    This was actually pretty much what I expected this sled to be like. My biggest question, of course, was how well would it do these things for the price. Well, I gotta say, from this review, I definitely think this is worth it for those looking for a sled with these kind of handling characteristics. Having had a Polaris Pro X myself at one point, I can attest to the merits of a sled like that. That said though, I think, for me anyway, I'm still a bit on the fence about this sled. At least for now, when compared to some current north american sleds overall.
    Thanks for another great review. Very informative as usual.

    This is the fastest trailsled you can buy. Made in Lapland, at Rovaniemi Finland. Other brands just dont compare to it, you have to modified them to get to the same level or even close. Greetings from a sledhead at Finland.

    I rode one today. I was bottoming it out on the lowest shock setting on some big hits. It doesn't need to be softer. It is like riding a dirtbike through big bumps. It transfers like crazy, it doesn't have turn on a dime front bite, it takes some body english to make it perform. It's the most playful fun sled I've ridden. I have a 2020 backcountry xrs which I love, but the rave is next level fun

    It’s a race edition we want a sled that you can actually pound on unlike the rest of these warmed over trail sleds. Xrs and xcr are not valved heavy enough for fast people. This is what i have been waiting for. I put one together last Wednesday and checked it all out. Was very impressed I wrote my check for snow check.

    • @pavmentsurfer13
      @pavmentsurfer13 3 роки тому +4

      I dont know who these "fast people" are that need a sled valved stiffer than an XCR for riding in most places in north america. Maybe tug hill or somewhere like that. But for the majority of riders, the XCR is valved just fine. Manufacturers cant make sled JUST for the %5 of people who want to smash bumps all day long. Thats why the lynx is valved too stiff. At ZERO clicks of compression damping, I (at 235lbs) can pound the biggest bumps I can find with this sled and not bottom it out at all. If this sled was valved with the softest setting at %50 compression damping there would be lots of room to make it softer for those who want it that way AND lots of room to make it even stiffer for those who need that.

      I'm one of those "fast people" I have to take my shocks off my xrs and have them re valved stiffer before I even ride it. All because a bunch of weak trail riders couldn't handle the xrs or old.

      @@jbsrev8 You are a minority and are the one who SHOULD have to get your shocks revalved. Manufacturers shouldnt be building sleds ONLY for guys like you because most guys (and girls) ARENT like you. The Rave is so much more than just a big bump sled. It handles better than a G4 and is more comfortable to ride. Doesnt make sense to make it so stiff ONLY guys like you will enjoy it. With that said, my comment about revalving it so it will work for EVERYONE still stands. It doesnt have to work only for you or only for me.

    I own the 2020 Lynx Xterrain 900T with the PPS2 rear KYB46 (front and rear), they need to be broken in before you feel their true potential, they are VERY tiff, in the beginning, my option they need to be ridden minimum 500 km before they are broken in, with my driving style much more say 1000 km. That's why even in the "comfort" setting they still feel hard if they are not broken in. The best is to start in comfort setting then after "awhile" you can adjust them to the Standard setting and they feel very good. But they last for a long time, I have now 3500 km in Std setting + 2 clicks more rebound on my second season and they still perform well. I will service them after the season is done. Great shocks!

    • @pavmentsurfer13
      @pavmentsurfer13 3 роки тому +1

      I actually experienced this. We put 1000km on the lynx we had in only 10 days. Almost all of it was with me on board. I did the test ride segment at about the 600km mark which is when I made my %40 softer recommendation. By the time we gave it back, my opinion had changed. I still think it should be valved softer. But only %25. Not %40. The shocks definitely broke in some.

    I think the big difference here is that at least some of us in Scandinavia see snowmobiling in a bit different way than you guys do in North America. I mean, I'm a sunday sledder and the last sled I rode was a rental Rave RE 600 two years ago, but still I prefer riding the sled 3 hours in the biggest bumps I can find instead of going for all day long trip on smooth trails. If I had to drive for all day I'd probably go for a bit smoother and ''passive'' ride than the Lynx, but for the way I like to ride an active riding style and a bit stiffer suspension setup is better since nothing frustrates as much as a too smooth and bottoming out ride when you want to go max attack. And max attack in big bumps is where the PPS really shines. Just my opinion.

