As always, beautiful work! If St. Maarten is "the greatest plane watching spot in the world" (as many people claim), Funchal has to be a close 2nd place. Plus, St. Maarten has neither the weather, the danger, nor the spectacular surroundings of Funchal. Keep up the great work---Madeira is the best watch on the net!
This is no joke, I was on that EasyJet Plane and I was scared to death. There were several passengers feeling sick due to stress. More, those passengers were supposed to arrive on sunday but the flight turned back to Lisbon due to the fog. So all the passengers were already very tired and scared from the day before. But I want to thank the EasyJet Crew and the pilot itself they did a wonderful job they gave all the informations and each time we had a missed approach the pilot explained everything, and what would be the next step. When our plane touched the ground they had a huge applause from the passengers. Thank you EASYJET for the wonderful JOB.
That pilot has some serious balls... The passengers by the window near the wings must have crapped themselves when the wings started to flap like they did at 3:54... Massive respect, and the biggest applause to the pilot.
Ricardo Jorge Nobrega Fernandes I only fly with TAP to Madeira but happy to.know that everything went well.with Easy Jet. Madeira is always scary but that was super scary :) I hope.you enjoyed your travel after all that...
That is absolutely crazy!! Seemed to be a big pocket of turbulence just over the start of the runway. Certainly threw most of the pilots off especially the TUIFly and Monarch pilots! Unbelievable catches, honestly one of the best plane spotting videos I've ever seen!!! :D
go arounds cost fuel as you need takeoff goaround power as well as losing time and strenous too as it needs a lot of concentration and is frustrating for all but necessary depending on technique amd sideforce
I'm Finnish and somehow once I saw that Finnair plane I immedietly knew it was going to land xD And did a good landing even tho it wobled around a lot.
Very nice video! Amazing go arounds!:) That one at 5:05 was a bit dangerous, wasn't it? I like the Luxair very much!:D Do you use a micromuff because we can't hear the wind that much?
finnair, scandinavian and icelandair pilots are the best trained for this kind of landings, they usually fly into powerful gusts of wind on zones near the artic with poor visibility, heavy rain and snow
Rumour has it that some UK theme parks are considering turning this into a ride! Puke bags at the ready people, not to mention some disposable hooded poncho's in case of projectile vomiting!
I have family in Madeira and I used to go visit them every summer, so I have been there 8 times. You never know what the conditions are going to be like on the day you travel there. The only time when I am truly afraid of flying is when I have to land there.
Fantastic video Sam, what ever goes on at FNC you're always there with your camera! Reading in the news here up north, that people landing there last monday, were shitting their pants! Thanks for a great clip.
I'm not a pilot, but i live in a similar environment to this with cliffs and sea bluffs interacting with strong onshore winds. The strong updrafts and turbulence in these locations sometimes have to be experienced to be believed. you notice that the final approach is just at the spot where these conditions are the strongest. Right over the edge of the bluff. Only experience and anticipation would make for a safe landing under these conditions. All others, WAVE OFF!
WOW, this Video is so awesome! 05:10 I'm not sure: Is the pilot a idiot (to not go around) or is he a genius? ;-) And I didn't knew it's possible to land on the RWY 23. I only saw 05 approaches on youtube...
Micke nyyssönen go around is never impossible when plane has its landing gear in air. of course if fuel is not an issue. there can't be the case when plane is still in air but moving so slow that go around is impossible. if plane is still in air, not falling down, it already means that it has enough speed to fly, because it is flying, not falling. if there appeared question about go around, or land, it is always much more safe to go around. except of course unless you have some mechanical issue that doesn't allow you to fly, which can be either low fuel, or failed engine, in all other situations, it is always much safer to go around and try once more to catch better angle.
