  • In this video we're listening to more from Prefab Sprout. The last son, video included, was a little on the odd side for us. But, we're not going to determine what a band is like by one song. So, let's see what else they have to offer. Enjoy!

The song is Paddy commenting on how in the UK radio stations had fallen in love with Bruce Springsteen and how Paddy saw his songs had no relevance to the UK. As a result the song got very little air play

I love that no one else sounds like Prefab Sprout. His lovely voice, those wispy female background vocals, that alt pop sound - they’re unique and I love them.

Thanks for the mention, Cynthia & Chris! Paddy McAloon is a brilliant songwriter and his brother and bandmate, Martin, is a fine bass player too!
The "From Langley Park To Memphis" album from which this song is taken, is perhaps their most commercial offering, but it is full of well crafted intelligent pop songs. Thomas Dolby produced several tracks on the album. The record also includes guest performances by Pete Townsend and Stevie Wonder.
From the same album, I would also recommend, "Nightingales" and "Hey Manhattan!".

This was written after Prefab Sprout meant with their US representative & were suprised to see Bruce Springsteen who told them he was a fan. The representative told them they should write songs like Springsteen if they wanted a hit & thus .. cheeky Cars & Girls.

Hey, Prefab Sprout is a great band that is far more clever and subtle than you think. They really deserve a deeper dive. From Wiki "Lyrically, "Cars and Girls" is a comment on Bruce Springsteen's use of romantic metaphors in his songs.[5] McAloon felt Springsteen utilised "a poetry that an Englishman can’t understand".[6] The song is often seen as indicating a personal distaste for Springsteen, but McAloon elaborated on the lyrics in a 1992 interview; "The point of the parody is this: not that I think Bruce Springsteen is crap, it's that I think a lot of his audience get into him on a patriotic level that he doesn't intend. They misinterpret him, their enjoyment of him is inaccurate, all very imperialist American. I wanted to write a song about someone who was thick white trash, listening to Springsteen, and saying 'But our lives aren't like that'".

The "Brucie" mentioned in the song, refers to Bruce Springsteen and how his songs evoke in the minds of some British people, images of America, freedom and the wide open road. But the reality, over here in the UK, is that you are more likely to be stuck in a traffic jam somewhere on the A34 in the pouring rain!

As for Prefab Sprout pop for sure but what a band. One of the best in this genre. And what a songwriter. Definitely check out ‘Bonny’ from 2 Wheels Good (Steve McQueen) and almost anything from Jordan the Comeback.

Prefab Sprout were one of those pretentious early 80’s pop bands I eschewed with much gusto ..
however , I did like this song whenever I heard it in the radio , I wouldn’t buy any of their stuff nor seek them out , but I know a well crafted , well written and produced pop song when I hear one , and this is one ✊

I disagree that Prefab Sprout and this song specifically are "just pop songs". That's the point - they sound like just simple pop songs until you listen to the lyrics.
    Have a closer listen.
Interestingly enough, some of Paddy McAloon's songs (the lead singer and songwriter) have been covered by such as Lisa Stanfield, Snow Patrol, The Zombies and Kylie Minogue.

I don't want to cause upset, but I never understood the appeal of these guys. I cringed when David Ellis compared The Go-Betweens to these guys. Again, not my thing to put artists down whatsoever, but he might as well have said Prince is Minneapolis's answer to KC & The Sunshine Band. I get Prefab Sprout. I had their Steve McQueen album, so I know what I'm talking about. But next to what The Go-Betweens were doing on 16 Lovers Lane, this is syrup.

Love this song; it always pains me when people start their Prefab Sprout journey with King Of Rock 'n' Roll, because I can't bloody *stand* it - not the song itself, but the record, which is ruined by Thomas Dolby's *horrible* production, with that maddening synth motif. I think Dolby produced this too, but much more sympathetically. Neil Conti's drumming adds some muscle to the sound too.
