@@MachoNachoProductions Yes I found it easy to follow and was very well done can't wait to see a follow up someday with rechargeable batteries in the GBA versus a fresh battery in the SP
A far better way to establish a scientific "control" would be to test the exact same console before and after screen replacement. That way there is literally only one variable.
The battery life of the GBA SP could vary wildly depending on the battery. I'm not _too_ surprised about the SP results because a LOT of the aftermarket batteries are garbage, but the AGB results blew me away! Really impressive. Although of course that depends on the quality of the batteries as well.
I personally made a AGS battery mod (USB C port included) onto the AGB, sadly I think the battery I purchased was a poor quality one since it only lasts 25-30 minutes in default birghtness
And if you use the EZ-Flash Omega instead of original carts, you can expect the battery life to be nearly half of the results shown here, those things drain the power a lot more than the official Everdrives or carts do
I’m glad you posted this I just upgraded my gba sp with an ips screen and that together with the ez flash pulls too much power from the stock 650mah battery I must get a better battery
I'm always getting the red "low bat" light on my recently backlit AGB. the annoying part is that I don't even know how much is left. The current set up is AGB-001 + IPS V2, Using an EZ Flash Omega. I have a couple of fairly old 2000mAh NiMH and last time I was able to get around 10 hours of Pokemon Playing on default brightness, no headphones. I've noticed that playing with large cans headphones also leads to shorter batt life. Even volume settings pose a significant difference.
Very true! There are so many variables to consider. No case is the same. 10 hours of pretty good. How high is your volume set to? Wondering how much of a toll it takes on the battery. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions for me even at 0 volume , an hour into gameplay at half brightness i got the red light. however i did not used the li ion batteries from duracell or ikea. i used standard dura batts
Haha, yeah I also usually play with the volume up too so in that sense the test wasn't too realistic but I think I would go mad if I listened to the opening of Metroud for 11 hours straight, haha! Volume certainly does have some affect on battery life. Cheers dude!
Interesting to see just how much the AGB battery life is affected by the brightness setting. I reckon with Ni-MH batteries or a Li-ion kit you'd see less of a gap - Alkaline batteries do not perform well at high current draw as is the case with full brightness.
Thanks for the info Nitrax! I didn't know that alkaline batteries did not react well to high current draw. Would be interesting to test some NiMH batteries! Thanks again! Cheers!
Thanks for the test, this is helpful. I knew it since my first own IPS mod that this screen is power hunger. For GBA IPS mod I think GBA is best choice compare to SP. Because AA bettery capacity is higher, easy to replace and better quality (for top brand) Cheer ! from Bangkok.
You’re welcome Sirichai! I’m glad the video was helpful! I agree, quality AA batteries are easier to come by than aftermarket SP batteries! Welcome to the channel, I hope you enjoy the rest of my videos! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions I'm pretty young (20) and I can hear a really really high pitched noise while listening to your video. Its pretty irritating. Older people might not be able to hear this tone.
Hey two! Thank you for reaching out. I was notified of this issue and I think I solved it. Can you please check a newer video and see if it’s fixed for you! I’ve been adding a low pass filter to my audio in my newer videos which I think fixed it. Please let me know. Thanks!
I modded an advance with the AGS-101 screed with the digital brightness controller and audio amplifier from Retro Modding. I also put in a 2000mah battery from Modmatic. I get over 20 hours of battery life on a single charge of actual play time.
Whoa, that's amazing battery life! I need to check out the modmatic battery! Also, I think the AGS 101 LCD is more power efficient than the IPS kits. Thanks for the info, Frank! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions the modmatic went out of production last year. There might still be some left, but it's very similar to the retro modding battery. And yeah, the ags 101 is much more efficient. That's mainly the reason I went with it. Plus the nostalgia feeling.
You should look into putting a DSi battery into your GBA SP. I got my SP coming in the mail and would love a video instead of just the picture/text tutorial I found. Good work man.
Would love to see this with one of those drop in Type C batteries. I have the CleanJuice one but haven’t had the time to really put it through it’s paces yet.
Dropping in to say I use Rayovac brand SP batteries. Runs at 880 Mah and I get around 5 hours on max brightness on my ips v2 SP mod. Default setting I'll get close to 6.5 hours. I cannot recommend this battery enough as it absolutely blows the generic ones out of the water.
Thank you for the input Bret! I think I remember Makho made a video with that battery. I will certainly look at potentially getting one of those! Cheers dude!
I use the ostent brand(aliexpress stuff) OG NDS battery for my GBA SP ips v2 mof. I did the test and the results are 2.5 hours - max brightness 3.5 hours - default brightness Note = didnt use flashcart I wish to try makho battery mod, it seems to be the best so far (correct me if im wrong) Why dont u try it? :)
Makho made a few videos going over Gameboy Advance SP after market batteries. Some of them claimed 850mAh but really only had around 80mAh. There's too much variance in the after market options.
