Good Morning GA Friends!!!! I planted the Pollypetitie in a little space dedicated to my Grandmothers. Her name was Polly and that shade of purple was her favorite. Thanks to Laura and Aaron I now have "rooms" and spaces in my yard that are thoughtful and on purpose. I learn something daily from you all, thank you for everything!
Morning! Zone 2 here ! 🥶(gets down to minus 45) and let me tell you it can be frustrating finding perennials. There are (on avg) 6 frost-free weeks per year🤷♀️. I live vicariously through this wonderful community...lol! 🌿🇨🇦🌿
Oh my goodness I am so excited about these small shrubs, they are just what I want for my landscape! Leave it to Laura to keep us informed about quality plants!
Russell's swagging tail while Laura is talking about the Butterfly Bush was a fun distraction. Makes you wonder what was under the table. I want to add more small shrubs so I really enjoyed this video.
LOVE it when you do these top 10 (or so) lists! I learn so much! I seriously go back and watch them over and over - thank you so much for such thoughtful, educational, and inspiring videos!
Laura: I hope this was helpful…. In my opinion, ALL your videos are helpful! I learned so much from your channel and I honestly think my garden looks as it does now BECAUSE of all I’ve learned. Thank you so much for your informative and delightful videos! I look forward to seeing you every day. ☺️
Anyone else notice the cute dragonfly land on their new harvest basket top at about 5:23?🤩 Laura, you must be enjoying your nice, cooler mornings! The long sleeves are a dead giveaway... I am soooo jealous; here in the Phoenix, AZ area, we are still in as few clothes, as legally possible.😉😂🤣
I can’t believe I found you through looking for how to care for Hibiscus as a new gardener. I live on Guam and am UA-cam-ing how to care for my plants. I’ve been watching your videos and for some reason I never listened to your intro or info of how you are in Ontario, Oregon aka Eastern Oregon… I actually just moved to Guam from Eastern Oregon (La Grande) what a small world!! You do good work!! Thank you for so much info!!
Love watching your videos. Im recovering from covid and watching your videos in the morning gave me enough energy go water my plants i might have lost a couple plants but its better then losing all of them. Today I had enough energy to clean my garden. Thank you for what you and your husband do and keep it up.
Laura, this is packed full with excellent advice... you never want to plant something that wants to be bigger than the space.. and so many people want to shear everything to death and wonder why their plant is ugly and unhappy.. knowing growth habit is so important... if you want a box shape plant buy a boxwood not an azalea! ❤️
This is a perfect video for established gardens! Mine are pretty full already and these are great choices to fill in nooks and crannys. I have thrown so many things in willy nilly and now as you mentioned, is a time for more thoughtful designing. Thanks for all your design info and plant compatibility options!
It is perfect timing. I am at the stage of gardening of plant and forget. These shrubs are perfect. I am pitching some the perennials to make room. Besides with so many tree roots, these smaller sizes are easier to plant.
I need someone to sort my thuking garden, I ain’t got no money so looking for someone to work for a few thuking hours free I’ll sort a cup of tea I won’t pay petrol though
Thank you for this very informative video! We just had overgrown yews, burning bushes, quinces and boxwoods taken out today, and now comes the part where we find smaller/more manageable shrubs to replace them. Your channel is so helpful and enjoyable - I can't believe how much I've learned from watching your videos. Keep up the good work!
I just pulled out a small blue conifer from my landscape a couple days ago and I was actually thinking of shopping today/tomorrow!! Thank you so much, you psychic!
Your videos are such a great learning source. I really appreciated today’s video as you addressed small shrubs along w their growing habits/needs to thrive. I plan on redoing some of my landscaping and want to use plants/ shrubs that don’t require yearly pruning less fuss but lovely impact. Thank you!!
I have been watching your videos for a few years. Here in Wyoming we are the same zone and similar atmospheres. We bought a home on an acre and a half. Very little was done for the landscape. It's taken a long time to just get our lawn healthy. I have learned so much from your videos. This year I finally was brave enough to plant containers. With all your videos, I had beautiful, showy container flowers. They turned out beautifully! Thank you! I wish I could have you help us design our landscape. I really need to learn how to set up drip irrigation like you have set up. Love your videos and advice! And love watching your little family grow! You guys are amazing!
This video was very helpful. Thank you for that. As a teenager planting sometimes has to come with parents approval first. My parents don’t want me planting things that get big. I will definitely be looking into some of these plants for next year. 😁
Good day everyone! Laura, these breakdowns of various plant / shrubs / tree videos are among my favorite! Very informative as usually you might even know about plant options. I find myself going back to some of your previous videos like this one when I want to refresh my mind on others you have covered. You & your channel are tremendously appreciated!
