For anyone who really struggles unhauling: something that has changed my life is writing a list in my journal of the books I’m getting rid of. This really eliminates the fear element for me. I think it’s because it means that I won’t forget certain books, but I also don’t have to have them physically present. Books can be found so cheaply these days, or in libraries; just because I have a book I know I want to read at some point in the future doesn’t mean I have to hold onto it indefinitely.
on more than one occasion ive gotten rid of a book and then ended up buying it again bc I missed it, so now I have a weird fear of unhauling, plus I dont have many reading friends so idk where to put the books
My 12 year old Christmas cactus reacted really badly to me moving across the country. It's half the size it was and it hasn't flowered since 2019 😥 I just need to keep loving it I suppose lol
I used to be a big book purger when I moved around a lot. Moving every year - or more - meant that it was practical and financially smart to cull. Now that I’m in a more stable place, I kind of regret some of the books I gave away. (At the same time, a lot I don’t remember, proving I probably don’t miss the vast majority! So I remain supportive of culling efforts!) Ultimately what I find super useful is using the library for most of the books I read during the year. Then, at the end of the year, I look back and the ones I simply adore are the ones I purchase for my shelf. A little backward, but it means I’m so happy with what I own! And I save so much money! Ps. Good luck with the move!
I've started doing this too!! I just truly truly love buying books BUT they're so expensive and sometimes they're not worth the price so I find using the library more practical, then buying the ones I want to underline things in (second hand usually dont want books here cause they have enough and theres no recycling for books so if I want to get rid of that one it doesnt matter) and/or the ones i want to reread multiple times. Also it's something nice with only having books you love on your shelf? Almost less stressful, lots of memories etc.
Same for me ill grab the ebook or borrow and if i abaolutely like 4 or 5 star love it ill buy it. But one caveat is i wait til a series is done and buy them as a whole or sometimes the series likw first 3 books will be super solid and great but then the last 2 will implode and just be so disappointing that i cant enjoy the first 3 or whatever books again because i know how shitty it ends. For my perfect in every way aka mary poppins books ill get the like super fancy gorgeous limited edition type books and use them more like a pretty display collector type thing and have the regular book for rereading purposes. For example i love emma (not every version - nor because its my name but i really resonate with her lol) so i collect the editions of Emma that i love and treasure hunt for older ones and avoid the modern or movie related etc ones which i just bleh hate. And that for me falls into the pretty makes my heart full collection category and i simply read it on ebook if i want to reread.
I was about to donate a bunch of books and then you reminded me to go through them and I found so many pictures and bookmarks I love so much so THANK YOU.
It's not a waste of money!!! Any money you have spent on books thay you didnt love/ didnt read is still money that has gone to supporting bookshops and boosting the book industry!!! ❤
I love watching people clean their shelves to main the things they love. I've done it and I really like it. I'm not overwhelmed with books I didn't like (bringing on things I remembered about the books that let me down) and not having a massive pile of unread books. Since I know either way I might momentarily forget I have them or I get so overwhelmed that I don't end up reading anything. With less books I read what's available to me and let myself really sit on if I want a book so by the time I go and buy the book, intentionally seeking out that one book, I'm ready to read it then. And being okay with the money spent because it like food matters of something I took in, not the physical object. While I still have preferences like really nice floppy paperbacks for instance. I've noticed with the pretty collectors editions, I don't read as well because I don't want to damage or write in those. Yet in the other ones, I do not mind all sorts of annotating and reader damage and that will be the edition i turn to the most to read and reread. I'm still watching your video. And please don't overthink the length of the videos. You have a thoughtful, calm yet provoking style that I do enjoy to listen to and it brings out these comments of mine, even if it may not completely match what you're talking about, some of the comments you make in the videos like some you made earlier on here, I resonate and agree with. There's always an emotional and mental change for me after I go through my bookshelves for whatever goal I planned. May your future shelves continue to bring you happiness and may the move and everything surrounding this new journey be safe and have a good ending. I know how crazy things can be.