Great vid. I'm actually planning on doing 2 mods of the ips v2 screens on my gba glacier and magenta consoles. After seeing your vids it seems well worth it.
Whish i had the monetary conditions to buy these kits looks sick, either way thanks for showing the community all the specs of the market products keep the good work!
There's no consistency with aftermarket gba sp batteries. I've seen another UA-cam Mahko do testing on a whole load of them and they can range from being very close to the stated capacity, or having as low as like 100 mAh on a battery that says it's 850 mAh. Even with the max 850 mAh, the capacity of a lithium ion battery is still a lot less than that of 2 AAs which usually rate 1700 to 2200 mAh per rechargeable AA battery. I'd say the power consumption is about the same on both funnyplaying panels, but the gba sp suffers from a smaller, more inconsistent battery.
So true! I wish there were some good quality aftermarket batteries. The Rayovac I think is supposed to be pretty decent, but for the most part, its hit or miss. Thank you for the insight on the IPS panels, I wasnt too sure if they differed on battery life. Have you found any good brands of batteries? Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions I've always survived on the old OEM batteries for the gba sps I have, but I heard other modders have good experiences with a 603048 LiPo battery (you can get them from cheap at aliexpress) and the battery board made by the aforementioned Mahko here (oshpark.com/shared_projects/gaB93JkC). More often than not, these 603048 LiPo batteries (rated to 900 mAh) have closer to the stated capacity than most aftermarket gba sp batteries, so this is a better choice overall I'd say. Otherwise for aftermarket batteries, I haven't seen a brand that is consistent. You could get the stated capacity, 10% of the capacity or anything in between.
I do remember seeing Makhos video about his battery board, such a cool idea! I need to look more closely into that and see if I can buy a few. Good thing theyre reusable also, just solder on a new battery! Thanks for all the tips and input NHL VAN! Cheers!
Thanks for this video. I'm waiting for a GBA used that I bought, and an IPS screen so I can mod it. But I always asked myself if, with an IPS screen, the battery would nos last long for me. With your results, it's more than I need to play games. Thanks!
The SP's battery life makes sense since the battery only holds 850mAh of charge. Quite similar to the Gameboy Pocket where the weak AAA batteries only give it a charge of 1-3 hours.
With my laminated IPS V3 at full brightness, the red light got on after 3h, it still isnt dead yet but we will see how much more it will take. Ive also noticed that on full brightness, the batteries seem to get warm once they are low we are talking about alkaline batteries though
There is a battery for the SP on Amazon that's 1600mAh compatible with the AGS-001 and SAM-003. Do you think that would be a worth upgrade for the SP at all? or is it better to be with the 850mAh and 900mAh ones?
Loved the video! Super useful information :) do you think after your thicc GBA SP is complete you would do a battery test with all the modern additions? It would be very interesting to see how long the ultimate gameboy with an IPS screen, Bluetooth, and flash cart, would last if you also had it buffed out with the bigger battery and power cleaners.
I’m more curious to see how an AGS works with a brand new 850mAh battery from the Mahko kit. Most reproduction AGS batteries barely hold half what they say. And old ones are well old.
Great video, super concerned about my new SP modded with the V2 IPS screen as it clocks in at about an hour or so playtime.. I didn’t solder the brightness wire though as It nearly burnt through the ribbon connector, so it could be displaying at full brightness. Bit annoying though as I feel like I’ve just wasted my money :(
hello, how long did it last before, have you tried with the minimum brightness? What they recommend is to put a 900 mah battery with an adapter that fits and the duration increases although I do not know how many hours. Greetings
take the GBASP with an un modded screen, time it from full charge to dead, figure out the percentage difference between that and what Nintendo suggests. run the test again with the alternate screen, adjust the percentage accordingly.
i have an ips scren on my sp, and battery life is pretty bad. only about an hour play time before the red light comes on with flash cart, maybe an hour & a half with legit cart. same story accross multiple batters from multiple sources, so its not just a bad battery. very frustrating. It's getting to the point that I'm considering going back to the ags-001 screen.
I installed the Funnyplaying GBA IPS LCD V2 kit without brightness control - do you know what brightness it defaults to? I run games from an EZ Flash Omega Definitive Edition, and the battery indicator is turning red after 1-2 hours with fresh batteries.
My SP, with the IPS v2 and a new aftermarket 850mah battery also clocks in right around that 3-3.5 hrs running the Metroid loop off an EZ Flash Omega flash cart.
Nice video! Are you using an EZ Flash Omega card? I'm curious how much of a difference it might make on battery life running the game from the SD card or from NAND
Thanks Dru! In the video I used an official Nintendo copy of Metroid, no EZ Flash Omega. I would imagine the battery life would be a little less if I used the flash cart. That would be a good comparison to check out. I may have to make a video about that! Cheers bud!
