Having Quasimodo (along with Esmeralda and Phoebus) dealing with trauma from Frollo and then Quasi meeting Madellaine and bringing her into their little found family and thus finding a way to cope with everything would’ve made a much better plot line than “Oh yea, we need to give Quasi a girlfriend”

Let's face it. This only exists just to give Quasi a girlfriend since Esmerelda didn't fall in love with him in the original even though Quasi's goal wasn't to fall in love. It was to be accepted among the public for who he is as a person, and in the end, he got exactly what he wanted. It shows that not everyone needs to fall in love in order to achieve happiness, that sometimes, just simply being accepted for who you are is totally fine. I just hate how this movie completely shits all over that in favor of delivering such a bland, cheesy, and painfully predictable romance flick. It completely misses the point of what made its predecessor such an underrated masterpiece, and that's why it rightfully earns its title as one of the absolute worst direct-to-DVD Disney sequels, down there with stuff like Belle's Magical World, Atlantis: Milo's Return, Mulan II, and more. For a movie all about love, I absolutely hate its existence just as much if not more than the movie itself. I remember wanting to watch this movie back when I was a kid after seeing the preview for it, but I never did. However, now that I'm an adult and I have seen it, I just find myself asking, "Why was I so interested in watching this crap?" On the bright side though, Chicken Run is up next on the menu for AniMat's Classic Reviews, so that'll be something to look forward to. By the way, is it bad for me to say that this movie makes me crave chicken pot pies?
While this movie is not gmthat grrat it does not "shit on" the themes of the first. While the first movie is about Quasimodo being romatically rejected but still socially accepted, what exactly is WRONG with sequel being different? In case you didn't know people want to be loved romantically, even ugly people (shocking, right?). So in the first film he earns social acceptance, and in the sequel he earns romance. Tell me what exactly is WRONG with that? Is it an unoriginal outcome? Are you that hell bent on a fictional character being single for the rest of his fictional life because he got rejected once? Because that would be pretty fucking stuoid of you to think. There is literally nothing critically wrong with the way they did it, you are making a big deal out of nothing and need to go touch grass
Dude, we get it, but let's forget that in accordance with social acceptance, he also wanted human connections. You don't even know the true reason it was made so me and you so far are blowing hot air.
Yes! The next review is gonna be “Chicken Run”! More than a year late to release it for The film’s 20th anniversary, but like I said during his “The Emperor’s New Groove” review, better late than never.
I hope someday AniMat would review the original Shrek movies. Shrek 1 and 2 I believe the first one will get the seal of approval but Shrek 2 will also get the seal with a 10/10.
@@vetarlittorf1807 Jafar did get a good villains song in The Return of Jafar. It just sucks that when he finally gets his own villain song and not a twisted reprise of a previous song it’s in a direct-to-video sequel; considering Jafar is among Disney’s iconic villains and best villains from the Renaissance Era next to Ursula, Gaston, Scar, Frollo and Hades.
What's sad is that Madellaine's voice actress, Jennifer Love Hewitt, said in a preview for this film that she thought this would be a fantastic movie, something people would want to have in their house to watch over and over again, and a really sweet story. It sounded like she had a lot of faith in this movie. It really is tragic this movie ended up failing as much as it did. I really do feel sorry for her.
Tell me about it, I re-watched teaser trailer of the film for the third time, three weeks ago and I was expecting the film was gonna be fantastic like Jennifer said, sadly it wasn't. But it wasn't her fault. It was the filmmakers and Bradley Raymond's direction.
Yea, poor Jennifer had no clue what she was getting into. Voice actors rarely see the animation and scenes outside of ones where they have lines and a general synopsis so it makes sense why she had so much faith in the movie during the interviews.
The comic relief gargoyles were actually kind of interesting in the first movie. Their personalities are of course just intended to make the kids laugh, but they might be a coping device for him because of his loneliness. The only ones who see them move are Claude from the original movie (and even then he only sees a completely different Gargoyle moving as he falls into Hell... or at least into bronze lava) after ironically assuring Quasi that he has no friends other than him. The other is Esme's goat and she only sees them move for a single moment which surprises her. That psychological ambiguity was retconned here too.
That whole thing- that was because people complained that Quasi didn't "get the girl." Even though that wasn't the point. And I know they're going to do that for the remake and say it's an improvement.
If there’s one thing I didn’t like about this Disney direct-to-video sequel it’s the lack of shading and lighting on the characters. Certain Disney sequels like Bambi 2 and The Lion King 2 for example, had their characters fleshed out with the use of lights and shadows on them. Unlike the first film, the characters in this Disney sequel just had flat colors which made them look bland and unfinished. Pretty much why I don’t revisit this film very often.
