This is the second video I did for the Encore Azalea channel. Although I made this talking about Azaleas, it applies to pretty much all shrubs, trees, and perennials. Thanks for watching.
I wish you could help my hydrangeas I planted last spring! They were good for a while but then the leaves started getting spots on them, on all but 1 out of 4 hydrangeas? I tried hydrogen peroxide, I tried 2 different types of fungicide, including the kind you water in so the plant takes it up, but by the end of the season they barely had any foliage and no blooms, I have no idea what to do, I'm hoping the come up this year and do better
I absolutely love flowers but don't really have a green thumb 😩 but maybe now that ive found your UA-cam channel I can actually have the flowers I've always wanted! Thank you for all the little details that really make a difference!
@@Sg4809 I've just grown hydrangeas in containers. But I found they really preferred drying out before watering. I was watering them with an inch of water every week like my lawn beside it and they did terrible. But once I skipped watering and letting them almost dry completely then watering they improved dramatically. This is a very old post so hopefully you found the problem and didn't need this. But it made them totally change for me.
@@WillieWeed thank you for your reply, i don't have those same plants that i did have, i have moved since then but i will be doing some landscaping at our new home and hydrangeas are definitely first on my list and i will certainly try your suggestion, thank you so much
Once again - a treasure trove of such good information. Thanks for the instruction on watering, especially reminding us to water a wide area. I learned that from your videos early last year and believe that is why my young shrubs are looking better and putting on more growth. Thanks for the time you spend to provide these videos.
This was so helpful since I am new to Encore azaleas - Thank you! I planted 7 in zone 9b this summer with 95 plus temperatures. I am happy to report that they are doing great! Did nothing except water when we didn't have rain for a few days. One of my new favorites that is also gathering a lot of attention from my neighbors who love the nonstop flowers.
This Is my first Winter with Azalea . do i need to cover her all winter or does she like snow and cold? it is a baby bush, if it needs covering at what temperature.
Thank you so much. I enjoy seeing my Azaleas bloom in my front flowerbed. So much so, I'm looking to have someone install these as a natural fence in my backyard.
1- Ohhhh!!! Hold off on planting when they are newly purchased to enjoy the blooms. 2- my reblooming azalea is 3 + years old and this is the 1st year it bloomed. I thought the delay was me! Thanks for the info on this plant. 🌸
My grandmother had these beautiful red azaleas in her garden when I was growing up. I played by them all the time and they had many butterfly caterpillars on them
"Dry soil wicks the moisture away from the plant" ...I watch a LOT of garden videos. No body has mentioned this factoid. Genius statement that should be obvious. 🤯🤦♂️
I just bought an azalea Phoenicia. I’m a cactus person but I’m trying to add different kinds of plants to my collection. I do really like azaleas. It’s my middle name. 🙂
Awesome info. How much sun this plant likes and what type of soil? Mine is muddy and wet in winter, spring and beginning of summer and dry by end summer and fall.
What's the flowering mechanism for Encore Azaleas? Do they require a period of cool weather to break bud dormancy? If not, does that mean, like remontant roses, they are ever flowering in the tropics (or at least can be grown in the tropics with no real cool weather)?
My azalea was kinda pot bound when I repotted it 3 days ago. Is it worth or dangerous to take it out, do some cuttings in the roots and potting it again? Very informative videos about azaleas.
I love 💘 your videos. Now I know how to take care of an azalea. I am going to go and take some cuttings. I wish I knew where I could find encore azaleas. I live in zone 8b. Do you have any suggestions? I love 💘 the reds Autumn Fire 🔥 and Autumn Bonfire.
Hi it's my first time to have a Azalea plant is it possible Azalea will bloom in winter season love the flower of it can I put in side the house in winter season thank you fr. Celina
Now si have baby shrub outside from garden center, still blooming less and less . But I dont know ,does it need to be under snow for s while or completely protect it with coverimg . What Is the cold temperature it can tolerate.Tmx for video . I,ve been ruined many Azalea's because of wrong informstions.
I have in the past to create a thick ball, is to plant 2 close together. It'll have a thick center. A round ball may not have the best flowers, but it'll look better when it's just green. After a few years, the perfect ball hedge is formed. After 10 years, you'll get open holes and may have to start over. That happened to one of mine.