@@MachoNachoProductions There was an interesting post from the guys at Everdrive about different cards affecting battery life (I believe as Everdrive were boasting that their power consumption is only a fraction of what others, such as EZdrive, require). I believe they were referring to the V5 Mini Everdrive. P.S the production quality in these videos do not go unnoticed, it's insane! :) Keep it up.
@@MachoNachoProductions Hey haha. I've seen similar videos use a rechargeable battery for the original Gameboy Advance. I was hoping to see another comparison with some sort of rechargeable battery (usb) for the advance. Funny thing is, after I was done watching this video, I was recommend your newest video with an GB Advance w/ a rechargeable battery. Great video! Although, I was hoping to see the comparison with Max Brightness w/o the evercart. Great video nonetheless. Very informative
Is it true that rechargeable batteries (ie. Eneloops) can damage and/or cause the console to play improperly? I'm looking to stop using disposable batteries but I've heard they are lower voltage and therefore can hinder the consoles performance.
An AGS001 with a nintendo DS battery lasts an obscenely long time. My tests showed 16 hours. And that's with the light ON, not off. Stock screen. So the only modification is the DS battery. I took it out of a random fat DS that I got from the japanese yahoo auctions. No history on the battery at all. The SP also came from the same auction... but the original battery was puffed. So that's why I pilfered the DS battery.
Nice and very helpful video! Would you possibly be able to do a review of the new gameboy pocket full size retro pixel funnyplaying IPS and also battery test it? Keep it up! Great content!
Hello. Nice and informative video. Just a quick question (a little off-topic). I made this mod with funnyplaying and it works well, but somewhere around 1/20 if the times I turn it on, there is no picture in the screen, but the backlight is on and the sound too (which means the console is working). When I turn it off and on again it works perfectly. My soldering and assembly are flawless, everything is well isolated. Any answer will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)
I think that it is completely normal, I have had that happen to me a several times with several different kits including this one. I think that because these kits have different power draws than the original hardware sometimes those spikes cause the console to not boot correctly. I dont think it's anything to worry about. I hope this helps. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions Thank you very much. It makes sense and yes, probably nothing to worry about and totally worth the upgrade. Keep up the good work. Cheers mate! :)
You probably fixed it by now but for others reading this: i had the same problem. Use TP3. It work as usual except you press the start button and not the select button. And use Flux or else you will break that contact!
HI there, great videos! as far as I know Funnyplaying IPS has a 10 level brightness if you solder the wires do you know which is the default brightness if I skip to solder the 3 wires to the board? Has same/more/less brightness compare to the AGS-101 screen (GBA SP) when default “NORMAL” bright is set?
That’s a great question! I don’t the know the answer off hand, but if I had to guess I think it’ll be around level 5. To me it seems to be brighter than the AGS 101 at default brightness. I’m hoping someone who is more knowledgeable can help answer this question. I’m glad you are enjoying the channel! Wish I could have been more help. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions Yes, the v2 mod kit for Neo Geo Pocket Color. It is the same branded one that you installed here (GBA kit) for battery life testing. Thanks! Love your videos and engagement with the audience!
My AGS with a funny plays IPS screen with handheld Legends 850 mAh battery gets me 9:30 of running time on default brightness on the title screen of Mario and Luigi Superstar saga real cartridge.
I will look into it for sure! Right now my IPS GBC uses a li-ion battery. Would you modify the battery to use a li-ion or regular AA? Just want to find out what kind of mods people are doing. Cheers bud!
Macho Nacho Productions I just wanted to say thanks for always responding to my comments. I also wanted to clarify that he talks about GBA AGS batteries with a rant video.
Thank you so much for this video, I got around to modding my gameboy advance with the ips screen and I had this exact question. I'll definitely be checking out your channel, you just made all of the answers organized and to the point
I tested earlier today. My ips GBA SP using an x5 mini everdrive (uses more power than a standard cart) with default brightness and 20% volume lasted 7h10m. I tested this with the Super Mario Advanced 2: Super Mario World’s story/gameplay demo loop from the main menu I’m using an 850 mAh Phat DS battery from Cameron Sino. It was purchased a few days ago and has only gone through one charge cycle. It’s a shame you can’t get new OEM batteries from Nintendo anymore.
Thank you for the info Aaron! Good stuff! I’ve been looking into using the DS battery. Did you have to mod the console in any way of did it fit okay? Cheers bud!
@@MachoNachoProductions for the Phat DS battery you just have to clip off the two plastic posts and it fits right in. Takes about 2 seconds and can be done with side cutters or even fingernail clippers. Just make sure it's the original DS battery and not the DS Lite. If it's aftermarket battery you may need to peel the label off to get the battery cover flush - depends on how thick the label they use is.
