      Hey Mr Manley, what with Elite's 30th coming up this year, maybe you'll have time to do an Elite retrospective on your excellent channel. Somebody has to teach all these kids some history :-)

      Saw your SC dog fighter module video this evening. If asked I would have thought ED had the $40million budget not SC. This is quality.

      7BeAsT9 I know, but I still feel like there is a huge gap for someone to get into the details about the games, how they played, why they were ground breaking (mostly in the case of the first two) - and so many people saying they never heard of the franchise before when they talk about E:D, I kind of find that stunning, especially in the case of gaming press. To me, Elite is like Mario, how did people miss out on it? Why did it vanish, etc.

    Being a person who likes Star Wars for their sound effects, this game is mesmerizing to my ears. I hope they add more stuff like it.
    And regarding console ports, I think there is a reason why Elite is not quite as detailed as it can be, simply so that consoles wouldn't have much of a problem running the game. Also from a business point of view, console porting will make the company millions. So it makes sense.

    FrontierDevelopments, you've done a fantastic job on this and it looks absolutely stunning! I've been following the development videos even though I'm not a gamer any more. I was there back in the day, playing Elite from 5.25" floppy disk on my BBC Micro Model B and feeling shaky and exhilarated after completing the Thargoid mission. The question is, should I buy this game when it comes out, and can a guy nearing his mid-forties who hasn't played games on anything more powerful than an 8-bit computer actually handle a game of this complexity, and commit to getting good at it when the bathroom needs decorating? I feel a mid-life crisis coming on.

    • @jinjatube
      @jinjatube 10 років тому +2

      Yes, you can handle it. You can bimble about in single-player all you like. There is no pressure to join groups or PvP, unless you want to. No one will mind if you crash into anything and everything while you work it all out. The community is very friendly and helpful, and I am pretty sure it will, in general, stay that way. Elite has always been about enjoying your own journey. Right now, you will need a reasonably good machine, though, and it's still in Beta, so collect your commander badge whenever you're ready. (BTW, many of us in the alpha and beta stages played the original too... back in 1984 or thereabouts)

      @Nic0maK 10 років тому +2

      it's the sequel of the elite series, which was planned years ago, at least as far back as in 2002. X might have taken some inspiration from the previous elite games of 1984(elite),93(elite 2 : frontier) and 95(Frontier : First Encounters) though ^^. ED is Elite 4 in many ways, the other games are so far older now that a "4" in the title would be a bit pointless.
      the 2 frontier games had already a fullly proceduraly generated galaxy, flatter yes but not so small, even compared to the one of ED, it was just much more flat, and less accurate, yet 100billions systems in it already, and they even had landing on planets ;) which we'll have in one expansion for ED, post release.

      Half joking of course. It's likely that eeeeeventually you'll get a port. Unlike consoles where Sony and MS money hat devs to kepe their games to a single platform, on PC devs are free to move about as they please.
      So long as moving a port to consoles doesn't affect the PC game, I'm all for it.

      I vaguely remember David Braben saying that he'd like to release Elite Dangerous at some point on consoles. Elite Dangerous uses the Cobra engine that was used in the Xbox One game Zoo Tycoon so engine wise there's no reason. I currently play the game on the PC with an Xbox pad (and voice attack) and I've got a joystick so it's not only viable control wise I prefer it. I'd say the only thing would be time (as they've still got to release the game and the expansions on PC and Mac) and if Frontier think it's worth it (i.e. enough people will play it). By making Frontier aware that as a console player you want it you are increasing the chance of it happening.

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley 10 років тому +6

      George Pearson I think you forget that one of the finest ports of the original elite was for the NES, no need to dumb it down.
      The controls all work fine on a gamepad, and the PS4/XBone have the hardware muscle to run what we see.

      ***** The oxygen comes from inside the ship?

    • @Nic0maK
      @Nic0maK 10 років тому +8

      Yes just because it's space doesnt mean there's no fire, but it has to mean anything that is necessary for it, oxygen included, has to come with the ship.
      But anyway, it's a game, gameplay and fun will come first, before realism, to a degree. such choices are intended, epecially if the reallistic approach has been tested and did not feel good enough for a game.