Hello, I'm in Zone 6a and planted Gerard Fuchsia Azaleas last fall. They were in full bloom when I planted them and they did great all fall. This spring they are alive, but the tops are brown and the leaves crunch off if you touch them. The brown stems are not dead, but I'm not sure what to do for them. What can I do to bring them back to life?
my azalea's leaves are turning brown on the tips. it stopped flowering within a couple of weeks after I brought her home. I live in sfo bay area. any reasons why? how can I fix? thanks!
Great videos. I always enjoy them. Question though, a lot of azaleas seem to get leggy and kinda thin in foliage’s they mature and get bigger, are their any of the encore azaleas that stay dense and full as they grow or can u achieve that with pruning as it grows and after flowering?
Great question. It is more than likely a sun issue more than a variety issue. They can be pruned pretty hard after flowering in the spring and that helps a lot. But most leggy Azaleas are in to much shade.
I am in India. Goa. When would it be right to start planting azelias ? At present I have hydrangeas , Gardenias which I believe have similar requirements ..sunlight , water etc.
to get started i used weed killer on both sides of my walkway. once the grass died out, i cleared out on both sides of the walkway with a tiller now theres only a few dead weeds or grass on both sides, so should i lay my weed barrier down first? length and width wise on both sides of the walkway,or should i lay down fresh top soil the length and width of the walkway, and then place the weed barrier on top of that....please answer..asap...thanks
Plz help I live in Houston Tx early this summer I bought some Azelea and they lost all flowers within a week which I’m ok with that But now months later they’re losing leaves and turning brown Are they dying? Btw before planting I went to Home Depot and I got me bags of new soil and fertilizer to make sure they’re good to go Plz help
Thank you for your informative videos! I was just gifted three small azalea plants. They are fully bloomed. I live in an apartment and can’t plant in the ground but I don’t want to get rid of them right now. What should I do with them? I watched your video about putting them in containers but didn’t know if I should do anything differently in the Spring AND them being in containers. Thank you!
I have several azaeias that heve just a few stems and only leaves on the ends of the branches, like 2 to 4 leaves. Should I dig it up and move it I am in zone 7 the plants have been in the ground 2 years, they acturally had blooms on them. I hope you can tell me what to do. I have started watering it them.
When we bought out house last year the builder planted azaleas as foundation plants in the front of the house. I was cleaning and weeding around them and noticed they still have the burlap around the roots, is this okay to leave them like this or will I need to dig them all up and take the burlap off the rootball?
In my experience it's been fine as long as the burlap was loosened from the stem base before planting. The burlap will decompose over time and the roots will push through.
my azalea is growing, blooming and looks healthy. This is its second season after buying. My concerns are the stems are skinny, and I do not see much new root growth. Even though I repotted it into a larger container, I can see the rootball shape it already had. Stil. Also, it does not hold its flowers very long. The petals drop very easily and quickly after it flowers. I started adding calmag, and some chicken manuer, as well as beneficial bacterias and fungus. I did a diluted vinegar treatment to hopefully raise Ph. Also I put in a slow release acid loving fertilizer. I hope this improves the strength of the plant. So far it looks great, but still waiting for these improvements.
I like you Jim, you're a good teacher and easy to listen to. We like your enthusiasm! Haven't heard you talk about a wife...are you married? Thanks for your videos.
I'm from the city of South Gate, also known as the city of Azaleas. I want to become mayor of South gate at some point and what I want to do is bring back the field of azaleas we used to have here in the 1800s. From what I've read it was the most abundant source of azaleas in The United states. I could be misinformed but feel free to call me out on anything I'm im ignorant to.
What kind of fertilizer should I use if I bought one for the store recently? The pot is a little small I'd like to give her a bigger one is that a good idea ? Also I noticed the soil has tiny tiny mites that seem to hop around when you poke em 🙃 she's kind of in quarantine. She has alot of lil bulbs but none are blooming 🤔

They attract butterflies. I read that on the label on the azalea I just bought a few hours ago.

Thanks! Got a few Encore Autumn Rouges and planting them in late spring today. This is helpful.
