Thanks Max, for clarifying the issue regarding the inlays. You posted a response to my prior query on an older video in response to this issue, which was most appreciated.
Intonation is generally not an issue with the guitar - it is a setup issue. I have rarely come across a guitar that could just NOT be intonated. Certainly sometimes they don't come out of the box properly setup or intonated, but that is typically on the lower end of things. Literally every Schecter I have bought new is setup really well out of the box and the intonation is typically spot on. Setup and intonation should be something every guitarist learns how to do - it is straight forward and there are tons of tutorials on UA-cam to teach you. It will save you money if you don't need to pay someone else to do it - and I do guitar tech work as a side gig!

I was 17 at the time & I still have it. I'm 52 now. This guitar is just an absolute freak. It has T Top pickups from an older Les Paul but also has insane sustain. I got lucky
I appreciate and respect the amount of effort they put into intonating and fine tuning the guitar before shipping it out. I also find intonation to be critical for superior sound quality and playability. However all the hard work they put into fine tuning their guitars at the factory will eventually fly out the window when a new owner decides to change the strings, change guage, adjust the action or truss rod. It'll never be the same unless we have a mr Jinn in our pocket to intonate the guitar every time we change something. Dont get me wrong, I respect the extra effort that goes into making sure there guitars are perfect tuned before being sent out.
I have a pair of Fireflies (Guitar and Baritone) and a Fender Squire Tele that showed up with mediocre setups.I also have a Schecter Custom C-5 bass I have been playing for 15+ years and Ibanez Artcore AFB-140 bass I've been playing for 10+ years which also needed intonation work. Very happy that I found out about intonation through you, Ted Woodford, Guitar Geek, and a few other guitar channels I watch. Learned how to do setups myself through videos here on UA-cam and now all my instruments are *perfect*. Sadly, in the process I found out the bridge on my acoustic Alvarez bass is lifting off the sound board - that is something I'm going to take to a Luthier to have repaired.
@@LibertyDIY First I noticed a super high action (Unplayable after the 10th fret, and I'm used to high bass actions) after a well needed restringing. Also, the guitar shop I bought it from had it hanging on the wall for 4-5 years (Unbeknownst to me) before I bought it.
You asked for it - I recently tried a used Gretsch Guitars G2210 Solid Body Electric Guitar (because of unusual pickups and vintage color). They have since upgraded this model with a $100 price increase that includes Inconel Pickups and a bone nut. I hope they corrected the intonation issue - bridge location on the solid body on the earlier model is just a little off. Because it uses a wrap around bridge instead of a traditional Tune-o-Matic bridge and tail piece the intonation is set by adjusting only a single screw (two total) at the end of the bridge. There are no individual saddle adjustments on the inexpensive bridge. So you adjust the screw by the low E to set intonation hoping the A and D strings are intonated properly. And you adjust the screw by the high E to set intonation hoping the high B and G string are intonated properly. The saddle that is part of the bridge is supposed to be designed for this method of intonating the strings. But because the bridge is mounted slightly off the screws are just not long enough (have micro allen heads to at least make it easier to adjust them). But I went to the hardware store and they had slightly longer stainless steel screws (an upgrade) with the allen heads and now I am still slowly trying to get it set - tuning string, adjusting screw, re-tuning string pitch then checking for intonation at the 12th fret. As I typed earlier above I hope someone at fender/Gretsch works with Quality at the manufacturing plant in Asia somewhere to at least have corrected this issue on the upgraded models. And a related issue is that these have a set net and the bridge that has to be lowered to low to get good action of a les Paul style guitar because the cavity on the body was not deep enough by a mm or 2 mms or the thickness of the guitar neck where it mounts to the solid body was too thick by a mm or 2 mms. Thankfully because of the wrap around bridge volume is not impacted as it would be on a true tune-o-matic bridge and tail piece (it would impact the bend angle of the strings (shallow angle) between the two pieces if bridge has to be lowered next to the body within a mm) One would think after they made one or two they would check action carefully and make necessary corrections to their jigs and fixtures that cut the body and neck before making a run of 500 or more and shipping them to their vendors warehouses. and correct the drilling location of screws on saddle for the bridge. One would think Fender/Gretsch would catch this and have them shipped back!
