Kind of a random observation, but I love how you react to past Ariel with so much compassion and just...normalcy? I feel like so many people (myself included) when they see old videos of themselves are like "ugh cringe why did I say it like that/act that way." And it felt like you were just hanging out with 2012 Ariel! It was delightful!
+++ yes!
Such a beautiful observation and it is true. She's amazing.
so true!!!
I took one look at the title and thought "who doesn't read the books they buy?" While sitting next to a pile of unread books.
As a a Christian that grew up Catholic it’s totally okay for you to display your books about atheism. I actually think it’s very interesting to have conversations with people that don’t have any views on religion since I grew up quite the opposite. Don’t be ashamed for your beliefs (or lack of) because at the end of the day it’s your life and no one should judge you for your choices in it.
@@hils4228 There is a pretty big difference between disagreeing with someone and judging them. You can disagree but you can't judge.
Beautifully Said!
This is such a lovely response :) I just posted I had never had this experience with someone religious - should have scrolled further as it's so lovely to see :) much love and may your God bless you
Amen. I too grew up in a very Catholic environment and I actually believe in it as well, and people often think that they offend me, when saying they don't believe in it, or follow a different religion, when I just find discussions about that incredibly interesting. Since god isn't something that can be proven I actually think it's rather ridiculous to judge people about it.
I'm black booktuber and always felt discouraged that I didn't look like anyone else on the platform so thank you for linking some folx -- I'm excited to see content from people who have similar experiences to me in this way
I love the bread intermission
The real question I have for this video- WAS THE BREAD SAVED?!?!
IT WAS. AND IT WAS DELICIOUS.
@@ArielBissett yum yum
Ruby Red us iconic in Germany and Switzerland (where I am from) and think it‘s great that you liked it too.
@Anna Sandor taking about horrible things: The Movie.
In France it was highly popular too a few years ago. I liked it a lot. :)
It became very popular in Italy too! I don’t know what I would think of these books now, but I loved them when I read them 🥰
I love Ruby red but those books are hard to find in my country, thats why i cant continue and havent read 2nd and 3rd book.
i read the dutch version! fucking loved them when i was youngee
I can't stress how cute I find it that your dad went book shopping for you (and by the results I can see was so thoughtful about it too)
Thank you for using your platform to speak up for the BLM movement and to amplify black voices.
”I am an ath... I am an atheist, it's true.” : this made me laugh out loud!
Why?
@@omarabdelkadereldarir7458 you don't need a reason to just laugh buddy.
@@killallchadspfpusers9158 True... but usually there is a reason lol. I'm curious
“Books change us forever” YAS
“Hello what’s up” “I completely messed up” “okay” if this isn’t a real wholesome conversation I don’t know what is
I love how you didn't edit out the phone call. Lol thankyou
I read the god delusion ten years ago and loved it at the time. Richard Dawkins has said a lot of sexist and islamophobic things and I no longer look to him for advice. Hitchens died before the atheist community doubled down on being sexist and xenophobic. Of course he's definitely said some harmful things. That said, I am anti-religion. But I think there is a fine line between being anti-religion and anti everyone in the religion.
Do you recommend any YA books on atheism? My pre-teen identifies as one (I think I might be too) and would love to explore the subject more.
@@alarcon99 I know I'm not who you asked, but I recommend Heretics Anonymous by Katie Henry. The main character is an atheist going to a Catholic school and the main cast are the aforementioned atheist, a girl who wants to become a Catholic priest, a Jewish boy, a pagan, and a unitarian. I think this book would be a great discussion starter on different religions, lack of religions, and religious tolerance all around.
Charlotte's Reads I’m a Christian but this sounds fascinating.
Charlotte's Reads thank you so much! I’ll look it up today. Hope u have a wonderful day!
@@alarcon99 honestly I've never once come across a YA atheist nonfiction book. That said, I'm not sure many of the adult books are necessarily bad.
It's also worth noting after my intial atheist phase, I transitioned from atheist books to books on skepticism which, imo, are better at exploring the nature of belief and what is worth believing.
And as for anti religion books (not YA) God is Not Great is probably a good resource. I *still* haven't read it, but I did obsessively watch Hitchens in debates after he released it where it pretty much explained and defended every piece of that book.
Wow i have never heard anyone on booktube talk about the ruby red trilogy!! I read that series in dutch ( my native language) and loved it so much! They are great books!