I LOVE PURGING THINGS. It's so freeing and comforting to know that i have a curated collection of things that i love and get the most use out of. I'll go as far as to say it feels luxurious
I don’t know why there is such a taboo around unhauling books. You just made someone somewhere happier. That’s it!! What you did is actually beautiful to me. Love you 💕
I mean I’m accepting donations.. 🤔 haha but anyway you should try to get rid of it especially if it’s been awhile it’ll be more loved by someone else :)
Yas!! I did this last year. So freeing. Got rid of the Burden of “have to read this someday” and only kept “want to read this someday” or books I love. It was amazing. Haven’t regretted any of them.
Thank you for being a booktuber that is not all about hoarding. It's not about the number of books you have on your shelf but about the books you truly enjoy. I don't believe in keeping books that I don't plan on rereading or that I didn't enjoy as much. I like to pass on the books once I'm done. Share the book love!
Not totally relevant, but Purging your books throughout the year def helps. I usually make the call soon after reading a book on whether I would read it again. If not, then I put it aside until I have enough to trade in at the thrift bookstore.
2 years ago, I thought I was going to loose everything, my home, my possessions and my pets. So I went on a crazy purge to keep only the things I loved. I had 6 book cases crammed into my room filled to max capacity, books under my bed, stacked next to my bed and in boxes in the garage... I donated over 5,500 books to my local schools, libraries and second hand book stores. I have one book case now filled with just my favorites. It feel so much better to own the ones that matter and borrow the rest. And if I love one I borrowed, I buy the digital copy. Everyone's book collection is purely them. I think this was great to see, especially because i have been watching your channel since booktube was basically not a thing.
should've gotten rid of Cursed Child lol. I felt so much better after I gave it to someone who wanted to read it and I asked them to no bother giving it back to me.
I thought the same thing! I was so shocked when she didn't put that in the donate pile. Maybe that was one that didn't survive the second or third pass.
I hope the eviction wasn't too traumatic for you. I was evicted during college and it was...a lot. I mean I am used to financial trauma but not like that. I'm glad it seems like you see it more as moving. But moving is still a lot emotionally and physically so don't push yourself too much.
GIrl, I feel you! I had a book collection of approx 1000, acquired over 8 years. We made a big move at one point and needed to trim down aLOT. I ended up down to around 100. It was rough but it made me realize which ones really mattered...it was a great thing in the end.
I did a big cull in September which was like 100 books when I moved back home and I've been looking at what I kept and think more is probably going to be donated so totally with you on that it takes several passes. Thanks for sharing this with us!
I watched this when it came out and enjoyed it then and it helped me look at my shelves before a big move. Now 2 years later I am about to move again and came back to the video. I really appreciate the open and thoughtful way in which you approached what for many of us booklovers is a difficult thing (even more so due to the haul/ unhaul culture here on UA-cam and the surrounding debates). So cheers from Europe for this as I am about to embark om another round of decluttering!
16:16 This moment is gold!! I have a couple books from school that I will never let go of because of the agony they have caused me. You are so brave, Ariel!
It's a beautiful experience rewatching your older videos and knowing that this led you to buy your home! It's a phenomenal achievement and a real joy seeing you making it your own!
As someone who's currently struggling with having too many books on my shelf that I'm just not interested in reading anymore but also not having the heart to get rid of them, this has really helped me. Thank you 💕
I used to have sooo many books until I started to move often and I discovered what a pain it was to haul them all when I never got around to reading most of them. I realized they were just clutter. As much as I love books, I don't need to keep them just to keep them. I've gone from a huge book shelf full to a small shelf bin of about 9 or 10. Even that I could narrow down a bit, but I'm fine for now. Donate books to your local library, put them in little free libraries for others to enjoy, or take them to consignment or paperback trade. Lots of options for books so people can still get joy from them.
When I moved to Hawai'i I donated 80% of my books. And shipped the rest via USPS. My book preferences changed over the years so I'm glad I let go of most of them! (Did repurchase some lol) ❤ good luck
I moved a lot moving up so totally relate to the stress of packing, also, wanted to say I love that you put jazz in the background to make it a little more peaceful 😅 also, makes me want to listen to jazz
It's so sad that landlords can do that to people. it was done to my poor sister too. It's not easy when somebody can say ,"sorry, you have to get out of this house , I want to get rid of it". So sorry you're going through this sweetheart. I hope everything works out well for you and your family. Prayers for a safe journey and relocating.