    • @H4nssoon
      @H4nssoon 3 роки тому +2

      Also, most of us in Scandinavia doesnt have much choice when it comes to trails, 90% of our trails are bumpy as hell and nothing like americas groomed trails. That's probably why so many people ride Lynx and also why it's so common to see aftermarket Ohlins shocks on every other sled out for sale.

      PPS2 is 3300 and PPS3 3500. I haven't ridden the 3500 long but I suppose it simply provides better traction in accel and braking and could be a bit more stable in higher speeds due to the greater length, but the downside is probably that it is a bit less nimble in slow-speed trails. And a lot of finnish trails are very narrow and slow. The geometric differences between PPS2 and PPS3 are, as far as I know, very minimal. Not sure about the stock suspension settings, they might be more enduro/snowcross-oriented in the Enduro.

      @EVOVIISWE pps 2 is an older version, if i remember correctly, they changed the placement of some components in the skid and made it a bit stiffer or something like that. There is changes but not that noticeable

    • @HZouna
      @HZouna 3 роки тому +1

      @EVOVIISWE It is an older version but the differences are very few compared to the PPS3. I think the 850 definitely adds to the playfulness of the sled, but would it be quicker on the rough trails than a 600? I wouldn't be so sure.

    It sounds like it'd be perfect for our Alaskan trails, like the ones behind Big lake where the Iron Dog runs through. • @whiteman3075
    @whiteman3075 3 роки тому +8

    Well I’m one of those fast guys that can ride at a pace that most could not comprehend. I races moto cross on quads and dirt bikes for 20 years. Iv got a little experience. I know that sleds are valved for the 90% that will probably never use all the travel other than big holes or bottoms of hills.
    I’m just saying this sled was built for me the guy that wants to buy it and ride it not send shocks out to get them to fit me.
    I currently have a 2021 xcr and it’s definitely not stiff enough. Rear suspension is maxed out.
    I ride a lot of very high speed stuff and for most part xcr does it. Also just came off a ski doo 850.
    I’m a master ski doo technician for a living so it would just be natural for me to ride a BRP product but was having hard time finding a doo with proper seat position. That’s where the axis came in. Love the seating and standing position. It’s as close to dirt bike as it gets. Like it even better than the new matrix.
    So when I got the rave in a week and a half ago now I inspected it to see what they did with motor mounts and they are indeed summit mounts. Box 1 checked. The running boards are beefy check 2. Shocks are the highest end of what a sled has came with box stock. Check 3. FYI I would spend 6k on just suspension back in the day to make a quad competitive in the pro am/ expert class.
    The seat is the rite height for me and is firm. Check 3
    Looked over rear skid and it is indeed like a Polaris rush rear but within a skid not the same but very similar. We all know rush was to pound bumps.
    After I looked at all the things the lynx had addressed from its sister company I said I need one do the paperwork and I wrote the check.
    This is the sled for the hard core rider not the one who wants that sofa feeling.
    Don’t buy it if you want a straight trail sled.
    Should be market as it is race edition. Not race stickers like the rest do then valve them for a groomed trail.
    Xrs is not what it use to be. This is gana fill the needs of the hard core guy.

    • @robertlabonte6092
      @robertlabonte6092 3 роки тому +1

      Now, Jason Whiteman, That is how your write a review! Honest and truthful. Well done!
      I will buy what I want, so Polaris or Ski doo name does not mean I buy their brand. The " dirt bike analogy" is the perfect way to describe the ride. I had the Axis and rode the Matryx and the xrs in all lengths. The axis was the "dirt bike" feel and ride and as you stated. The Matryx has advanced that platform. Ski Doo xrs rear suspension seems more plush but will not corner as well as the Polaris Matryx or even the Axis. This is an unbiased opinion and when I can get a ski doo buddy to try the Polaris they agree, They still stay with ski doo brand most of the time but they agree.....we all have our reasons and loyalty. Buy what you want and ride.
      I own both the xrs and matryx now and have bought 12 ski doo and 6 Polaris sleds. So I am not bashing any brand. For handling trails in the upper northeast the Polaris Matryx or the Axis is the better trail sled. Ski doo has a more plush rear suspension and great ski lift when wanted.
      So my one question to you, Jason Whiteman, is do you feel as though the lynx platform mirrors the Matryx? You do like the seat height but will you need to add a riser to stand? I am 5ft 11 with a 30 inch in seem! short legs and long torso and 180 pounds ( not that anybody cares, lol) Just asking Jason for his input...I can tell he knows his sh..t!
      I "see" it to be almost the same, helping the "dirt bike rider" style. Especially for us longer torso guys who like to stand, but always need to add a riser, in my case the 8 inch rox on my last 6 sleds. I even put it on my axys and that is a "dirt bike" ride.
      So hit me with your thoughts/recommendations because as of now I prefer the Matryx over my xrs. I did not ride a linx but trying to get to a dealer next week giving demos Thanks!

