I have a theory that the endless may have been leftover AI that got abandoned on earth which eventually got destroyed in the civil war. They expanded rapidly into the universe and had their whole civil war which produced the Cravers. During that time a small group that became the precursors of what we know now as the vaulters settled on a system and became what we know now as the United Empire. That would explain why there are 2 distinct human factions. During the early early expansion of the United Empire a young billionaire took off and decided to start an empire of clones of himself. That is what we know as Horatio. Another splinter group of vaulters also settled on another system but were the first ones to come in contact with the endless. However unlike the United Empire they gone a little too overboard with their industrialization and were becoming ill and dying from the poor state of their home world. They found and endless ruin and discovered tech to turn them into basically immortal robots. That is the Vodyani. One of them named went off to found the academy. The other factions are basically secondary factions that had no previous ties with the history of the vaulters and endless. So what I think really happened was Earth became so unlivable that the humans were forced to evacuate. That left behind the AI and machines that destroyed the planet which was probably done by the cravers. And the rest is history. The whole story basically revolves around the mysteries of what was left behind from the people of Earth.