Agree. This isn't even Disney television animation quality animation either; looks like something churned out by some cheap direct-to-video mockbuster company like Golden Films.
This movie couldn’t even get the colors to be consistent on the characters from scene to scene. What makes you think they were gonna shade anything? Lol
This is the same problem with Return of Jafar, the last half that is. Both have animation done by Japanese studios. With that said though, you're trying to replicate the first film on cels with a fraction of the budget. Good luck with that
In my opinion, one of the best things in the original was Frollo. What made Frollo unique from other Disney villains was that he was not only the antagonist of the movie but also the protagonist. This, in my opinion, is one of the reasons as to why the Hunchback of Norte Dame should not have a sequel. You can’t do a Hunchback of Norte Dame story without Frollo. It’s like trying to do a Jurassic Park movie without the T-Rex or a Shrek movie without Shrek or a phase 1-3 Avengers movie without Iron Man or a Han Solo movie without Chewbacca or a Spider-Man movie without Spider-Man or an X-Men movie without Wolverine (oh wait that happened).
This is movie is an unholy demon, I am sending it back to hell where it belongs. Archdeacon: Okay. Wait, you are not going to stop me? Archdeacon: That movie is s**t and it ruins what made the original a masterpiece. Exactly.
Next time on Animat’s Classic Reviews, we’re heading for Tweedy’s Farm for a film that will be miles better than this sequel, maybe even Seal-Of-Approval Worthy.
CHICKEN RUN IS UP NEXT!! Hell yeah, it has been a very long while since you last did an Aardman movie review and as I British guy like myself I am so happy.

6:13 - 6:23 You could use the scene from the first Hunchback when Paris was being burnt to a crisp but place the copies of Hunchback 2 on the burning buildings or the scene where Esmeralda was being sentence to death by fire but have HBONDII in Esmeralda's place.
Considering the low-budget animation this feel like more of a pilot for a television series that was never made while the Little Mermaid, Hercules and Aladdin managed to get a good number of seasons for a television series but Beauty and the Beast and Atlantis had only a compilation movie sequel but honestly Atlantis should have had a series
To be fair, those A-List stars that reprised their roles and jumped in for the new characters probably didn't know the animation would be this abysmal when signing on to the film.

As eye-rollingly simple and unneeded as the Disney straight-to-video sequels were (Lion King 2/3, Bambi 2, Aladin 3, Cinderella 3 aside) I do have a nostalgia for them and I still enjoy going down memory lane with them from time to time like with the classics.
Aw he could've done it like this "Is there some beauty that can be found on the inside of its not-so attractive exterior or should this sequel burn and taste the fires of Hell?"
I think the only Disney direct-to-video sequels I accept as *canon* are The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, The Lion King 1/2, Bambi II, Cinderella III: A Twist In Time and Return to Neverland.
I'm convinced the majority of the budget went to the actors' paychecks. Its a movie made in the late 90's and early 00's that features DEMI MOORE and JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT, so of course that where the money went.
OMG! You're finally gonna review "Chicken Run" next, sweet I have been looking forward to your Ani-Mat review. I can't wait to check it out because it's one of my all time favorite stop-motion movie!
Hunchback of Notre Dame really went from Hero to Zero there... One of the most cinematic, epic and dark animated movies ever made to a literal shitpost.
This basically feels like footage of an unreleased Notre Dame cartoon being stolen and then put it into one big movie, something that you would expect in almost every single one of Disney's “cheapquels”, and then guess what happened? Yep, you just got this lame excuse of an animated sequel that doesn’t really need to be made.
The animation is competent for a Disney Afternoon show produced by TMS, but what I REALLY hate is the color palette, they made Esmeralda and the other Romani characters look ashy.
I feel like if this movie could have really hammered home the "beautiful on the inside" message better, if Quasi's love interest was "ugly". Madeline is pretty much a Disney princess and in many ways it feels like she is just a "reward" for Quasi being a good person and there's already a ton of movies out there where the "unattractive" male character winds up with a pretty girl. They could have had Madeline be a "circus freak" of some sort with no options other than working for Sarouche. There could even be a more conventionally pretty but petty character (maybe serving as Sarouche's accomplice?) that Quasi could be initially attracted to. Admittedly, it might feel like the love interest was essentially a female version of Quasi, but there would be more room for topics like attraction vs love, pretty privilege, how confusing love can be if you don't have a ton of experience when it comes to romance, etc.