My reading room was destroyed by a natural disaster, along with most of my home. When we were able to move back in, and I had all the empty space to fill, I decided to only bring in things, including books, that I love. And I’ve also made a decision to read, or have already read, the books on my shelves. I redid a formal dining room into my home library that’s much bigger than my previous reading room, but there are so few books on the shelves because I’m not bringing just anything in.
Hello, this is my first time on this channel. I wanted to say Thank you for sharing your feelings. I think growing up as someone who liked to read books and also moved so many times I feel almost obligated to keep them all as something safe (did I mention I also teach and recently opened up a bookshop?) and this was so refreshing. I think I am definitely going to purge my personal collection so I can move on with those I have at work. I don't read as much the books I would love to (like classics) more of a self-development style now, but I love the fact I get to share the love and help my students to build their confidence when reading. Also - we must be related (definitely not), I love Orwell too, Frida, Nabokov, Kafka, classics- I feel the same way - don't want to get rid of them, but hard to put a limit on it. Anyway I hope the move went well. I am definitely going to have a little look around your channel. Thank you for your honesty, no wonder why you have 230 k subscribers. Katerina
I’m moving on Nov 1st and it will be my 5th move in 7 years lol let me tell you my book collection is getting reduced every single time and the first few times it was a struggle, now it makes me feel pretty good to purge. Most of them were bought years ago anyway, now I’m much more intentional when spending money. Although stress is unavoidable in these situations(moving), I wish you as simple a process as possible :)
I did a major purge when I moved from one apartment to another. I only kept books that was special to me, I kept books in my entertainment center and by my reading chair and ottoman. I utilized my local library and stopped buying books. Then I started reading ebooks and never looked back. Now I have a Kindle Paperwhite with 200+ books and Kindle Unlimited. My personal collection can go every with me now and fits in my purse!
I totally get that feeling. I had to purge my books last time I moved. I gave away 18 boxes of books to the local library. It was painful at the time. It gets easier. :-)
I did this before I moved and it was so worth it! I don't miss any of the unread or ok books. Just happy to see all my favorites on a shelf together :)
Every few months I come back to UA-cam to watch book unhauls, and I ALWAYS come back to this one as my very favorite. Thanks for being there a few times a year to remind me to declutter! : )
I moved about 4 years ago and got rid of so many books bc I realized that I will never reread a book. I can hardly stand rewatching a movie, let alone rereading a book. I do agree with you on the whole going back for rounds 2 and 3. Once you start getting rid of some, it easier to get rid of others. I then got rid of a bunch of books once I moved in lol.
I’m just passing by to say that this had become my comfort video, and I didn’t understand the feeling behind that until this. this right here. thank you for your vibe and everything about this really. 💕
Yay! I'm glad you found your comfort video! It's that so funny how some videos just make you feel good and there's really no reason for it? My comfort video is from Overly Sarcastic Productions on Hp Lovecraft's horror novels even though I despise horror. It makes no sense but then comfort videos/shows rarely do 😂
@@chelsey8737 tysm, I appreciate that! honestly bestie I’m not that fond of horror movies myself but these are the sort of things that we can’t really explain, so I totally get you. so glad you could find a comfort video as well! 💕
II have my”must have” books in a rather small glass doored bookcase. They’re my signed, personalized books, leather leather bound, valuable....and whe evacuation from wildlife is looming, get packed and loaded in the car. In moving in the par, I did purge books I wish I had kept...just a few....but oh ouch. I read more on my kindle (iPad) these days anyway....and that saves tons of space! Good luck with your purge and move!
Your books, your money, your choice. That's the bottom line. I love watching videos like these because they always get me motivated to go through my own and donate what I no longer want to read. ❤️
Good for you.. lightening your load before the move will make it easier.. and your are sharing some of your favorites with others.. MOVING STINKS... Good luck
No way, I met Donal Ryan when he came to my school last year for a talk on his book 'The Spinning Heart' because my class is studying it for our leaving cert! I've never seen anyone outside of Ireland care for his books haha thats so awesome!
I’m sort of in the middle of a big move myself, which required me to put my books in storage for half a year. And I did exactly what you did and got rid off a lot of them. I don’t have an exact number bit it was over 400 and to be quite honest, it was fun. I went through them all multiple times and each time it was easier. Wish you good luck and all for your move and hopefully it will be the last one for a long time to come.
