The way they handled racism is still so poignant and so good. You immediately realize the subtext when Cyborg responds to Starfire’s question: “Of course, I do. I’m part robot.” Hmm! Starfire deserves so much better.
yeah
Darn right, Starfire deserves better. No one should be treated the way she was, no one.
Facts
Agreed, but I don't understand why they acted so weirdly and as if the show tackling racism was wrong
I agree. It tackled the issue without being too much of a”Wokeness” back then any type of political issue or racism would be handled properly. Now these days, it’s too much agenda and not enough storytelling to address the issue
Robin’s habit of jumping full heartedly off of tall places is especially fearless when you recall exactly how his parent’s died, it really shows that he’s conquerored most of his childhood trauma.
"Why did that sound like a Slur?"
Ruff unlocked his Observation Haki!
“You may not value my life, but I still value yours” is a line that hit so hard, imma get that shit tattooed
"Troq" feels like a bit of reality. We associate superheroes with our ideals, but if they existed, they'd be diverse in ideology, and thus some of them could very well be discriminatory.
Think of how many people were fuming when the Watch Men show made Rorschach out to be exactly how he is in the comic, instead of a badass power fantasy that Zach Snyder made him.
Mainstream superhero comics don't touch on it often of course, I mean there's light stuff like Spider-Man declaring he's not a mutant to appease bigots in front of his mutant girlfriend Kitty Pryde, but that was more like him just being misguided than actually bigoted himself. Kick-Ass was pretty racist and homophobic in the comic but instead of that being admonished or even focused on it felt more like a product of the times. After all it is hard to market someone as a genuine hero when they help some people more than others, which isn't heroic. I think non-hero comics do a better job of showing the diversity of ideals of the protagonists.
@@billbill6094 ...Snyder didn't make Rorschach a 'badass power fantasy'. He depicted the guy as a psychotically violent madman entirely incapable of compromise of any sort.
@@billbill6094 Don't forget how Cyclops and other mutants hace called out Captain America and the Avengers for anti-mutant bias.
@@TimedRevolver I agree with you that that's what he was, but at what point did Snyder ever treat this as a negative? At what point was Rorschach's violence in the movie not treated as badass or just? I think the depiction of his first kill is actually one of the better scenes in the movie, but instead of playing it later in the movie as a man who broke and went too far it was more a man finding out that reality included ultraviolence so it should only be met by ultraviolence. "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me" was clearly intended to show off the badassness of the character, not to show him as in severe mental distress. His actions may have been psychotically violent but the subtext was clearly one of might makes right and eventual martyrdom. Snyder either misread the comic and confused Rorschach for a cool badass and wrote him as such, or he wanted to create a badass in his movie and accidentally made a psychotic because he finds those actions cool. There's a reason Alan Moore hates the movie, and the wave of people afterwards who began identifying with Rorschach.
And it's not exclusive to Rorschach, think of how violent and grounded the fights seem in the comic and then look at how overly stylized and fantastical the movies were, clearly there with the intention of showcasing the hero's up as badass instead of depicting the world as a cold and uncaring. Think of how Snyder does the same job of depicting fascists or oppressors as badass power fantasy's in all his other work, 300 for example where the intention was to show how amazing their spray tanned abs looked as they fought.
Think of how Snyder was handed Batman and decided to characterize him in the opposite direction of the comics, not because he had anything interesting to say doing so but because he self-admittingly just wanted to do the opposite of what he was told the character should be, he was told the character doesn't kill and instead of thinking why he went "now I want to do the opposite". He made Batman a killer because it's his default and was showing off how badass a bat eared man is when he murders indiscriminately.
I think you give Snyder and his stories too much credit. He depicts psychotic actions yes, but he depicts them as power fantasy's committed by grecian gods. His idea of subtle story-telling is have Superman stand in front of Jesus as he asks a pastor how can he better be jesus.
@@billbill6094 When did they show it as a negative? Did you watch the movie?