One more extremely important point to consider when setting the intonation on any electric guitar, which is almost always overlooked, yet impacts the guitar's overall intonation greatly is PICKUP HEIGHT. If a pickup is too close to the strings, it's magnetic pole pieces will pull on the strings in such a manner that anomalous strobe tuner readings will result when using a clip on tuner, strobe spectrum display tuner, or stomp box / in line plug in type tuner. Whenever you have the proper amount of "relief" (back bow) in your guitar's neck, yet the individual notes appear to bounce back and forth from sharp to flat to sharp again as you check each individual fret position going up the neck, that will be a clear indicator that your pickups are having a little fun with you. Don't pull your hair out (mostly because the older you get, the harder it is to re-grow it), but mainly because you just simply need to back those pickups away from your strings so they aren't being quite as magnetically affected. You'll be amazed at how easily your guitar will now be to intonate.

Edited: You asked what was the worst itonated guitar it was a Squire I had from the 90's best intonated guitart I bought off the shelf was late model Gibson that came Pleck'd from the factory. I bought the Wolf 335 iteration about 4 years ago. AIO did a fantastic setup based on my specifications. Upon receiving it, everything was perfection. The folks at AIO are first class and I never would have tried them, much less had never even heard of them, until I saw you review one back then. Thanks to you and your show, this guitar is hands down my favorite. It also inspired me to start doing luthier work and to start building my own. I've been playing for 60 years and this red flamed maple top beauty from AIO and YOU re-energized me and were the inspiration to where I am now. Thank you and rock on 🤘🏻
I have a question about AIO guitars. I have 4 or 5 of them. In particular, I have 2 neck through Tele models. They later came out with a Tele with a humbucker in the neck position and I had to have it although I already had a Tele with single coils. Now the older Tele with single coil pickups is a Wolf and has paw print inlays on the neck. A nice touch in my opinion. The newer Tele with the humbucker in the neck is a AIO but also has paw print inlays on the neck although nowhere does it reference a wolf in any way. So my question is why does the AIO have paw print inlays?
Wow, just got my new dave grohl inspired firefly 338 semi-hollow body in metallic blue. It's is freaking gorgeous 😍 With all the signature series reviews on these dg branded epiphone guitars, how has no one reviewed the firefly variant yet!
Change title to "and every guitar can have it" Every guitar ever made can be intonated easily. And it's simple to do. My Gibson has perfect intonation, my Fenders have perfect intonation. My Ibanez has perfect intonation. How? The first thing I do every time I buy a guitar is set the intonation myself immediately. This entire conversation is a beginner knowledge conversation. It's something to be learned early on alongside how to tune your guitar because it goes hand in hand.
Amen. I was going to say the same thing. If you don’t know how to adjust your intonation … you really aren’t a guitar player. It’s like not even knowing how to tune your instrument.
@@creamwobblyHaha. It’s not rocket science. It’s an extreme simple and basic procedure. To compare it to being a luthier is ridiculous. You can “play guitar” without knowing how to do it, but you’re certainly not a guitarist worth his salt if you’ve never learned to twist a little screwdriver so that you can play in tune.
Instead of telling people to find someone that knows how to check the intonation, why not just tell them how to check the intonation. 😁Get a tuner, hit the 12th fret harmonic, then hit the open note, then hit the fretted 12th fret note. Those three should be the same. If the open note and the harmonic note are the same, but the fretted note is sharp, either loosen up that death grip you have on the neck or lower the action. If the open note is sharp compared to the harmonic, the string is too long, so adjust the saddle towards the nut. If the open note is flat compared to the harmonic, the string is too short, so adjust the saddle away from the nut. You could make a 15 minute video demonstrating that.
@@teenlaqueefa8339 I know that there are. My point is that this is not one of them when it easily could have been. Telling people to find someone that knows how to do something this simple for them is encouraging an intellectual laziness that doesn't help anyone. If you're going to play the guitar, learn how to set up and maintain the guitar. It isn't complicated.
@@cooperst765 I'm not ripping ass on Max. I love his videos, and he has obviously spent great deal of time honing his craft. It's just that this was one of those chances to, instead of giving me a fish, you could teach me to fish, which is far more useful. One low-key, super vanilla suggestion is not "ripping ass".