I want to do a big unhaul, but I feel like I can't get rid of a book without reading it first. I might just have to take month to read books I want to get rid of
I thought the same before I started my massive unhaul a couple month ago. So I gave myself a certain page count and just started reading the books. And if by that page count I still had no interest I’d unhaul the book. Worked like magic XD I went through so many books in a short time and could with absolute certainty say that I had absolutely no interest in reading them and therefore no problem unhauling them.
I'm like this, too. I recently realized I had a lot of unread books or things that I hadn't touched in years, so I moved all of them to their own shelf. I don't like having them all out of their genres, but having them all in one place makes it easier for me to actually read them. And then I can get rid of the ones I no longer love.
DEFINITELY listen to Daisy Jones! I had no interest in it and then it was a skip-the-line option at my library so I read it a few weeks ago and I was obsessed with it!
When you talked about how much booktube has swayed your excitement you have for new releases/books everyone hypes up, I felt that. I used to purchase soooo many books that I would then just put on my shelf and never feel like reading. I've wasted hundreds of euros on books that I will never read just because I've let booktube influence my decisions so much. About a year ago, I've stopped watching most of booktube and lo and behold, my book buying frenzy has come to a very abrupt halt. And all the books I do buy now, are ones that I'm actually excited about because I've discovered them based on my personal taste and not popularity on UA-cam. And almost all of them I've actually read, and the ones I haven't yet are simply put on hold because I don't have the time right now. That was a big wake up call and what you said just resonated so incredibly well with me.
ariel i definitely understand the moving with a shit ton of books struggle, purging is tough but needed sometimes!!!! but omg it’s my DREAM to have this much book space, my dad and i recently installed a shelf that goes over my door & into the corner then over my closet door, it’s pretty nice and the wall next to it has like 4 shelves but it’s still not enough space lmaooo i need shelves like these all over but i’ve got a tiny room/no wall space 😭😭
I did the same not long ago. Moved and purged my book collection from over 400 down to 62 books. That was about 4 or 5 purges. Now I’m down to the bare bones and have a TBR that I truly love!
@arialbissett You lived in Toronto. You lived in Honduras. You lived in the UK. I’m breathless with anticipation to find out what you call a “really big move”.
I feel you girl. I grew up as a military brat. We moved EVERY 3 years from air base to air base, so I had to purge my ENTIRE life (clothes, toys, books, furniture, etc) and it was heart rendering every time. Books were the hardest to do because throughout all my moves - losing friends, having to make new ones, dealing with a new school etc - books were my coping mechanism. They were always there for me to lose myself in when life got crappy. Unfortunately they are also the heaviest of items - so they had to be culled. Thank goodness my mom is a big reader too, so I was given a bit of a sympathetic shoulder & given a max of 10 boxes for books every move. Once I moved out & had my own place...I started to collect in earnest. Over half of my apartment is filled with bookcases of books. Lord help me if I have to move in the near future. Good luck! 💜
Ohhhhh I'm getting SOOO much second hand anxiety over this! I moved about a billion times in my twenties, carting my massive book and vinyl record collection with me everywhere I went, at times storing it in storage facilities. There was one time I purged entirely TOO much of my book collection... rare books, first edition books, books I really loved but felt pressured to get rid of or was influenced by the minimalism movement (which I absolutely hate now and will never subscribe to again). There's books I can't even remember I had or read because this was wayyy before I ever knew about goodreads. When I finally bought a home with my husband 4 years ago I started repurchasing the books that I could remember, usually being picky about editions and paying more for the ones I wanted. It's a nightmare. I keep every book I get now, whether I hate it or not. Thankfully I'm very set on staying in this house for a long time. Whenever we upgrade I'll lug them all, I don't care. I am so not dealing with that headache/heartache again. But man, do I know what you're going through. It is ROUGH.
