"You may not value my life, but I still value yours". That line hit me hard.
Unfortunately, people don't think like that anymore.
@@jaylenharris343cuz pettiness rules all.
Starfire and Cyborg is a pairing I've grown to appreciate because of the heavy themes in the episodes they share serious and heartfelt interactions.
Episode 6, when things got real…real serious. That message at the end cuts deep.
I've seen some people complain (most notable being Shady Doorags) that the Titans aren't being the better people at the end of "Trog" and are mean to Val-Yor at the end.
But the thing that people forget is that they are the TEEN Titans. They're teenagers first and superheros second and what do teenagers often do: disregard adults. Especially when they're mean to one of their friends. Remember, Robin went on his own because he was tired of Batman's shit.
The Titans reactions to Val's racism is very real. When the others found out that an adult they thought was cool turned out to be racist to one of their friends, they felt betrayed and wanted nothing to do with him. Granted that part is not just limited to teenagers. Adults can immediately want nothing to do with someone if they were racist to a good friend or family member.
Its not that deep tbh, they don't like him cause he's racist. He was still racist at the end. I'm not sure what it has to do with them being teenagers or better people.
That’s a fair point. I can see doorags point about how they should’ve handled it, as I think it’s how situations like that should be handled as such. But I can yours being a lot more believable
I only watch Shady's KOTH content anyways tbh
I love that the writers allowed Starfire to be imperfect in this episode. She bumped their weapon, she triggered the mine. But just because she was imperfect and might've played into Val Yor's image of her doesn't make the way he treated her ok. No minority should have to "prove" bigots wrong to be respected.
I like how the second episode didnt end with valjor changing his mind about tamaranians. It s realistic and it s about showing the audience how the characters dealt with that racist character in the right manner. It was appropiate considering the ending also shows that valjor wasnt just racist, but also bigoted.
Troq is easily among my top 3 favorite episodes of the show. Absolutely loved the message the episode brought. And the conversation between Starfire and Cyborg is one of my favorite moments of the show
Modern show now s can't do it like teen titans and static shock do it
Fun Fact: The “Employee of the Month” episode might be the most popular episode of the show, since I’ve heard a lot of people talk about it. It’s such a popular episode, Teen Titans Go did a remake of it years later. Apparently that show wanted to pay a little homage to their previous incarnation.
That’s crazy! Cuz I do not have that nostalgia hit when watching that episode. All lot of other episodes in this show give me that sense of nostalgia but the Employee of the month one doesn’t, I don’t know why.
I didn’t know that, I guess I didn’t watch this episode.
Personally the Tofu episode was my most hated episode of the show more so than the one with the Alien Dog Episode
@@arnavmekala4578 if you watched the anime fooly cooly you would
I really like Troq because that’s when teen titans’s gets the most real as racism is a subject that’s completely serious and delicate which was executed perfectly as not everyone will change their mind about someone no matter what
It's even more real when you remember the Titans are teenagers and when they found out that an adult was mean to their friend, they wanted nothing to do with him.
@@Zacman1123 Yeah it really shows how amazing of friends and how mature they are which I’m glad to see.
Well said
It's to remind them they they literally came together for there difference
@@Ash1627 same here
I hated that guy who insulted Starfire. She's so sweet. But I do like how she proves him wrong and stood strong no matter what. I look forward to more plus her speech at the ending it was inspiring.
Agreed
Voice probably sounds familiar because it’s the same voice actor that voiced Professor Utonium from the Powerpuff Girls
Tom Kane.
My man Tom Kane. ❤
I like to think that Cyborg's "I'm half robot" line in Troq was him not wanting to bum out Starfire by exposing her to Earth racism in addition to the Space racism (Spacism?) she was already experiencing.
Never thought about it like that before, but its 100% something Cyborg would do. Great interpretation of that line.
This is one of the reasons why this Teen Titans is way better than Teen Titans Go. They give such good lessons like this
Val-Yor is so interesting to me. Heroes are created to represent someone's ideals, so the idea of prejudice or negativity towards a certain group doesn't immediately come to mind. But that's just how some people are; they can be great in some ways and terrible in others.
I just realized his name is close to vulgar
@@mangareader7474 His name is more meant to be close to the word "Valor".
Why do I have a feeling that some of his people didn't like him
@@brandonvortex995 I have a weird feeling that most of his people have similar views to him.
If there’s a job where I can play video games all day then I’d take it in a heartbeat
Same
Become a top streamer. So easy right? :p
From the thumbnail I thought it was Captain Atom too
Tough lesson in life, some people's minds can't be changed no matter how wrong they are. Yet, there are people who can't accept that and want to destroy the lives of those who in their minds don't have the right thinking; not realizing that they're becoming the very thing they hate.