Characters call him out on his behavior constantly. He's portrayed as blatantly unhinged and unhealthy.
I get why you'd be biased against Snyder, but this ain't the hill tod ie on, Skippy.
28:41
That hard "WHAT?!" with the tensing of his shoulders hit different
Dude should be glad it was Dick Grayson, the 'nice' Robin.
Jason Todd would have beat him until he was shitting teeth.
I didnt even notice the tensing of his shoulders, thats such a nice subtle detail
I loved the Troq episode, so many good points.
Stuff like how people unaware of the situation will eventually imitate their models (Cy calling Star Troq thinking it was ok),
Cy relating to starfire with the “I’m part robot”,
Starfire being the better person by trying to not cause conflict
Telling Robin the issue once it’s realized instead of suffering alone
And how Valor is a hero despite being a racist, showing that anyone can racist even if they aren’t a villian
And this is another reason why it's sooo good but makes Me sad cause it's real literally you could save their life and they still rather die then get help from the person/people they hate and there was no "happy ending" Val was still a piece of crap but taught us to only care about words of people we care about
Val Yor, not Valor
Val-yor really hit Starfire with "You must be one of the good ones" 😂
Raven beating up Slade was so satisfying to watch and I just love Raven-centric episodes
It was payback for how he tormented her in that past episode 😁
So do I.
Raven is the goat
Raven-centric episodes are the best ones for sure. 💜
I love how Robin’s response to Beast Boy complaining about his arms getting tired whenever he flies or runs is that he doesn’t need his own mode of transportation like He or Cyborg have, he just needs to workout more so he won’t get tired so easily.
Space racism.
Next scene:
Happy Birthday!
52:30 Man, can't believe they forgot that Starfire needs to feel "unbridled joy" to fly. It's only been 40 episodes and various movies, other shows, etc 😂
I thought that she needed Sun, at least in some comics.
@@kailevil3444yeah in the comics but in this her powers are more emotion based. Tbh that point was like early season 1 and probably shouldn't expect them to remember it.
I mean if this is your only source of Teen Titans lore and it’s been 40 episodes without that being brought back again then…
To be fair, didn't the show completely ignore that a few times? Like the metamorphosis episode, I doubt she was feeling any sort of joy when she flew to space.
@@thisisanickname231 yeah lol shows can be wish washy with stuff most times
I have a distinct childhood memory of watching when Raven just goes off on Slade. It was one of the first "Oh shit!" moments I can recall watching a show
I have the same memory. Her showing her true power felt like something significant and world altering at that point, like a paradigm had shifted. It's right up there with Zuko joining the Avatar in ATLA as the biggest "oh shit" moments I had watching cartoons.
I love that Starfire doesn't even know what girlfriend means so shes just upset that robin doesn't think of her as a friend. 🤣 i just find it adorable because poor robin has to explain it
After Episode 7, Raven needed that spa day on that planet 😂
It's amazing how him saying "you must be one of the good ones" makes it even more racist.
Thats real though.....Cant count how many times people have been surprised and praised me for being one of the good Black people.....
It's how he rationalozes it
We finally get to the “Employee of the Month” episode. An episode so popular, Teen Titans Go! remade the episode years later. At least for the original, you can’t just hear the voice actors saying “Didn’t we already say this?”.
Wait, Teen Titans Go remade the Newfu episode? Huh. Neat
One of the best aspects of how the show handled racism is that Val Yor wasn't revealed to be the villain of the episode; he was a bigot but otherwise he was a hero trying to stop an evil force, which makes it all the more real. The end also felt more realistic in that, while he admited that he was wrong about Starfire, he racionaliced it as a "she's different" kind of way.
Something else i noticed is that the episode contrasts 2 different types of bigotry. There's the Crixes' genocidal hate against organic life and then there's Val Yor's prejudice against Tamaranians which, while bad, is limited to not liking them instead of being genocidal.
