- Songs That Mean Something - Episode 1: Bonny by Prefab Sprout
This reaction is dedicated to Bella Luna.
I had never heard of Prefab Sprout before this reaction and it hit right between the eyes of my musical tastes. Getting to read the memory of your road trip added another level of appreciation for the song and almost gave me a sort of "movie scene" in my brain with this song as the soundtrack. It was actually wonderful and I'm thankful you shared both the memory and the song!

Bella Luna here. OMG, you made my day reacting to this!! One of my favourite bands from the 80s and loved how you enjoyed them right away. This track is from the Album Steve McQueen, released in 1985, the whole album is fire 🔥 and stands the test of time. If you like the Sprouts, their first 4 albums are the best. Thank you so much for playing this, so exciting ❤ I have a huge smile on my face right now 😊
thanks for reccing that! in the late 80s when i was wallowing (very happily) in music from the uk - largely new wave - in my nyc-metro-area hellish life, a guy whose floppy hair i distinctly remember in my friend and acquaintance circle was super into them and pushing me in their direction. another friend scrawled their lyrics (among many others) all over the notes she folded up and passed me in the halls between classes. i picked up one cassette, and i remember liking them, and then high school ended and life took a turn and i was surrounded by different people and suddenly in a new town, and another new town, and another new town.... but all my music came with me, and i still have most of it, and i'm 97% sure that 'from langley park to memphis' is in my closet on cassette with about 500 other albums. thank you for the flashback! (and thank you, too, walterooski! ;) )
cracking album it is
@@michaelparton71 it holds a special place in my heart ❤
Bought this album in 85 still play and love it , seen them only once in concert but have bought all their albums .Paddy is a genius
loved your story! really enriched the listening experience : )
I'm jealous. The rush and wonder of Prefab Sprout at a first encounter. Mine was 40 yrs ago but still fresh 💫
40 years later and I'm still in awe. Two wheels good/ Steve McQueen is a classic.
The deep male voice at the end: Save your speeches, flowers are for funerals (2x).... Paddy and Prefab are one of my all-time favorites. His lyrics are incredible.
The whole album is as good!
Indeed ❤
So true.
A great band. I would highly recommend that you listen to their first album 'Swoon' as it is a masterpiece. Listen to it 3 times in a row and you will be hooked for life, just like me.
One of my favourite bands ever. Thank you for your video about Prefab Sprout. Great!!
Heard this band for the first time in 2019 after having considered myself somewhat of an expert when it came to '80s pop, they are far and away the most underappreciated band I have ever encountered and I hadn't been touched by music like that in a really long time. Steve McQueen, From Langley Park to Memphis, and Jordan: The Comeback are all just ridiculously good albums, and even the later ones from 2009 and 2014 are really good. Watch all the interviews with Paddy McAloon you can find on UA-cam, the guy is somewhat of a genius perfectionist recluse, just a super interesting dude. Go down the rabbit hole with this group you won't regret it.
just found your reaction to Prefab Sprout - wow! thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it --too many British bands are missed by American reactors -- their loss!
Steve McQueen is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece! No one sounds like prefab Sprout or ever will. These guys are in my top three of all time, I'm 61 years old and have heard tons of music in my life. Their music gets better with age, all the rest of their albums are great too. I tend to favor Steve McQueen, but can't remember if I bought it before or after From Langley Park to Memphis. I first heard them on the Homegrown radio station I grew up listening to, WHFS, in Bethesda, Maryland USA. That station played all the cutting-edge obscure stuff that no mainstream station would touch!!😎✌
I’d have to concur with you-they’re my favorite band of all time, with XTC, Big Star, Jellyfish, etc…too many good bands to name
Hey man you finally found these guys. Know them for nearly 30 years. Mystical magic for sure by any measure. just beautiful!!
I was a teenager on the 80s but just discovered Prefab Sprout only a few years ago. So many great songs! Love them!
It always amazes me when there's an old band that I've never heard of before , That's this good❤
Not even in my top 10 Prefab Sprout songs. 'Appetite' is an exceptional song.
All my insights from retrospect ..the entire album is amazing
Thanks for your positive ,much love to you and your family ❤
Thanks for mentioning the swirly noises. I hadn’t heard them before!
Great album but I absolutely love the acoustic version of this album released 2006 I think, as a twofer with the original. I’m sure it won’t age like the original production because of the stunning stripped down acoustic guitar and fantastically clever new arrangements!
Altough being a genuine new-waver those days, this was one of my fav albums. Got me to some very calm and pleasing imaginary places
I always say that Prefab is like Steely Dan if they were led by a wild-eyed eccentric English poet.
