- This is a promotional film narrated by Tennessee Ernie Ford that shows the process of signing an artist, making a record, and selling it in 1958. It shows several stars from the time including: Barbara Gayle, Leonard Pennario, Mora Lympany, Micky Katz, and John Browning. It also briefly features an appearance by Glen Wallichs, Capitol Records' former president and one the original co-founders (the other co-founders were Johnny Mercer and Buddy DeSylva).

Remember when music was made by musicians? Even the library music they use throughout this piece is better than the copy/paste computer generated homogeneity of modern documentaries.

Many thanks for bringing us this marvellous film from the great age of records. It’s so full of treasures - the dolls house size record store, and Kathy clearly bursting out; ‘That’s my record!’ When her driver turns on the radio. Priceless. If only life were so pleasant and perfect.

No, it was pretty much the same then, if not MORE SO. They paid ea. artist very little then. 1.5 cents per record, 2 cents if they were lucky. I also commented about it above.

After C-9 comes C-20 from Reel L-10, C-43A, from Reel L-18 and the tale end of C-7, from Reel L-7, Years later, I wrote words to C-7 and retitled it as “The Metro Tunnel”, It’s on my fourth album called “The William Loose Songbook Album”, a tribute to the late William Loose, who I’ve met in 1984, William Loose (1910-1991).
Love it! This should have been done with all the great studios. Unfortunately, too many of them no longer exist.

One error in the copy here...King Records was the first company to hava an all-in one plant. Offices, studios, cover artists, photography, mastering. pressing plants, writers, A&R, even the printing was all done at 1530 Brewster Ave., Cincinnati. I toured the sprawling, still-standing King buildings a couple of years ago.
King Bee More people need to know the history of that company more than Capitol.

I heard that in the 1950s Yma Sumac Outsold even Frank Sinatra at Capitol she made more money for Capitol that Frank Sinatra did for a while there! Why was she conspicuously absent from this video that’s a good question!

Kathy who? Warning, fictional movie! Hmm, small time actress Barbara Gayle? Somebody at Capitol must have seen one of her 4 appearances on "The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet". Sue Raney? A real Capitol artist, but never had a Top40 hit. State of the art studios? All I saw was a single-track recorder. Movie studios had been using 3-track since the 1930's. Most recording studios had been using 2-track for a few years and by 1958 were using 3-track. Where's the famous basement echo chambers? Besides original recordings, these echo chambers were used for the Capitol "Duophonic" fake stereo process. Remember the Beatles first couple of "stereo" albums and the Beach Boys "Duophonic" LP's into 1967? Heck, even ol' Tennessee Ernie benifited.
Harley, since this was made primarily for retail record shop owners, I don't think they intended to get deep enough into the technical side to satisfy us audiophiles, historians and collectors. Still, this is stuff you didn't see everyday and is a great look at the late '50s record business.

On a point detail, Kathy’s Dream Date album was on a Capitol rainbow label, which I always supposed came about around 1960 - two years after this film. Incidentally, the real Kathy, Sue Rainey had her debut album the year this film was made - on a blue label.

Apparently, Kathy never existed. Was just a character played by actress Barbara Gayle. In the year previous to this small role, she played a credited extra as "Voguette #2" in the film "Rockabilly Baby." That's all I could find. Maybe you can find out more. I wonder whether she had done anything else. There is mention of another actress (?) with that same name who was on Ozzy & Harriet in 1952 but I'm wondering if they are the same person or not.

That "A&R" guy's a bit too "handsy" with Cathy, who he just met. Also, he seems right in her face, too close for comfort ALL THE TIME after her arrival, holding on to her elbow to lead her around. Sexist & demean much? How would he handle a male performer. Also, when she signs on the dotted line, standard practice then was that she'd sing & perform her heart out for 1.5 measly cents per HER record sold; 2 cents "if she's lucky." Capitol/EMI gave the BEATLES 2 cents per records sold. They each were multi-millionaires. Capitol probably earned HUNDREDS of million$ of dollar$ on Beatles records alone, then The Beach Boys, et. al. Great History! Thanks for the upload.
Let's see, a 33 record was about 75 cents retail back then. So at 1.5 cents per record, she would have been getting 2% of the gross. Considering the record store, the truck drivers to deliver the records, the people to market the records, the studio musicians, the people doing the technical recording, the rent on the Capitol Records building, and the 500 or so people working there that all have to be paid off that record, I think 2% ain't all that bad.
As for 'handsy' that was proper culture among gentlemen and gentlewomen those days. Gentlemen assisted ladies. That is how they were taught. You have been taught that gentlemen never touch women. That would be considered extremely rude back then, and would have earned you no points with the ladies, and could have gotten you fired if they complained enough to other people, as they likely would have done. How would he have behaved with a male? He would have put his hand on his back, or over his shoulder, and would have shaken hands. About the only difference is he would have been unlikely to have held hands, as could happen between a man and a woman in that era. People touched people back then. Now it is illegal.