These are some of my favorite episodes of the show. The employee of the month, I can so relate back when I got my first job. Troq the alien N word
Don’t know if anybody already answered, but Beast Boy’s real name is actually Garfield
Thats why i love this show
22:33 Anyone who doesn't like Starfire is my Nemesis!
I, too, love Starfire!
The thing I like about the Trog episode is that it's would've been very easy to make Val Yor secretly an evil villain who'd backstab the Titans. He could've been lying the whole time and had no redeeming qualities. But he wasn't. He was legitimately a hero that saved many lives across the galexy, was super strong and a pretty cool guy. But that didn't make him a good person. It's easy to think people with bad prejudices are openly just going to be horrible to everyone and be unlikable by default, but that's often not how it works. And I'm glad the show depicted that.
Back when social messaging was done right.
All Cyborg had to do was say *"of course I do",* and the moment would've hit so much harder 😅
In more ways than one.
i don"t disagree
he would have to give a reason to his answer of "of course I do" , and him saying because he's black wouldn't make any sense to star, as she is A, an alien, and B, has seen many people and races of all colors.
@@leviathan1082 If he simply said “I do” with a weathered voice I feel like that would have been enough.
@@PopeDuwang that could also work as that response wouldn't warrant a follow-up response.
It's very good that Cyborg was eating the newfu leader. And Starfire is very amazing and very strong.
I think Newfu is Carl from Jimmy Neutron. I can hear him saying, "Jimmy's mom..."
8:25 Yakko Warner!
*THIS👏🏽 EPISODE👏🏽*
This was one of the best episodes. It directly reference real life racism. I love how they had Cyborg say “I’m half robot.” Even though the audience knows exactly what he wanted to say.
Also shoutout to Jason for using the word “woke” correctly. Unlike other reactors like Tyrone Magnus who use it as a bigotry gateway
I feel he didn’t say that because star wouldn’t understand it as color isn’t a problem in space just species
You don't get episodes like that anymore on modern cartoons
This was back when cartoons weren't afraid to show real messages!
That's what I loved about this show,it has soul and tackles real issues unlike The Baby version called Go
No I really feel like half robot works better because all because he has a certain skin color it doesn’t mean he would be accepted
Woke is a bad thing though. It makes everything feel like it's racist and wrong to ridiculous extents that they bring up crap that was over a hundred years ago like it's still happening. Woke is toxic at best and just creates such a poor way of thinking about things. There's certain ways you should do things and being woke definitely isn't it. This episode wasn't woke though and t's how you should tackle racism with an actual good message and it did so in such a perfect way. Spread positivity, not negativity. Hate breeds hate, no matter what kind it is. Love and positivity can do the same if people would just do it this way but it's sadly much easier to hate and understand it.
I love the idea that the aliens contacted the cows and the cows were like “sure, but you gotta take us out of the food chain”. And it was a good plan up until the Source said they were gonna blow up the planet 😂😂😂
33:51 woke in the old school subtle, nuanced, profound, non preachy shamey divisive treat the audience like idiots way. The good way, that children internalize without even knowing it.
Something I as an adult today can really appreciate, this show deserves all the flowers.
The Troq episode is actually not woke, at least not in the modern definition. Once they found out he was Racist towards Star, they still worked with him to finish the mission he was doing because it was for the good of the galaxy and such, he was technically a "good guy hero" character, but he also happened to be a Racist asshole. This show did what you *should* do with racism. Call it out, tell them to change, or leave. This is a very nuanced and well written approach to the situation.
If this was made nowadays, as soon as he called Star a slur, everyone would have immediately turned on him, beat the shit out of him, and finished the mission themselves, then expelled him from Earth, in an attempt to show how worthless and inept all racists are, instead of it just being a negative character trait.
The way the show handled it is much better than it would have been if modern "woke" people had written the episode.
33:28 Y'all don't come back now, ya hear?!
The fastfood manager sounds like the Professor from Powerpuff Girls
Nice episode!!!😊
Beast boy in the moped is a fooly cooly reference if anyone knows it 😂 13:51 and beast boy is wearing harukos outfit
13:27 The alien tofu is voiced by Rob Paulsen. He's well-known in the 90s and 2000's, like the shows Animaniacs, The Mask: The Animated Series, Jimmy Neutron, Fairly Oddparents, and TMNT (1988).