Awesome reaction
Loved this album in my mid teens for the melodies harmonies and quality of production. Still love it now for that but the lyrics just have me in bits. How could such a young man write like that. Brilliant stuff. Try Talk Talk albums if you don't know the. Albums not just their couple of hits.
Hey my friend you have stumbled onto one of the most meaningful, prolific, simple yet special songs of all time. Even Paul McCartney was impressed. Listen and enjoy. It is as magical as it sounds. RIP Paddy
Forgive me for asking, but why the RIP Paddy?
he ain't dead at time of writing I'm pretty sure
Great recommendation! Great reaction! I've never heard of this band which is odd cuz they sound like they're well within my music taste spectrum... Loved it! 💜🦇💚
That was a fun song! Never heard of that band either!
This is new to me as well. It sounds like a good song for a long drive
Voted for the last time today. Good luck! I hope you skate with Tony!
The line at the end? "Save your speeches, flowers are for funerals."
The whole album is top notch,
There are not many bands where you can seriously argue that they are top 8 ever. Prefab Sprout is one of those.
Great song and great band!
One of my favorites...more like everthing but the girl, china crisis, style council to me though
Yes I'm a big fan of all those three bands also, they really held their own in the 80s!😏
It reminds me of some Canadian bands in the 80s who had some New Wave sounds but hadn't dived completely into that pool.
Which bands?! I wanna hear them 😂
I think you are confusing New Order with the sounds of Thomas Dolby. He was involved with the production and had performing credits. His piping keyboard sounds come from his 1984 album "The Flat Earth" and was a perfect mix with the Prefabs. One of my favorite albums by Prefab Sprout.
Possibly the best 80's guitar pop tune written. Paddy McAloon. Geordie Genius.
FYI: Of all the songs I've reacted to, this is actually the one I've returned to the most.
Thomas Dolby production and sonic soundscapes is crucial to this album greatness
Yeh for me this is the sweet spot of their sound. I think from Jordan it was a bit much production.
@@simongregory3114 you dissin the barnyard cat???
@@realest_shirts lol I'd forgotten that song existed. Just listened to it again. Probably the cleverest piece of nonsense ever
@@simongregory3114 yeah that song kinda grates on me if i'm honest lol
They can tell you whatever they want, but... the 80s rule!
A Thomas Dolby Produced Album. 'Moving the River' ... Utterly amazing Song. That makes voice was also Paddy. Please could you review a contemporary of Paddy McAloon's -Scritti Politti and 'A little Knowledge' from their album 'Cupid & Psyche 85'. The whole album was designed to be heard on acetate under a top notch stylus....... Trust me. The Songs of Prefab Sprout get you going? Then you'll not be disappointed. The sounds of the vocals provided by BJ Nelson and Green Gartside are spine tingling the album came out the same year as Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen(featured here) both of them hugely underrated British Bands.
If you haven’t done so…please react to “I remember that” by Prefab.
i got no story, but it is okay. it's c duncan vvith a song called "he came from the sun". i think, this song needs more ears.
This reminds me of my ex-boyfriend. Prefab Sprout was one of his favourite bands. When he dumped in me in 1999 after 9 years and I had to find a new place to live and my whole world was turned upside down and I was heartbroken, I was lucky to find the flat I still live in. I had to renovate it and whilst I was doing that I listened to a lot of music. But it was one song in particular that gave me my strentgh back: I Will Survive. But not the Gloria Gaynor original, it was the version of a band named Cake. Here is a link to a live performance (hopefully without copyright issues) ua-cam.com/video/mi8jJwS_nPE/v-deo.html
Try Golden Calf by PS that is bitchin'
Good on you, young lad. My first meeting was Pearly Gates: And you my man, your ears are so subtle. I am impressed.
I fell in love w/ my comrade at the BIG banking company who adored "Protest Songs"... She (not them) preferred another, but that's - again -
another story.
Anyhow, I mean "Jesse James Bolero" and "Michael"... That extreme intelligence on perfect pare with tangible rhythm and innuendos like any easter egg you might look for. Most underrated this side of Nick Cave? That's a stretch, but I am Swedish. So.
Like yer tee, btw.
He was about to become a catholic priest... he liked pop better. Enough for us.
Cheers!
Takes 3 minutes to start
Can't you just listen to the song and then comment on it?
Of course you haven’t you like most of the millions of people born after the 80’s have no clue about music
No need to talk during the song, better to wait till it's done. No?
They have to stop and talk or it gets pulled for copyright if you just play it through