Not related to this video, but I think an excellent video idea for the highlights channel is for Aaron to gather footage from over the years and put together a “what to do in the garden” by month series. It would be nice to see what Laura is sowing, planting, pruning every month in one video. I would imagine it to be especially helpful for those of us who don’t live in zone 6, who can’t follow Laura step by step to have a quick guide/check-list to refer to.
Yes, yes, yes, I totally agree with this, I'm in a zone 9 so I have to adjust a lot to earlier or later since our growing season is so long, but I also appreciate how hot it gets up there because it's like that for us down here, plus lots of humidity though🥵😆
Just recently found your channel. I just want to tell you I appreciate you so much. I'm learning, we finally have our permanent home and I have loved plants and gardening for years. Finding someone who loves plants and is willing to share all they know is such a wonderful thing for newbies. I am even going to look back and watch more of your videos. Sometimes it is really nice to hear that what you are doing matters! And it does! Thank you so much for sharing. You inspire me to try new plants and shrubs and your wealth of knowledge is amazing and appreciated so very much! Thank you and bless you!
Perfect timing! We just had an old driveway removed to create more planting space. We were talking last night about a short row of something right along one edge of the new space. Now we have some great options.
Good morning, Laura ☕️ Thank you so much for this list! Super excited for the Sugar Baby Forsythia 🙌🏻 It’s not easy finding small shrubs you can either tuck in or do a grouping of. I’m a happy girl! Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
I really appreciate the growing details that you share and the photos of plants. The cultural requirements of each plant is crucial to know before we choose our next plants. You have helped me expand my plant choices and inspire me to try new things. Thank you as always.
Laura, it is YOU that gets me going. You have saved me from many lazy days. You’re energy & enthusiasm is contagious and I’m motivated again! THANK U GURU!🙏🏻🤩
I really need this advice. As I built my garden all of flowers I loved their personalities showed me why you don’t plant too many cone flowers, they love to take over the garden, black eyed Susan’s do the same and bee balm can’t be planted too close to the house because they get moldy without air circulation. After pulling out all that Out I was at a loss of what to put in in now. I’ld already made mistakes of planting shrubs that quickly out grew their allotted spaces, these new varieties look just the thing! And they’re all so pretty! I’m excited again to find the best combinations for my yard, thank you so much for this video!
I’ve been watching your videos for years now, and I live vicariously through you and your garden space. I live in a zone 2a in central Alaska where not many things I’m dying to grow are perennial. Thankfully in a week I will be moving to NW Florida and will be in a zone 8b. I can’t wait to try out all of the things!! Thank you for all of the information, beauty, entertainment, and so much more you provide us viewers!
I love all the information and can honestly say I should just call my yard “Laura’s Garden” 🥰🌿💯 I really didn’t have this much passion about landscaping before finding you 4yrs ago!
Laura, I had 9 Rose of Sharon pop up next to each other so I divided them into 3 stems each and braided them and then braided the 3 groups into a 9 stemmed tree. It looks so cool and it has 3 colours.
So excited to hear about the Baby Kim lilac and Sugar Baby forsythia! I’ve always liked these shrubs but old varieties are just too big and hard to maintain. 😊
Zone 2 is Alaska! And I am so thrilled to see you talking about a plant hardy there. My husband and I are in the process of purchasing land to move to Alaska and I’ve been nervous about finding nice perennials to grow up there.
Thank you thank you thank you for discussing smaller versions of these gorgeous shrubs. For years I have been so jealous of some of the beautiful shrubs you plant but have not been able to fit them in my yard. Now I get to enjoy mini versions in my yard!!
Thank you!!! I love these videos. As someone newer to gardening, I’m trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible. Also, so helpful for those of us with small space!
Thank you so much for this video. Those of us who have small spaces or city sized lots often struggle trying to find and fit smaller beauties into our landscape - I know I do.
Can't wait for Laura to populate her Hartley with gorgeous specimens for zones 7,8,9,10, and beyond!... 😍 she'll be poised to serve and speak to all gardening zones, providing information and inspiration, thus serving a greater audience. Cheers!
Since I'm new to gardening these types of videos are so helpful! I'm landscaping and trying so hard to plant things of interest and that will look lush once mature. Its difficult to see what you "envision " when everything is small. Im hopeful though! Thank you for sharing!
