      Maddie Paige Hey Maddie, how old are you or what grade are you in? Just starting or been playing awhile now? I absolutely loved it. I had a 2nd chance to play. In 2005 I think, I was in a brass quintet, it was just for fun and fun is what it was. I hadn't played for quite a few years and it felt so good to do it again. Unfortunately we disbanded in 2010. Keep playing!! One "girl" to another!! Playing the trumpet was one of my favorite things to do.

      Maddie Paige Good job Maddie, keep playing. It's a fun instrument once you get into it. I was frustrated for the first few months I played but by then I was starting to catch up to the guys who'd been playing for a year already. Makes me wish I could go back in time. Have fun with it!!!

      ***** Hey Blue, I'm a former player, wish I was still playing but oh well. Give Dr. Jesse McGuire a listen. I heard him at a NASCAR race and an NFL game. I can't seem to find my favorite, he does some cool little flourishes at just the right moment. When he goes up into that upper register, I have goosebumps like crazy. I really miss playing.

      My first jazz album was the soundtrack to his "For love or country". The only thing that sucks about getting inspiration from high note players is that you can get stuck there and not work on the technique of the horn. It happened to me, for too many years I was only concerned with my sound.

    This musician, Arturo Sandoval is a giant in the professional world. It is very poignant to note that (many of) the viewers of this video and the thousands of Orange Bowl fans present on that day had no idea of the breadth of talent they were treated to. Every week people watch TV programs such as The Voice, and America's Got Talent and become hypnotized by the malaise. Advice to television producers: You need only roam around the practice halls of Berklee, Curtis, Juilliard, Eastman and other music citadels. Those places are blistering with serious talent. As a country, our appreciation of people who spend five and six hours a day for years honing their gifts is sorely neglected.

    There's something so unique about Arturo - in the lower register, it almost sounds like he's going to lose the pitch sometimes. It isn't the unwavering intonation that he shows when he gets up really high. When he gets up to the upper register, it's like the most crystal clear sound you've ever heard. Very interesting and fantastic musician.

    God I love listening to this when he goes up into that higher register. I only dreamed about doing that. I spent my high school years listening to Maynard Ferguson, Bill Chase, and Herb Alpert, all incredible musicians with a trumpet. I got to see Ferguson twice in high school. That was a long time ago.

      Dropping Bill Chase’s name, you obviously know your trumpet players.

    • @survivrs
      @survivrs 2 роки тому +1

      @@billpoindexter2113 I know the ones I like, I'll put it that way. Herb Alpert was the first one I heard. I was only 9 or 10 at the time. In 6th grade, (a year behind my classmates), I began with lessons, and I'm a competitor, if it's something I really want, I go after it, so in 7th grade, I didn't like playing 3rd trumpet for anything. I worked my way to 2nd trumpet that year though. When we got rid of the upper classmen whose talents were quite good, I was finally playing 1st trumpet, and I swear that in 8th/9th and 11th/12th, our instructors loved picking on me and the guy who we always tried to outplay the other, so 1st and 2nd chair was like a swinging door all the time. They never picked on the other instruments, but I feel like it made me better, and since I was a girl, I let them know that a girl could hang with the boys. The trumpet players were always the first ones to the band room in high school and right away we went into the office, put on either Chase or Ferguson and we cranked those speakers until more people were filing in. I'm 62 now, and what I wouldn't give to still be able to play. Once in awhile I get it out, you gotta make sure those valves don't need oiling and that it doesn't need to be cleaned good. I love how shiny a silver Bach Strad looks. As for Chase, give me "Open up wide", "Livin in heat", "Hello groceries", "Handbags and gladrags" (my absolute favorite)!! and of course "Get it on". I had a hard time finding that album, but it's a miracle I didn't go deaf just from listening to them all as late at night as I could. I have all of that music on an ipod, and if I'm in my car by myself, I love to crank it up just like the old days.

      @@survivrs You know there are Chase live and tributes collections, I assume. Both are incredible. And, there are several clips of Chase here in UA-cam. Sound and quality are expectedly not great, but still cool to watch. I’m also 62, so you must be a 77 or 78 grad then. Ever play the Reno Jazz Festival back then?

    • @survivrs
      @survivrs 2 роки тому

      @@billpoindexter2113 I was a 77 grad, but no to the Reno Jazz Festival. I'm from Iowa, and not from the big cities who produced some incredible musicians who we got to know at state wide jazz festivals every year. I loved being chosen for honor bands because that was when you could really count on some hard music, and it was enjoyable to earn your chair. I just loved playing. I've come across some of the clips you've mentioned and unfortunately because of their age, the quality of sound isn't great but it's still good enough to keep my attention.

    For those who don't know....using the valves on a trumpet directs air through different tubes, therefore lengthening and shortening the horn, and helping a player hit the different notes. When you are up that high, the valves no longer matter. That is 100% the player, in this case controlling a squeal at a world class level. It is hard enough to control pitch when you're squealing, but the tone he managed while doing it was truly impressive. When he put the horn down you could see how exhausted he was. And the breath and preparation he took just before going for "Land of the free" had that "its go time" look to it.
