Because when Scar killed her father she cried even in her Chimera form. Her humanity was still intact not knowing how her father destroyed her life.
For me it's how it set the tone of the series and asked a very important question at the start of the story: "What kind of alchemist is Edward?" It tells us his morals and values and he will do anything to not be like this kind of scientist. Which he does follow through with throughout until the very end. And the little details like you said, how a child will cry for their parent even though the parent did them wrong and hurt them. Such great writing.
Yeah... Edward could have used his Alchemy to put Nina's soul in a doll or something until he got a philosopher stone and fixed her... or changed that chimera girl into a furry beast human like other chimeras... But no... they gave up and basically told Scar: "here, put her down. We literally aren't going to try anything to help this girl. We give up... but we are still going to try to fix our limbs and get Alphonse's whole body back from the void.... so... we ain't got time for Nina and her dog!"

Alphonse didn't get his body back by cloning his body with science and putting his soul back in with some religious ritual. It was alchemy that did it.
@@julianmarco4185 You definitely misunderstood the premise of Fullmetal Alchemist. They definitely show just how amazing alchemy can be and what it can achieve, but in doing so they also demonstrate the folly of relying wholly on this science. There are a wealth of examples in the story, but I think the best foundational example is the brothers' original attempt at human transmutation: the resurrection of their mother. There, they researched diligently, measured accurately, and performed the alchemy perfectly. What did they get for their result? A soulless thing, reflected in grotesque body horror. Obviously, their understanding was incomplete, and you can make the argument that they needed more research so they can re-attempt the transumtation. But later in the story, the brothers' are caught flat-footed when a pregnant woman goes into labour. Their alchemy wasn't going to help in that situation, but luckily their childhood friend Winry was there to help the labour process along; not without alchemy, but through midwifery. It is in that episode that the brothers realise how awesome nature creating humans without alchemy are. The audience is also invited to compare birth with human transmutation. Alchemy requires some knowledge and ingredients only, but it leads to disaster. Childbirth is difficult, but a human with a soul is born. With the above examples alone, you can easily reach the conclusion that alchemy, while useful, can be an addictive shortcut to horrifying catastrophes. There are some things that alchemy should not be allowed to touch (e.g. human transmutation, which incidentally is outlawed in the story) and for nature to run its course. Don't believe me yet? You mentioned Lust, Gluttony (I'm assuming, as Pride doesn't make a habit of eating humans) and Envy, all homunculii that are the embodiment of the pinnacle of alchemy. Lust killed Mustang and Havoc easily, and sought to kill Riza. However, just when it seemed hopeless, it turned out that Mustand survived, cauterised his and Havoc's wounds, and burned Lust into ashes. You could that was because flame alchemy trumps Lust's alchemy-borne powers, but that doesn't explain how and why he managed to survive long enough to win. The correct takeaway is that Mustang was willing to go that far for his loved ones. Incidentally, the way Lust dies is an irony: she is lust, but it is love that defeats her. And this irony is extended to the other homunculii. Gluttony ate other humans, but died being eaten by another. Envy was an androgynous shapeshifter who can become anyone he wanted, which he used to hurt and kill humans, but at the end of his life he was an ugly little thing who didn't want to admit to being envious of humans for being determined to be better. The point is that alchemy has limits, and cannot fix everything. This irony goes even further with human alchemists. Alphonse was "haunting" a suit of armor, but the point was that he is unable to feel warmth of anything (including a mother's warmth, which was his punishment from Truth/God); but he found many friends and companions along his journey that warmed him irregardless. Izumi attempted human transmutation on her stillborn son (to the same horrifying result) and for her troubles lost her reproductive organs to Truth/God; but she became a surrogate mother to her apprentices the Elric brothers. Mustang both figuratively (and later literally) lost his sight; but in both instances Riza helped him overcome his blindness. Scar was a vengeful murderer who hated and was trapped by the use of alchemy; but he embraced his deceased's brother's alchemy research to help the country that destroyed his and was redeemed in the process. Edward lost his arm and leg to human transmutation; but both literally and figuratively he found someone he could lean on in the form of Winry, his automechanic and later wife. Therefore, to add to the earlier point, alchemy has limits and cannot fix everything, BUT BEING HUMAN CAN MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE. What does all of this have to do with Nina's condition? When you find yourself in a hole, you don't say "I know! I'll DIG my way out". Same thing applies to Nina's condition; you have no idea how much more terrible Nina's situation could be when human transmutation is performed again. A horrible thing happened to her, yes, but that does not mean she should be defined by it, nor should she be denied companionship as a result. Or, in other words, you pull yourself out of the hole, and if the hole is too deep to pull yourself out of, have others help you out of the hole.

I agree... I was devastated... I wasn't even angry... Just so fking sad snot and tears flowing like a fking tsunami... That kid was happy!! So happy and well adjusted... Raised well by that thing... Just why🤧😭😭...