He also voiced Jack Fenton
1987 Raph
Love this show 😂
I do have issues with how the titans treated Val Yor at the end. It's not east for someone to change their views so him moving in the right direction should have been celebrated but instead the titans demanded immediate change. As a result, he ended up reversing himself and just lumping humans in with tameranians
It’s not that they demanded immediate change, Starfire didn’t respond positively to Val Yor complimenting her while still backhanding her people. And since Starfire wasn’t happy, the Titans weren’t happy.
Plus, NOBODY (much less all 4 people) is going to have much patience for someone who’s been hurtful to their friend for the whole trip.
And I think Val Yor likely didn’t care about being better, I think he was just trying to smooth things over with the other Titans because they were upset with him. And let’s face it, lumping in Earthlings with your Tamaranian racism over a failed apology is immature for an adult, no matter how you slice it. He wasn’t changing anytime soon at that age.
@@DeathKnight5608 you can't expect immediate change. I'm actually somewhat paraphrasing shadydoorags from his review of that episode
@@illam9500 And at the same time, it’s not the Titans’ job to overlook or see to that change.
@@DeathKnight5608 any progress is good and if you are reversing that progress due to your attitude towards it then you are complicit. People have the views they do because of personal experience or how they were raised. You cannot expect immediate change on something so ingrained.
@@illam9500 I’ve said all I needed to say.
I thought Robin was independent of Batman here. I mean, he left Batman, established himself in Jump City, and helped form the Teen Titans. Wouldn't this mean Robin had to find his own way? Not to mention, Batman did train him in science and all. So, Robin probably had to make his new glider suit like Cyborg built his car. I mean, Titans Tower is homemade. Also, wasn't Cyborg's dad a prominent scientist himself? Someone who is familiar with Comic Books please educate me.
6:29 Professor Utonium!
Beast Boy’s real name is Garfield Mark Logan.
I just realized the reason cyborg feels how star feels is because I think he sees her as one of his people after all she is black coded
not to judge, but i don't think thats it, because racism about ones skin color wouldn't likely make sense in starfires eyes, and though that is likely where he would have gone with that, he used something that would make sense, like being part robot.
Starfire is not "black coded" lmao shut yo ass up
It's been 19 years since Troq aired and that shit STILL takes my break away. The grace and care they handled that episode with is stunning. They packed more nuance and wisdom into this one-off 20 minute cartoon episode than most adults manage to have when handling race issues today. I'm in awe.
The sad thing is that the Titans actually liked him at first 😞
Am I the only one who did wanted starfire to leave Val-yor to die? 😆😅
Not only earth has racism but the entire universe as well
You guys just gave me a theory about why Val Yor (and people like him) hate Tameranians. If they have similar abilities, such as flying and laser eyes, maybe their hatred stems from competition and fighting for resources. Not that that justifies anything of course, but it would explain why one group would be bitter towards the others. Though, considering Starfire's backstory involves being sold into slavery, they also seem to also be victims of colonialization.
im so sad the flying robin outfit never came back
I feel like Beast Boy has done so much to protect the Earth at this point and he should've gotten that moped at the end of Employee of the Month. It seems like this particular was done in classic way with the aliens controlling people through their stuff and creating human doppelgangers for cover up.
It's so weird and cool at the same that Earth was in danger because of freaking alien tofu and army of Bobs. I think the episode would've been more interesting if Newfu controlled Titans and people who ate their burgers pressuring Beast Boy either to eat meat or tofu.
Well, Troq is heavy and legendary episode, what can I say. I like that the show represents heroes who can just be selfish douchebags working for fame telling there are people who simply cannot and wouldn't want to change their disrespectful ways. I don't understand why people would complain about Titans being cold to Val-Yor at the end, he totally deserved judgment from the team for mocking and hurting their team member and friend.
Starfire and Cyborg dialoge is still amazing. It definitely proves Teen Titans is a show not so about great complicated villians or epic multi-part stories, but relatable flawed characters and how they respond to things happening with them. As one person said "Teen Titans teaches you to care about its characters and it teaches you to care about you". That's why Teen Titans is phenomenal and sadly often overlooked in its messages by stuff like Batman:The Animated Series just because it looks childish on the cover.
You would say, the show itself also experienced being called "Troq" at its time.
P.S How could I forget Beast Boy drooling over "Hot Rides". To me the best sex jokes are hidden jokes and Teen Titans succeeds in that wonderfully
Poor Starfire she didn't deserve this at all I love her so much 😭🥺 Robin would have kicked his ass.