Macho, just to add something to your data, I have done the exact same tests when determining if battery life in GBA SP's were good enough before selling. Believe it or not I used the same game as well! Anything under 3 hours at default brightness I would discard and replace the battery. Variance between old official batteries would be anywhere between 1.5 - 5 hours. I tested about 10 units in total. I have an aftermarket battery in my personal SP, it's made by a company called KMD. It was advised to me (can't remember where) as one of the best quality aftermarket batteries. It lasted over 6 hours in my test. In my mark 1 GBA the battery time varies wildly depending on what type of batteries you use. Of course you can get 11 hours from premium Duracells but use generic panasonic or varta and you are looking at 4-5 hours tops. I have an EZ flash omega and that thing is great although heavy on battery life. It will drain the battery nearly twice as fast as a standard cartridge. The Krikzz models are a lot more forgiving but still drain a little faster than a standard game cartridge. Hope this helps somebody.
Nick, thank you for all the data! Super helpful! I’ll have to check out that brand of battery for the SP. I’ll def be referring back to this comment when I do a follow up video. Haha, awesome that you also used Metroid to test batteries, such a good game!! Cheers buddy!!
@@allancolic6291 For me it's about 3.5 - 4 hours off the top of my head. I have a AGS 101 screen in my SP at the moment so I can't run the test for you. But it's decent, I know that much.
@@allancolic6291 I don't know if it has the best battery life out of all the aftermarket batteries but it's definitely good. Don't pay too much attention to the mAh ratings as the green Chinese ones you see everywhere claim 850 mAh but in reality are more like 400-450. There is a video somewhere here on UA-cam showing this. The KMD ones as far as I can tell are made in China but they are an American brand.
My AGB has an IPS and amp mod. Playing with the inefficient EZ Flash Omega, I probably get about 4-6 hours with eneloop double a. I haven't done an actual test, just a guess from how quickly my batteries show red.
@@MachoNachoProductions After watching the battery tests of the different flash carts I'd say so too. I've also got a cleanjuice battery pack on the way. The amp I'm using is the PAM8302A. The whole build was frustrating but worth it, I'm extremely happy with it.
@@MachoNachoProductions hello i love your videos on how comparsion of battery life on gba sp and gba too!! i have a question i had a thought about for while. would u mind try testing how long ips or ags 101 affecting battery draining without using flashcart?? i have problem with my gba that has probably ags 101 while playing standard original game cart. led went to red abt 30 minutes. sorry for my bad english grammar.
Hey I made it into the video! Still patiently waiting for the video on Macro battery life. No pressure lol. As for IPS GBAs I haven't done extensive testing or anything but I believe my non-Pro Eneloops get around 8 hours on default brightness and probably about half volume. I have some Tenergy Premium 2500 mAh batteries that I haven't accurately tested yet. I fell asleep while they died so I have to redo it again since I don't use a timer and a camera lol. Someone mentioned IKEA LADDAs and I've been wanting to get some myself. I just don't have one nearby and their website never seems to let me complete an order. I've heard they are the same battery as the Eneloop Pro. The Pros have a higher capacity but a lower lifespan. I think like 500 recharges on the Pro and 2000 recharges on the non-Pros? Just going off memory so I might be off on those numbers. My IPS GBA SP gets around 12-13 hours iirc. But I have an unusual setup to get that battery life. I used Makho's 900 mAh battery mod but I also added 2 more thin batteries behind the screen for a total of 1780 mAh. All these tests were done by running the Pokemon Emerald demo on repeat. Most of the time I would be nearby when they died or at least checked them within 15 mins or so of them dying. So not the most accurate procedure but it was close enough for my curiosity.
Dude thank you for all the info! I’m going to have to index this comment so I can reference it in the future. Haha, def still planning to do a Macro battery life video. I’m think of doing a follow up to this while including the Macro in it. Thanks again! Cheers!
How did you wire them? Did you just solder the two additional batteries wires to the same makho battery pcb traces so the batteries were affectively wired in parallel? Also, how in the world do you fit more stuff behind screen?
@@TheDailyTeacherTuey The IPS screens are thinner than the OEM screens so that gives the extra room for the batteries. As for wiring them up I soldered the two together in parallel. Then routed the wires through the ribbon cable slot and soldered those to the positive and negative posts of the battery terminals on the motherboard.
@@joshl.554 ahh one more question, what is the height of the batteries you bought? I figure they are 3mm or less since I saw another video in which they posted battery Lipo cell names, I just want to be sure before I go and purchase some.
Have not done a timed test but, I'd say with this IPS kit in my AGB I'm getting 8-10 hours. This is with the clean juice rechargeable battery 1700mah. It also probably doesn't help that I'm using an EZ Flash Omega cart and never writing the game to NOR so it is always accessing the SD card. Would love to see some Sega Game Gear mod if you're taking requests.
Thank you Guy for the input! The EZ Flash is a bit power hungry for sure. I may need to do some testing with it too in the future! I definitely plan on doing some Game Gear mods! I absolutely love the Game Gear, it was my first console! I just wish there were more mods readily available. The McWill kit is a bit expensive and I'm waiting for BennVenn or FunnyPlaying to come in with an awesome kit! Do you know of any cool Game Gear mods on the horizon?