Oh a deviantart artist WhiteFangKakashi made some kind of rewritting of this sequel where insted of a circus theres a freak show and maddie is a member of it. This version feels like like for more mature audience tho.
LITERALLY I watched today for a review and that's exactly what I thought. They already had the BATB for the "pretty girl ugly guy" and I don't complain about that movie, but a change would've been nice.
After learning about the fact that it missed the point of the first film by giving Quasimodo a girlfriend, all I could think of is quoting Antonio the Ant from one episode of Hermie and Friends (Flo the Lyin’ Fly) by saying this line: “Hey! You can’t do that! Well I guess they just did...”
You mentioned Little Mermaid II as an example of a good-looking DtV sequel, but I think of a better example would be Cinderella II which was released a month before this one.
6:14 *NOW IM GONNA DESTROY THIS MOVIE!!!😡 With WORDS…And leaving it a NEGATIVE REVIEW!!..a-and making it look stupid look I can’t really do much I’m a UA-camr not Batman😂😂😂😂😂*
"Regarding the animation, maybe this was intentional form them, or maybe it's just because the team behind it didn't have enough time or money to properly produce this, but they **really** were pushing the inner beauty message to the test here!" I just can't 😭😂
Is it wrong to say I actually do enjoy this one, seriously I rewatched it for myself and I honestly find it almost the polar opposite of what you think. Granted yes it's elements are actually terrible, like story-wise is bad, animation definitely cheap, characters are just a shell, and of course all the songs are terrible. But I would lie to say that i think the romance is kinda cute, animated wise is so better then Return of Jafar, and I really think Madaline and Zepher are really the best edition. Also agree to disagree I think the "fa la la fallin In love" song is actually the best song of the movie It's the only one that has a catchy beat (At least in the first half)
The original voice actors, from the sound of them, had just as little faith in this as everyone else. This one deserved the seal of garbage right next to Pocahontas 2.
I personally think everything about this movie can work as a show and these being the first couple of episodes and continue onward because I think everything shown here can work that way and I actually like it so what I actually would wished for was this actually was a series.
Didn't matter when I was a kid lol. It took me watching the first movie again a lot later to realise just how much better literally everything was than the sequel.

However, now that I'm an adult and I have seen it, I just find myself asking, "Why was I so interested in watching this crap?"
On the bright side though, Chicken Run is up next on the menu for AniMat's Classic Reviews, so that'll be something to look forward to.
♫Hellfire! Dark fire!
Now Hunchback 2 It's your turn!
The Seal of Garbage
Demands that you now burn!♫
That was pretty good.
👏👏👏
Yes! The next review is gonna be “Chicken Run”! More than a year late to release it for The film’s 20th anniversary, but like I said during his “The Emperor’s New Groove” review, better late than never.
Well I did tried to request it sooner, but it's how it was scheduled that cause that delay.
@@alanoliva2020 oh well, you gave it your best shot. At least we’ll finally be getting it next month. Like I said, “better late than never”
I hope someday AniMat would review the original Shrek movies. Shrek 1 and 2 I believe the first one will get the seal of approval but Shrek 2 will also get the seal with a 10/10.
Same here.
@@friepaign3828 if you like, I might ask him next time. I actually been thinking about it since it's on my list
The songs in the first movie are beautiful, sad and breath taking. The songs in this film are boring and forgettable.
The only good songs from a Disney sequel are from The Lion King 2 and Aladdin 3.
And 101 Dalmatians 2
@@vetarlittorf1807 Jafar did get a good villains song in The Return of Jafar. It just sucks that when he finally gets his own villain song and not a twisted reprise of a previous song it’s in a direct-to-video sequel; considering Jafar is among Disney’s iconic villains and best villains from the Renaissance Era next to Ursula, Gaston, Scar, Frollo and Hades.
Cinderella 3 has good songs and Mulan ll has one good song too.
Idk about you but the songs were pretty nice
I remember that from the trailers as a kid! Dang, they knew how to edit those things to make it look good..
I don’t think she said that out of her honest opinion, I think she said it more for $$$.
@@arbytv5139 We don't know that for sure.
Yeah no. They are real since they cause real damage during the attack of notre dame
I agree.
Djalo is a male in these movies.
Handsome Quasi actually makes Normal Quasi look a lot more appealing
15:12 When I heard that Haley Joel Osment voiced Zephyr, I was kind of expecting a Kingdom Hearts joke, but that got a genuine chuckle out of me.
