Ok idk how your channel isn't bigger .. absolutely love your style of "review" .. a lot of effort and passion 👏 👌 just watched a bunch of videos.. while I don't collect 1/6 at all I'm more into 1/12 I still enjoyed the videos
Thanks, I definitely appreciate it. Lots of cool stuff on the horizon. And with any luck, the channel will start to find its audience over the next year.
I love mezco but wish they didn’t go this route. I’m not going to handle mine much thanks to this video. So thank you. I would have been fine with a plastic version from mezco with just the bendy wire tail
Agreed. I like seeing innovation, it pushes the industry forward... I just don't like being the product tester. Honestly, just using a better frame and a medical (or food) grade silicone would have made a huge QC difference. The figure was already vastly overpriced at release, so that's what we should have been paying for.
I would like mezco to do more alien figures. But without the seamless stuff. I would really like to see an AVP alien with swappable heads for grid and the alien from avpr, because those aliens were almost the same as the first AvP, besides the ridged head.
Very good analysis of the figure. I think the biggest issues were the hips like you stated and the fact that the figure wasn't as well thought as we thought. It reminds me of what Hot Toys tried to do with their 1/6 alien warrior. They also used a seamless body design, but some collectors reported that it degraded two years after purchase. I'm not sure how long it can last, but if you don't move anything, then there should be no problem.
I have a hot toys Mars Attacks figure with rubber sleeves and legs. The plastic torso, head, feet/hands, and helmet remain pristine but the rubber has cracked and looks awful. What should be an incredible figure is only going to last if I can figure out how to replace the legs and sleeves. Rubber anything on action figures is folly because it never lasts.
Is it also a rubber body? I wouldn't have thought that they would have gone that way. I'm sorry to hear about the failure. Unfortunately, that design makes these things more like models than posable figures.
@@strangeform Yeah. The section where you explained the ratchet on the thigh demonstrates how mine could have broken. I think they used the same structure for that bicep swivel. That cylinder with the slit may have given way and opened up allowing the rod with the ratchet to slip out. Your video helps me a lot if I ever decide to cut the arm apart and fix it.
Interesting to see inside this figure. I’ve never seen a figure molded around an armature like that before. I had intended to leave mine boxed, because I’ve already got enough open Big Chaps. Now I definitely am. Thanks for the heads up.
Great info, Dude. I have been thinking about buying this guy at my local comic store for a while now. I think I'll wait a bit a longer. Are you going to do a 1989 batman video?
First I gotta praise your storytelling and pacing for the video, great work, also very very informative! love the vibes I never been a big fan of rubber figures because of issues like this, I know they can look better than plastic but for now my xenomorphs will be all Neca
Thanks for the praise. And, yeah, especially if you live in a humid climate. I moved from Wa to Massachusetts and wasn't prepared for the summers here. I had never even thought of buying a dehumidifier, but the summers are an assault on your collectibles, namely anything with rubber, vinyl, soft plastic, or latex. And it's not just rubber rot but several different types of mold that can destroy your investments. A lot of the companies that make these design choices are from Asia, so they definitely know the score when it comes to climate and material deterioration.
Such a bummer. I don't even have my figure yet (it get shipped later in Europe) and was so exited about it after your review. I have the Mezco Jungle Hunter already and it has some flaws as well - what people complain about the most is the paintjob - I will just repaint him. But seems like Mezco's first Alien and Predator series is a minor failure. Still I won't cancel my preorder, after having it preordered for almost a year, maybe I get lucky and the factory worker who put mine together was awake and halway sober😊. I love your videos, very informative, very entertaining and overall so superp executed💚💚💚 NEVER STOP VIDEOING!