    • @kmcarchive8288
      @kmcarchive8288 10 років тому

      No fire in space!!! ...Now, I'm sorry i had to stoop to using THREE exclamation marks, but on this occasion i believe they're warranted. The vacuum of space would extract and dissipate all oxygen at such a high rate that the chain of reaction for combustion would be broken.
      ...It's also way too freaking cold.
      Still, it looks fecking awesome!

    • @SoanosBarcoded
      @SoanosBarcoded 10 років тому +3

      The developers have actually explained this, the sound is a simulated soundscape generated by the ship systems to provide aural feedback to the pilot, making it easier for the pilot to react to things such as incoming attacks.

      It depends where you live. 50 quid or 75 quid. It doesn't seem much different. But as an ex pat in the USA where 1$ often has the equivalent spending power of 1 pound when you go to the shops, despite the exchange rate.
      Your suddenly talking the difference between $100 and $150 which seems like a lot. Having said that, I just got the beta this weekend and am not disappointed. But for many people the difference will seem like a lot more than 20 bucks.

    • @ringosis
      @ringosis 10 років тому +3

      The beta is deliberately expensive to discourage people buying it just to try it out when it's not finished. It's not a demo, it's not meant to be a way to play the game early, they want beta testers.

      If you backed Elite already on the 15th of July if you want to upgrade and gain access to the beta you should receive a discount on this based on your current pledge level. The discount should be calculated at checkout so check this before following through with the payment.

      Elias Reiniat In Star Citizen you only need to be around 30-40 dollars for everything, including 2 whole games Star Citizen Open Universe and the Single/co-op player story game Squadron 42. That's it for good. You can happily play and achieve everything without paying a single penny more. I backed Elite for the initial game at launch and that's as far as I am willing to go, to have to keep paying more for alpha / beta or expansions is a joke, but that is just my opinion.

    • @marcopolo3001
      @marcopolo3001 10 років тому +4

      TRON Nobody is forcing you to buy alpha and beta. Just as nobody is forcing me to pay for extra ships in SC. But people still do it. They are just different business models. You can hate on it but at the end people want a good space sim and if they are passionate about it they will pay the prohibitive costs in owning an Idris or 10 expansion packs, so be it. No point in scoffing at such things.
      My opinion is that ED is free to do what they want if it gets them to the finished product. SC was also unashamed in their money grabbing approach and no one cried bloody murder for it. It was generally accepted as a means to guarantee the success of a good product. I really don't understand why some gamers don't get that games cost money to make, and good games cost a good amount of money to produce, period.

      Over all I agree although obviously ED is being completed at a much faster rate.
      The big difference for me is I could afford to back Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous is far too expensive and the planet side aspect of ED is going to be sold as an expansion instead of included with the game which was the final nail in the coffin for me.

    • @Pecisk
      @Pecisk 10 років тому +7

      Really? SC currently is vaporware with few modules to play with :) You will be able to compare these games only when SC comes out, and that's two years down the road - if CR is lucky.

    • @Adenzel
      @Adenzel 10 років тому +3

      SC is certainly not vaporware, and people can compare these games at any point they please. So far we've seen ED developed incredibly quickly, it looks slick and appears to have very few bugs considering how early the game is ib development. Hell it's all happened so fast you might think they'd done most of the back breaking work before even starting the kickstarter.
      SC is taking a very different approach in so many ways. They also appear to be making a much more detailed intricate game from what I've seen. They have first person walking around of ships and stations from the begining, the physics of ship flight done with 'realism' that I haven't seen on that scale.
      I just think it's a shame that ED priced themselves so high that a good chunk of people won't be able to afford it. They would probably have made a lot more money on the kickstarter option too. $35 is what I paid for alpha access to SC. ED was asking over $100 and still is.

      not only are they referencing the old games, but they're designed practically. Futuristic spaceships would most likely be simple, aerodynamic shapes like this.