Honestly I love abalone inlays and binding. Apparently people say it is tacky. I never got the memo. I want that whiteburst AIO LP. Freakin gorgeous. I really wish they would do comfort carves like the ESP Eclipse though.
I bought 2 of these model guitars around 8 years ago when they were called WOLF 🐺. Same place. I believe made in Korea by World Instrument Co who makes ESP LTD if not mistaken. Really nice guitars with black ebony Fretboards. Pickups are a bit microphonic for my taste, but an easy swap. What bridges are used on these ? Could you tell me the maker of the Pots, and if they should be replaced ? Would you change the Bridge and Tailpiece ? Thank You ! I just got a Peterson Strobe Tuner HD to tackle intonation so this is nice. ✌️
No guitar has perfect but we try to get it as close as we can. That’s why Steve Vai has frets the are compensated. It’s pretty interesting if you check out his guitar video. Some people tune their guitars to split the difference like James Taylor. Tim Pierce actually tuned his guitar specialty to be perfect around fifth fret to get the Micheal Jackson black or white riff sport on for the record. It’s why some people say the guitar is an imperfect instrument.
Is that a Heathkit Sixer on the shelf behind you? The worst intonation was on my first guitar. It was 50 cents off on all 6 strings, and that was with the saddles adjusted as far as they would go! Side note, I played Let it go during my evening jam today... I was a little surprised when I started watching your video an you were playing it too! Great video, BTW. 73
@@GuitarMAXMusic Agreed. The rest of the guitar, (a LP copy),was pretty decent quality, and even had genuine DiMarzio pickups. QSL on the Two'er. I have a Two'er, a Six'er, and a Ten'er in my collection. 🙂 Thanks for the reply!!
that guitar does sound good and set up right . I thought it was going to be something different at first , some kind of boost or equalize. intonation and harmonics , sounds great .
Most guitars, especially anything coming out of Asia, are going to need a set up job to get proper intonation. It's not just the bridge saddles that need adjusting, it's the nut. The action at the nut is always too high and all of the notes at the first fret are sharp. Also, I've found that many Epiphone guitars simply cannot be intonated properly. The bridge is not far back enough to get the 12th fret octaves in tune.
Hi Max . Wow !! Something finally to replace my desire for a third ridiculously expensive Gibson Les Paul . And from what you said , it has everything that I want . I went thru the Video twice and didn't hear you specify the Fret material . I'm hoping they are Stainless Steel . But anyway , thanks for making this Video and sharing this info . I hope you're doing well and staying safe Max . Take care . 😃🎸😃
Waiting for them to start selling accessories. They told me "not yet". So it seems like they will eventually in the near/late future. I need to order a pick guard and hardware for another WLP I recently bought used. As for anyone out there that has a WLP and a Gibson Les Paul, I'm wondering, are the measurements exactly the same?
My secret weapon is a Telecaster. It has a longer scale length than an LP-style, stays in tune forever, and the intonation is excellent all the way up and down the frets, and it’s not really affected by how hard I push on the strings. This is impressive considering that it uses the old-fashioned barrel-style saddles. All other guitars sound out of tune to me.
The volute looks nice on the Les Paul copy. I wish Gibson would put them on their guitars. Would make the guitars more aesthetic looking and collectively, would save musicians thousands of dollars in repairs.
While watching that video I was honestly believing that it'd be a couple thousands but it's actually way less than anticipated, that's interesting stuff 👀
What do think of the Canadian guy (StringWorks) who is big on custom compensated nuts? In his demos no matter where or what form he uses it sounds perfect.
The worst intonation I ever saw was on a brand new guitar where it was about a quarter-step out of tune by the THIRD fret. Took it to my guitar tech and turns out the neck had to be shimmed. And this was not a super cheap guitar - around six or seven hundred dollars from a fairly well known brand.
Im definitely going to look into getting myself a Fender GTX100 for studio work, as well as (primarily though, use it for Gear/Guitar Reviews 😁🎸🎶🤘🏻😈🤘🏻💯💪🏻😁🎸
An Ibanez JS700. It was so bad I sold it. Could not be corrected without modification and you just don’t plug and drill a Joe Satriani model. The guy I sold it to was a cowboy chord only player, so it was fine for him.