Well. it's safe to say Mezco dropped the ball on THIS ONE Big time. this is why i hate those Phicen Bodies. ive wanted to make my own stop motion puppets since i was literally 13 years old. im now 40. me and my brother used to sit up at nights before the internet and just plan out how one would be made, and we came up with how to avoid a lot of these issues back then.. its beyond me that companies that make millions of dollars a year still haven't been able to figure them out. not to mention a "Rubber" body is always a bad idea. for a "Rubber" Body to work it has to be A and B Platinum SILICONE. not hot melt "Rubber" that shit is just going to Rot. Platinum silicone has been tested under extreme conditions and is projected to last a minimum of 80 YEARS. that's why those Silicone Mask companies do so well, even with the extremely soft silicone rubber. the paint doesn't peel off cause nothing sticks to silicone but silicone, so they paint it with thinned down silicone. rubber? the paint will rub right off in no time. it'll dry rot. crack, rip, its not worth it. the people who buy the figures will just end up hating the company they bought em from cause the end product won't last longer than a fart in the wind.. its just sad.
I was shocked that it wasn't silicone, but that also would've increased the price quite a bit. The Phicen bodies are hit and miss, but the Armature inside them ( especially the new ones ) are some of the most well-crafted poseable skeletons out there, I've actually known a few people over the years who purchase the dolls just to strip out the armature to be used for stop motion. They definitely have better hip joints than this one. Like I said elsewhere in the comments, I don't think I would've minded classical joints, as that would be where MEZCO's expertise lie.
Had my concerns about this design, thx for saving me. I despise owning toys that aren't fit for the purpose, the writing was on the wall with this one.
I just opened mine and had indications of the same issue (left leg was loose and got looser after just a few minutes of posing)-plus a possibly worse one: the first time I bent the legs forward, the suit split in the back where the tail base meets the hips. This split / gap was visible on both hips after bending the legs just 45 degrees up. My guess is that whatever glue or bond was supposed to keep the suit edge adhered to the tail base wasn’t properly applied-or it could also be a true tear in the rubber. It’s hard to say given how many edges / glued parts are in that area. Disappointed at the low quality and bad durability, and I’ll be returning it. I think this figure could’ve had the legs designed as separate pieces like the arms, and still benefited from the seamless look in the elbows and knees while keeping the hips durable with a standard ball joint. The flared top “edges” of the thighs could’ve covered most of the hip ball joints and still looked great. It’s such a shame because the sculpt, especially the head and torso, is beautiful.
Absolutely loved this video and the information you've shared. I enjoyed your reviewing style and will definitely subscribe to you. I definitely gave the video a "like" and I look forward to seeing more content from you. Many thanks!
An invaluable reference video, thank you for making this. I was expecting the engineering of the inner armature to be much more smooth and refined than it is. I'm surprised at how cobbled together and rough the final product is, almost like it's made of spare parts. The overall lack of durability is baffling. It begs the question of why Mezco even bothered with a seamless design.
Thanks! and yeah, it seems like at the very least they should have gone over and talked to the Phicen people, who basically have this kind of Inner armature down to a science.
@strangeform I wonder if Mez being in the biz,had possibly been given some advice on how phicen do their figures?,i would be surprised to think he wouldn't or couldn't find out the info he needed from sources that have been built up over his time in the figure game?! 🤔
@@paulmaynard1384 I'd be surprised if he wouldn't or couldn't find out that info as well, and yet here we are. I don't think it's a question of a lack of information, but rather one of greed and a lack of integrity. It's evident that someone at Mezco made the conscious decision to cheap out on this figure.
@Synthetic_Strigiforme Quite possibly,& given the new (to Mezco) body tech being used was a cost cutting exercise?!,hopefully when used again Mez will change the underbody, interesting video btw 👍
@@paulmaynard1384 Make no mistake, it's not just the engineering (or more aptly, the lack thereof) of the inner armature which is indicative of cost cutting, but the construction of the entire figure. Rubber instead of silicone, paint which easily rubs off, the lump of protruding plastic left on the inside of the front of the dome, it's all evidence of shoddy craftsmanship specifically designed to seem impressive on the surface, while sacrificing any real care for accuracy, functionality, or durability.
Idk... I feel like if theres something that doesn't need a rubber suit to hide the joints, its the xenomorph. Like, its pretty much a skeleton on the outside, and kind of has all the joint cuts in the deisgn. Good video though, interesting to see one of these dismantled
While that might be true from an in-universe perspective, in reality the Big Chap existed only as a man in a costume so I guess that's the look they were chasing here.