Yeah even the ending of it was sadder. I mean, that ending scene where hohenheim and a few scientists were trying to practice 'magic' in that other world. And then Ed trying to build a rocket so that he could travel outer space to get back to his real world.. Just exactly defines humanity as a hopelessly hopeful species.. 'To infinity and beyond' vibe right there for sure. 😭😭
What’s the worst thing about this to me is that Nina’s innocence shines through. Despite having something this horrific done to her, she still shows some sort of worry for the man that did such an awful thing to her. She doesn’t realize the gravity of the situation and it’s heartbreaking. I really do think the most evil thing one could ever do is commit appalling acts on a child. They are too good for this world and need to be nurtured and protected. Violating that shows me that you don’t have a soul.
Too right. Children are the most precious things we have. There are few things more despicable than betraying the trust and innocence of a child, and manipulating and [ab]using that child as a means to an end...
It's slightly worse than you might realize, because many dogs have unconditional love; so it's both of their love for their father in one body that refuses to yield. So while everyone might feel that the beating is deserved, neither Nina nor Alexander would never accept it.
This scene really had me thinking, like deeply. I think because you can see on Ed’s face that part of him knows that tucker is partly right, in the fact that a lot of scientists experiment on lives, animal and human. Although their situations are different because for the Elric brothers it was more of an agreed self-sacrifice than the selfish use of other people.
Yeah he hates that part of him agrees. He hates that 1 sacrifice could benefit countless others and that it had to be Nina because losing nameless people is easier to overlook.
Not really. They thought equivilant exchange was the ingredients they put in the transmutation circle, not Al's body and Ed's limbs. Where it differs is they were trying desperstely to bring someone back from the dead. Shou snuffed out his daughter's life in hopes of recognition/payout
@Nick Kiggers Yeah, at the end of the day only they were involved in their experiment. So no one really has the right to condemn them especially since they already paid the price for what they tried to do.
I read the full manga in middle school and this part has made me cry and I refused to finish reading the book for a few days. It traumatized me so bad I began to write fiction horror about illegal and unethical human experimentation that also used animals. I’m only remembering this now that I’ve seen the scene again.

Remember watching this as a kid for the first time and it was the first real " there aren't always happy endings" story I ever saw/heard. Broke my heart.
This was such a chilling, sad scene - even more so as Ed eventually figures out what Tucker really did. He went from "wow, that actually worked" to "hold on" to "YOU BASTARD!!!". Poor guys actually spent so much time with that girl just so it could be irreversibly destroyed by that monster of a man. Every child deserves a parent, not every parent deserves a child.
What made this even more depressing is that *he didn't even have to make Nina and Alexander into a chimera*. There were already soldiers who could change into their human and animal forms at will already. It was Shou's hunger for fame and ambition that led him to do this.
0:30 it literally took 1 sec for Edward to figure out the entire thing. That's why he is Full Metal. He is basically Einstein of the alchemy world. Once in a generation genius.
Nah when you read the manga and you actually see how adorable she is and how sweet and innocent it’s like 10x worse. And then the fact that she was wondering if her dad was okay 🥺🥺🥺🥺

Brutality of Bad Parents...indeed tragic yet powerful scene to haunt us forever!
This show truly depicted the difference between the traditional meaning magic and alchemy. Also this scene set the tone for the whole show .
It still gives me goosebumps 😭😭
This scene traumatized when I saw it for the first time. I'll never forget it.
There was no point in making me go through this pain again, TF Netflix?!
This scene right here not only traumatised me but made me cry like a baby back then. Now I'm traumatized again.😭
What made this even more depressing is that *he didn't even have to make Nina and Alexander into a chimera*. There were already soldiers who could change into their human and animal forms at will already. It was Shou's hunger for fame and ambition that led him to do this.
Yeah... Like the one who lifts his leg to pee. ...yes they made that joke
This scene made my stomach turn…. Ive never once in my life experienced this from a show.
I felt very bad at this episode and almost cried when scar killed nina.😭
0:30 it literally took 1 sec for Edward to figure out the entire thing. That's why he is Full Metal. He is basically Einstein of the alchemy world. Once in a generation genius.
Nah when you read the manga and you actually see how adorable she is and how sweet and innocent it’s like 10x worse. And then the fact that she was wondering if her dad was okay 🥺🥺🥺🥺
My heart went full metal after watching this.
FMAB is just a Masterpiece!! Whosoever still dint watch it, please you should watch it as soon as possible!!❤️
The last time I ve seen this scene,10 years ago, I felt betrayed, sad and I cried.. I promised I will never see it again, and here I am again watching it after 10 years, still the same feeling, heartbroken... The poor Nina & Alexander 💔 💔
One of the most complex and well written stories with best ending. At first you think wth is happening but as the story unfolds and the climax takes place ❤️ It's a masterpiece. Every character has it's significance rather than highlighting one character to make him famous.