Oh my god I completely forgot Haley Joel Osment was Sora in Kingdom Hearts 😂😂😂
@@PhoenixJohnson29 He also voiced Vannitas, the evil Sora.
@@PhoenixJohnson29 He also voiced Mowgli in Jungle Book 2, and the voice he does for that is very Kingdom Hearts 1 Sora.
Hard to believe that Haley Joel Osment, who played Zephyr, grew up to play a much better character called Sora...
That whole thing- that was because people complained that Quasi didn't "get the girl." Even though that wasn't the point. And I know they're going to do that for the remake and say it's an improvement.
I don’t think that they will do it for the remake. If anything, I see them going further and possibly even going with the Hugo ending.
So it wasnt the point of the first film but it was the point of the sequel. There is nothing wrong for a sequel to have a different purpose
You guys need to stop saying the same thing. The motives for the first and second are different despite quality.
Good luck with that
Can’t believe Disney decided to Hunchbackstab us.
They Hunchbackpeddaled on the quality just to make a quick hunchbuck
The quality sure when Hunchbackwards
Exactly.
😂😂😂😂
Next time on Animat’s Classic Reviews, we’re heading for Tweedy’s Farm for a film that will be miles better than this sequel, maybe even Seal-Of-Approval Worthy.
I never heard of it!
It's Chicken Run.
Hey you guessed it!
Now that movie is a legendary masterpiece, unlike this one.
It's not out yet calm down
I’m glad Quasi got his ending because the real version is disturbing and sad
Hellfire!
Dark Fire!
Now Hunchback II, it’s your turn!
Time to meet, your pyre!
In Hell where you will buuuuuuuurn!
CHICKEN RUN IS UP NEXT!! Hell yeah, it has been a very long while since you last did an Aardman movie review and as I British guy like myself I am so happy.
This is my favorite review of a Direct-to-Home-Media Disney sequel you’ve done thus far! Great job, AniMat! I was not disappointed after your AniMat Watches!
It seems that frollo took all the quality and passion with him to hell😂
I actually find Quasimodo’s relationship with Zephyr and Madeline really cute and sweet but that’s the only redeeming quality of the movie to me. :/
To be fair, those A-List stars that reprised their roles and jumped in for the new characters probably didn't know the animation would be this abysmal when signing on to the film.
Maybe not. But they probably had at least SOME idea that it wouldn’t be the cinematic masterpiece that the first was
Gaston - Pride 👑
The Evil Queen - Envy 😠💭💀
Lawd Frolo - Lust 🔥💖
The Queen of Hearts - Wrath 🤬💢
Governor Ratcliffe - Greed 💰💰💰

As eye-rollingly simple and unneeded as the Disney straight-to-video sequels were (Lion King 2/3, Bambi 2, Aladin 3, Cinderella 3 aside) I do have a nostalgia for them and I still enjoy going down memory lane with them from time to time like with the classics.

Behold, my new favorite swear,
“Son of a fish”.
Aw he could've done it like this "Is there some beauty that can be found on the inside of its not-so attractive exterior or should this sequel burn and taste the fires of Hell?"
13:52-14:07 Even she knew this was going to be bad, so she didn’t even bother trying.
Can we agree that most of the Disney direct to video sequels are non canon?
I think the only Disney direct-to-video sequels I accept as *canon* are The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, The Lion King 1/2, Bambi II, Cinderella III: A Twist In Time and Return to Neverland.
It's ironic that they made a sequel version of A Guy Like You when that song probably would've fit in perfectly in the sequel.
True, but his song about a special connection would have also fit in well.
Quasimodo-What do I say?
Gargoyles-Open your mouth, something will come out.
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I'm convinced the majority of the budget went to the actors' paychecks. Its a movie made in the late 90's and early 00's that features DEMI MOORE and JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT, so of course that where the money went.
This feels like goodtimes version of hunchback all over again
♫ Imagine someone to hate who hates you! Imagine to look in their eyes and seeeee......RAGE! ♫
The animation is competent for a Disney Afternoon show produced by TMS, but what I REALLY hate is the color palette, they made Esmeralda and the other Romani characters look ashy.
YEEEEESSSSSSSSS! Chicken Run will be next. Quite ironic given that the holiday season is right around the corner.
Handsome Quasimodo is my sleep paralysis demon now
I feel like if this movie could have really hammered home the "beautiful on the inside" message better, if Quasi's love interest was "ugly".
They already had the BATB for the "pretty girl ugly guy" and I don't complain about that movie, but a change would've been nice.
i see your point, could be explored i have not many problems with the movie but some things i think could have been improved.