Dude, you are hilarious! Great video! That spurting acid blood bit was a riot, lol. It looks like you could definitely fix an issue like this with a small incision and some threadlocker on the screw and nut. And, you should be able to reliably close the incision by putting some silicone sealant in there since silicone generally does a good job of bonding to silicone.
Should I buy this mezco figure? It’s more expensive than a neca one, and I fear it would be too fragile for its price, are those armature wire and rubber figures any good? How many years do they normally last?
The price is coming down, so it is getting closer to the neca figures. The problem is that no one knows how long those rubber bodies will last, because they are so new. One of mine failed right away, I haven't really touched the replacement, so it is lasting, but in its box. All told the mezco is more film accurate than Neca's, but if you can find it, get kotobukiya's Big Chap. The kotobukiya isn't posable, but it is the best figure at that scale. After that, the Mafex Big Chap is awesome. If you can pick up the mezco for $60 to $70 I would say go for it, but don't pay any more than that.
@@strangeformafter some consideration i think i only really want the neca ones and the mafex one, how fragile is it and what should i be worried about when handling it? Overall it looks to be an incredible figure that just needs more care compared to the others. And as far as i know the price range is 100 dollars?
@V1ncenz010 Unfortunately, my first one broke almost immediately, and the replacement they sent started to rot around the tail after having been kept in its box for a year (meaning that the rot happened without even being handled). If you find it cheap, go for it, but there are better options out there.
You’ve got so much more character, humour, and production value than the typical collector channel. I actually laughed during the tool switching bit, was not expecting that at all. Instant sub!
This one is actually really easy, just take a flathead watch screwdriver and carefully work it all the way around the seam. It's not glued in with anything industrial, and the plastic is really soft so it's difficult to scratch or damage when you're popping the dome off. I basically just cut off all the "tabs" with an X-Acto knife, Buffed the inside with a soft tip dremel attachment and then cut down the dome to follow the contour of the upper lip tube. Then I used a heat gun to reshape it slightly ( not too much, the plastic is very soft and it will melt into nothing quickly... Probably a hairdryer would be a safer option). After everything was where I wanted to be I just glued it back down with Loctite gel control superglue. Just take your time and make your cuts deliberately and slowly, constantly refitting it until you've walked into position.
@Lasiocarpa83 No, and it is difficult to get back on as well (that ball joint is tight and likes to move). You will also have to pull out and re-glue the tubing leading from the jaw to the back. The whole reason I left out showing this part is that I didn't want to encourage anyone to basically void their warranty, just in case they need send it back due to the main issue I was addressing. I had one to break down at no cost/risk to me, so I decided to see if I could make the dome fit better. If you do decide to modify the dome, my advice is to leave the head on while you do it.
Would this still be a recommendation? There's one at an lgs for 60, and I'd like a nice, accurate, premium, and articulated 6 in scale big chap, or would the other offerings be better?
Wow, thanks for making this. The thigh rotation on one of mine gave out, and I've been holding off slicing it open to take a look. Having that cap that slides into place is not something I would have ever expected, but now I'm thinking if that's the issue, I might be able to just make a small incision on the back and then push it into place (assuming the metal ratchets didn't just give out; that would kind of suck). Subbed, great video.
I have a hot toys Mars Attacks figure with rubber sleeves and legs. The plastic torso, head, feet/hands, and helmet remain pristine but the rubber has cracked and looks awful. Rubber anything on action figures is folly because it never lasts. Plastic sculpt with joint seams will always be preferable.
Thanks much for the post as interesting to learn what actually caused the leg fail issue. The prospect of having to perform surgery on the outer suit to access the skeleton, repair & then glue it back together (if comparable issue might arise) is enough for me to remove this guy from purchase consideration. After what you experienced with the leg issue where might this guy fit in an updated Big Chap top 10 list (you posted last year)? Nice work on the acid scene throwback when cutting into the suit👍
Thanks, and no problem. I was really happy when big bad toy store allowed me to keep the broken figure, as I would have just about died of curiosity not knowing how it happened, had I sent it back. As to where would be on my list, it's kind of a loaded question. If it worked perfectly I would still have it at number two, but unfortunately the road to the toy graveyard is paved with untested innovations. MEZCO isn't really known for soft rubber or silicone bodies, so I wish they would've stayed in their own wheelhouse, as I don't think I would've minded the joints If the paint job and detail was there. So, for now, this one will remain a sort of anomaly, a good-looking figure but I can't in good conscience suggest everyone should go out and get it. These toys represent a certain monetary investment, it's an awful feeling when they end up disintegrating within the first five years of ownership.