Troq is my favorite racism episode of any show precisely because of how real it is. Any other show, especially a children's cartoon, would have painted Val Yor as an irredeemable monster and the twist villain. But this show took a much more mature approach and said that while racism is evil, not all racists are evil. They can be otherwise good people, and that's why it's so important to pay attention. We need to look everywhere to find the hidden racism and expunge it, or else it'll just fester.
It's a shame that we didn't pay attention, because racism has become a much bigger problem than when this episode came out 20 years ago.
@@Celestia282 I think you severely misunderstood the message of the episode
I remember my mother being so proud of how teen titans handled the racism. She loved only a few of the cartoon network shows, TT and Code Name were it. Still one of my favorite episodes.
Rob Paulsen who was Carl Wheezer is also several voices in this show as well as the Tofu cube. He also voices Mr. Fenton from Danny Phantom and the Box Ghost. He was also in Animaniacs and the Mask animated series. He’s so iconic and pretty much in almost every show yall have seen 😂🎉
Do people really need the concept of door to door vacuum cleaner salesman explained to them these days?
My Dad let one carpet shampoo our family room (making it perfectly clear he was in no way going to buy a thing but he’d sit through his presentation). Honestly an instructive experience for me as a kid as I now recognize classic salesman techniques more readily when I’m doing things like buying a car.
Especially since they watched Gravity Falls.
Where Stan literally was a door-to-door salesman conman during the Stanley/Stanford reveal backstory.
You know it gets good when you guys just go “Ohhh!!” during such a shocking moment
For those that don't know when beast boy rearranged cyborg that was a reference to an old anime/manga Giant Robo. It's a deep cut en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Robo
He also turned into Chewbacca as a reference to Empire Strikes Back.
@@Celestia282 True. I only brought up the robot one since it's more obscure.
9:47 women having pockets its probably more unbelievable than them having superpowers
52:40 Remember the episode where Raven and starfire Switch Bodies?
She needs to feel unbridled joy to be able to fly
NGL, when the episode in space where Robin gets stranded aired, I thought the little aliens were always saying "shut up."
Watching the episode with Raven’s prophecy and the introduction for trigon is so nostalgic cause I remember not know what the hell was happening as a kid other than just that Ravens dad was a bad guy. But now with a better understanding of it makes me love the season even more
Ok so many good episodes all packed in together.....but you guys saying SHALA!!! WAS SO CUTE THOUGH?!?!❤❤❤❤
I bet they'll randomly say it to themselves now
“Hey, Bruce, could we please get Gar-“
“I will be damned if I pay for Beast Boy to get a moped. If he’s not wearing a Robin or a Batgirl costume he’s not getting squat.”
Raven looking menacing in the thumbnail!
28:23: Man, this is a good episode.
Man, all cartoons back in the day had a swear word episode, but this is perhaps the only one I watched as a kid with a slur episode. As a kid I didn't even get the subtext of Cyborg, a black man, saying he also knew what it was to be judged on just his appearance. Now "of course I do, I'm a Cyborg" just feels like his character knows what he really wants to say but is sparing Starfire from the realities of Earth bigotry. I also like how they didn't have a moment where he changed his ways because of Starfire's actions, it wouldn't have been realistic. Him holding on to his biases even while trying to make an exception, not understanding that it's still an insult to be "one of the good ones", is just so accurate. And that he reverts back to his bigotry immediately when pushed back on a little is just 1:1 how it usually goes.
On a lighter note, that conversation about Beast Boy's physiology and his equipment sounds exactly like what the boys and I used to talk about. And as soon as I saw the Trigun poster in the background I knew he was going to point to it when they revealed Trigon.
Y’all cut out to much of raven fighting slade! That was one of the best scenes 😢😢😢
That episode on dealing with racism was just too close to home. And people really tell you whatever without even seeing the problem with it. A cashier really looked at me and my mom making small talk with us and then had the audacity to say “oh you are big what do you eat? Frijoles and arroz” in the most thick accent. I’m Hispanic and I just started laughing from the shock and audacity that man had.