I know Robin and his “daddy’s money” is a running joke, but who is Cyborg’s supplier? No way Cyborg built his own high-tech car and installed a proton cannon into it with junkyard scraps.
The first one was Beast Boi dream %100, the second one woke as hell 😳
I like when they reference Courage tho ☺️
The second one I feel is not woke, it was a message that did not come up often especially in 2005 when it was released. It provided a very insightful message about that problem in society. Static Shock has an episode that tackles racism and it's a great episode of how realistic it is and how to deal with it . Nowadays things are so woke that it's being shoved down our throats everywhere we go; either through sexuality or Race, we got it, we don't need to be reminded everywhere we go.
I wouldn't conclude the second woke these moderns ahowdont do it like teen titans and static shock can
Yeah, Val-Yor IS pretty much a design-only … racist adaptation of Captain Atom XP
Thank the God wall. I say it two he did seem like Captain Atom
Employee of the month is one of my personal favorites and I think it’s one of the best
I love the fooly cooly reference with the moped and beast boy dressed as haruko 😂
The episode Traq is a very good episode it teaches people that even though people are mean to you there are people that will defend you and acceped you for who you are and that is what matters.
I really hated Val-Yor so much and I wished Starfire would get her revenge and take him out he should have joined a specific group.
He's a racist who judges her by race
Take him out for just being racist?
@@plantcrone9662no the fact he did much more then be racist he literally wanted her to die in space and grinned about it when he thought she did
Val Yor is a jerkface of how he mistreated Starfire. I really hate racist characters.
Starfire getting revenge would defeat the entire point she tried to make by saving Val Yor.
“You may not value my life, but I still value yours.”
Hatred and revenge is not Starfire’s way.
Plus, revenge would have been a distasteful way to deliver Starfire’s wise, mature message at the end.
His head turning into a burger🍔😂 7:43
Starfire Really Should Have Left Val Yor To Die Instead of Saving His Sorry A**.
I agree. But starfire is just too kind and pure to do that. That’s why she will always be 10 times better than Val-yor 😊
8:57 I just got me a PS5 last week, and it was AWESOME! It was a Marvel's Spider-Man 2 PS5 bundle. Money well spent😁
I suggest next series be static shock
33:17 Val Yor is a real jerk who called starfire a trog.
loved it please continue I need my raven episodes
6:19 Vegans worse nightmare
MOO-YAH!!!!
The episode with....VAL-YOR!!!😡😡😡
The worst part about having someone like Val yor as a superhero is that him being the way he is only makes it easier to hate him and that character in particular is easier to hate than villains. Specially the world ending ones like trigon and brother blood. Sure trigon attempted to destroyed all humanity but not one single race and even though it s true that brother blood played favorites when it came to his students. what he valued was their talent and skills. He didnt judge others based on race.
Guys don't forget teen titans is DC if you were thinking of a marvel character in troq then you would be wrong
Starfire has at least one dress 👗 lol
32:32 You'd better accept her help!
Can we talk about how we went from space tofu episode to racist Val Yor like lol but episode 6 message is just too legit cause literally you could be like starfire and save their life and they would still be that way to who you are and your people like if that episode didn't get awards that's bs
6:23 IT'S MEATASTIC

I thought they got paid being being heroes
Watch the TEEN TITANS GO?
It’s a bad reboot, but it’s also very funny
I'm going to be honest to the majority with you but "Employee of the Month" was the worst Teen Titans episode compared to the majority who detested "Every Dog has his Day" and "Fractured".
As much as this was another Beast Boy centric and a silly episode I felt really bad for Beast Boy even though he was the one who "Scooby-Doo this crap" to save the day, plus the plot was lame and the ending felt *VERY* anticlimactic when Cyborg ate the Evil Tofu.
Personally, If I was in a room and I had a choice choosing two episodes from Fractured, Every Dog has his Day and the "Evil Tofu" episode and I had to choose two, I would watch the former two episodes over the "Evil Tofu" episode.
So Funniest Teen Titan episodes from most favorite to least favorite:
1. "Fractured"
2. "Revolution"
3. "Bunny Raven"
4. "Mad Mod"
5. "Mother May-Eye"
6. "Every Dog has his Day".
7. "Employee of the Month" (Evil Tofu episode)
The whole episode is a fooly cooly refrence with the moped lots of anime refrences
Please react to foster home for imaginary friends
If I may give a suggestion, after you guys finish the show and the movie that takes place after the show, I really recommend you guys react to the film Deathstroke: Knights and Dragons because I think it will give you a really different perspective on Slade. It's not connected to the show but it's still worth watching.