@@strangeform Yeah was hoping this was gonna be the definitive 1:12 scale Alien but unfortunately not imo. Guess I'll take a chance & pick up the Mafex instead & if I get one with loose joints (more likely than not from other reviews I've seen) just try & fix those myself. Thanks again for the very helpful post as much appreciated.
Great vid. I'm intrigued by the mechanics and engineering of these high end figures. Never had the balls to break one down the way you did. I don't think I'd do it even if I had an extra. Lol. Good stuff all around.
Fantastic tear down, after seeing this I'm glad I cancelled my preorder. It looks good, but looks are only skin deep. That inner skeleton is rough and does not look like it will stand the rest of time.
I think both good and bad, this is one will be be a topic of debate over the next few years. Kind of like how some people had their Hot toys ED-209 dome rot away to nothing, and others didn't have any problem at all ( a lot of it coming down to the region they lived in, humidity, and dust). I really do not understand allowing the rubber to seep into the frame, but who knows, maybe this one will surprise everyone. I still think the best advice is to baby the heck out of it, and touch it with your fingers as little as possible as (in just a short time) I can already see some evidence of breakdown on mine.
Do you believe this will be a widespread issue or QC issue, would you still personally recommend it? Hope your BBTS replacement is better, would love to see an update on this! Thanks for sharing.
Technically yes the replacement is in better condition, the hip joints are a little looser than makes me comfortable ( knowing what's going on inside). Unfortunately I think this one is going to have to be babied more than most figures, and even then I don't know how the rubber is going to hold up. One thing that annoys me about fragile poseable figures is, if you can't pose it why not just get a statue? I'm probably going to come back to this one when some time has passed to see how mine held up, and asked the community how everyone else's fared.
I'm glad you made this video but dang it! Now I want to return mine. I agree, if you can't play with and pose it because the system will eventually fail, why have it?
Opened mine last night and played with it a bit, I was careful just for the fact that it’s a rubber body and was afraid to break or tear something, I didn’t like that the articulation was so stiff tho, not too fun to play with, but a very nice display piece, after your warning I’ll be hesitant to play with it more or even change its pose, very cool but if I can’t really do much with it I should have gotten a statue instead
As of the time of posting this comment, the Mezco Aliens are on sale over at BBTS. Seems they can't get rid of them. I wonder if the interest on this figure fell off a cliff once the issues present in it began to circulate around the Internet, which in turn made would-be buyers look elsewhere?
Mine worked perfectly until it suddenly didn't. If you have seen my original video on it, I was singing its praises. I was lucky that big bad toy store let me keep the defective unit, I just caution you and anyone else to be careful with those hip joints. The experience has turned me off of buying mezco's 89 Batman, but I don't discourage anyone from getting them. Just go in with eyes open.
Ah sorry to hear that. Just been going by the recommendations that Mezco included and I figured the hips shouldn't be overextended. Same goes for Batman.
All that wasted energy on a fragile rubber suit and finicky metal body when they could’ve just made the whole thing in plastic and nobody would’ve complained. I’ll never understand Mezco sometimes.
At the end of the day, I think that they were trying to "innovate." Sometimes that pays off. Sometimes, it doesn't. But when you are doing something so different, you shouldn't make your customers the product testers.
@@strangeform I’ve also been meaning to ask as I’ve seen it across a lot of alien stuff on your channel, what is that kind of bent over praying looking pose it’s in?
@thebaker525 Nine times out of ten (on product and image descriptions), it's called the "Bowing" Alien, Big Chap, xenomorph, and so on. I don't know if this is what the image was originally called, or the idea gained popularity after the Topps’ Fright Flicks Cards did the "thank you, thank you! " joke.
