I don't think I've seen anything more universal than design principles it's insane. Using contrast in music production (deep kick & bright percussion, etc) is also such a game changer. Theres so much to experiment with when you study basic design principles, and it's something I've never regretted learning.
Negative Space is one of the strongest tools for art out there, I am currently a visual artist (3D Art more specifically) and learning art fundamentals, and more specifically this one concept, was one of the biggest changes in my career. Now that I am learning music I notice that the overlap between visual arts and music is quite big and a lot of the concepts translate from one to the other, also why I am trying to mostly focus on this in my journey. Thanks for the video, really great to see the concept in action and explained in a music context!
Great analogies with visual art! I always envision the picture before creating a track, and it's an amazing idea to translate the image you want to create into music.
I've never thought about this before, very interesting and a lot to think about, always look forward to see your videos in my feed. You have a great way of explaining things and you would make a wonderful teacher!
I liked the video but I don't think it is about negative space ;) For me it would have been to sidechain your melody on soothe to create a filter on something that isn't even here for example. Keep everything apart for the main melody that is removed from a total by a soothe utility sidechained on the original melody 😊
Thought the same. The cutout of the tree was a good example but didn't match to the samples later in the video. I would understand negative space as something like a hole in between of sounds which fading out matching the attack from a non existing sound (like ducking where the original fitting element is muted). A silence where you hear clearly which element could fit but still isn there. The Video is more about filling spaces than the idea of negative spaces.
You are good person and when I was sighing Contracts Globally i didn't have anyone to teach me but because I was one among us who understood Techno and we were the public i learned it myself and on Academy of Art it was Contrasting but it's just term meaning is same and i hope that people will learn and use knowledge you revealing. When I did impossible effect was not inspiering but evoked Ego and Vanity no matter that i am Ambient Drone Space Ambient Compositional Music Artist. And i couldn't use PayPal because of Sanctions and i was just Born in Yugoslavia 😂. Life is Beautiful.
This is exactly how i would visualize sidechain multiband compression on a main channel like vocals...etc it's like a camera filming scenery but everytime a rabbit appears it blurs its surroundings to focus on it and follow its movements with higher resolution and framerate
compressors create negative space in dB like it doesn't make a sound, but you can definitely hear it especially in the mix with other instruments. Try using multiple brands of compressors on one track to increase the effect. ty
@@TheRealPaulCaplin i did. but the promised content wasn't there. it's not rocket science that there are quiet moments in a track where details are worked out. Musicians have been doing that for 1000 years. the thumbnail suggests that a secret is being revealed.
I can't understand what this process has to do with negative space...Negative space in music is silence. What I see in this video is basically making music. Filling silence with arrangement choices and give the right focus on the elements you want to be in focus when they must be in focus. I don't get it...
Negative space doesn’t have to be blank. At least that’s Alice’s thesis on it in this video. Positive space is your main element, while negative space would be the rest of the elements that highlight the main element. Hope this helps!

As a designer by trade, and trance producer on the side, I LOVED this video!
I love that you see things outside of the box and have an extraordinary sense of music composition.

Could be cool to talk about using counter melodies to contrast the main melody?
I do this, but never knew it had a name!
Fascinating 🖖🫀
It really is!
GOODDDDDDD❗❗❗🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

😱😱
Dark Matter!
Fiz um short do TRAIL BLAZERS NBA Summer League is insane
Next video: Dark Matter aka silence 😂
Hmmm, saying “negative space” over and over again while you add reverb is kinda lame.
tutorial eli brown techno style

👍
whats the song 8:40 ?
It is one of my own. It will be released in less than 2 weeks.
Everytime you bring in a new sound remove other sounds to make space so the listener hears the new sound.
Song at 4:20?

You could have also called the video: how to use reverbs. 😅
Very unfair. Did you not watch the whole video?

« No one » is two words 😂
🔥🔥🔥
That is what happens if you have to crank out a video every week or so at all cost. :-(((