@@MachoNachoProductions On the horizon no, but Ive seen a Game Gear screen on handheldlegend and retromodding. I believe it's the same kit but RM is less expensive and marked down to 99 at the moment.
Hello my friend, I’m confused >< I have a IPS V2 LCD brand HISPEEDIDO bought in Aliexpress and AA Duracell 2500 mha batteries but the battery life is around 1 hr :( The red light appears in an instant and that stress me 😭 Is there is any solution/ tip to extent the battery’s life?
That’s interesting. Sometimes this can be solved by cleaning the power switch. Try using some isopropyl alcohol to clean the switch. There are some UA-cam videos that show how to do this. I hope this helps you. Best of luck buddy! Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions wow! Thx dude! I do not have idea about that possible problem! I’ll try that ‘cause my gba is old and I had to clean some corrosion and stuff like that in the motherboard time ago.Thank you and greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
This test basically shows up how small the battery is in the SP anyway. I’ve got rechargeable Lithium Ion AA Duracell’s in my GBA that hold 2500mah each. Battery life is incredible, I still have instant recharge but I can recharge them so I’m not throwing anything out when they run out of power. No Alkaline acid problems either...
Yeah I wish, there would be an IPS Mod for the GBA with a laminated Display like on the GBA SP... The Space between the frontscreen and the actual Displays bothers me somehow...
I think some people would like to have more time in between charges. But you are right, you can always recharge the battery of the SP. Thanks for the comment! Cheers!
Just chiming in to share my own results. I have a GBA SP AGS-101 with a new unbranded 850mAh battery that came from china. I left the GBA running a demo screen from the EZ Flash IV at max brightness, and I got just a hair over 7 hours of battery life out of it
Thanks for the input! Really appreciate it! That's a way better time I got! Any chance you have the brand of battery? Seems to be higher quality than mine. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions My pleasure! The battery its self was generic with no branding. Honestly over 10 hours on a GBA with double AA's is not too bad. I have rechargeable ones and i get about the same from it. Its pretty decent considering you can play that long on one charge
Really?! That's so awesome! I didn't know that would fit! Do you need to modify the GBA shell or the DSi battery in any way? Thanks for the info! Cheers!
Gameboy Advance AGS with Retro Modding IPS display, KMD 3.7V 600 mAh battery. Default brightness and max volume. 3 hours and 29 minutes. I do have to add that I have the EZ Flash Omega flash cart inserted and only played Pokémon Emerald that entire time. I might purchase the 850 mAh battery off of Amazon and report if there is a substantial difference in battery life
Sounds good Damian! Thank you for the info. Battery life is always a tricky subject with a lot of variables that can be hard to quantify. Thanks again great and happy New Years!
@@MachoNachoProductions Honestly, the IPS screen is bright enough that most people would be satisfied by minimum brightness indoors and default when playing outside. Minimum brightness with max volume I timed at having 4 hours and 3 minutes of battery life before a forced shut off. That's approximately a 15% increase in battery life, and if the 850 mAh aftermarket batteries on Amazon are true to their specifications. That would be an additional 40% increase in battery life. In the same environment with a new larger battery, you should get little under 5.5 hours of battery life at default, and 6.2 hours at minimum. Anyway, Happy Holidays and have a peaceful New Years!
U shoulda added the flashcart and see If it further impacted the battery. EZ flash allot of people would be using 3 hours is good still I think for the SP but wow 11 for the landscape that's shocking.
Yep I'm going to be doing more battery test in the future with flash carts since a lot of people seem to be interested in that! Thank you for the comment! Cheers
Hey. I have 2 gba 001 with ips v2 screens. When u use an ez flash omega the cart draws twice the power of a legit game cart and tanks the battery. If u use an ips with omega the USB C battery mod is a must. I use the retro six mod ad I am in the UK and its excellent. I wanted to continue with disposable batteries but it's to impractical in those conditions. I would get 4 to 5 hours on batteries and with the mod a lot lot longer. I have not run a test tho I'm afraid. And agree the max brightness is way over the top. I tend to use level 3 of the 10 settings. Which is the default on mine. The ez flash is awesome but does kill batteries. There is a very good vid one u tube testing it.
Awesome Dom! Thank you for all the insight! I am planning to do a usb c battery mod from retro modding on my ips V2 agb and run a test to see how long of battery life i can get! I’m hoping it’s a lot more! Do they still make the retro six battery? Again, thanks for all the info! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions I believe retro six have a colaberation with them yes so probably the same or similar. Very easy mod to do but u have to snip a few bits of plastic out to fit it in. Can't coment on 2800 rechargeable and they sound like an awesome and much cheaper option. I do like the USB C tho won't be as handy when camping :) byw love your content. Keep it up :)
Unfortunately, I think the big issue for the SP is that a lot of the aftermarket options for batteries is not that great. Quality AA batteries are more readily available and easier to find making the AGB more flexible. Cheers!