Full metal alchemist always gonna be masterpiece ❣️❣️💯
This is so freaking heartbreaking every time.
I start watching fmab today and i watched this scene and Netflix is giving me chills again
0:55 he's voice kinda similar to naruto
It's actually Hange Zoe
“What do you mean 'lower myself'? That's the only thing I've ever been. Just a simple human who couldn't save a little girl. Not even with alchemy.”
This is the scene in this story (whatever version you're watching) that lets you know EXACTLY what kind of tone you're going to be in for.
The fact this really happening in our world just amplifies this episode
Honestly I wouldn't even say this was the saddest scene
Romi park is amazing, i love her voice acting 😍😍
When you get to know that this and Aot are better than all the shows of netflix combined 😂😂
Lol you kids never understand the depth of FMAB 😂😂😂 AoT is one of the bests though.
@@Abhishek-ql3qu
So what he say😂
@@surajpingle7670 he said AoT is better than all the the shows of Netflix that's not at all true.Aot is not the best show it is one of the bests but not on top
@@Abhishek-ql3qu read message correctly bro
He say ‘ this and aot are better then all the shows,
@@surajpingle7670 my bad I apologize
Dr:We are the same you and me!
Yeah, Edward and Alphonse trying to bring back their mother because they have no one is as equal as turning cold bloodedly wife and daughter to chimera.
If you want to describe 2020 with an episode. This is it 🌚
the unsettling background music, the cold narration of the scientist, the weak belows of ed..ward.. all building up to the tension of those two dreaded words "big brother".
And when confronted with the fact ed himself has done human experimentation you see him fighting so hard to distance himself from the truth. The truth that he did try and fiddle with someones life and he made others pay for his actions. Ed knows his motives are different, but he can't cope with the reality that what he did was wrong and is wanting so hard for what he(edward) is saying to be true.
100000/10 a true masterpiece
This still gives me goosebumps
the way she says “let’s play let’s play.” is heartbreaking
I firstly saw this scene when I was 12 and my tears fall, like today...
One of the few animes where the English translation is just as emotional and impactful.
I watch this when i was 13 and i dont have any idea how deeply sad and traumatic this scene is 😭 now im 27, it makes me cry 😭
3 years later after seeing this in the original, brotherhood and the live action movie this moment still hurts
This scene gives me chills everytime I see it
Damn you for kicking up such a devastating PTSD...
Still get chills watching this scene
Damn even without context can still make you cry huh
I remember the first time I saw this, it broke my heart in a bad way.
"flip the pickle over, Edward. Trust me, the payoff is huge."
Everybody who watched this scene for the first time:
*I’m never going to emotionally recover from this*
Never once seen this, or have any background knowledge of what the rest of the show is, but I almost teared up at this scene alone
i really LOVE fma’s background music
Rest in peace little girl and dog the dad how could he do that to his daughter like she was so sweet and cute I can't believe I just watched this at first I didn't realize but when she says a big brother it's actually really sad😢😢😢😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😢😭😢😭😢😢😢🫸🫷
What scares me the most is science is moving toward this quicker than ever.
When I was younger I really didn't care or feel anything when I watched this, but now I have kids, it hits differently.
Romi Park (Ed) was amazing in this moment
2:48 Let's play... Let's play the replay 😭😭😭
It was heart breaking to watch second time more when I finally realised it but it still hurts today
More than crying honestly it gave me chills like seriously was too afraid to even sleep so i don't get weird dreams i was 14 back then😣
This is far more traumatizing in fma 03, actually this scene is where I realised fma isn't gonna be kidding around.
Fma isnt that much traumatizing if u look at it , it's much happier than most shonen animes
@@swayamprakashpani10froll-48 true. Things get easier ahead and the ending is satisfying too
This scene hurts so much, not only emotionally but also physically...
What makes this worse in hindsight is that there’s already a successful way to make superior Chimeras. Tucker has rightfully fallen into the depths of hell
this scene broke me years ago, i still am not able to rewatch this series
Teacher:What does the dog say?
Students: Woof Woof
Teacher:What does the cow say?
Students:Mooo Mooo
Teacher:What does the dog say?
Students: Ed...ward. Ed...ward
Huh, TUCKER.
Bro, that scene where Ed is just smiling, and then all of a sudden, he realizes who it actually was 😢
This one and Ed's sacrifice are the 2 most hard hitting moments.
Ngl, it was when Al's eyes fade when apologizing to Nina because he's unable to cry where I almost cried myself
This makes me cry every time, it's sadder than Rem
from all my years of watching psychological thrillers serial killer documentaries this is what got to me really messed with my head when I saw it as a child
So as it said ''Big Brother '' my mind was Edward.0:31
After what he's done, Nina still called him Dad. And asking if he's hurt.
That just broke me.