I love how, IMMEDIATELY, every guy who sees Mega Meat or whatever, is down no questions asked. We're all just the same hungry idiot.
As a girl. I am down for a meat place. I hate veggies and I struggle to get them in my diet.
The day I can’t eat meat any longer is going to be a tragedy. I love protein and meat that much.
(At 10:34) "can I get some nuggets?"
"FOR THE LAST TIME, WE DON'T HAVE NUGGETS!"
Pigs are actually incredibly clean animals. The only reason they roll in mud is to keep themselves cool, and since they are more often kept in tiny, enclosed spaces crammed with a bunch of other pigs making it no doubt hot as hell, then of course they'll do anything to stay cool. If you just give pigs a decent place to stay where they can regulate their temperature better, they won't need to roll in mud.
I totally also have a sensitive stomach and get sick easily so those raw meat pictures also werent doing me any favors lol and to the question of the smell of food cooking and its affects- it can make me very sick, in middle school i had to eat isolated in a classroom because the lunchroom smells were too much. I definitely get eating to survive. 😅
Something i noticed right away watching the stranded planet episode was that we as the audience already knew Starefire needs to focus on happy feelings to fly- because of the puppet king episode where she and Raven switched bodies. Raven struggled to fly in Starfire's body because focusing on happy emotions isnt her norm. It was a cool call back!
23:00 I'm sure you know this but just in case series creator Glen Murakami would later go on to create Ben Ten alien force which is why the aliens look so similar (and a lot of the VAs are in the same series too).
Its getting good people I still love how Teen titans just keeps getting better
How did it take my Percy Jackson and Teen Titans loving ass until 2024 to recognize the "as long as we're together" cliff scene parallels
The Teen Titans Go version of the first episode is almost exactly the same yet this one is somehow more strange
7:30 As a worker in fast food I can say with a 100% bona fide acurracy that this.....does happen. No one there, you turn away to do something, you hear a small noise, turn back around and five people are staring at you XDDD with more incoming.

46:50 Holy Crap!
49:21 Cooless Robin!
50:43 Insect!
51:27 Perfect Timing!
53:40 Dam!
55:00🤣🤣🤣
Another great group of reactions! I love both the intense episodes and the silly ones, though they do give whiplash. The last one with Robin and Starfire had me hoping for a real emotional moment so much, just kiss dammit! The slow burn due to Robin being socially awkward is oooof.
21:31 kinda funny how you predicted the theme of this episode unintentionally & so casually
I mean, the only people that wouldn’t pick up the racist undertone from that are well, racists
You can't tell me that Starfire couldn't have hung Val Yor out to dry with total ease. This dude was writing checks his mouth couldn't cash, honestly. He's lucky that she's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
Compare the other Titans, Beast Boy has a limit of what how far his animal forms can go. So he's probably the only one that has to put some more effort in to it than everyone else, especially Robin, who's got a suit, gear, and other transportations his size.
43:30 You are going to regret what you said, and I will love when the time comes 🤣 I don't know why she hates her so much, I know Terra did almost everything wrong, but still she isn't that monster she says about her; Terra is just a well written complicated character!
It’s episodes like “Stranded” that makes me appreciate the relationship between Robin and Starfire more because they are thrown in a predicament where their friendship is being tested and how dependent they are to each other in a dangerous situation.
Idk, I think “Switched” did it way better, only with Raven.
@@Victor-qx3vx No argument there.
Oh my gods how did yall manage to watch four of the most iconic episodes all at the same time. Each one of these is going in the hall of fame for a different reason
Always a good start to the day when I can get a new video from the boys, and girl. I love the original TT and how they easily mixed serious story driven episodes in with comedy/purely fun episodes. They did the mix really well. Teen Titans Go (TTG) is a whole lot of silliness with much simpler animations, but the same voice actors. Plus, TTG has some of the best music ... The Night Begins to Shine is awesome! Happy Belated Birthday Bree!
