I wouldn't dare dismantle an Abu spin cast reel simply because of small parts and the differing screwing/unscrewing directions. You made it easy and interesting and additionally displaying the part numbers. Great video!!!
Thanks for the great video. I have one of these, bought back in the late 60s or 70s if I recall. It’s never been cleaned or oiled. Just don’t know if I have the courage to take it all apart to clean up. It still works great.
i also bought one at a flea market with rod for $5 scared to take it all apart as you did here afraid i won't be able to reassemble it correctly but it's not casting properly either. I have removed the bail and spool for cleaning so far. Removed all the line and gonna respool it with new line and see if casting improves at all if not i will go further into cleaning it a relubrication of the reel. I love Abu reels and have fished Abu baitcasters since i was a kid. Bought this for a general purpose reel as i need something that will throw much lighter baits for crappie, stripe, cats, and panfish.
Thanks for watching! Abu reels are easy to maintenance. It's a challenging for first time. There are many UA-cam vids for Abu maintenance. Good luck! Tight Lines!
I've got a vintage 170 from a friend. I love the reel. However it's got a chip in the small gear towards the top. I've got a replacement coming in the mail. How does one remove said gear?
very good vid , superstrike. Have this same vintage reel with the issue the push lever releases the bail ( /) over the spool but then turning the handle will not re-engage it??????????????? and i hear ratcheting when i turn handle. I can rotate the bail ( ?) by hand to re-engage it and it will turn with the handle before i put the cover back on but with the cover on its not turning or drawing the line back in. Any thoughts----------needing a lubrication seems likely to me perhaps but also suspecting some drag issues. . Any thoughst?????? Not going to buy the Garcia lube and oil ill never use again, any precautions using alternates grease and oil?
Thanks for watching! There was re-engaging issue on my reel. I cleaned the "line pick up pin". Then my reel works fine. Clean up any spring in the gear, it'll help.
Hi.... I have a 170c .... No star and different rear cover. I was wondering if you had done one on it or knew where I could find a similar video on it? Good video but mine is a little different.
Thanks! Sadly I got the reel second hand and it seems like the person tightened the handle lock nut so tight it cant be removed they must've thought counter clock wise was to loosen and just kept tightening it more and more till the head of the nut got stripped there's nothing for a flathead to bite onto. Maybe I'll buy one of those extractor bits from home Depot to see if I can get it out... Then I'll have to figure out how to tighten it back on
Thank you for the vid. Do you know if the parts from the abu matic 170 can work with the abu maitic 70 the trigger bar is missing from one I Purchased and I want to Restore the one I have I noticed someone in your video is way better I’m restoring it for my son.
Thanks for watching! I have no idea, but the both look same. Check the part number at the Abu parts or ereplacement.com. If the part number is same, it means same. Tight Lines!
superstrike thanks a lot I think so I’order the parts hopefully they fit I’ve had the reel for a long time just sitting in a tacklebox I got it out and started messing with it and realize it was a really well-built reel
It's a good idea to watch this video as long as you turn off the speakers completely first. If you don’t have the time or ability to search for more lively music in YuoTube’s free library, then it would be easier and above all smarter not to add any audio than almost the same headache all the time.
guy, when you doing delicate work as this ie removing small part requiring tweezers your loud, hard head-banging rock preference makes you the exception--this was very appropriate background music. Your comment was stupid!
Hi,
I have three 170,s and one 150 plus six 120,s they go back with me until 1960 just like they were new!!!!!!!!!

Yes, a paintbrush works great!

Thanks for the great video. I have one of these, bought back in the late 60s or 70s if I recall. It’s never been cleaned or oiled. Just don’t know if I have the courage to take it all apart to clean up. It still works great.

Is there handle retainer or washers?
Check the diagram at the eReplacement.com.
Great video! I have one of the newer ones. It didn't measure up and I wasn't fond of it at all. I may have just gotten a bad one. Who knows.

Do you know how to disassemble a 476i ?
Thanks for watching!
I don't know about 476i.
I would not recommend spraying degreaser then putting in grease, it will break down the grease
Thanks for sharing

You should never use any type of gasoline for cleaning anything it is highly flammable and dangerous.
