These conservative Islamic ideas are shared across Islamic cultures, and there is a barrier to criticizing them because of the idea that innovation is prohibited in Islam (bid'ah بدعة). And I do not mean harmless ideas, but actively harmful ideas, like caning people in public or discriminating against LGBT people (like in Aceh, Indonesia). Even if progressive Muslims reinterpret the Qur'an and Sunnah to avoid these cruel and bizarre situations, the conservative Muslims are still a large force, and a majority in rural areas.

I'm leaning more on the latter. If you look at it, the % of people in congress vs the overall representation of race/culture across the U.S. is out of balance. White is what 67% of the population? (a lot of people will hold this to immigration, and in a sense that's true, but not to the extent that people believe it to be.) That shouldn't account for 90+% of congress. I do however think it'll take a generation or two for that to differentiate fully. We'll see. As for religion and such, their in general, should be a separation of church and state (which currently doesn't exist). Don't forget that Christianity has done more genocide and massacre's in it's lifetime than any other religion in history.