Hunchback 2 is on the same level as those Goodtimes knockoff Disney movies.
After learning about the fact that it missed the point of the first film by giving Quasimodo a girlfriend, all I could think of is quoting Antonio the Ant from one episode of Hermie and Friends (Flo the Lyin’ Fly) by saying this line:
“Hey! You can’t do that! Well I guess they just did...”
You do realize that the first and second quasi has different motives right?
I just watched Chicken Run last night!
Classic movie. Great for Thanksgiving, too!
Hopefully Disney won't make it too long a wait for the live-action version...
"Regarding the animation, maybe this was intentional form them, or maybe it's just because the team behind it didn't have enough time or money to properly produce this, but they **really** were pushing the inner beauty message to the test here!" I just can't 😭😂
Congratulations on your sponsors! It’s been a while since I’ve watched your vids! Keep up the great work!
Next Animat Classic Review: Chicken litt… I mean Run.
Also agree to disagree I think the "fa la la fallin In love" song is actually the best song of the movie
It's the only one that has a catchy beat
(At least in the first half)
I'm in the same boat too, some of some of the songs are pretty sweets especially the one with zephyr and quasi.
He needs to review Beauty and the Beast from 1991. That way, he’ll no longer see Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 ever again.
Prediction for AnimMat’s next Review Chicken Run
Story: 10/10
Animation: 9/10
Characters: 9/10
Overall: 9/10
The original voice actors, from the sound of them, had just as little faith in this as everyone else. This one deserved the seal of garbage right next to Pocahontas 2.
I personally think everything about this movie can work as a show and these being the first couple of episodes and continue onward because I think everything shown here can work that way and I actually like it so what I actually would wished for was this actually was a series.
Didn't matter when I was a kid lol. It took me watching the first movie again a lot later to realise just how much better literally everything was than the sequel.
"To be free, or to be a pie"
I guess Chicken Run is next!
15:22-15:35 This feels like that scene in the trailer for Turning Red.
Frollo falling: “Yes!”
Sarouche: “No!”
Which scene from the trailer Turning Red?
@@esmeraldadelatorre8676 The one at the very end when Mei tries to calm herself down, turns herself back to normal, but then turns back into a red panda again not 3 seconds after that.

“Hello 👋.”
I’m with you there. I unapologetically love the sequel!
Say sike now
me too bro, i mostly don't care for animation it's a fun movie about some that it's more than just his looks but what his has in his heart.
I love this movie! I love how Quasimodo fell in love and the girl loved him back. I love the message in this movie that anyone can find love regardless of vain superficial ideals like what you look like, where you’re from, or what economic background you come from. And Jennifer Love Hewitt did her thang with the song to this movie! #truelove
Say sike rn or I'll break into your house.
Oh good I’m glad I’m not the only who enjoyed it
Fun fact: Jennifer Love Hewitt was also in the horror movie I know what you did last summer and the second movie
For the villain- all I can say is, at least they didn't pull a LM2 and bring in 'Frollo's Even-more-evil Brother'
Pretty ironic, since in the book Frollo does have a little brother, and he is indeed a worse person overall than Claude.
You can call this the Teen Titans GO! of Disney sequels.
The trouble with Direct to Video sequels is that they're ALWAYS toned down after the originals are released, from the animation to the acting. It's like the writers and the artists turned lazy and the actors turned bland.
21:55 now I’ll never know if the music in the artic dogs review permanent or not
I love and hate the fact that you put Handsome Quasi in the thumbnail. Pfft, it's ironic that trying to make Quasi handsome just makes him look worse. XD
When he finally does a Classic Review of Mulan II, I’d like to see him use Psycho Shang in the thumbnail.
Psycho Shang: “And next time... DON’T LEAVE YOUR POST!!!”
And for some reason it feels super ableist
Honestly, the best thing about this movie is the end credit song, "I'm Gonna Love You".
26:44 Pretty much this crappy sequel in a nutshell.
EDIT: Sorry I got the time league wrong at '22:44' instead of '24:44' so that's my error on the comment's side.
Yep
11:33 This women looks out of place in a Disney movie
Sometimes I think Disney took the dark tone of the original movie granted during the making of this film
I am gonna take a guess that a huge chunk of this straight to video budget was to get the entire cast of the first one back.
Hewy Toonmore ranked for La La La falling in love the worst in his bad Disney song list, so I’m not surprised that Mat thinks it’s the worst in the movie.
Chicken Run is actually one of my favorite animated movies. :)
I'm looking forward to that review.