    • @Vennytube
      @Vennytube 10 років тому +8

      Kevin Zambonian That makes no sense at all, aerodynamic (as the name refers to "aero") it's useful in atmospheric flight where you need the resistance of air, in space three is no such thing what makes your argument invalid besides, the ships aren't simple, they are ugly and bland! Terrible art concept and it's not a matter of taste, they are just poorly designed.

    • @X-Ray_Fox
      @X-Ray_Fox 10 років тому +23

      Vennytube The atmospheric flight will be implemented in the future. And everyone has their own opinion but I prefer the design of these ships to those of star citizen for example.

    • @Vennytube
      @Vennytube 10 років тому +5

      Cotrale35 Saying you prefer ED ship design to SC ship design it's the same of saying you prefer a kids drawing of a mountain to a picasso painting...and no, this isn't a matter of personal taste, it's an obvious fact! In regards of the atmospheric flight, even though it will be implemented, a SPACEship is more designed to fly in SPACE than in a planets atmosphere, wich may not even exist in most of the planets btw, so his argument is still invalid.

    It's funny seeing my (the younger) generation in disbelief about the numbers in the video and the sheer scale of this game. I wasn't around when the original was released, but my dad was an avid fan and I enjoyed playing it on an old BBC micro. Considering what they managed to do on that little machine, it comes as no surprise to me that they're doing similarly epic stuff on modern hardware. I don't think a lot of younger gamers appreciate how groundbreaking the original game was.
    Also, David Braben said in a documentary that the original game could have potentially had several times as many star systems as there were in the released version, but the publishers told them to reduce it as they feared 'Gamers wouldn't believe the numbers'.
    I've backed this and Star Citizen; I see them as very different beasts, but I am a bit dubious as to when SC will be released. They promised the dog fighting module in December, and when did we get it? I think we might see some more of those delays, but considering the money they have, I hope they pull themselves together.
    And to the people moaning about the ship designs, I think there would be uproar if they didn't hark back to the iconic designs of the original game. I for one love the utilitarian aesthetic; too many poncy ships is unrealistic, these are industrial designs that favour function over glossy windows.
    Can't wait for July 29th.

    Elite: Dangerous seems so much more impressive in terms of scope and the way that players can affect the economy and combat of the universe. I am a sucker for sandbox games in a REAL sandbox like the galaxy with lots of ships to play with. Granted, I've never played a Frontier game before, and I hope my computer can run this so it can be my first. Constant player exposure, for all intents and purposes open game for backers, and the thrill of barreling into a space station with illegal goods moving faster than the turrets can track you, with no power and no lateral motion!
    Scott Manley, you showed me the light that is Elite: Dangerous, and boy am I glad I saw it! I want my Eagle and I want it yesterday!

    -Is there/will there be any incentive for large scale fleet battles?
    -Is there any resource gathering? If so, do resources deplete giving incentive to fight over them?
    -Are there any player owned corporations, guilds, groups (whatever you want to call them) that take on new members?
    -Are there any player owned docking structures where your ships and items can be stored?
    -Is there any sort of P2P contract system? Is the market player driven or automated?
    -When your ship is destroyed, do have to buy a new one? If so, are there any that are going to be insanely expensive?
    Keep in mind that I'm referring to the way things currently are AS WELL as any planned additions. Even rumors. I've been surfing all over to find clear answers. Any and all answers are greatly appreciated.

      My answer is like 4 months late but ill do it anyway
      In conflict zones you have big group (maybe like 100-200 ships) of two factions fighting each other
      Yes, mining. And as far as i know, not really as they asteroid belts are moddeled 1:1 scale like everythign else
      Not yet, but they want to include something like that
      Not yet, but they want to implement small player owened asteroid bases
      Buy once, play for ever. Payd DLC is planned though. Players can affected the market but the AI ships drive it.
      Yes, but you will only pay 5% of the original price due to your insurnace (also includes equipment)

Can you leave your ship and explore the Stations? Can you move around your own ship? Can you land on planets, can you move around on planets? If your ship has a crew can you assign them tasks? such as manning the turrets and engaging targets while you maneuver the ship? Can you hire crew of various qualities? any answers would be appreciated ^_^
