The last track to complete my Seven Bits album is a (melodic progressive?) trance track using only the Yamaha AN1x as tone generator for all melodic elements. Drums and noise sweeps are provided from software and Yamaha S90 ES. Additional processing includes EQing, side-chain compression and subtle reverberation.
Every instrument had to be prepared and recorded separately since the AN1x has no multimode and only 10 voices of polyphony.
Seiryu is Japanese for "Blue Dragon", my synonym for the AN1x as it's blue, sounds rough and raw, and yet can make you fly. ;)
The album Seven Bits contains my last seven "One Synth One Song" projects plus Corgi. Seven songs, and also MIDI uses seven bits to transmit values (except for pitch bend and sysex).

The AN1X is still one of the greatest VA synths.
This synth is a trance producer s secret,This synth is truly analogish n sexy i rarely get to hear about this one did some intense research and here i am,Fairly cheap and monstrous when it comes to sound designing...better than the waldorf,novation,behringer,arturia

I used to have a an1x but never could never bring the best out of it. I still say if it had built in drum kits patterns,would have been a massive hit with synth experts
Dude, you've been a huge inspiration to me over the years, from way back with your X5D and AN1x demo vids. I respect your commitment to these older hardware keyboards, and the music you produce with them is so clean and masterfully done. Still a big fan of 'The Anthem', its still on my regular playlist! Oh, amd this track is tremendous too.

H-how.... Just this old synth, and yet it sounds better than 90% of what's on ASoT these days??? Wow.
It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking you need better (newer?) gear, better plugins and so on. JayB proves this false time and time again. Look at some of the songs made with Yamaha XG gear even. What sounds is knowing the results you want, and how to get the most out of each device. Relatively simple things like finding out a mostly preset based synth has a MIDI CC# for Filter Cutoff in the midi implementation chart in the back of the manual... makes a massive difference. Anyway JayB's got some talent for sure :)

Not really. The RM1x is a ROMpler while the AN1x is VA synthesis.

Wonderful sounds! I bought an AN1X last month and I am so excited to work some of your sounds in my music aswell as other sounds. It's a very nice sounding synth with really it's own soundcolour.
Nearest to this that I own is the PLG150-AN board inside one of four MU100R rack modules, with five other PLG boards. Considered adding a second board for 10-note polyphony etc.

Roll off -6dB/o with highpass filter at 40hz. Sub dominates the mix. This is a service announcement not a criticism of your music it's an awesome song I just like to hear more of it in my car 😜
I admit my mastering high pass is at 30 Hz at 48 dB/Oct. Maybe that's the problem. 🤔

Congrats on your purchase! And no, unfortunately it's not multitimbral. It's duotimbral if you use both scenes independently but that's limiting you in many ways.

Very cool JayB :) I bought an AN1X last month, greatly inspired by your masterful sound design! Only problem is that I can't transfer patches from/to the synth, using AN1XEdit software :( It looks like the Synth is connected to my PC, as I can sound notes on the synth using the software virtual keyboard. When I try request a voice from the synth in the software, it gives an error. Do you know how to use AN1xEdit to transfer patches to PC and vice versa? (Help files doesn't say) Not sure if my cheap USB-Midi cable could be the issue. Only settings on synth I can see are the channels numbers to transfer and receive (set to 1), and Device No: All. Your help would be much appreciated! I want to replace some factory presets with some of your sounds :)
If it's one of those 10€ interfaces then it really might be the case. Those usually can't handle full SysEx dumps. Another issue could be the device ID miss matching. That's something you can set on the matrix on the right half of the synth. It should be either 1 or ALL.

Hi JayB, Success! Got a new (more expensive) USB-Midi cable. The electronics must be better to handle more data transfer, its working a treat! I've tried some of your patches, so good! Very happy to be able to explore the AN1x going forward. Keep well and wishing you a great 2024 😊
