Said my cousin to his little sister when he beat this game in the 80's: "If we leave the Nintendo on all night, Mario will wake up in the morning and it will be Super Mario 3!" He shuts off the game. She cries for an hour.
Sorry for taking 7 years to answer but thinking of it. She one day in 1989 woke up to that game being released. She might of not known it, but it happened. I hope that you and your siblings enjoyed that game for the 2 years under the spotlight.
The animation of wart being carried away looks better in the original game. Wart is right at the level of their hands rather than floating above their heads. There's also no cutoff graphics because the heroes stand on a cage suspended from the ceiling.
This ending blew my mind when I first earned & saw it back in the early '90s. Imagine, battling weird enemies in far out worlds in order to restore a princess to her throne, and winning it all! And then at the end, the entire experience was just a mere dream...
this ending always made me feel sad as a kid because i always thought what if my whole life, my world. was just a dream. and to this day it still do's...
Say what you will about this ending, but the song that plays during the whole sequence is always going to be one of my favorite gaming tunes of all time.
For those of us that saw this ending ,regardless of whether it was through legitimate or illegitimate endings, it was still pretty gosh darn magical. For me, personally, I used a Game Genie.
That was the best ending ever. For the time of 8bit that was freaking a masterpiece. One of very few games where the ending was well worth the struggle
So what if its a dream? Here is a man that for the last 25+ years has given us endless imaginative adventures. Even in his dreams: he's still giving us an adventure to go with him on. Personally: I say let him sleep. This adventure is over and he deserves a good rest. I'm going to let him sleep, so I can join him again next time.
I'm 29 years old, I have never played mario bros. but when I listen this song by chance, I almost cried. I can imagine people older than me listening to this song and reminiscing about their childhood. I have a similar memory and emotions.
I use to beat this game all the time before bed as a child so the music would play all night while I slept...now you can just click on UA-cam and find it lol
I don't know if its just me, but is anybody else just amazed by how cool the sleeping mario animation at the end is? I mean, that was made on a 8-bit catridge and you just didn't see animation like that in a video game at that time! Its looks like it was hand drawn and its so smooth, not choppy. I know i'm making a big deal about it, but from a technical side, thats still pretty cool to see!
This ending might SEEM like a dream, but the land of Subcon can only be visited THROUGH dreams. So everything in the game still happened, Mario just didn't do it physically.
Well suposidly the land they came from Mario can get through while dreaming, but it is a real place....it's Mario, don't ask questions, otherwise Game Theory will tell you how Peach is dead and Luigi is both Mario's brother and father.
Timesmanify I used to play this game a lot back in the day (Super Mario 3 more) and this was one of the games that was frustrating to beat till the end due to starting over when you lost. Super Mario 3 although more complex felt easier and you didn't have to start over. During the 80's since I didn't get to see the ending of SM2, since I ended up playing others and SM3 more, if I had seen this ending I would have been pissed that its all I get after the trouble of this game.
I know a lot of people didn't like this ending, but I was just blown away by sleeping Mario in the end. It was the sort of thing I didn't expect to see on the NES, it was like cartoon show quality.
Some errors can be found in the credits of the game: Ostro and Birdo have their names swapped. Hoopster is spelled "Hoopstar". Clawgrip is spelled "Clawglip". Tryclyde is spelled "Triclyde". These errors remain in Super Mario All-Stars, but are fixed in Super Mario Advance. However, all Japanese releases (dubbed Super Mario USA) do not change the names in the credits, instead keeping the Western localizations
I always felt kinda cheated in the end... You work so hard to get to the end and it all ends up a dream.. Meaning if Mario or anyone of the characters died or none of the hard work really mattered because in reality the game was just an illusion of Mario's mind....
Well lore wise, the place Mario was dreaming, subcon, was indeed a real place, a place in the dream world, so mario saved a place that was in the dream world
He does appear in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. They are different names in the US version, but the Japanese version gives them the same name.
The ending makes sense to me. Basically the entire environment in the game including the enemies, landscape, door style, and even picking and throwing veggies don't seem to exist in the other Mario games. SMB2 starts with your character falling into a strange new world, similar to a dream. Plus I read somewhere that Nintendo purchased some other game as a quick way to push out SMB2 on a tight schedule and budget. Change the main characters, add perhaps some other Mario items, put it all in a dream, and done.
I haven’t heard this ending since 2013 wow this has always been on my mind and I found it 7 yrs later I was 11 first listening to this and now I’m 18 an adult now wow time flies
Was this the first video game ever to have an ending that rolls out all the badguys you fight one by one and names them in a roll call manner? That's become pretty popular over the years.
I'm not complaining. It's always been one of my favorite bits of Super Mario World especially. Granted, the entirety of Super Mario World is my favorite bits, but still.
I have to say this is my fave Super Mario Ending of all time. For me in 1988 to see that being an Atari Kid where there were no endings to video games at all, that blew my mind. And in the day and age of Fallout 3 and other games to have real actors doing the voices to the end of video games rules.
This is one of the best endings ever: for one thing, it was one of the first videogames to have an actual ending besides "Game Over", and it was quite possibly the first game or movie to have a "it was all a dream" ending.
Yes! I think many people take for granted that type of ending for a game or movie as an unremarkable and common ending, but back in that time, it was sheer genius!
Such Nostalgia... I loved this game growing up, never really did beat it when I was younger but when I did, it gave me such feelings... I wonder to this day if Mario knew about this dream, went on this adventure, or even knew who it was that he faced as the final boss...
When I reached the ending as a kid I left my NES playing the Mario sleeping scene with music on the whole day. Which I loved. I knew I would have never seen it again. It was terribly hard a game to beat, for me.
Guess what? This wasn't a dream after all! The game has an obscure sequel for the Satellaview called BS Super Mario USA (or BS Super Mario Bros 2). It's mainly a reskin of the original game (with added audio drama) but the story says that Mario and friends move on, thinking Subcon was a dream, however, they find that Wart returned and overthrew the King of Subcon, and are able to head back there and defeat Wart again.
I wanna say I was 8 years old when I played this game. When I finally beat it I cried. For two reasons. The whole game and that last boss was HARD. And that ending music.
i loved this version of Mario..totally different from the 1st and the dream made it all make sense...im still shocked they didnt make another version lie this
I found out that this was never actually a Mario game to begin with. Google “Doki Doki Panic”, it’ll change your perspective on this game. They used the platform for Doki Doki Panic because they were in a hurry to get a sequel out by Christmas I believe.