    • @whiteman3075
      @whiteman3075 3 роки тому +1

      @@robertlabonte6092 so I think they did a little shorter riser because it is better for corners. I know that everyone try’s to go taller and I use to do the same on bikes and quads until I learner for speed in corners and for ultimate control the little lower bar hight keeps you in control better.
      The closer the rider triangle the better within reason. Obviously the larger your frame the bigger the triangle.
      If the bar hight gets too high you start loosing control easier and get thrown off balance into a danger zone. Keep your triangle rite and you can ride like a mad man.

      @pavmentsurfer13 3 роки тому +3

      The pro 46s are valved so that at full soft they would probably work fine for you. This means they are too stiff. Riders such as yourself SHOULD be riding with the compression clickers set higher than zero. Moving the soft setting to %50 would give riders like you lots of room to stiffen it up even more, but give riders who dont run huge bumps all day the ability to soften it up as well. It doesnt have to be one way or the other.

    Though I’ve never rode this sled I bet any rider that weighs 200 pounds or more and rides aggressively would love the stiffer valved shocks and there are a lot of riders in the U.S. like that. I love the uncoupled skid on my Rush Pro-S with XCR track shocks but with the stock shocks it bottomed too easily. Rider style and weight play a huge role in suspension compliance. Even if you don’t ride aggressively and weigh 250 or more this would probably be a good trail sled for you just my guess.

      I weight 235lbs. Our sled is set FULL SOFT. I cant get it to bottom out. I rode the biggest bumps I could find as fast as I could ride. The suspension works incredible, but its just too stiff if a guy my size can ride that hard and not bottom it out. The current soft settings should be at %50. That way smaller riders or people who want a softer ride can soften it up, but bigger guys or guys who want to pound bumps all day can still stiffen it up. It doesnt have to be one way or the other. Simply adjusting the valving would make this sled work for everyone.

    Make it softer.. Haha, here in Finland general complaint is that oem shocks are too soft and bottoms all the time. Fast guys revalve them harder...
    I think rave re's have been quite suitable for my riding. A bit on the soft side but I'm not fast. I have really old (-11) 800 xtrim boondocker and had to buy 46hlcr to the front skid because the original didn't hold up on the big moguls. And by the way the first boondocker is basically a trail sled. Really bad in powder but great on trail. New ones seem to beat the heck out on both.
    For the rave: it gets better the faster you drive. Just aim the top of the moguls for the front skid shock. 3500 is really nice for smaller high frequency bumps. It floats over the bumps at lower speed. Even the 3300 had to ride 70-80 to be comfortable in high frequency bumpy trail.

But im 235lbs and ive had this sled set to FULL soft from day one and I CANT get it to bottom out. That means its TOO STIFF. These shocks are super adjustable and have a wide range of adjustability. If the current soft setting was moved to %50, riders who want a super stiff ride could bump it up even more than where it is now, but riders who want a softer ride would have some adjustment too. With shocks like these ones, it doesnt have to be one way or another.

      The reason you wouldnt just "buy and XRS is you want softer suspension" is because the lynx doesnt handle like an XRS at all. It handles better. • @johnm6113

      I don't think you're thinking this through thoroughly, this is the same sled that sold throughout Scandinavia and several other European countries, you don't hear any of them whining about the valving being too stiff (Hat's off to them, I guess they must be better riders than us NA guys :-/ ) Also you're riding a brand new sled, the suspension and shocks still have to have time to break in, the suspension will get softer smoother as they do. And as you not bottoming on your day long ride, maybe you weren't riding the sled as hard as you think you were, It happens a lot of times to most people. I've seen ST reviews before of past rave reviews XRS suspended sleds and the suspension on those are jokes (poorly sprung & poorly valved) You can bottom those sleds all day long if that your goal. All the North American manufacturers make great sleds with compliant soft smooth riding suspensions, you have more than enough different models to choose from if you want softer valve suspension. There's a group of riders who really do want a overly stiffly valved sled. Trails around me resemble snocross tracks come Sunday. Let’s hope Lynx keeps the hardcore crowd happy and keeps them valved firmly If it's not your cup of tea look elsewhere.