Well 2 reasons. 1 batterys just die after so many charges. Youcant expect a battery to last 20 years. 2 the aftermarked ones are just trash. Ive seen another youtube video that tested aftermarked ones and it said 850mah but it was 288mah. You can use Nintendo DS phat battery's, theyre a bit better. Or go for better quality aftermarked ones. Or just buy a good powerbank with an USB charger. I love USB chargers! (=
That's a great way to add more life! Never thought abut using powerbanks. I need to look into those USB chargers, could be a game changer! Thanks for the info! Cheers!
Hmm, I wonder if the sound mod is draining more power. For my tests, I had the sound off. Have you tried playing with the sound off to see if it lasts longer? It'd be interesting to see what the results would be with sound on for my tests. Cheers!
Haha yeah, I just run my tests with out sound cause I live in a small apartment. I think I would go mad after a few hours of listening to the opening to Pokémon blue lol.

@@MachoNachoProductions That is only true for the regular GBA. I was more interested in the SPs performance. WIthout knowing the battery life of a normal screen as well with your particular battery, it's not possible to draw a correlation to the documented battery life, thus I don't know how much of a difference the SP screen makes. And you mentioned yourself that you currently don't have another regular SP on hand. I am guessing the GBA and SP screens are different models, because of form factor?
That’s a great question! I’m not 100% sure, but I believe that the IPS panel for both are the same. The only difference between the kits are the ribbon cables.
Macho Nacho Productions thank you but the search continues. I’m so mad at myself. First I soldered to the wrong point. All I had to do was move the brightness wire I didn’t realize how close to the board I was and I removed two of the smallest capacitors on the board. I was holding the caps which were stuck together with some tweezers and ping they flew off into the carpet. 😭😭😭😭
The capacitors should be labeled in the pcb as Cxx. Try and find the schematic for the GBASP and find the values of those capacitors then buy them from either mouser or Digi-Key. I hope that helps a little.

Awesome! So glad I could help! How did you find the format of the video? Was it easy to follow? Always trying to improve my videos! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Yes I found it easy to follow and was very well done can't wait to see a follow up someday with rechargeable batteries in the GBA versus a fresh battery in the SP
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback Matt! I will look into a follow up with some good Rechargeable batteries! Cheers dude!
@@MachoNachoProductions Yes please do I'd love to know how long the GBA lasts with rechargeable AA batteries
I got like 5hrs to 7 advande sp
A far better way to establish a scientific "control" would be to test the exact same console before and after screen replacement. That way there is literally only one variable.
About time we got a video about battery life on these IPS kits. Thank you!
You’re welcome dude! So glad you found if helpful! Cheers dude!
@@carlosantoniolealmarroquin3918 i have the same issue right now. Definitely need to upgrade
Very useful video Tito!
Thank you Pablo! Glad the video was helpful! Cheers!
And if you use the EZ-Flash Omega instead of original carts, you can expect the battery life to be nearly half of the results shown here, those things drain the power a lot more than the official Everdrives or carts do
They sure do. I ran a test on a later video with the flash cart and ended up getting about 4 hours less.
What about Kirkkz everdrive? Does that drain power ?
I’m glad you posted this I just upgraded my gba sp with an ips screen and that together with the ez flash pulls too much power from the stock 650mah battery I must get a better battery
@@MachoNachoProductions Where is this video? I cant find it
@@steveothehulk Yes. I have the Everdrive GBA mini (same as the GBA x5) and it drains power faster than a standard game cart.
Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions oh man I didn't even consider the volume affecting my battery life I always play on full volume
@@MachoNachoProductions for me even at 0 volume , an hour into gameplay at half brightness i got the red light. however i did not used the li ion batteries from duracell or ikea. i used standard dura batts
EZ flash takes a lot of battery life
Haha, yeah I also usually play with the volume up too so in that sense the test wasn't too realistic but I think I would go mad if I listened to the opening of Metroud for 11 hours straight, haha!
Cheers!
Just came across your channel. Loving the content, GBA forever. Thank you for doing what you do!
Thank you Nick! So glad you came across my channel! GBA for life for sure! Cheers buddy!
Thanks for the test, this is helpful. I knew it since my first own IPS mod that this screen is power hunger. For GBA IPS mod I think GBA is best choice compare to SP. Because AA bettery capacity is higher, easy to replace and better quality (for top brand)

Great video man! I've been thinking about going with the original GBA and the IPS V2 mod so 11 hours on default brightness is freaking impressive!

Yes that’s a great combo! GBA IPs kit is stellar and battery life is very reasonable! Cheers buddy!
Thank you Alan! I will have to look into that mod. Could be a good way to get more battery life out of the SP! Thanks for the tip! Cheers!
Thank you! No channel seems to cover this info. I almost stress tested my own GBA's just to find out lmao.