The trope of people not willing to communicate is a trope for a reason. Doesn't matter how close you are to someone there's some secrets people just don't want others to know. It's common in everyday life. I'm sure you guys have stuff you don't tell each other as well.
Slade just casually fixing his broken neck is wild, I don't know *how* that got past censors.
"Back when gas was 4 dollars a gallon"
Nearest gas staion to me: 4.25
Yeha times really changed in the last 20 years XD
Just so you're aware, the Teen Titans game is a 3d brawler/beat 'em up. With an arena fighter mode.
As for the overarching story steak, Remember what Raven said about how she connects with an object when using her powers? The reason why she rarely directly applies her powers on throwing people around? Yeah, Slade got her to really give in to her anger on multiple levels.
Also, Raven's secret carries a bit more weight than the others' have. She is an instrument of armageddon. Demon spawn.
Me, every two to three days, with no prompting: "It is our wayyy. Weee are nufu."
I’m wondering if Val Yor gave the rest of the team nicknames just so he could openly insult Starfire?
I don't think so. He wasn't subtle about his discrimination, and besides his racism towards starfish, was a hero and seemed to like them. Plus he came off as a golden Era superhero with that superhero voice, friendly to kids, mentoring type character who would give nicknames to kids like "sport". I think they used that image of a kind of golden era superhero to drive home harder that not all racists are necessarily villains (in that they actively try to harm or go out of their way to purge) as they can be police officer, fire fighters, and doctors who are a net positive to society as a whole and can be pleasant and very helpful to others, but would rather not associate with people they think are less than and keep them left out.
I luv their off topic topics that has nothing to do with the show, but starts from seeing something in the show. 😂
13:20 ngl, Beast Boy looking down at you like that, fangs and everything, would be kinda terrifying xD
43:05 Beast Boy and Raven there 🙌💚💜
50:06 is a reference to the anime Giant Robo.
We're flying through Teen Titans, i'm sure going to miss it once you all finish reacting to it.
There were a handful of Teen Titans video games. Iirc, the PS2 one was the most famous.
Gotta say, mopeds are fantastic mode of transportation in European cities. It just WORKS.
5:00 the whole beast boy thing needed things to help him with his powers is understandable. I think other heroes like flash's suit does exactly what their suggesting. His suit doesn't burn as he runs. Also another unrelated hero, dash frok incredibles had a cool super hero suit feat of the suits legs automatically running so dash doesn lose stamina as he runs. These have nothing to do with beast boy but just cool ideas I seen used.
If Bre only likes bean and cheese burritos, she'd probably love my mom homemade refried beans. She soaks the beans (to remove residual dirt and extra starch), then puts them in a crockpot all day (with enough water to cover), mashes them and then adds green chilies and cheese. It goes so good in a burrito or as a side for enchiladas! I highly recommend trying homemade refried beans.
Also ants taste bitter as hell, only reason I know is because I snuck cookies into my room as a kid and accidentally attached ants. I didn't realize until I went to eat the cookie and it tastes so bitter. Look down and there are ants on them. The funny shit I did as a kid. XD
Let’s all be honest. Raven needed this after the last episode
Bob's voice sounds like the dad from Dexter's Lab
16:50 i love that yall gave it a try, hey 👏 Beast Boy would be proud
I love this plot with the whole Raven and Slade thing
21:00 pretty sure that thing about all the stars we can see being dead is a myth. Stars last a suuuuper long time and the stars you can see with the naked eye arent that far away (like. Comparatively XD) so most of them are still there
I believe there's life out in the universe but I don't believe aliens will ever come to Earth, you would literally need to be able to traverse beyond the speed of light or live for trillions of years to even get close to it
But yeah the racism episode was very very well done, especially given at the conclusion Val Yor doesn't learn the error of his ways or makes a 180 or is even a villain to vindicate his shittiness, he is just shitty, and stays shitty because he's too ignorant and pigheaded to realise it.