I remember around 2012 when I first started watching booktube, this series was all the rage! I never read it but I did read The Silver Trilogy in the same series. It was also originally published in Dutch and was never very popular in English. Have you read that one?
Katytastic used to talk about it a lot.
same!
@@EmilyADavis-kq8el I've read Silver in German and I looooved it a lot. I still like Henry lol
Same!!! I read the whole trilogy in Dutch when I was young :)
Honestly World War II is scary! That fear totally makes sense. And books like the book thief make it feel so real so I totally get that.
Also Im Catholic and have also read Dawkins and Hitchens seeking knowledge is always good:):)
Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race has sold out on Amazon UK in paperback and hardcover!!!!! It's also top of their book charts!!!
The Book Thief is a great read. The perspective from which it's told, is interesting - told from the perspective of Death, and the way Death narrates is quite charming. I'd highly recommend it.
Lmao I hope you talk about The Book Thief situation with Raileen in the podcast
i just opened my journal and needed a video to watch while i journal, i'm so happy haha
“I am an atheist and I don’t display them in case it offends other people”
I’m really curious about this, but please don’t answer if it’s uncomfortable for you but is it uncommon to be an atheist in Canada, or was it because of your family, or living in another country? Or because it was two more controversial books? I’d heard the USA was very intolerant but I had no idea it was the same in Canada.
I’m Scottish and it’s so weird to hear someone say they’re afraid of people’s reactions. It’s something like 70% of people here are not religious here. Not religious is obviously not = atheist necessarily but most people don’t really care.
Edit: I’m asking because I’m an atheist who is doing a joint degree in religious Studies and English Literature. Learning about other people’s experiences of religion is fascinating!
THE INTERNET IS A CRAZY PLACE. People yell at me for all sorts of things, I try to minimize it sometimes haha. My family and friend would never judge me for my books or beliefs
In the US I believe the latest statistic is 15% of the population is atheist or agnostic. I am an atheist and it can definitely be an awkward non starter depending on who you are talking to.
I’d say in the Uk it’s the other way around Christians are judged more than athiests.
Hey fellow English lit/religious studies student! I’m double majoring in these as well!
Hilary I think Ariel just meant the number of atheists in Canada is growing not that the country is becoming better because there are more atheists.
Makes me nostalgic when i started watching your videos when I was in high school 8 years ago. Love from the Philippines ❤️
Thank you for acknowledging the movement Ariel! Love your videos and personality, hope you're doing well :)
it's the least i could do!
Love your laughter!
Thank you for the happy distraction!
Ariel! thank you for the atheist representation! literally none of the Booktubers that I watch talk about religion. like ever. so I'm really thankful to find someone like me onBooktube.
thowaiba ben slema tashapolis has a video about her favorite Bible verses! :) JesseTheReader is also a Christian but he doesn't mention it much..
@@ritamurr868 i meant atheist youtubers
thowaiba ben slema I know that a clockwork reader mentioned it in a video. I don’t know which video it was but I’ll see if I can find it. I’ll let you know 😀
@@haileyandfriends635 awwww thank you sm i appreciate your help ❤️
What you said about the movement is really important, so thank you. I think that it's amazing that you're bringing attention to this issue. :) This video was so entertaining!! Loved it!
Ariel... I haven't watched you for a while and I'm glad to see a video from you. Thank you for this message - it was touching, vulnerable, and necessary.
Omg if I did this I would have read NONE OF THE BOOKS BECAUSE IM TRASH
As corny as this may sound your intro about BLM made me tear up thank you for using your platform to encourage others to educate themselves and doing the same yourself!
I also have similar non-religious views as you and I also fear offending people so I kind of just don’t talk about religion either lol out of fear of judgement
Victoria it makes a statement!! I’ve been trying to find black booktubers to follow and can’t really find that many!! So thank you for your comment .. I’d be honored to come and sub to you!
I loved this video and this theme of reacting to past videos 😊 thank you for your shout out for BLM and black booktubers! I’m also proud of you for being open about your personal beliefs. 🖤
This just makes me remember all the books I have on my shelves that I absolutely want to read but also it's been like 10 years and I haven't yet xD Should get on that
Francina's videos are such an experience, it's books (and beyond) gospel!
Yes!! I've been looking for time travel books for YEARS. Downloading Ruby Red now 😊
its so absurd to me that i remember your earlier videos, ive been following for such a long time! plus i just wanted to let you know that i dont know if its just me but the colors in this video are soooo pretty!!!