@@GuitarMAXMusic they had essentially a stop bar bridge like a Les Paul Jr and while it was adjustable, it wasn’t placed right and wouldn’t intonate. Was told my option was a redrill (kill the value) or live with it. I couldn’t do either
I have found a problem with every guitar I play. When I bend the G string past the 12th fret and the B string was hit and is still ringing along in the background, the bent G string pulls the B string flat very much so. I am using 11 size strings and bending them seems to pull the neck out of tune. Do you know of a remedy for this? I seem to need a stronger neck altogether somehow.
The worst intonation I ever had was when I knew nothing about scale length and tried to turn my squire strat into a "bowed guitar" by placing an arched piece of wood in front of the bridge... it also made the action terrible.
Worst intonation I have ever had? I put a vintage 22 fret Kramer neck onto a Hondo II stratofaker body. The Kramer neck wasn't cut to fit into a 21 fret neck pocket, to it was around a 25 13/16" scale instead of 25 1/2". Open tuning was good, then a G chord was horrid.
FYI, a guitar's intonation is GREATLY Affected by string(s) age/condition. If your guitar sounds like it's out of intonation and the strings are old, then its time for a new set of strings. One of the factors that determines a strings intonation is the string's overall diameter. Corrosion, gunk and even fret wear all contribute to poor intonation. The very first step to checking your guitar's intonation is installing a brand new set of strings. Also, if you find its only one string that is out of intonation, it is probably the string you are playing most often! I'm kind of surprised MAX didn't mention this important detail concerning intonation!
@alexandremoreira599 try adjusting the pressure on the strings. It could be old string. Try adjusting the action (string height). Make sure the truss rod is adjusted correctly....Make sure you pull each string snug and then tune the entire guitar everytime you make an adjustment. If none of that works then there's probably something wrong with the neck
Nigel's amp goes to 11, that is one more than 10, my guitar goes to "H" which is one and half (I think) more notes than any other instrument. J:>o :>O :>)
Note: no guitar has perfect intonation...the guitar is a compromise instrument where no fretted note will ever be absolutely perfect. That said, setting the intonation on any particular guitar is a critical step in making it sound as good as it can.
This is fantastic Max. Intonation is an overlooked subject that should be discussed more. I’m glad you did a video on it!!!

Don't wolves have paws? 🐾🐾🐺
@@obbor4 wolves yes, All In One, no.
Probably outside the scope of an affordable guitar channel, but I really like the idea of the Evertune bridge.
Another guitar going on my wish list. Thanks, Max
This.... it would save people tons of money
Wait until you find out that there’s already tons of videos on that.
@teenlaqueefa8339 Exactly. I'm not sure why the other dude is ripping ass on Max. I think that Max is awesome.
Great info video. Cool jam man ! Thanks.
Your intro riffs are underrated 😊
Glad you like them!
@@GuitarMAXMusic always 💯🤟
Fantastic groove intro Max! 👍 👊 absolutely intonation important
Nice "LOUDNESS" riff there Max!
Thank you!
Sounds beautiful
No guitar has perfect but we try to get it as close as we can. That’s why Steve Vai has frets the are compensated. It’s pretty interesting if you check out his guitar video. Some people tune their guitars to split the difference like James Taylor. Tim Pierce actually tuned his guitar specialty to be perfect around fifth fret to get the Micheal Jackson black or white riff sport on for the record. It’s why some people say the guitar is an imperfect instrument.
Let it go!
Cool introduction....
Could you tell me about Wolf Guitars and AIO or AIO/Wolf? Same thing? I watched your video on Wolf guitars some time ago. Now I am seeing AIO.
Still have my Wolf LP, love it....sitting down.
Awesome! But that's horrible intonation. The radio is a Heathkit Twoer! It's not working at the moment though.
@@GuitarMAXMusic Agreed. The rest of the guitar, (a LP copy),was pretty decent quality, and even had genuine DiMarzio pickups. QSL on the Two'er. I have a Two'er, a Six'er, and a Ten'er in my collection. 🙂
Thanks for the reply!!
Well done, sir.
2 minutes in and I'm thinking this pretty much a none issue. All my guitars are pretty spot on.
Very nice definition of intonation, Max ✨️ Rock on! 🎶🎸🎶 ArtyThan ☆♡☆
I have that guitar in ice tea burst. Same fret inlays gokd hardware its my favorite guitar.
that guitar does sound good and set up right .