You're very right that smaller shrubs can give a texture or colour to go in areas where other larger shrubs are. When you said that I instantly thought about the layering that they would create in combination with the larger shrubs. Great video Laura.
This was incredibly helpful! I live in a townhome with limited space in my flowerbeds. The list of plants I have learned about from your videos is definitely growing :) Thank you for all of the advice.
Thank you so helpful planning my sisters very large front garden she wants small shrubs as house is slab on ground no nasty roots and faces south just about planned the whole garden now just have to look a perennials to add more colour she is on a main road and wants lots of colour against her dark grey siding. Will be a fun garden for the 3 sister planting next spring!!
Perfect timing as I was looking for some small shrubs to help balance out the garden. I always enjoy watching you and your info is super helpful. Thank you!
Great list Laura! Deer thoughts (East End LI, NY, zone 7A): from my garden 🪴 aka deer buffet 😭 deer looooove the tater tot arbs, yet ignore the Firelight Tidbits for my more yummy big leaf hydrangeas. Panicle hydrangeas for the win!! My tiny wine Ninebarks are thriving and ignored by deer, and we’ve had so many monarchs on our buddleia this year! Deer not interested in it at all. We are going to plant a hedge of the Winecraft Black Smokebush next year to replace some Japanese cedars that the deer munched to death this past Winter. And a taller privacy hedge of Royal Purple smokebush too!! Thank you for all the great inspiration Laura!!
@@jonathandunn7576 they're a plague in New Jersey, especially the closer you get towards Pennsylvania (particularly BUCKS County--see that? It's actually named Bucks).
New Gardner in Ohio: This video is coming in the right time as my garden space looks like yours right now, only dirt. Our space is not very large, but We are redesigning the entire back yard, including a narrow side yard, looking about the size of your last home.
Wow! What an amazingly informative video, presented by the most enthusiastic and inspiring presenter! I'm looking forward to viewing your other videos. So glad I found you!
Please more videos like this! I live in the suburbs of ATL and don't have acres to dedicate to big plants. I would love some ideas for urban and suburban gardening.
Try watching these youtube channels: Horttube, Garden Obsessions, Linda Vater, Summer Moon Garden, Garden Queen, Garden Addictz, Southern Entertaining, just to name a few. They all garden in regular neighborhoods, all Southern climates, except for Garden Queen (St. Louis). Older videos from Roots and Refuge as well as Suburban Homestead would be worth watching, too!
Took all the notes on these small area bushes! Thanks again, Laura, I will be looking into these to plant this season. I have a few small areas in front of the house, by the staircase that leads to our front door, as well as small flower beds on either side of the front porch.
Sooo informative. I have learned so much from you and find your videos so relaxing! As someone with a small yard, I loved this one. Would love to see more videos with plant ideas or grouping of plants for those of us with small yards. So jealous if your beautiful piece of property!!! Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your channel!
Love your Hartley Laura but give me your mom’s potting shed any day! I have put my husband on notice that a potting shed is in my near future. Thanks for sharing your love of flowers 💐
At last! A youtube resource so close to me geographically! I'm very excited to try some of the varieties that work well for you. Hopefully they will work for me in Meridian!
I'm a zone 9 so you make me want to move! Love these, fell in love with the ninebark! Thank you for bringing up the Pillar Rose of Sharon too... I was just considering them again and forgot their name! Ha! Thanks for all you give us Laura!
Love your knowledge and how down-to-earth you are-what a joy and refreshment for UA-cam🤍 very grateful! Want to share you videos with everyone!! Thank you for all the wisdom you provide!
I love Laura’s lists of plants, because it helps me focus on one particular consideration, which is so much easier for my overloaded mind. One comment though: I find that despite labels saying “deer resistant”, most plants are chewed to bones by the deer, especially in the spring, so I would treat that information with some caution.
This video was so helpful Laura! I live these kind of videos! Im going into year 2 at our new property & these are so helpful when you talk about each ones light requirements and water requirements. I have clay soil & we get 66 inches of rain per year, so I need things that can handle wet feet! So excited for Miss Kim & Pollypetite!
I planted a Diablo Ninebark about mid-summer. The leaves started to crisp up a bit which had me worried, but I noticed some new growth pushing through yesterday when I was going through my beds. Keeping my fingers crossed it pulls through this winter because it is such a pretty plant.
Such an informative video! In south central Virginia (by a lake) deer are a plenty, and hungry!! It’s an ongoing battle to keep them at bay, but you have given me so many good ideas of what to put in the landscape. Hopeful I can find some of those plants locally. I so appreciate all the time and effort you and Aaron put into your videos to give us ideas, inspiration and encouragement!
