Ramblings I like that idea, all I need now is a gnome ;-)
:-)
Do you know Bob Ross? I couldnt other than mention, that your way of explaining terrain building reminds me very much how he did it for paintings. I like that very much.
+Presbiter You're not the first to mention that ;-)
Maybe a little idea, using some gloss medium and the herbs. So the look they are wet from rain and so
+Benoit Vanderzippe oh I'll be handling mud in a separate video mate ;-)
I like to use tea grounds as a basing material. A box of 100 bags goes for a dollar and change at most grocery stores.
Your bases look like doughnuts. They make me think of custard filled eclairs. I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.
+Ronald Brow (HestonFan) That'll work well mate, and now i'm hungry but I've actually got eclairs in the fridge!
+TheTerrainTutor What are the odds I would have intimate knowledge of the contents of your refrigerator?
Your expanded polyztyrene looks like crushed oreos!
Really nice, part 2 soon? :D
Love the videos Mel.
new sub here
+Maximus Lowthian Welocme aboard matey :-)
Ps. I can't wait for part 2 👍
+greg wallbridge shouldn't be long mate
Hi Mel, currently I'm building a model coal mine for my railway layout. Coal mines are never flat; they undulate and water collects in pockets from subsidence. While coal mines and jungles are eons apart you've given me several ideas as to how i can achieve the effect i want. Thanks.
I have a short 2" x 4", about a foot long, into which I have drilled a bunch of holes about three quarters of the way through. I keep a bunch of large nails sitting in these holes. When priming and painting minis, I glue a mini to one of the nail heads and keep it there until I finish painting it. Looks like you do something similar, only with foam.
+rustedbeetle Now that's what you call mass production lol
Hey Mel, can you describe what’s in the herb mix? Or link a vid where you put it together?
Your the best, cant wait for you Kickstarter book!
Just standard mixed herbs from the cookery isle of the supermarket, I just buy it in 1kg bags from amazon
Just thinking, how about some longish and sorta narrow tall hills? A few of them scattered closely together would make gullies. Fighting among gullies can get real interesting! The sides are hard to climb but not so high that you cant chuck a grenade over to the other side.
+Bill D. in Iowa Once these are complete, that's the effect they'll have bud :-)
Finally getting around to watch this. I really like the effect. I'll be using this for my 28mm Marines and Japanese I think. I'm curious how you think the ground scatter would scale for 20mm? I have 20mm Vietnam figures that I want to give this a try with but I think some of the bigger chunks would be out of scale. Maybe put the mix in a blender?
+SmittyM14 Blend it buddy and it'll be fine :-)
I came back into my room after making a cup of tea (21 mins in) only to see you pouring a big tin of Marijuana all over the place!!
+captainkavi That would be some expensive ground scatter! ;-D
Lol
Not here in Olympia WA. Could honestly be cheaper than flicking at this point,
awesome work. every once and awhile, do a bad build, make us mortals feel better. Hahaha again cool work.
+Clayton McClain I can't promise a bad build but I can promise a screw up in every vid! ;-)
grate vid
+james and his stuff Thanks mate
Hi Mel. Could you use a brown spray paint to base coat instead of the emulsion paint?
Mel, you got some more mojo since the Total War board? cos that's some funky background music ;-)
+Timothy Humble I'm rocking it mate ;-)
Is there an alternative to using mixed herbs? Perhaps dried leaves or decorative moss that's been chucked into a food processor?
I would like to see you play a game on your board some day .
Me too!
Quick question: so I really like the fallen leaves idea with herbs and using on the bases of my new board as well. However, while I’m using on the base part of my log bunkers, feel that flock akin to your log bunker video is more appropriate for rest of dirt that is surrounding/ on top of the bunker. Thoughts?
If you were going to do a non-monsoon look, would you wash the herbs a different color? Maybe a lighter brown, or possibly a darker green??
I'm go with a lighter brown base but I'd use more ground foliage mate
what did happen to the part 2?? been waiting and waiting!!
+dennis nilsson Just finishing it up now mate
Why do you seal/base coat underneath bases? Do you expect boards to warp if left unsealed? Do you do this with all your projects? Thanks
open mdf absorbs are moisture and expands over time causing warping
I'm wanting to do a table model in 1:35 scale with jungle, troops, and armor. How do I do the scaling so everything is in scale with everything?
I was wondering i you have a video of you workshop. The corner of the kitchen.
