I am here 9 months after you posted this. I to have owned game since launch and even got to do the short beta they did in advance of launch. I also get very hyped when I see this trailer even now.

Yeah, still love it. It's insane that the graphics still look so good even today considering how much is the cobra engine dated now.

I totally agree, the combat and flight sequences does not even come close to being this smooth.
I still like the mechanic though and you can certainly feel the difference between ships weight and the gear, and I really, really like, for example, how the engine sounds (outside of FSD) and cockpit interior differ between all the ships!
But despite that it´s a great game, with professions, factions, upgrading your ship aswell as being a fascinating experience in itself (I fucking love space!), the huge amount of dead time you spend IRL by just flying from one location to the next - either for a mission or during exploration over several systems - becomes incredibly mind-numbing.

Love it when the cobras and such come into view of the 'condas, and there is a pause as the pilots go "Oh shit." Then the anaconda's tear them to shreds.

If only the gameplay was like the trailer and the ships maneuvers were even 1/8 as how it was shown
You can do more advanced maneuvers in game than in trailer, the big difference here is these ships can decelerate extremely quickly, and accelerate fast independently of boost. The rest of what's shown mobility wise can be done in game with engineering.

But the colony in space looked just like Elysium

As someone who looked forward to this greatly, I'll say this: In its current form it's a solid framework.
Just don't think that climbing around on a bunch of steel beams is going to be as fun as the amusement park they say they're gonna build inside.
Some things DESPERATELY need COMPLETE REWORKING. Namely the market, which is atrocious to say the least. Helping to give players some abatement from that sense of loneliness if they so choose would be nice as well.
to everyone complaining about the trailer being unrepresentative of the actual game...so what, almost every major game is just as guilty of that! and as for the quick backwards turn the cobra does, that is possible, maybe not as fast, but you can turn back and keep going in one direction, and quite quickly if you know how: flight assist off, flip your ship up, spin, have good engines

Try flying a fer-de-lance with fully engineered engines without flight assist, you'll find it not far off that trailer in terms of how insanely fast you can turn to blow the face off whatever was trying to attack you, asides from that the warp dynamic, that would be nice, that and actually being able to fight around a starport without the starport going insane and destroying everything around it lol

A lot of times, artists became even more creative through drugs. That's how a lot of Marvel comics were written in the 70's so the same case may be applied here.
Those screens don't just apply to just the trailer but the whole game. So the actual game has drug references in it somewhere

I've been playing Elite Dangerous off and on since September of 2014 (when it was still in beta). I enjoy the game (despite its near-vertical learning curve), but this is the first time I've ever seen the trailer. If I'd bought the game based on this trailer, I would have asked for my money back. WHAT were they THINKING?!

Most inaccurate trailer ever, but man would I love the ability to do near instant short range 'jumps' during combat.
I find it kind of funny that people don't actually realize the ambition behind this game. Yes, I know that even halfway through Season 2 there's not really much gameplay, but I say that your expectations, people, are quite unrealistic. Also, this is not your action-crammed AAA-game like Call of Duty or something, so please get over it, and stop expecting it to be. Trying to cram every single idea that was talked about into the actual release (scientifically-accurate atmospheric flights, first-person hunting on Earth-Like worlds, EVA activity are just some off the top of my head) is quite literally impossible, and Frontier knew that. This is exactly why Star Citizen is having so much trouble now - they're just overwhelmed with the amount of stuff they have to cram into their release game. And I say that it is a good thing that ED is progressing at the rate it does now (still wish it was a bit faster, though), because that way they actually HAVE time to polish every little aspect of the game and then release them, one by one. Otherwise, such development would take SO LONG, it would put Half-Life 3 to shame.
That said, considering Season 3 would most likely be the walking around and station interiors, first 20 seconds of this video might as well be copy-pasted to Season 3 trailer, when that comes :D

The only thing from the trailer you can't do is fight massive pitched battles right outside stations...once you're in that 4km no-fire zone, you're gonna get targeted by system security if you start opening fire on people. The stations, planets and ships in the trailer are exactly what they look like in the game, with the exception of that first scene of the pilots boarding their ships, which is a cinematic.
DaBaDaMaMaN Why does everyone have to bring up SC? If you want to wait until 2017 or later for SC, that's great, but Elite isn't even trying to be Star Citizen, and unlike SC it's out NOW, and you can have fun playing it.
GozerTheGozerian Star Citizen is the grandchild of Wing Commander Privateer, Elite Dangerous is the grandchild of the originator of its entire genre, the orignal Elite on the BBC Micro. They are very different beasts and people need to stop comparing them.
+GozerTheGozerian Graphics-wise the game is possibly even sharper than in the trailer, gameplay-wise though I would say that this scene comes close to false advertisement, because when flying the ships it comes nowhere near to being this smooth and gracile.
In game; try catching cargo in the middle of a dogfight. Or why not fly and then 180 to drive in reverse and shot down targets right behind you - during a high speed chase around a station I might add.
'Not actual game footage' was shown briefly at the beginning and then they basically show an entire trailer that consists of everything you won't be able to do in Elite:Dangerous. For those interested in actually walking up to your ships and pulling those crazy Top Gun maneuvers I would recommend checking out Star Citizen instead.
You'd have to be high if you think cinematic trailers are a perfect reflection of gameplay.