Keep in mind that deer will eat anything, they don't pay any mind to plant tags. The deer in Arkansas eat rose bush canes full of thorns, fuzzy sedum, "poisonous" peonies.......all things the experts say they wont eat. It varies by year, and you can never tell what they will go after. They do seem to prefer the new growth of anything, but the only thing I have ever known them not to at least try are iris and daffodils.
Loved this video for ideas for my smaller garden beds. Any chance you could do a similar video on smaller sized plants that add height like the white pillar?
I LOVE these videos! I'm always so inspired to create a new flower bed or add to an existing one when I see you talk about such great options. Thank you for providing such useful content that saves me hours of research.

We are going to plant a hedge of the Winecraft Black Smokebush next year to replace some Japanese cedars that the deer munched to death this past Winter. And a taller privacy hedge of Royal Purple smokebush too!! Thank you for all the great inspiration Laura!!
Deer are a nemesis on the north shore of Long Island.
I’m going to plant some firelights if the deer don’t eat those ! We have a family of 20 living in our development 😞
Thanks for you sharing your experience, I also serve up a deer buffet, the struggle is very real!
@@jonathandunn7576 they're a plague in New Jersey, especially the closer you get towards Pennsylvania (particularly BUCKS County--see that? It's actually named Bucks).
VA is the perfect home for deer. They are everywhere. My yard is like a buffet for them even though some plants are ignored.
New Gardner in Ohio: This video is coming in the right time as my garden space looks like yours right now, only dirt. Our space is not very large, but We are redesigning the entire back yard, including a narrow side yard, looking about the size of your last home.
How are you doing today Angie and how is the weather over there
You always inspire me, I went out and bought 3 micro chip butterfly bushes!! I am so excited to see them grow!
How are you doing today Lindsay and how is the weather over there
The microchip butterfly bush seems like a great improvement over the punster series which has been quite inconsistent in zone 6.
Oh and Gardening with Creekside; they have a larger property but only garden around their house, so they use smaller plants.
@@HappyCats17 I watch Horttube and Gardening with Creekside. I will have to check the rest. Thank you for these recommendations! :)
Good morning, GA friends! ~ Lisa
Love to see these smaller varieties as my own garden is quite small.
Love your Hartley Laura but give me your mom’s potting shed any day! I have put my husband on notice that a potting shed is in my near future. Thanks for sharing your love of flowers 💐
Perfect timing as I was looking for small shrubs for my front yard for next spring. Hopefully I will find some of these at my garden centre next year!
I have two rose of Sharon plants in zone 8 sunny locations. Love them!
How are you doing today Candace and how is the weather over there
Hi Laura and Aaron! I really enjoyed this because all of my plants are in pots at the back of the house. Thank you so much for sharing!
So much good information Ms Laura and Mr. Aaron. Thanks so much. Be safe and well. God bless.
I really appreciate this information for small spaces in my suburban garden in MN (zone 4). Thank you!
I love these videos, love that you share the link to information on each plant for our reference. So helpful. Thanks Laura
I planted a Diablo Ninebark about mid-summer. The leaves started to crisp up a bit which had me worried, but I noticed some new growth pushing through yesterday when I was going through my beds. Keeping my fingers crossed it pulls through this winter because it is such a pretty plant.
How are you doing today my name is winston Moore and how is the weather over there
Only one shrub included zone 9 the last one. Would love if you could make suggestions for shrubs for zone 9. Thank you!
Thanks for all your videos and input. Your taste of flowers is very similar to me. I have learned so much from you. Thanks!
This video was so helpful! Your depth of knowledge and the manner in which you communicate it was terrific. Thanks!
Wow! I just pulled out a small pine tree from my garden because it was dying, great timing!! Love your videos Laura and Aaron 💕
I’m in VA also and the deer have a hardy appetite around here. There’s not too much they don’t like.
How are you doing today my name is winston Moore and how is the weather over there
Keep in mind that deer will eat anything, they don't pay any mind to plant tags.
Just wanted to let you know that I love your videos. Been in an apartment and have recently bought a house. Bought 3 of your recommendations.
I love these videos where you show us different types of plants, it’s so nice to hear all the information so we can make better informed decisions!!😊
How are you doing today Schumacher and how is the weather over there
I LOVE these videos! I'm always so inspired to create a new flower bed or add to an existing one when I see you talk about such great options. Thank you for providing such useful content that saves me hours of research.
Wonderful, informative video, Laura! So many of us have limited space and these are great options, many thanks! 💜
