Wow I enjoyed that! Having the video camera mounted on your DSLR made me feel like I was right there shooting. I kept finding myself saying, "nice!" and feeling that adrenaline rush, just like I would have if I was there!
Steve, that looks like a fun day! Beautiful light! I like the black and whites. My favorite is the full body view of the otter up on the ice. Beautiful!
Great outing Steve. You are so enthusiastic about just being out in such beautiful surroundings.and your skill and eye for photography allows you to share with all of us who will probably never see these magnificent animals in the wild. Thank you!
When the first black-and-white came up I thought "That is it". But the colors in the last image are just plain magical so it became my favorite. River otters cuteness is only surpassed by sea otters in my opinion.
Spectacular scenery, beautiful photos, and a terrific video! And cute, whimsical otters to boot! Cant go wrong. Only one request....please, please, please send some of that wonderful snow to Boise! Our winter has been warm and pretty much snowless. Makes me sad ):
I think these otters enjoyed being photographed almost as much as you appear to enjoy them collectively as a subject. Fun to watch you watching them. The few otters I've found on the Florida panhandle seem a bit more shy, out just before dawn and gone just as the light is getting good. Beautiful video. Thanks.
Yes, I can say you had a lots of fun chasing them , not only photographing:) And that's what the photography adventure is all about:) I laughed when you said: Jesus, after falling waist deep in the snow. Most people say different word:) Thank you for taking us on your trip and sharing with us the beauty of the cute otters in the river.
Hi Steve, that was one of my favorite videos just gorgeous images. Would love to see you and Morten Hilmer out there shooting together. My two favorite wildlife photographers. Now that would be awesome. Joe
Great job there Steve. AWESOME photos! You may have to get snowshoes or cross country skis to help to Keep Up with those critters! Thank you again for sharing!
Well done Steve. I saw a family of them last year on a stretch of the Deschutes River and they are quick and hard to keep up with. They look like they are just having a great time when they are swimming around. That’s quite the video set up. You got a good cardio workout in the snow and some bicep work in as well lugging that around.
Oh man, otters! One of my favorite animals. Such spectacular pictures. However, please look into getting a pair of snowshoes! Breaking through the snow like that can result in a broken leg. Many years ago, I helped carry someone off a mountain who had a compound leg fracture from walking through the woods. It took about twelve of us. Real bad scene, blood dripping all over the snow. These days you can get compact trail running snowshoes with quick release bindings.
Steve, I sometimes find that snowshoes aren't all that well known outside of the northeast US and Canada. Glad to hear that you know and use them. However, weak spots on hard crust are often caused by rocks or downed logs under the snow. When your leg suddenly breaks through the snow near such an obstacle, bad things can happen. Again, thanks for the super footage!
What a cool experience that must've been at 3:02 seeing the otters swimming down stream straight at you! Nice music choice for that part too - magical :)
Hi Steve. Well put together as always. I know the area your in and can’t believe you got the clear areas to shoot in. Otters are a lot of fun to shoot but they sure can wear you out quickly🤪
Beautiful. I absolutely love seeing your enthusiasm and excitement when you are in the moment. That enthusiasm and excitement is something that I have found that very few understand and/or appreciate. ❤❤
Awesome videio. I just got my first River otters in thirty years of looking for them I got them at my favorite Park Huntely Meadows Park in Virginia. Its an awesome experience.
So fun! You got some amazing photos from this encounter, well worth the chase. I love the one at 9:50. I saw an otter for the first time a couple of weeks ago, you're right that they are cute, loved the experience!
Another great video. Loved the swimming shots with the curve of the water. Either shot a while ago or your snowpack isn’t that high this year. Be careful jogging through the willows and back eddies, too easy to break a leg (or lens) or have to make a cold slog back to the car. Thanks 😊
Incredible footage Steve!! And the fact that you were holding a 600mm selfie stick. I was so excited for you when they swam up. I was hoping the would peek over the snow at ya 😁 Thanks for sharing your experiences! Cheers ☺️
I've said it before on here Steve and I'll say it again, I can't get over just how cooperative your wildlife is out there. Here in Wales it is almost unheard of to get images of otters in the open in good light. My best otter images have had to be shot wide open and at very slow speeds even with high ISO!! Absolutely stunning scenery (we don't get much snow here in West Wales) and some great images of one of my all time favourite mammals. Love it.
Well Steve, I don’t know how many different ways you can say , friggin awesome. Friggin awesome it was. The only thing that would have made this video better for me is if I had been there. Thanks for making and sharing it.🙂
Well, I hate to be a broken record with minimalist black & white photos, it’s not to difficult to know which of those shots I prefer. Anyway, what a fantastic opportunity to catch those amazing critters. Here’s to me getting a similar opportunity with Great Gray and Northern Hawk Owls when I head up north to Zac Sim Bog here in MN this weekend.
Steve Crotty Just got back from Sax-Zim yesterday. Was a little disappointing. I hit it hard for two days and never saw a Great Gray. Saw a Hawk Owl but too far away to shoot. I did get some shots of a Boreal Owl from close range though. Hope you have better luck. I do have to say the habitat there is ideal.
Hi, Steve, I have been following your nature photography many years, really enjoy your adventure as if I were with you. I wonder how can you make the video of your trip while you are taking a picture at the same time, do you have an assistant does the recording at the same time? Steve
Steve Mattheis Hi, Steve, Thank you for the reply. I guess you use an action camera such as GoPro for taking your action video, while you use Nikon for taking still picture on your field trip. BTW, your pictures are excellent! Steve
Hi Steve, Great video how much would it cost me to buy your book and send it to Glasgow Scotland. Would love to come to Jackson Hole to do some Photography, Saving so I can afford it.
If you order it on my website, you can see the shipping cost before you actually place the order. But it will be very expensive unfortunately... There is no cheap way to get it there.
What a treat. Thanks Steve.

