I adore Bob Newhart and loved especially his first TV show, The Bob Newhart Show, which I now catch on MeTV. It's my favorite show on that channel. I can't believe how young he appears to be here on this show. What a treat this is!!
Wow! I was born 14 days after this aired! Good, talented, clean entertainment hosted by Mr Class himself! The only downside is to think of all the damage people were bringing to themselves with all that smoking...
Born in 1960, my recollection of these is vague, which makes this trip down memory lane just that much sweeter and also profoundly moving, since the family l would have watched these with originally are now long gone. Thank you, uploader, for taking the time and trouble posting this and allowing me to revisit after so many years this world of true entertainment.
I loved the Hollywood Palace as a child, and I apparently still do. Thank you for posting this video--and thank you for including the commercials. I love these.
I remember watching this on Saturday nights when I was little. Unfortunately, we don't have the kind of talent today where you could watch a variety show. I even remember when Dominique by the singing nun was a hit and I was only 2 at the time.
Thanks for sharing this program. These programs are a lot of fun to watch. I was a child in the 60's and we had poor reception from our local ABC affiliate and I do not remember watching any of these. Thanks for letting us escape reality with fine entertainment.
Thank you for this. Hollywood Palace was a Saturday night staple in our house. My dad bought a color TV set so he could watch it in color. It was still in black and white. Lol!
Thank you for uploading all of these on UA-cam! I am the grandson of Grey Lockwood, the show's Director, and these are better than the old VHS tapes of episodes that I have. Thanks again! Cheers!
Some are in much better quality than others, just a matter of whatever I was able to scrounge up! Thanks for the comment-- I'm glad you found the channel. :) I bet your grandfather would be very pleased to know that these shows are still providing entertainment to a lot of people on a daily basis-- about 1,000 new views every day!
Noel, I read in a game show encyclopedia that your grandfather directed an obscure game show called "Take a Chance", hosted by Don Ameche, back in 1950. (He also directed "The Jan Murray Show" during its early 1960s run.)
The success of Contac is generally attributed to their tv ad campaign highlighting the “tiny time pills” inside the capsule. But it would never have happened without the smooth voice of Edward Binns, who brought the copy to life.
l used to get Bobby Van confused with Bobby Darin, but l was a little kid back in the early 60s. Boy, am l loving these: I intend to binge-watch this series in its entirety. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for uploading these shows , I don't know if they have ever been shown in the UK , I would have only been quite young but it is so good to be able to see them . There must be frustrations at times and it does take time and effort but I am sure I am not the only one that really appreciates it . Thank you again .
Gary's book, as well as other articles/books, did a lot of damage to Bing's reputation. But ever so slowly new information comes to light that show a lot of what was written about Bing was either exaggerated or completely false. It is wonderful that the false information is being corrected and this wonderful entertainer's reputation is being restored.
How fantastic were Bing and Gary. Both handsome, both talented and a great team. They would have been great in movies together. Love all the crosbys. Dixie was one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.
Thumbs up, Think about this Boomers, This aired two months post J.F.K. 's assassination . Look at Nancy Wilson's Jackie hair style . Thank-you you for taking me back 11 years old.
Glad you're enjoying them, Robert-- there are two new WMLs shows posted every day. You really must have been binge watching if you watched all the ones posted already!
Aaron R TV was schmaltzy like this for decades. I recall seeing awful variety shows still on TV when Sony invented the Trinitron, In the late 70's. The stuff took years to die off.
38:00 Nancy Wilson...Killing! Swinging hard and arrangement is not overwrought. GO NANCY! Great arrangement too! YEAH! I'd like to know who's it is...anyone know?
I loved these variety shows.A welcome addition to Sullivan show at the time.Apparently with abundance of talent -type shows now the format is still good.Entertainment then and now.
If you enjoy this comedy check out the Spike Jones show on Netflix. Its funny as hell. Once again thanks for posting all these wonderful Hollywood Palaces!!
I've seen a Kitchen Rich intro done by the Flintstones for their show...I never knew it became Keebler, or that there were three other bakeries marketing the brand.
I am really enjoying Gary's singing style and delivery. If only he had continued down this same journey in life. Perhaps then the old family memories that pained him might not have afflicted him so. I sort of rolled my eyes when I read Bing's kids had become singers, but I rolled them no more after actually listening to them. Talented kids. If Gary had had no talent Bing would not have permitted him such a prominent role on a show like this. I guess that was Bing's way of showing love. Who knows.
All of Bing's kids had talent and he gave them countless opportunities to make good careers in show business, it seems Gary especially. I think Gary's problem was that people were more interested in his father than him, and unfortunately he squandered the opportunities his father provided for him. When you see Bing in videos with his boys it is obvious he is very proud of them and even if he had trouble expressing his love for them he quite often gives them a rub on the shoulder or a pat on the back, which they have often said was his way of showing that he cared.
I'm really enjoying seeing these old shows when TV was real entertainment that had quality and was suited for the whole family. Thank you for posting them. Can you tell me anything about the band that played all those wonderful arrangements for every musical number?
Bing insisted his long-time conductor on radio, records, and TV specials- John Scott Trotter- lead the "PALACE" orchestra on the initial telecast. Trotter used some very good arrangers over the years........
It’s crazy how now in 2024…that same Hollywood Palace building is now the Avalon Night Club…which I go to from time to time, makes me wonder the many greats tht came to that same open space…and no one even knows it I was drunk once and I stumbled upon a picture with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis
Watching Nancy Wilson brings back memories of when she sported a moustache. In her early years it showed more in the colored TV shows. Glad she got rid of it. You can actually see it in this video clip if one looks closely. I still loved her and bought all of her recordings. I worked in a record store then.
Hello, I've enjoyed watching The Hollywood Palace ever since I've subscribed to your channel, and I wonder, how did you come across these tapes of this wonderful variety show the way they were actually shown on ABC?, and I really enjoy the commercials as well, I love this program and your channel so very much...thanks so very much.
I know that not all episodes are available, but would you have any way to get hold of Season 5 number 8? I was on that show as a child and would dearly love to see it in color. There is a short clip on UA-cam that someone filmed off of a TV set, but it doesn't match the quality you have here.
His first Christmas specials with his second family were part of the PALACE...and his connection with the show made have begun due to his signing to do a sitcom for ABC in the fall of 1964, which only ran a season.
Yes, this was a mid-season replacement.....for "THE JERRY LEWIS SHOW" (that bloated two-hour weekly "telethon", disguised as a "free-wheeling variety show"), originating from the same theater Jerry had staged his series from. And it was the first of 30 appearances Bing made as a guest host.
I have the book "The Worst TV Shows Ever," which listed "The Jerry Lewis Show" amongst them. While they gave its tortured history, the authors (Bart Andrews and Brad Dunning) never mentioned how ABC revamped the theatre after they and Lewis parted company and started up "The Hollywood Palace." (Interesting how Jerry's erstwhile partner Dean Martin hosted a few editions of "THP" before his own NBC variety show started.)
Cigarette advertisers (beginning with LIggett & Myers) LOVED placing ads on the show. There were no shortage of tobacco commercials....even with Consolidated Cigar's "El Producto" and "Muriel" ads later on.
I adore Bob Newhart and loved especially his first TV show, The Bob Newhart Show, which I now catch on MeTV. It's my favorite show on that channel. I can't believe how young he appears to be here on this show. What a treat this is!!