That ending might explain why we never see wart, triclyde, mouser, the flame boss, pigits, or the crab boss return in any other mario game. They were just figments in mario's dream. They don't exist.
well that would be awesome cuz thanks to dream team we know that you can get inside and outside of other dreams in the mario universe, but it requires a special pillow from what i remember so i dunno. That would be if the mario & luigi games are even "canon" or something to the story
I think this is one of the best endings in Nintendo-Games. Yes all that was just a dream - but the music!! I use this tune on my mobile to wake me up in the morning! :)
My favorite Mario off all times; i have it when i Was a kid; my father bring it to me. The end and it music allways make me remind him. All NES games remind him to me.

I loled. Fantastic setup and delivery.
Mario was playing too much Doki Doki Panic!, and then he took a nap, and that's where we get Super Mario Bros 2.
He played doki doki panic to much he wish to be like them but he took a nap he dreamed about it the end
Sounds believable I've watched certain movies or tv shows and I've dreamt i was in them
fun fact: heart-pounding panic
That... Makes too much sense
I'm happy this ended up being considered a canonical Mario entry since it popularized Shy Guys. They're adorable!
That animation looks quite good for somewhat early NES.
JJUSSSTTT BEECAAUSSEE ITTTSSS OLLLDDD DDOSSSSEEENNNTTT MEEEANNN IT CANT HAAAVEEE GOOD ANNIIMAATIONNNN

Won this game when i was a child, 26 today and still feel emotional listening to the theme as well 😭