Yes and yes!
hahaha i love that. they were so long ago!
great video ariel! also i agree with one of the comments here about how you were reacting to your old self. it was very refreshing to see someone not cringing at their past self.
I have also read The Time Machine 3 or 4 times and it's one of my favourite classics. I love it's discussions of class in Victorian society through the future world that the protagonist visits and I pick up different things every time I read it.
I really enjoy this video idea style. I really enjoy Kayla's videos too :)
This book haul is the first video that I watched on your channel and made me watch your content until today so thank you for making it !
two copies of the ballad of songbirds and snakes? xD
I noticed that too :D
Was wondering the same thing.
That's commitment! xD
This is such a fun video! I like how light and fun all yout videos are. I also how original they are. Even if you borrow ideas you change them slightly. (Which is cool.)
I just found your channel! Thank you for using your channel to educate. You're such a beautiful spirit ❤️
Watching this and suddenly realizing I've been watching your channel for 8 years!! You're the only booktuber I've kept up with since my YA days and I've loved watching you grow. We're around the same age so it feels like I've grown up along side you if that isn't too weird? haha I'm so happy you're still making videos and doing all the things you dreamed about when you first started this channel!
This is completely unrelated to your fantastic video but I love the fact that you, a known small book lover, has Ducks Newburyport on your shelf
You were doing so well... and then you got to my FAVOURITE book book and you hadn’t read it 😂 the book thief is so beautiful and moving!
That's funny, my dad also randomly bought Ruby red for me hahaha and I LOVED IT, it was actually the first trilogy I read
I go watch old tbrs and hauls and I never end up a winner 😆😆😆 so good job!
woah i’m binging ur videos for the thousandth time rn and this notification made me smile so big :)))
thanks for having notifications on!!
I love you apologizing for donating the book she sent you haha also love this idea for a video, because there is probably a bunch of books i hauled in the past that i haven't read haha also thanks for boosting Black creators and what's going on currently.
Loved the concept of the video! :) It was really fun to watch.
I am so so happy.... just to find one more book... and besides that, to find a real book lover word nerd in the world. Who has real books on the shelves. In my country many people have konmaried their word treasure and bookcases as no longer fashionable. Yes, truly heartbleeding. But your intense book enthusiasm and reading fervour is just so inspiring. It is good to know that there are still other soul mates on the road less and less travelled...
Your glasses look soo good on you!! Loved this video 😄
This video was a joy to watch! Keep up the great content
Thanks SO MUCH for acknowledging, #blacklivesmatter

Just found you! You’re the first booktuber I actually like. So thank you!
Omgosh I know I have 100’s of books that’s been on my bookshelf for years! Thank you for saying that.. I’m half black and half white and had no idea there was other black or of color booktubers! You are so sweet! I’m subbing to you bcz I like your personality 🥰
I remember this bookhaul. Time goes by so fast
(thank you for the channel links in the description as well !!)
Oh The Book Thief is SO good and I really think you would love it.
The Book Theif! As a teen and now an adult, this book has held up as one of my favorites. It's powerful and beautifully written. It's about WWII, but it is very lyrical and not overly graphic. I absolutely loved the audiobook, if you want to try to tackle it!
truly everything about this from baby ariel to the BLM support to the bread interlude was magnificent ✨
I wish I could say the same thing, I'm pretty sure I haven't read a lot of books I bought years ago 😂
I'm from Honduras and I'm so surprised that you lived here before! I love your videos so much and I have so much fun while watching them. Lots of love from San Pedro Sula in Honduras!
I just saw this video but dude you really need to repurchase The book thief and READ IT !!! love the video ❤️
Ariel!! I missed you! Hope you're doing well. Loved the video 💜
Could you do a book recommendation video with exclusively black authors. I always love your recommendations and it's been overwhelming looking at resources and where to start educating myself. Love you ariel!
I am a Black 65 year old female. Thank you for being honest and for you support for the Black community. It's people like you that will change the world and be part of the solution instead of being part of the problem.
The only 2 ive read are The Book Theif and Warm Bodies! 😂😂 both great!!
I fully recommend the book thief it’s beautiful!
This dress is so sweet 🦋
Can we please have more videos like this!! I really enjoyed it lol😂❤️
I love ruby red!!! And the sequels too!