+Ron Obringer I should do that at some point :-)
Mel, I recently ran across one if your videos, and now have watched several. I am not in to gaming, but tried my hand at a small fairy garden. I want to try doing a woodland village next and believe several of your techniques will work well for me. I used sawdust colored with watered down acrylic paint as my grass. Have you tried sawdust? If so, pros and cons? Also, I am curious, is this just a hobby for you or a business. Thanks
+Bigmaude31 Sawdust is ok but it's no professional flock, it depends on how realistic you want your diorama to be. It's a hobby that I'd love to turn into a proper business, the channel that is, no the terrain making.
the one part PVA glue ten parts paints remains me of chocolate pudding
+Thunder Conway mmmm ..
Question: Could you have mixed the brown paint with the PVA you used to seal the herbs to sort of be able to skip one step?
+Leif “Laffe” Eriksson If I could get the brown through my airbrush, yes but as I said in the vid, I struggle with browns for some reason.
+TheTerrainTutor Thanks. Didn't catch that, sorry.
Leif Eriksson
no worries bud
Hi Mel, I've a question: why do you paint the underside of your terrain pieces? I haven't and am curious what it does. Cheers! GZ
+GrumpyZhukov I've heard that it can help prevent warping of the MDF. Might be why Mel does. Knowing him, he'll be along in a sec with the proper answer ha. :)
+GrumpyZhukov +Mark Rowlands - Exactly as Mark says, anti warp plus it stops the piece picking up moisture from surfaces and the atmosphere. Essentially, it ensures the piece is completely sealed mate
Where do you get your herbs from? I'm imagining they're cooking spices, which (in that quantity), would cost me a fortune.
+Timothy Anderson Dirty cheap big bulk bags from the chinese market mate
There it is! Thanks, I'll have to check it out next time I make Indian food. You've tried used coffee grounds and tea leaves, haven't you?
Timothy Anderson
no mate but ground coffee isn't a thing in the UK and I don't drink tea ;-)
Are you going to be doing an Xmas set? Jingle terrain?
+Graeme Collin With bells? ;-)
cant what telll part 11 look like fun vew my lows and macks 4ok terrain did dirt then grass the same whay still looking good ;;;;;]]]]
+redgreen09 it'll be epic mate ;-)
"888 Jungle Floor", thats a fancy way of saying random herb XD
+Calvin Zero i think its BBB for Big Berma Build
+Calvin Zero BBB - Big Burma Build ;-)
+Matthew Benney Spot on ;-)
Is your water cup an Iron Maiden cup? Lol. Can't see it, but the colors are similar.
Tank museum mate
So when can we expect part II?
+David Star As soon as i've finished cutting all these plastic plants mate
27:50 -- andrew and epstein
"and y'all know how much fun it is when they are wetter" - Mel 2k16
True ...
What do you mean by "filler" instead of modelling puddy?
Joint compound? Spackle?
Hi Mel, what kind of herbs did you mix ? I am kind of unfamilar to this :) Thanks.
It was a mixed suma from amazon mate
@@TheTerrainTutor ok thanks
mel, what do you do about dust?
+james and his stuff What dust?
from bevaling edges and stuff
james and his stuff
I do it outside mate
11:15
has part 2 been done yet?
+Greg Jaeckelg I'm halfway through filming it ;-)
I'm sorry, I thought this was the dessert channel "death by chocolate."
where is part two?
filming it right now actually ;-)
Mel was just working on his bases again on sunday, on his live cast.
mmmm... chocolat xD
+Manuel Martínez if only!

@@TheTerrainTutor thanks! Really love your stuff!
I wish you would get a better mic
+MrAndy2406 It's on the list mate
heheheh 30:20
+Nick Tait ;-D
Vegan cookies!
+EliosMoonElios They might taste a bit woody ;-)
TheTerrainTutor
Still better than vegan brownies:

Why do you take soooo much time painting the bottoms that will never be seen. I understand maybe hitting the under-edges for when a table isn't perfectly flat, but otherwise it seems like a waste of time and effort.
+xragg It seals the mdf bases, preventing the mdf absorbing air moisture over time and warping mate
Thanks for responding. I hope my comment didnt come off the wrong way.
xragg
it was a valid question, so don't stress bud :-)
I do it too just cause the color is so bright on the bottom and it just dont look complete if i leave it.
Love your videos but could you please quit saying "yeah" 100 times a minute. Like you literally say it when nothing even needs to be said. It's quite annoying yeah.
+Nick Cottle it's a tick