Just ordered the retro modding type c battery. Going to be testing it soon! Cheers
Cheers dude!
where can this be bought? because i only get 1 hour of playtime on my gba sp which has a ips lcd v2, and that sucks
I use the ostent brand(aliexpress stuff) OG NDS battery for my GBA SP ips v2 mof.
I did the test and the results are
2.5 hours - max brightness
3.5 hours - default brightness
Note = didnt use flashcart
I wish to try makho battery mod, it seems to be the best so far (correct me if im wrong)
Why dont u try it? :)
Where to get it in Europe?
Makho made a few videos going over Gameboy Advance SP after market batteries. Some of them claimed 850mAh but really only had around 80mAh. There's too much variance in the after market options.
Agreed! It’d be awesome if there was a reliable aftermarket manufacturer. Cheers dude!
Thanks for taking the time to do this, so we didn’t have to.
Great vid. I'm actually planning on doing 2 mods of the ips v2 screens on my gba glacier and magenta consoles. After seeing your vids it seems well worth it.

Thank you ENERGYZER tm! So glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the kind words! Cheers buddy!
Thanks!
No problem! Glad the video was helpful for you! Cheers!
The SP's battery life makes sense since the battery only holds 850mAh of charge. Quite similar to the Gameboy Pocket where the weak AAA batteries only give it a charge of 1-3 hours.
I am a big fan of your videos. Premium quality content! 🤓 Great work! Keep going!
Thank you Henry! That really means a lot bro! Thank you for watching my videos and I’m so glad you’re enjoying them. Cheers dude!!

Thanks Jean-Baptiste! The AGB definitely holds its own and does really well! You rock too dude!!
I like how you test a 20 year old rechargeable system on a phone that's on the charger while performing the test :)
I’m more curious to see how an AGS works with a brand new 850mAh battery from the Mahko kit. Most reproduction AGS batteries barely hold half what they say. And old ones are well old.
Agreed! I need to pick up one of his battery boards! Cheers!
I know this video is old, but why does the battery light flicker on these? It’s kinda annoying
Greetings
take the GBASP with an un modded screen, time it from full charge to dead, figure out the percentage difference between that and what Nintendo suggests. run the test again with the alternate screen, adjust the percentage accordingly.
or use a multimeter to measure the mA of the battery at full charge, and then use that as a baseline
Great suggestions! I didn’t think of reattaching my ags-001 lcd. I should get a better multimeter. Any recommendation?
i have an ips scren on my sp, and battery life is pretty bad. only about an hour play time before the red light comes on with flash cart, maybe an hour & a half with legit cart. same story accross multiple batters from multiple sources, so its not just a bad battery. very frustrating.
10+ hour battery life of a GBA with an IPS display is really solid.
Have you ever used the megabat 800 battery? If so i have a couple of questikns like are they are and what size are they maining the thickness
Does using knockoff multicarts also kill the battery faster?
My SP, with the IPS v2 and a new aftermarket 850mah battery also clocks in right around that 3-3.5 hrs running the Metroid loop off an EZ Flash Omega flash cart.
Thanks for the input Paul! Do you know what brand battery you were using? Cheers!
the EZ flash also drains power
Do you know of any other flash carts that are more power efficient?

The battery life of my modded iPs Gameboy advance is currently an hour and a half at best. What can I do about this? It really sucks
Thank you! I would stay tuned for my next video! I think you will enjoy it very much! Cheers buddy!
Can you use rechargeable aa batteries?
Cheers buddy!!
how much playtime do you think i would get with a KMD in a gba sp with a ez flash omega and a ips v2 lcd screen?

nicklong27 and it is the 600 mAh kmd one on eBay that has the best battery life?
@@allancolic6291 I don't know if it has the best battery life out of all the aftermarket batteries but it's definitely good. Don't pay too much attention to the mAh ratings as the green Chinese ones you see everywhere claim 850 mAh but in reality are more like 400-450. There is a video somewhere here on UA-cam showing this. The KMD ones as far as I can tell are made in China but they are an American brand.
Not sure if this is a great test considering the sound has been turned down, as volume has a direct impact on battery life.
My AGB has an IPS and amp mod. Playing with the inefficient EZ Flash Omega, I probably get about 4-6 hours with eneloop double a. I haven't done an actual test, just a guess from how quickly my batteries show red.
Thanks for the input! Really appreciate it! I'd say 4-6 hours is pretty decent for rechargeable batteries and all the mods that you have. Cheers bud!

Greetings! You’re welcome bud! I hope that solves your power issues! Cheers!
Try to turn of the brightnes. I have a GBsp and i Made it last past 8 1/2 hour
agb battery life gets insane when you stick in some 2000mah nimh AA batteries in
mine lasted 8 hours on full brightness
This test basically shows up how small the battery is in the SP anyway. I’ve got rechargeable Lithium Ion AA Duracell’s in my GBA that hold 2500mah each. Battery life is incredible, I still have instant recharge but I can recharge them so I’m not throwing anything out when they run out of power. No Alkaline acid problems either...