Warm Bodies was an okay book but a really really cute movie 😊 plus the soundtrack is bomb
I envy your athiestic certainty. I'm mostly a muddled pile of mush.
Ain't nothing wrong with that ☺️
I don't have a video to look back on, but when I time travel through my goodreads tbr there are a ton of books I don't even remember adding! Oopsie doopsie!
she's always so beautiful omhghghg
this is so fun! 💕
I read Animal Farm for the first time last month and I loved it... ❤️
It's so interesting to hear an aetheist thinking they'd offend someone if they showed off certain book. I always feel like it's the other way around: religious people not wanting to show they're religious incase they offend someone.... I guess we should all just be open and people who are offended are the problem...
Really? I've never found that. Religious people in my experience are very forthcoming and pushy about their beliefs. Took me 16 years to even know that being atheist was an option, even though my father is an atheist. Plus historically, religion has held power of majority and oppression to silence atheist voices. I'm from Canada if that makes any difference. I definitely agree though that these problems would lessen if everyone were more open about their beliefs. That is also how people will grow, explore, and question what they believe!
In my experience, especially Christians are veeeery open about the religion, almost to the point of not shutting up about it. But I guess in every country that must be different
@@EmilyADavis-kq8el I actually really don't think it's fair to lump together all "religious people" or to generalize people who identify with religion, or religion in history itself? Even if you say it's in your experience. Every religion is different, and every person who identifies with any religion is different. Many atheists are very open about the fact that they do not believe in God, in fact from what I've seen, just as open as people who identify with a religion are. Also, many people who are what is referred to as "religious" (which is a generalized blanket term that many people I know don't appreciate in and of itself) have been marginalized for their beliefs as well. I think it goes both ways. To be clear, I am not offended, nor am I attacking you or starting a fight. I'm just saying.
@@fabulouskamaria Definitely different religious denominations have been marginalized at different times, but the point is that they have been marginalized by other denominations and sects, not by atheists.
@@fabulouskamaria I know all people are different and all religions are somewhat different, it's just more constructive to stick to some basic characteristics.
WAIT Ariel is an atheist, I STAN Her EVEN More now!
seeing a fellow bi athiest book person makes me v happy ! :) p.s. i have an irrational phobia of ancient Egyptian artefacts (especially sarcophagi !) so i can relate to being terrified in museums !

@@chorn7148 yep :)
@@user-ge2es2bp2x I had no idea! Would you be able to link where she said it? :)
I remember getting Ruby Red by complete accident. My mum bought me Chibi Vampire but the company sent out the wrong book, they refunded her and said we can keep the book. I'm so glad they made that mistake because I loved it when I read it!
"please don't hate me" honestly same😂 loved this video!!
As an atheist myself it's nice to hear someone else be openly atheist. I don't personally understand why people should take offense to you being an atheist, you're not telling anyone else they are wrong with what they believe just that you don't believe it.
I love the way you look back to yourself.
Love your nail color combo.
The rubyred sequels are amazing, These books got me into Reading,
Love from germany
This was so fun to watch!
Thank you for not staying silent, for using your influence as a content creator to amplify black voices and for supporting the black lives matter movement.
Ariel, you should totally do a project (book? video? zine?) on your personal experience and personal perspective as an atheist! 💖
WWII as a phobia is an interesting one! My irrational fear is of anything that lives in water, which is surprisingly prevalent in the world I realised once I had developed this as a teen!! I have no clue where it came from haha. I've read a book about Octopuses which was really interesting but I tend to hide away from them so kudos for reading more about WWII in the past!
you should make a video on your favorite Latinx author's, I'm also half Latina and I love the literature! I would love to know your perspective! Roberto Bolaño's Savage Detectives and Julio Cortázar's shorts stories are my favorite :)
I just ordered the God Delusion on Thrift Books!
Love this 💜💜💜
Ruby Red ...... WHAT A THROW BACK!
Ariel you are so fun!
Omg sameee, I can't read WWII books
Core believes can defiantly change through the years.
If shouldn’t offend people, people are allowed to feel differently about things and you should be able to read anything you want without being shamed.
Somehow, it really bothers me that there are people, who are self-conscious about being atheists. It's nothing to be ashamed of.
I absolutely agree that just because something is a gift doesn't mean that you have to keep it and can't donate it!
Great vibes video:)
Yaasss! 🙌🏼