The XCR is just better. The XCR also rides better for typical north american trail riding. Theres plenty of adjustment to make it stiffer if you need that. But it can be setup to ride fantastic on typical trails from smooth, to sunday afternoon bumpy. The Lynx is stiff. If you dont mind stiff, or if you want to really pound bumps super hard all day, this is the right sled for you. I have a friend, tom, in pennsylvania who spends %95 of his time riding ungroomed backwoods trails that are just whooped to crap all the time. I hate riding like that. He loves it. I told him to buy a Lynx, dont think about it... just do it. He tested one for about 10 minutes and bought it. For him it was perfect. For me, on an average day, too stiff. Think about all the 90s and early to mid 2000s sleds, they all have a very low center of gravity but they handle nothing like a rider forward sled. You want to sit ontop of the sled to be able to handle it and use you weight to control the movement. You werent listening. I said "higher effective ROLL CENTRE". There is a HUGE difference between the centre of gravity and the roll centre of the sled. The new Skidoo G4s with the RAS X and Rmotion X suspension have a LOW roll centre. That means when you turn into a corner the sled doesnt weight the outside ski the way it should and the sled pushes. Snowmobiles NEED to weight their outside ski. The higher effect roll centre of the links allows it to roll it weight onto the outside ski in the corner. The weighted ski bites into the snow the way it should and the sled turns predictably.

RE models will not be set any softer as these sleds have reputation that you can hit any bump at any speed. If you want a sofa buy a Skidoo. Rave RE 600 etec is much more balanced package than Rave RE 850 is when it comes to bumpy trail riding all day long while not tiring the rider. Anyways Lynx RE snowmobiles are designed to go over the bumps fast speed rather than slow down on them.

    I don’t agree with your recommendation that the shocks should come stock with softer valving. If it’s too stiff then you very likely bought the wrong sled. I’m sick and tired of having to buy hundreds of dollars in springs and shock revalving to get a bump sled to work as it was advertised. Now before you cry out, “Dude, your obviously a 300 lb fat ass, no wonder you need suspension work.” No, I’m just over 200 lbs and have found sleds seem to be designed for 150lb riders. The Lynx sounds like they stayed true to the Euro suspension spec and I hope they leave it that way. Unfortunately I bet they heed your advice and that from other testers and water this sled down come this fall. Then it’ll only be big bump capable in myth and marketing hype. That won’t be acceptable of $17,000+.

Why are people convinced modern sleds need to be rider upright and tall. I'll never understand. An old sled turns better in tighter terrain than a modern sled

      Hmmmm.... youve clearly missed the ENTIRE point of my review. But I get it, the Rave should be reserved for only the HARDEST, most awesome, hardcore riders. Because those types of riders represent only a small part of the market. So thats a smart move.
      Im 235lbs. I raced snowcross for 10 years. I won a pro national championship on the first Polaris Pro X. I know how to pound bumps HARD and ride FAST. If a guy my size cant get a sled to bottom out with the shocks set to FULL SOFT... theyre too stiff. This sled has so much more potential than just being reserved for guys who love to bang their heads off the handlebars all day. It COULD be a great all round sled for a wide range or riders. If the current soft setting was moved to %50 there would LOTS of adjustment for guys like you to stiffent it up even more and ride whatever line of craters you want. But it could also be softened up a bit for guys who like to ride hard and fast but dont want to rattle their brains all day.

      @@pavmentsurfer13 great reply. How many of these guys raced snowX for a DECADE? If the suspension can’t be bottomed by a 235 pound rider at full soft, then a 160 pound rider is going to feel like it’s fully locked out. If you put the shocks on max preload, even a 250+ isn’t going to get much action out of them. What’s wrong with asking for a little more range in the shocks? Nothing!
      Maybe your test sled was valved a little on the stiffer side than the others out there? It’s Possible?

      Yes, it does. Just got back from a 145 mile ride. Switched back and forth between the VR1 and the Lynx. The Lynx doesnt handle QUITE as good as the VR1 but it does handle amazing. Id be happy to ride this sled all day, everyday if the suspension was a bit softer. This is why the comments about "it should be left super stiff" bug me. Yes, the skid is uncoupled. But on our ride today, this sled out handled all the other coupled sleds in the group other than the VR1. Coupling is the final answer. Proper design of the whole sled is.
