Yeah! Whenever I see this ED, I already have a hard enough time holding back the tears, but that last image with Nina sleeping against Alexander, and the “Darling” lyric I hear over it is enough to make me want to cry out loud.
What I like about the 2003 version is the development of the story before that tragedy happened. In brotherhood, nina was just like anpassing character.
Actually the Brotherhood version still is an improvement over the chapter in the Manga. In the Manga it's just as short but Brotherhood adds a scene showing Nina cowering behind Alexander while Tucker and his wife are fighting. It gives it a bit of depth that the Manga chapter didn't have. It's sad in each version but if I had to rank each one it would be 2003 Anime, Brotherhood, Manga. Ironically, the Manga versions of the first episodes of Brotherhood are much better than the Brotherhood versions except for the most important chapter of them all which paradoxically was much shorter than the other chapters.
I like Nina (and Alexander) more in 2003 than in Brotherhood mainly because she got more screentime and her bonds with Ed and Al feels like they were family, making the reveal to her tragic fate more impactful and emotional. Also, the fact that this episode has a special ending made specifically for this episode just adds more salt to the wound.

I love both series, but the classic has a way of playing with your emotions. We all know they didn't have to do this, especially since this ending is never used again. They just did it to fuck us up.
ah i remember back then i was really young, like 16 or something of those lines......that chapter made me almost tear up, and then i see fucking Ed crying in the ending.........................

This theme is honestly just the icing on the cake for how utterly painful that episode was, because it was at this point that it hits you: They're both really gone. They're gone and they're never coming back. Sleep tight, Nina. You were a good boy, Alexander.

Geez, FMA 03 is a really messed up series, even more than the manga and Brohood. It's bad enough what Tucker does to his daughter but it's her demise in the 03 Series that's really messed up!
Yeah but i still think the best version is the manga! 03 is too dark/ edgy at times! While Brotherhood only gets good after starting to adapt the manga well!
This anime have been broadcast in our local channel. They usual not finishing the ending song after the show. But after this episode, they did not interupt the ending song.
This ending really hurts, especially when you watched the episode. He's so close to the breaking point, you can feel it, see it in his smile... But he still... STILL... has the strength to keep moving forward, putting up a brave face... I already loved the song, this made it more so...
I think this outro in general is the most depressing and storytelling of them all. The rest as far as I'm concerned just starts with Winry and from that I'm not going to continue.
Brotherhood only had ONE miserable episode with Nina and her dog so her death was nowhere near as painful as in the original anime (where they made us spend episodeS with her and her dog)..... this is the only beef I have with Brotherhood.
Let me explain to you why this is the manga is structed like this: We see a little of the failed H Transmutation after that we get to this one desert city get the reveals of their bodies there after that we get to the train and the coal town in the present building ed up and than this is supposed to be a shock moment in the story! their back story isd also saved for when they met izumi!
ugh cant get over this episode, it was so sad i remmber i first watched it when i got from work late at night.... and the ending it just make feel even sadder with the images of nina :(

In fact it is exactly the opposite, in Brotherhood Ed and Al remembered Nina in a very important moment at the end of the show, it was the version of 03 that made only(but a great) touching ending and then never spoke about her again.

True hes basically one of these villains that you can barely symapthize with although his picture is based on 03 where he does get some humanizing moments later on in mangahood tho yeah outside of maybe the fact that he thought there was no other way and still seemed to love nina in a twisted way there is little reason to like him!

Same. I know I'm in the minority, but I definitely prefer the 2003 version over Brotherhood for the expanded Tucker family storyline alone.
That's because the Brotherhood version skipped of lot of what was already adapted in the 2003 version, the Tucker family, the Mine arc, etc.
Brotherhood's biggest fault was that it relied heavily on people who had watched the 2003 version prior.

原作だとニーナすぐ登場してすぐ退場って感じで感情移入しづらかったけど、アニメだと数話登場した後に退場だったからこのedが染みる
国家錬金術師試験の受験勉強までの下宿先がタッカー家ってアニオリの設定はエルリック兄弟とニーナの微笑ましい日常が見れて良かったよな…アニメスタッフは人の心ないんか