Nice dude! Sounds like a great battery solution! Thank you for sharing!
I love your videos thanks
Thank you Joey! So glad you like the videos! Cheers dude!
You must have a dud SP battery as I'm using an original (13 years old) and I'm getting almost 6 hours on standard brightness
Wow nice! Thank you for sharing! Aftermarket batteries are usually pretty bad so I’m not surprised. Cheers Alana!
Yeah I wish, there would be an IPS Mod for the GBA with a laminated Display like on the GBA SP... The Space between the frontscreen and the actual Displays bothers me somehow...
That would be very convenient! Much easier to install also. Wouldn't need to worry about dust under the lens. Maybe one day dude! Cheers!
Was unsure about doing the ips mod on my gba sp, due to the impact it'll have on battery life. This video is really helpful.
Awesome! So glad it was helpful!
great video tito,i use ikea ladda batteries in my backlit gba
Yeah I hear the laddas are quite good! Are they made in Japan? I heard they are the same as eneloop, just rebranded. Cheers Lee!
@@MachoNachoProductions im note sure where they are made but they are cheap from ikea and are 2450mah.i use them in my pi and gameboy advance
Nice! I should pick up a set! That’s a pretty large capacity, I’m surprised. I wonder what my eneloops are? Cheers dude!
@@MachoNachoProductions no worries! i hear laddas are rebranded eneloops
Gotcha, nice!
this is a rly niche video but thx for making it
I’m confused can’t you just use a charging cable to charge it why are batteries important
I think some people would like to have more time in between charges. But you are right, you can always recharge the battery of the SP. Thanks for the comment! Cheers!
My 15 yo gameboy adv sp that’s been sitting for awhile (all original) clocked roughly 6 hours of play with mid volume…
The particular order I had on Amazon was called "NingB" but it looks like the same green battery is getting sold in many places. I'll link to one here that looks exactly like mine
www.amazon.ca/dp/B07YZFBKJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_jU94EbGQJFVKV
Thanks for the link Eric! I'll take a look and see if I should pull the trigger and get one! Cheers buddy!
Honestly over 10 hours on a GBA with double AA's is not too bad. I have rechargeable ones and i get about the same from it. Its pretty decent considering you can play that long on one charge
Totally agree! I think 10 hours is pretty good for a portable! Cheers bud!
You can put a dsi battery in your gba sp for more battery life and game play
Really?! That's so awesome! I didn't know that would fit! Do you need to modify the GBA shell or the DSi battery in any way? Thanks for the info! Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions nope it should fit
That is just so cool, thanks again for the tip!
Macho Nacho Productions your welcome
Cheers!
Why use a 1800mah battery mod when you can use 2800+ mAh rechargable AAs that sell for like $5 the pair?
@@MachoNachoProductions I believe retro six have a colaberation with them yes so probably the same or similar. Very easy mod to do but u have to snip a few bits of plastic out to fit it in. Can't coment on 2800 rechargeable and they sound like an awesome and much cheaper option. I do like the USB C tho won't be as handy when camping :) byw love your content. Keep it up :)
Thanks Dom! Will do man! Cheers!
Ou should have test it on original SP battery (600mAh), not custom 850mAh
looks like sp is not a good performer, old style batteries are the way to go
Unfortunately, I think the big issue for the SP is that a lot of the aftermarket options for batteries is not that great.
Cheers!
Next time use energizer ultimate lithium they last longer then duracell on full brightness
Thanks for the tip! Cheers!
Damn, on my double AA rechargeable battery with default brightness + sound mod, I get about 6 hours.
Hmm, I wonder if the sound mod is draining more power. For my tests, I had the sound off. Have you tried playing with the sound off to see if it lasts longer?
It'd be interesting to see what the results would be with sound on for my tests. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions My guess is yeah, the sound mod probably ate more power. But wouldn't it feels weird playing without sound, lol?
Haha yeah, I just run my tests with out sound cause I live in a small apartment. I think I would go mad after a few hours of listening to the opening to Pokémon blue lol.
@@MachoNachoProductions Use headphones.
All this is meaningless when you don't compare it using a handheld without the screen mod. Thanks for wasting my time
Thank you for taking the time to write this comment! Really appreciate it. Battery life for stock systems is pretty well documented, all it takes is a little effort on Google search. Also, I’m pretty responsive on the comments, so please feel free to ask me if the video includes the content you want to see. That way I can keep you from wasting your time watching videos that don’t have the content you’re interested in. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day and again, thank you. Cheers!
Your battery on the SP must be bad. From what I understand they are super hit or miss.
I need sp capacitors! Halp
Try console5.com. They have a ton of capacitor kits.
Macho Nacho Productions thank you I really appreciate it
You’re welcome dude!
