The Cathedral being alive DRASTICALLY changed my own viewing experiences of the film! It's like the building is alive and can understand/interact with what is happening.
this is exactly how i pictured the gargoyles. they were his guardian spirits/angels. maybe god bringing them off and on to life to punish the evil and care for quasi.
6:00 Actually, in the opening scene the statues on the outside of the cathedral all stare at Frollo when he's about to drown Quasimodo. Granted you can probably say it's just in his head, but you can argue that for the gargoyle he holds onto before dying as well.
I like your thoughts on the Cathedral being alive as its own entity! Give a new sense of the prayers being revived within its walls and hold true to the Pastors declaration to Frolo that eyes of the church have witnessed his crime!
Even if we look at the God Help the Outcasts song, what happens a few scenes later? Quasimodo, basically an agent of the church, goes to help the outcasts, saves Esmeralda's life, and then the church works as a defense against the soldiers attacking it. Plus, yeah, the church gets full credit for Frollo's death too - so it really went above and beyond to help out there!
I have often wondered this same thing and I could never convince myself one way or the other, but I like your take on this. I would love it if Quasi had guardian angels looking after him all these years and that's why they couldn't reveal themselves, but I'm not sure if I'm convinced 🤔 It seems like there are still holes in this theory but it's definitely one to think about.
I believe the Gargoyles are Quasimodo's guardian angels sent to watch over and protect him. They appear as gargoyles because its a form Quasi's most comfortable with, they only appear to him because (not counting Djali, who's a goat). With the religious subtext in the movie it wouldn't be out of place to have angels in the form gargoyles watching over an outcast.
Quasimodo is like Rapunzel but sadder as Mother Gothel at least pretended to care about her as a person. Even though, she only cares about her hair. And then you have Frollo, whose openly cruel to him
The problem with the Frollo's and the Mother Gothel's is that, how do you know any different? You're kept in isolation since you were a baby, have no other human contact, and you've been manipulated the entire time, so... that's just what love looks like to you. And it's so sad... T_T
I think you're right and they're probably were something he imagined... Kind of like you concluded a while ago about the "fevered imaginings of a dying brain" or something like that, with how he probably didn't actually have that big battle at the end dumping the boiling pitch or whatever that was on the guards because it wasn't there in the end scene... like how Snow White most likely ended :/ Disney is so child-friendly with distractions like that and turning dark thing into something a child can understand and deal with.. and he was probably just moving them around the whole time, I like the strength training idea haha, & they probably put that scene with the goat in for fun or to question it more. It's still one of the most beautiful Disney movies to me, I remember how excited I was to see it in the theater... a million years ago hahah. Yikes lol ;S Cheers!
I always thought that they were alive. Especially if you look at the ending of the second movie, where they actually speak to Madeline and she responds to them directly
Speaking of the strength mother's get, I was fortunate enough to visit a Peace museum in Hiroshima, there's a story of a mom who was outside in the garden during the bomb, her whole body was burned, her house was burning with her two daughters inside and one of the beams had fallen trapping her two daughters inside. Three men tried to help her lift the beam but they couldn't and when they gave up she lifted it all by herself. As soon as the girls were free she dropped dead her body unable to handle anymore.
Apparently the original idea - which I sort of like better - was to name the gargoyles Loni, Charles and Antoine, after the three actors famous for playing Quasimodo in movies, Lon Chaney, Charles Laughton and Anthony Quinn. It would also have been a subtle hint that they are an extension of Quasimodo.
The one things that convinces me they are alive and not just imaginings of Quasimodo is they positions of the gargoyles. If you pay close attention, they are not always the same when they "freeze". The most obvious example is at the beginning the one gargoyle is sleeping with his mouth open. Other times when he's frozen he has his mouth closed.
I actually like the Gargoyles. But I don't get why people hate them. I think Quasimodo and Rapunzel should be great friends since they be in isolation by their abusive "guardian".
