Hello James. thank you for the video because i was looking over the web for some guidance about a abu 506 that i have gotten but did not know how to use ore setup such a closed face reel. maybe it would be a good thing if you would make some kind of video that explains using a Abu and how to setup the spool with new line etc because the only manual i found was not readable at all. but again thank you, i now already know with your video how to setup the line and cast it out ;-)
Hi, this is amazing. I used to do a hell of a lot of match river fishing. My preferred weapon of choice to do it well as a real (100%) was the closed faced ABU with out a question ever!!! I am just about to go back into it and will be using the latest ABU closed faced real as my first weapon of choice!!!
I love using closed face reels - currently a 704. But it's about time someone designed one properly instead of just making a few tweaks - although some of those seen here are sensible. The problem with my earlier version of this reel is the useless "half drag" mode. This is engaged (accidentally most of the time) by back winding a fraction of a turn (anti-reverse engaged). It's supposed to return to the full drag value as soon as you begin winding forward again: frequently this doesn't happen, allowing a decent fish to strip line effortlessly. I have dis-assembled and re-assembled the reel several times without managing to cure it. I have a couple of near mint 505s (which I don't use) and a non-functional 507 "Gold match edition" too. The latter, which I was given as a broken unit, has a larger diameter spool, which is a shortcoming of the other versions - its extra size and weight is insignificant but there seems to be no anti-reverse. I'm also curious to know if the current Daiwa version is any good.
A new closed face will be released in September and we are certain you will be delighted with it!!! keep a look out for a video over at shakespearefishingtv channel on utube.
Love the 706 !! Always gave used the closed face abus however the synchro backwind doesn't work ! The handle doesn't move back at all and the reel is brand new never used?

I still got me old 506, brought it in 1974, she still works as good as new.

I bought an Abu 1044 many years ago and it's great. I still have it :-)
I have this reel. It's the best reel I have . Great for flowing water work, so smooth and easy line pull off. I use it for most of my fishing.

I'd like to see, and buy, a heavy duty model, for catfishing. A large model holding 60 yards of 25 lb. line.
Just brought a new Abu 507 mk11 how do you spool the reel the spool just goes up and down it doesn't turn
I had this problem with my new 507. Took it back to shop and they just removes the excess grease from the bale mechanism and it's fine now.
What pound test line can you use on that reel.
.18mm line is 4-5 lb its designed really for silver fish and up to about 6-8 lb