Loved the video and thank you for the info!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻My Alien gets here tomorrow hopefully and now I know what to look for.
Thank you so much for making this video! But, I am wondering, how did you remove the dome?
I'd be interested in seeing a tutorial for how to do this as well.
@@strangeform Thank you for the very detailed instructions!
@@strangeform One more question...Was the head easy to remove?
@Lasiocarpa83 No, and it is difficult to get back on as well (that ball joint is tight and likes to move). You will also have to pull out and re-glue the tubing leading from the jaw to the back. The whole reason I left out showing this part is that I didn't want to encourage anyone to basically void their warranty, just in case they need send it back due to the main issue I was addressing. I had one to break down at no cost/risk to me, so I decided to see if I could make the dome fit better. If you do decide to modify the dome, my advice is to leave the head on while you do it.
Sorry for the necropsy, but how have these figures aged? Any other problems?
Would this still be a recommendation? There's one at an lgs for 60, and I'd like a nice, accurate, premium, and articulated 6 in scale big chap, or would the other offerings be better?
Wow, thanks for making this. The thigh rotation on one of mine gave out, and I've been holding off slicing it open to take a look. Having that cap that slides into place is not something I would have ever expected, but now I'm thinking if that's the issue, I might be able to just make a small incision on the back and then push it into place (assuming the metal ratchets didn't just give out; that would kind of suck).
Subbed, great video.
Super Informative! Thank you!
This was great!!!

Wow, well done!
Brilliant!
I have the same problem with my figure on the right leg
Do you think it will happen to every figure and do you still recommend it ?
i dont belive so. Im very happy with the purchase, best articulated big chap.
@@danielmarcus8321 yeah i have preorder it and i was super excited but if you got problem with it please tell me ;)
@@JeSuisPaul no problems so far iv had it a week now. Im not messing around to much with it, i posed it and left it. its a beautiful figure.
@@strangeform what kind of breakdown can you see, can you make an update for the new one after some week ?
Do you believe this will be a widespread issue or QC issue, would you still personally recommend it?
Hope your BBTS replacement is better, would love to see an update on this! Thanks for sharing.
theres really no way of the replacement being better. It’s a design flaw so it’ll be the same across the board
@@guyster3709 maybe this is just a problem of frabication that made the skeleton weaker and the other figure are okay.
There is a saying of Patrick Bateman but there’s also a saying the joker says it’s why so serious
Lmaooo this was amazing!!!!!
Great video !
Rip expensive bad big chap 😂
As of the time of posting this comment, the Mezco Aliens are on sale over at BBTS. Seems they can't get rid of them.
I wonder if the interest on this figure fell off a cliff once the issues present in it began to circulate around the Internet, which in turn made would-be buyers look elsewhere?
Awesome 🤘🏼
You can dismantle a Mattel figure from the Hammond collection line the giganote or the t rex greetings from Lima Peru
Not sure how accurate the title is since mine works great but nice vid
Mine worked perfectly until it suddenly didn't. If you have seen my original video on it, I was singing its praises. I was lucky that big bad toy store let me keep the defective unit, I just caution you and anyone else to be careful with those hip joints. The experience has turned me off of buying mezco's 89 Batman, but I don't discourage anyone from getting them. Just go in with eyes open.
Ah sorry to hear that. Just been going by the recommendations that Mezco included and I figured the hips shouldn't be overextended. Same goes for Batman.
hope that crap doesn't eat through the hull...whatever you do don't get under it 💀
Why messco didnt use a vinyl skeleton and seems in the suit like neca is suicide for the piece 👍
hard pass but informative
This is the concerning part with the mezco Batman 89 figure soon I’ll be dissecting mine
Now do the haslab three and three-quarter inch GI Joe garbage they just sent out
All that wasted energy on a fragile rubber suit and finicky metal body when they could’ve just made the whole thing in plastic and nobody would’ve complained.
" joke. The image was from a 1979 press junket promotional photo shoot.
@@strangeform interesting!