Thanks!👍

Thanks!👍

That would be great! I've messaged him, he's very busy (and on the other side of the world...)
@@SteveMattheis Yes He's in Denmark and does travel a lot, but still would be great to see you two together sometime in the future.
My two favorites as well. The two of them together would be awesome!
@@guameimei1 Don't know if they can with their schedules get together, but it sure would be fun to see if they can.
Loved it! Thanks for another awesome first person shooter experience.
👍👍
They are so cute.. your videos are great. Thank you.
Thanks!👍
A great video thanks for sharing what looks like a fantastic moment ! And the photos are gorgeous...
Thanks!👍
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!! And the snowy landscape there was just spectacular!!! Thanks for sharing!
Great adventure and beautiful photos!
Thanks!
I am so amazed that you were able to get as close as you did. It didn’t seem as though the shutter noise from the 850 was in any way distracting them.
Sometimes they let you into their world (and sometimes they don't)
Another that was AWESOME!!! That was exciting stuff even from the comfort of my couch!!
Thanks!👍
Great job there Steve. AWESOME photos! You may have to get snowshoes or cross country skis to help to Keep Up with those critters! Thank you again for sharing!
Haha yes I have both but it's even more crap to carry while vlogging so it makes thinks even more difficult...
Excellent photos. Awesome experience
Thanks!👍

I have snowshoes but the snowpack really wasn't deep enough yet to justify them. Except a few spots of course...

Another great video!
We have otters on the Dolores River and it is always a joy to see them. Absolutely beautiful footage you got of them Steve.
So good, thanks Steve

Hi Steve. Well put together as always. I know the area your in and can’t believe you got the clear areas to shoot in. Otters are a lot of fun to shoot but they sure can wear you out quickly🤪

Mark Jensen Heck, getting shots of Boreal would be worth a trip up.
Great stuff and brilliant images. Not sure about the vlog camera when you turn the 600 for portrait shots. A bit disconcerting maybe? 🥴
Vlogging is hard. Even harder with a600mm but that's what I had with me... 😬
Good stuff. I'm just going to have to come up there from Denver and take a day or two with you. I'm really itch'n to get out and get some photos!!!!!
Sounds great👍👍
I'd love to get an experience like that! The closest I've come is photographing muskrats. Thanks for sharing your adventure it was wonderful!
Keep trying👍👍 and thanks for watching!
OK, how much did it cost for the professional otter models? They were too cooperative... great vlog! 👍
It only cost me lots of time... 👍
Hello Steve.
nice video.
I'd like to ask you what kind of head you use - to see at the beginning of the video.
Thank you.
That is a manfrotto 509 head . Honestly it's too heavy and I'd get the smaller version if I was to do it again...

I wish I had an assistant. It would make things so much easier and I'd miss far fewer shots because I'm shooting video...

Wonderful!!! That is sure a lot of hard work, and patience. Curious, can you make more money with a still or a video?
Maybe they were just testing the thumb down button worked cause I'm not sure why else. Good job Steve :)
Who knows...
What’s the name of the song playing in your intro? Thank you.
It really makes me wonder. Available on epidemicsound.com 👍
Great vid. What lense are you using with the 850 ?
This was the 600 f/4
Thanks
NOBODY owns more Eddie Bauer gear than Steve Mattheis
You might be correct...
That otter was so curious I thought he was going to come out and sniff you.
What the hell is up with the "selfie stick"? You can make video and talk without having to be on camera.
Ummm you should definitely unsubscribe