I just find it unfortunate to see a trailer that has absolutely nothing that will be present in Elite:Dangerous. Hence my recommendation of Star Citizen as the Hangar module and Arena Commander effectively allow people to do everything the E:D trailer was showing. :)

The Hangar Module and Arena Commander already allow you to do everything this trailer is showing off. The main difference being that in Elite:Dangerous people won't be able to do it; unlike in Star Citizen which was made to do just that. That was all I'm trying to say. Elite will most likely be a great spacegame, but it simply will not be what they show in that trailer; that's Star Citizen. :)

Most trailers are prerendered. And actually, the game has been in development for quite a while. Beta started on july 2014, and I've been playing constantly since September-ish? It's actually pretty good, to be honest. You can watch a "let's play" video on YT and see for yourself! I personally enjoy it quite a bit.
There've released plenty of in-game trailers already. This is the only cinematic available.

Seriously I don't know where you get your info from but be sure to thank them for making you look like a fool.
To those people who want this to remain PC exclusive, let me ask you something. Do you want people to not experience this? Yes, I'm a PC gamer, but mostly because I don't feel like putting up with the politics of the consoles. I think the concept of exclusivity needs to die, because it arbitrarily limits what examples of the art that is video games that people get to enjoy. Now, if this does go cross-platform, I hope it's done properly, because honestly a bad port of the modern adaptation of the first real space sim would be crippling not just to it, but the genre as a whole.
From what I have read and heard on interviews, consoles like Xbox 1 and PS4 just can't handle a massive game like this. The Galaxy is big in this game, so much to explore and the things that are coming for this game in future patches like landing on planets (like all of them in the game) will just not be possible on consoles.

The reason PC gamers don't want their games ported to consoles is because of how many initially "PC exclusives" suffered from deep consolitis, i.e., how the developers made sure to tailor the game for eventual console release to the detriment of actually making the best possible pc game. This usually results in terrible interfaces and stunted controls (which usually involves the game bending over backwards to have only a dozen or so player actions so they can be mapped to a controller). This means for example that simulation games are extremely rare.
People just want some pure pc games.

Haven't played this game, but the concept of a huge open galaxy would be awesome to apply to a Star Wars game! Imagine playing as a smuggler or bounty hunter during the time of the Galactic Empire, barley escaping the Empire in epic space battles, being hired by the Empire to hunt down rebel targets, maybe helping the Rebels fight against the Empire directly or indirectly, and of course being able to complete the Kessel run in less then 12 parsecs! You would be able to have your own ship and customize it, be able to walk around in it and have friends join you on it, and visit your favorite planets you know from the movies. A game like that would be amazing!

Well PbPomper I disagree. Every trailer is made to look good that has been like that forever, has nothing to do about being ashamed, remember this game is crowd funded, why would they be ashamed when millions of players backed this game up. I do agree it often doesn't live up to the actual game but I have to say after I bought the game online after seeing the trailer, I like the game a lot more then what the trailer showed me. The game is massive, the sounds in the game, the atmosphere, the gameplay all is so great. If you don't like an aspect of the game for example you don't want to explore, you just want to kill stuff, you can totally ignore exploring and just do PvP etc. you are not forced to do anything in this game, You are free to do what the hell you want which makes it better then most mmo's where you farm, grind and level the whole time.

Ya, I got that, it's the way it's presents the game. I get there's no game-play in it, but it's supposed to be representing what the game will be like to an extent, and it fails at this massively. The combat isn't anything like this, it's much slower, in fact the whole game is a much slower version than this trailer.
I just think it's a bit misleading. They should have done a trailer "in game" like they did before to show people a much more accurate depiction of the game their getting.

Awesome trailer. ED will really hit mainstream once they finnish/release the ability to exit ships.
I know its *all* planned. Zero G, FPS, planet/station, etc exploration. However....
Just the initial ability to get up from your seat, and even walk around your ship,
or to a vendor / contact in a station.
Will increase the immersion of the experience 100%.
And then more and more in time.
this might not be what it looks like when playing the game, but it certainly is what it feels like.

Don't get me wrong. I love ED. I absolutely love this game. But I only wish the combat would really be like this.

Such a good game AND Trailer, thought sometimes I wish the action would a bit faster in-game, but too fast and the game cannot be played, so it is acceptable :P

Where's the hours of sifting through menus?
Would you need a good joystick to play this game properly? (I'm thinking of buying it for my birthday perhaps, and I want to know if I should get a joystick or something as well.)
I've been playing with a mouse and it's alright, difficult to get used to cos it's pretty accurate and sensitive, but I've seen many people say the game is a lot better with a joystick. I'd recommend playing the game for a while first to see if you really want to invest in a joystick, and if you eventually do; go for a two module one like the Saitek X52 (pro or regular) you'll get waaaay more comfort from not having to keep your arms together all the time. And for that extra touch (and an extra dent in the bank account) grab an Oculus Rift, that and the joystick and some good surround sound headphones you'll get ultimately immersed.