Hope you make a video how to tune intonation.
While watching that video I was honestly believing that it'd be a couple thousands but it's actually way less than anticipated, that's interesting stuff 👀
Interesting Max, thanks for the info.
It'd be nice if they had a couple in LA area guitar shops to try out.
The AIO shop is in La Canada Flintridge, just to the northeast of LA.
Ouch!!
One thing i wish i had of taken more seriously at a young age is guitar maintenance. Learn to be my own tech.
Good point!
Im definitely going to look into getting myself a Fender GTX100 for studio work, as well as (primarily though, use it for Gear/Guitar Reviews 😁🎸🎶🤘🏻😈🤘🏻💯💪🏻😁🎸
thought that was my Gibson Custom Shop ’68 Les Paul Custom Reissue Triburst until i watched the video haha looks nice :)
What thickness pick do you prefer?
1mm.
What is the difference from the SC series and the Wolf series?
The headstock shape, the fretboard material, and the available colors.
That guitar looks awesome
Thanks, always interesting. I appreciate your wisdom. 🤘
Maybe I missed something but where in the video it explained HOW the guitar get this good intonation?
An Ibanez JS700. It was so bad I sold it. Could not be corrected without modification and you just don’t plug and drill a Joe Satriani model. The guy I sold it to was a cowboy chord only player, so it was fine for him.
Wow! Surprised to hear it was an Ibanez!
You mentioned great guitar fo beginners but how are they for pro or semi pro players?
They're great for everyone. I just mean this is a goos guitar to start with because it has great intonation and that gets you off on the right foot.
@@GuitarMAXMusic thanks for the reply 🙏 👍 😀
Do you give online lessons if so how much. Thanks.
I was thinking it would be the toggle switch with volume blending ?
I love wolf wlp & aio wolf 400
I own the same AIO but different color. Les Paul studio for a third of the price ❤
Good call!
The worst intonation I ever had was when I knew nothing about scale length and tried to turn my squire strat into a "bowed guitar" by placing an arched piece of wood in front of the bridge... it also made the action terrible.
You referredto going down the neck while going upthe neck?
The aio lp guitars look very similar to firefly. With the double bound body and other similarities. I wonder if they are made in the same factory.
I'm confident they are not made in the same factory.
Great start with Loudness! Also, 666th like! Keep doing what you do!!!
Thanks a ton!
Loudness rules
MZA!
You should get a Marshall then. I goes one more loud.
@@JohnHWelch63 i got a little one. 30w Its ok. Needs more oomph
@@plisskenationbackfromthede3657 Does it go to 11, like the one on This is Spinal Tap? One more loud! 🤣🤣
@@plisskenationbackfromthede3657 Sorry, I thought you would get the Spinal Tap reference about his Marshall's volume going to 11 instead of 10. 🤣
If good guitars are bad for your ears, then AIO guitars are bad ones?
You might want to re-try what's in the description box.
at least there is chorus and delay chain on an intonation and pitch demonstration.
Have 2 Wolf’s and one AOI, good guitars
wish they make a 50s or a 59 neck
What should I change on my bad entonation guitar to get it better?
Adjust the saddle screws to shorten or lengththe string a little. Open notes should match the 12th fretted notes.
@@Whowhatwhere99 at 12th it matches, but between is out of tune
@alexandremoreira599 try adjusting the pressure on the strings. It could be old string. Try adjusting the action (string height). Make sure the truss rod is adjusted correctly....Make sure you pull each string snug and then tune the entire guitar everytime you make an adjustment. If none of that works then there's probably something wrong with the neck
@@Whowhatwhere99 thank you a lot!!
Nigel's amp goes to 11, that is one more than 10, my guitar goes to "H" which is one and half (I think) more notes than any other instrument. J:>o :>O :>)
Nice Paul
Was that first song Let it go by Loudness 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼😃
Yeah, I was just gonna sing LET IT GO lol
Intonation isn’t a “feature” of a guitar. 😂
that binding is a little too much for me...
Dint realise that you were into Amateur Radio !! G4TIH
Note: no guitar has perfect intonation...the guitar is a compromise instrument where no fretted note will ever be absolutely perfect. That said, setting the intonation on any particular guitar is a critical step in making it sound as good as it can.
That is a setup issue.