Amazing conditions, I live in Tenerife and the same happened here lots of go-arounds! By the way, it's amazing how ALL Scandinavian airlines land first time and the other not...Skills!
+Oliver Philip Guhl I've been to Tenerife three times (once in Puerto de la Cruz and twice in Playa de las Americas) and Finnair pilots always land smoothly and on schedule despite the winds. :)
Wow, that TuiFly pilot at 5:00 had balls and some luck, grabbing control of the plane back at the last second. That could really have ended horribly! I would have shat my pants, were I a passenger on that plane.....then kissed the ground like the Pope upon exiting the aircraft. And that EasyJet that took three approaches......some persistent pilots there.
neuronbob Props to the EasyJet guys for a careful approach - and to flight planning for allowing them to carry the fuel to run a few missed approachs until they could drop it down nice and clean. With the TUIFly - amazing that is a stable approach. The US aviation market is very different - that kind of stuff on approach would be a go-around 9/10 times if not more. If you aren't reasonably wings level 2-300 feet up and keeping a modest set of pitch corrections folks tend to go around.
Nice video .. You can see exactly which driver a little guts and which not. Looks really really nice to really see this is it! These are another spectacular landings
BruceW W Most likely not, as an Airbus aircraft automatically switches its flight computers to direct law just before touchdown (meaning the sidestick movement is directly proportional to control deflection) - so it basically handles like any other aircraft by that stage. The Airbus missed approaches in this video could possibly be a result of the slightly different aerodynamics of the 'Bus compared to the Boeing, or simply just wind gusts resulting in excessive airspeed on short final. I saw plenty of Boeings going around as well ;) Cheers!
Fantastic! Kudos to the Finnair pilot! And additional kudos to the Easyjet pilot for making a solid second effort. Definitely subscribing to your channel!
This may sound silly, but for any pilots who are commenting on this great video, are these situations actually dangerous to the flights? I've always had a fear of flying and it will be really helpful to hear from those who can explain to me, thank you
I'm not a pilot but I can assure that they are trained for all kinds of situations. These Windshears, crosswinds and downwinds sure add a little danger factor to a landing, but that's why some of them decided to divert or go-around and try again. I live on this Island, and I can say to you, that every pilot who lands here needs to have some kind of extra certification to land at this airport. Also I should point out that there was only one big incident with this airport, before both expansions of the runway length. Getting back to your fear of flying: again, Pilots are trained to every kind of situations. Their responsability is the safety of everyone on board the aircraft. If they decide that it's NOT safe to land, they WON'T land. No matter how angry the people inside are that they can't arrive to their destination.
I'm a very junior pilot. Going around is drummed into you - unhappy with anything? Go around. If the approach isn't stable, go around. There are many layers of safety defense. The design of the airport and aircraft. The conditions being tested at different wind strengths. Very good weather reporting and prediction. The training and ongoing training of pilot. Ultimately, I think a fear of flying is quite natural. I fly because I've convinced myself that the risks are reasonable. It sounds like your seeking information to help do something similar and I think that's a good idea.
@ruigranito @johnhoga Wow, thank you both for taking the time to reply and giving me such comforting information, I really appreciate that. Your understanding of my fear is really an encouragement, thanks again!
Joann Wang Our airport isn't the best to start seeing these footages haha. Great to know you did appreciate our help. :) Also I should point out that planes, airports and pilot training are better everyday. Give it a try sometime ;) John Hogan Junior Pilot? Way to go! Amazing video. Thanks for going through all the effort.
Always perfect videos in this great airport. Many thanks
Madeira. Only for ballsy pilots. Damn!! 😡
hehe