Well, I don't mind the gargoyles but if I had to guess, it's the fact that they were meant to be the "comic relief" in an otherwise dark and serious movie. So I think it's more of the fact that they just felt out of place in this otherwise amazing and underrated story.
R.I.P. Tony Jay (1933-2006) Voice of Judge Frollo from Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame an amazing and chilling performance singing Hellfire Judge Frollo He's Evil One of the best and most Darkest Disney Villains ever Judge Frollo He's really special and Tony Jay's voice was a part of it. ❤🖤💜🔥😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😢😢😢😢
This theory makes so much sense! I always thought the gargoyles were alive, but it definitely fits that they'd be the living manifestation of Notre Dame itself, especially since the whole motive of Victor Hugo writing the book in the first place was to show the importance of the cathedral in a time when old buildings were just being replaced/modernized without a care for their history or significance.
I think they are imagined. The hints of them being alive can all fall to favor quasi’s delusion. The goat has a rampant imagination and thinks they are alive because it can’t grasp the concept of non living statues that look so real to him. The fight scenes are quasi inflicting all the damage himself but then imagining the gargoyles doing it so he wouldn’t feel like he’s doing it alone. And lastly Frolo has gone mad with rage and adrenaline and actually loses his mind in his final moments thus he briefly believes the statue comes to life and defeats him. His mind does this because due to his narcissistic nature he is unable to accept that he has ultimately failed. These are my takes, and great video btw!
Great vid, ty. You just reminded me of my brother that passed away. We argued through the movie wether or not they were only in Q's head. Until the climax. We decided that "Our Lady" had his back.
I really like your theory. I got the longest time thought they were friends he made up in his head out of loneliness. However after watching this I think you have to be right, they definitely interacted with the real world. Thanks for this, I am going to go rewatch the movie now :D
Well there have actually been cases where people lift super heavy object to save children. That has actually happened all over the world. I watched news segment back in 90s where mother lifted back blade of a HELICOPTER... so yeah.
Well Fangirl. As far as you saying Notre Dame itself is alive and has the ability to create life at 6:13 is concerned. And regarding the Gargoyle Frollo stands on coming to like and concerning that. If I had guess. That Gargoyle did not come to life and Frollo was seeing a literal demon before his eyes before dying (Knowing he was heading to Hell). Given that their are plenty of stories where some people actually did see Demons or Ghostly Beings all around them when dying or on the verge of Death itself. One notable example is the deceased UA-camr. Charles Green (Angry Grandpa). Who actually did say that he saw demons all around him when he was dying after one stomach surgery operation So if anything. Frollo could have been seeing an actual demon before going down to Hell. Although I do wonder as to why Frollo didn't just get off the Gargoyle and get on the Cathedral walkway and just stab Esmeralda. Knowing how old the Gargoyles were if one was able to easy break off after being slashed with a sword to where they weren't stable as to support someone's weight. Assuming that Frollo was just being so arrogant as to think he could behead Esmeralda right there with nothing going wrong. But I digress. I also think soldiers having stuff thrown at them could be interpreted as Quasi throwing stones and rocks at the soldiers and he was just envisioning the Gargoyles helping out. Feel free to either agree or disagree with me. Aside from that. A fine job done on the video. God bless and have a great day.

@The Fangirl There’s to be a remake of Hunchback of Notre Dame with Josh Gad working on it, so do you think it may have some connections with the Beauty and the Beast remake?
Gargoyles by legends are evil spirit/demon wards. The three showing themselves to him could be because of his residency and his mothers death at the entryway. Guardians taking pity on a poor young lost soul. The antagonist being confronted finally by the other gargoyles is because he finally showed his true colors.
Well the devil doors, which quasi’s mom banged on and are rumored to be cursed because the guy who made them sold his soul to the devil in order to make them so it could be the statues were made by someone who made a similar deal, but the guardian Angel theory makes way more sense