Can we talk about how we got the racism episode aftet space tofu lol we go from funny cows food and meat to oh my god this hits too real
I said Sha La as soon as the little guys showed up, funny the memories our bodies store. I remember that meat episode freaking me tf out.
Interesting how they reused the tofu episode for teen titans go
Bree's face not buying any of it 😂😂 5:05
Its awesome they have the 'Troq' episode. That moment with Cyborg is one of the best 🙌🙌
31:35 Starfire Honey I'm So Sorry Valyor Treated You Like That.....
6:55 Beast Boys worst nightmare
.
(I just noticed the first episode they reacted in this video it’s literally the same as a teen titans go one, they literally took the concept of this episode to make there own thing)
Beast Boy episode 🙌💚😆 Employee of the month is one of my favourite episodes
Can we just take a moment to think about how Nufu isn't actually a meat alternative since it's still an animal byproduct? So if Beast Boy followed through with that interrogation threat.... Well eating the source would make him a carnivore.
Ehh it depends. Just because The Source is alive doesn’t necessarily mean he counts as as animal. If he is biologically just Newfu that happens to be alive then eating him wouldn’t be carnivorous because he isn’t meat
40:10 Azarath 💜 this reminds me of the reaction of Switched with Raven and Star, "i was born in a place call Azarath" and how they kdbfnfkf bc they wanted more
(At 4:04) except Starfire and Raven DON'T really need to put any "effort" into it.
I was saying "SHALLA" with y'all. lol
Pigs actually don’t like to get dirty they only be in mud because you put them in mud they are also one of the cleanest and smartest animals it is other than pigeons and rats
49:57 Did you guys notice Chewbacca?
I’m surprised boom didn’t say anything lmao!
I miss this show. The way they handled the racism is so on point.
Trigon is voice by Kevin Michael Richardson ❤❤❤❤❤
The president from Monsters vs Aliens really took a turn in this season.
51:50 from what I've seen of Teen Titans Go, it's basically that, but cranked up to 10000 while also being a heartbreaking amount out of character >.>'
I get why some people enjoy it, but personally, I couldn't stomach it (probably could've liked it tbh had the show been about different characters, but the fact that they used these specific Titans for making such a show when the fans have been begging and petitioning non-stop to get season 6 ever since Teen Titans got cancelled was just.. kind of a gut punch :( )
I do not remember the Employee of the Month episode AT ALL. They must not have re-run it very much because I'm not sure I even actually saw it.
43:18-43:28: Slade doesn't want Terra to be resurrected, he wants something else, and for the record, Slade and Terra were NOT in a romantic relationship like their comic counterparts. Slade only viewed Terra as an apprentice, nothing more.
Honestly while they definitely didn’t have the relationship they did in the comics I wouldn’t be surprised if some small part of Slade does actually care for Terra.
The following is spoilers, though I’m pretty sure there already finished with the series at this point, but the fact that Terra just so happened to be brought back after Slade got whatever it was he was after is slightly suspicious. Though I am inclined to agree that he’s only after his own life and her resurrection is a result of Raven reversing Trigon’s effect on the world.
The bigger thing IMO is that when Beast Boy is dealing with Terra being back not only is Slade the only other person to acknowledge it but he specifically tells him to respect her choice to just be a normal person.
@@jonasquinn7977 Exactly, well said.
9:27 nobody tell him
Troq was a really good episode about racism
(At 48:25) sha la? I thought they were saying "shut up"
11:16 reminds me of The Borg from Star Trek!
42:02 Scorpion approves
Did anyone want a spin off episode with raven and the tiny sha la Aliens and the titans find her and robin goes nuts because he had to somewhat admit his feelings while she had a spa day 😂
Happy Belated Birthday Bree!
Perfect time to watch Raven's Birthday Prophecy episode lol