Haha, nice joke. No you were not.
5:14 When your pants get soiled.
5:10 THAT was quite amazing though I would hate to be inside that plane.
It was cool, but i believe the procedure would be to go around because it was unstable on final approach, but im no pilot
That is absolutely crazy!! Seemed to be a big pocket of turbulence just over the start of the runway. Certainly threw most of the pilots off especially the TUIFly and Monarch pilots! Unbelievable catches, honestly one of the best plane spotting videos I've ever seen!!! :D
me to :) i agree with all that you saide
+Conor010 Aviation Channel ✈✈ I'm an experienced traveler and I think the flight at 5:15 would have made me puke.
Conor010 Aviation Channel ✈✈ I only fly with TAP to Madeira!
At 00:05:00, this Tuifly pilot flying has got BALLS !!!!
Crazy airport due to those crazy winds ! Great respect for these pilots !
Lets be happy with those guys
I was going to comment the same one! haha That was probably an abort for 99% of other pilots.
That Finnair landing though
go arounds cost fuel as you need takeoff goaround power as well as losing time and strenous too as it needs a lot of concentration and is frustrating for all but necessary depending on technique amd sideforce

Wow great footage, my heart stop for a second at 5:12 for Tuifly
Mine too. That was bad!

i think its time for them to build a giant wall to block the wind

05:13 nicely done that man :-)
Finnair made it nice and smooth on the first try :D And so did SAS and TAP
+finnishguy845 - and Jet time as well ;)
Great compilation! Big like!
Such a beautiful place to live at btw!

Wow the 737 at 513 it had to be windshear pushing them down. Crazy downswing.
Fantastic video Sam, what ever goes on at FNC you're always there with your camera! Reading in the news here
up north, that people landing there last monday, were shitting their pants!
Thanks for a great clip.
How many heart attacks??? As usual amazing video man!
awsome. that was so intense. those easyjet passengers wont fly a second time with the same airline.
Next week Friday we gonna go here...im actually really scared after watching this video. .
Skill DOES matter
Very good video. Like! --> But, safety first.
I could hear a dutch guy....they are fcking everywhere and always swearing or cursing.
i think easyjet pilots like go arounds because in all crosswind spotting videos they make them
I'm not a pilot, but i live in a similar environment to this with cliffs and sea bluffs interacting with strong onshore winds. Amazing footage. Can't believe the TUIFly at 5:12 didn't go around!
Pěkný nechtěl bych být na palubě....
It is clear that for those who watch is always a spectacle but for those coming inside ............... aiaiai
Oh my god, imagine yor were in that Tuifly from 5:00!!!! For one second it was falling down like a rock! :O nice video!!
EJ shouldn't have been a 3rd attempt. More likely to be another EJ aircraft!
If one of the crew asked the tower for a PIREP, I would have told them we just had a Cessna 172 land and reported a smooth ride.
It is called "Crististiano Ronaldo airport for a reason. You have to get the skills to land there!
Absolutely great video!!
Thanks for posting .. Great vid and great pilots .. Those x winds can be a real sun bitch
Scariest moment in my opinion at 5:15 - 5:17. If that occurred nearer to the ground, it would be goodbye.

I landed in funchal I'm glad I didn't see this before
Max Collins me to lol
i imagine the ground handling team happy to not unload the airplane and to see them go around and have a break all the time. haha
Anyone else agree that the Luxair ( 7:36 ) was the only one that kept the plane stable?
Think there wasnt so much with that time:)
+I'm Your Worst Nightmare Look at Finnair and SAS
Nice one 😃

Wow stunning video mate !! Well done !!
Could you also show the actual rollout along with the landings?
Nice video .. You can see exactly which driver a little guts and which not. Looks really really nice to really see this is it! These are another spectacular landings
and almost everyone Hits the Center line perfectly.
37 knots is well over 737s and 320s limit.
Great amazing captures, and fantastic camera work. Big Super Windy Like!!!
OMGGGGGGGGGGG
Such a fucking weather....
Which place this airport is this...
I am sure some weak hearted would have fainted
madeira
awesome footage man :)
Stunning video and great filming under this adverse weather! Filmed from a building? Liked!
Seems like most of the go-arounds were Airbus, and most Boeing's landed.
Maybe a difference between fly-by-wire and real controls.

Easy jet don't wants to put passengers life in hell, so they patiently approached two times and landed safely at right time. Well done mate 🥰🥰
love hearing the engines at full throttle