This was life before the Beatles....No wonder they were so popular!
Aaron R TV was schmaltzy like this for decades. I recall seeing awful variety shows still on TV when Sony invented the Trinitron, In the late 70's. The stuff took years to die off.
“I Want To Hold Your Hand’ was rocketing up the charts when this show aired

Once again thanks for posting all these wonderful Hollywood Palaces!!
Don't miss this one, too, with the legendary Harpo Marx: Harpo Marx on The SpikeJones Show (Jan 9, 1954)
I have been looking for these episodes!
I've seen a Kitchen Rich intro done by the Flintstones for their show...I never knew it became Keebler, or that there were three other bakeries marketing the brand.
I wonder what became of The Hardy Family? I loved their performance and had never heard of them before today.
Variety is making a comeback with programmes like "Britain's Got Talent".
And voice actor Dick Tufeld announcing: it does NOT get any better than this!😄
And all these years I thought his name was Dick Tufeld Speaking
How cool,,,,i know just the person who loves this stuff,,,,,

Gary's book in 1983 revealed the dark side of Bing.

I used to watch a show that aired on Sunday nights. I remember Sid Caesar being on there. Is this the variety show I saw?

Thanks for posting@ Hollywood Palace. Bing Crosby hosted the most episodes (33 I believe) Was he an uncredited Executive Producer?

Kitchen Rich Cookies were the forerunner to Kibbler.
It's the Young Caucasians!
(plus one)
Three cigarette ads...nine days later the Surgeon General's report declaring an unequivocal link between smoking and health problems was released.
Cigarette advertisers (beginning with LIggett & Myers) LOVED placing ads on the show. There were no shortage of tobacco commercials....even with Consolidated Cigar's "El Producto" and "Muriel" ads later on.
And seven years later tobacco ads disappeared on tv and radio
Is there any possibility of posting season 1 episode 3?? I am in touch with one of the guests on that episode who would love to see it!! Thanks.
Hi, If you want to see this and more pilots, please check out pilottv.net also on roku.

35:47- 36:26: 30 second "station identification" break
That all started on radio during WW2..
Just enough time for local station advertising before rejoining the network
WOW!! 6:07 to 8:40 Wouldn't of lasted 30 seconds on the Gong Show"
Bing Crosby must have a broom shaft up his posterior. Wooden delivery, about as exciting as watching two coats of paint drying.
Bing had a "dry", but friendly delivery (as evidenced by his previous radio shows), and audiences LOVED him.
@@fromthesidelines I'm looking forward to reading the second volume of Gary Giddings' biography (although it only covers the World War II years)