My mum says the next time I visit her (soon!), I have to start purging my books AND my dad's old ones. That's going to be really hard but watching this makes contemplating the prospect feel a little better. Might revisit this video in a couple months for motivation! 🙌
I actually cleaned out a tonne of books that I've had since I was a kid and it was sooooo cleansing, and now I just look at my bookshelf with so much joy lol it's my favourite part of my room
I did the same when I moved out the country 4 years ago. It stills hurt when I think about of all the books I had to let go. That is why I mostly buy ebooks, next time I move, my ebooks come with me.🙂
this feels like such a beautiful love letter to your collection of books! i don't have a planned move out date, but i'm moving soon and this just made me feel so much better on cutting down my collection!! thank you so so much ariel
We downsized and moved into a small house so I had to purge a lot. It took several passes for me as well to get my books paired down and even now sometimes I’ll go over and pull a few off my shelf that I don’t feel like I want to keep anymore. It’s really nice to have a smaller curated collection that really represents what you love.
”dont tell me i wasted my money because every single one of these supported an author” wow that really changed my perspective on unhauling! Thank you!
Yes, wow!! I need this perspective.
Well said.

This is such a good way to look at it.

Ultimately what I find super useful is using the library for most of the books I read during the year. Then, at the end of the year, I look back and the ones I simply adore are the ones I purchase for my shelf. A little backward, but it means I’m so happy with what I own! And I save so much money!
Ps. Good luck with the move!
I do this as well!
I do this too!
Me too!
This is the best comment I’ve ever received IM SO GLAD YOU CHECKED
You so beautifully put into words so many things I was thinking.
Love you 💕
I'm not moving anywhere, but suddenly I just feel like wanting to get rid of half of my books lol.
Same, not that I have a lot of books but it looks so satisfying to get rid of books that don't make you happy any more
Send them over
I mean I’m accepting donations.. 🤔 haha but anyway you should try to get rid of it especially if it’s been awhile it’ll be more loved by someone else :)
sometimes u just gotta clean our ur bookshelves
"I'm going to keep delirium" ~puts it on the unhaul stack.~
Mood
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that haha
Was literally going to comment this exact thing. 😂
Ok, not to be controversial or anything but that book needs to go. Wtf is wrong with the ending
I just cannot
I just like to pretend that book doesnt exist. It never happened.
Maybe she doesn’t want others to experience the pain of reading such a horrendous book
I'm sorry to hear about your eviction!! Your outfit and mug is so lovely !!!
This is so relatable - I purged a bunch of books recently because I had the time during lockdown, and it felt liberating but also painful!
same did it twice still did not purged my series yet i have two i am not sure of but did 40 last week so i am happy for now
I did a big cull in September which was like 100 books when I moved back home and I've been looking at what I kept and think more is probably going to be donated so totally with you on that it takes several passes.
I read 'Not That Bad' and 'Bad Feminist' as audiobooks, and highly recommend the format. It makes the essays much more personal.
how do you read an audiobook? don't you listen to audiobooks? do did you read the book while listening to the audiobook?
Is it from audible or your library provides audiobook too? Thank you
@@dioramomo8904 Through libby! It's a free app that is through Overdrive, connected to your library. It's a wonderful app, highly recommend it

Also Ariel: ” wears blue and yellow “
Just know that I'll be watching the entire video because I voted for a longer video!
Ariel: "I didn't love 'let it snow'"
Me: "...So I'm gonna 'let it go'"
My reading room was destroyed by a natural disaster, along with most of my home.
Katerina
For someone who doesn’t like unhauling , you did it beautifully xx
Ah, it's the classic bookshelf trick: you remove a mountain of books and yet, somehow, they still look full.
I like that statement, each purchase supported the author. I'll have to remember that whenever I feel guilty for not keeping a book I paid for!
I love unhauling videos and stuff, makes me really inspired to Marie Kondo my books so I can look at my shelves and only see books I'm excited about!!
This channel is amazing.
I did this before I moved and it was so worth it! I don't miss any of the unread or ok books. Just happy to see all my favorites on a shelf together :)
me: getting mad at people for getting rid of your favorite books is dumb
me as you get rid of The Dream Thieves: nooooo
Hahah me when she got rid of the maze runner and said she’d never read the series but everyone had their opinions
When she said she wanted to keep Delirium but put it in the cull pile by accident I became unreasonably anxious 😅
I’m so obsessed with your mug
This is such a colourful video. I loved it. From your nails, to the book arrangements, your mug and outfit. Loved this.
Worked like magic XD
I went through so many books in a short time and could with absolute certainty say that I had absolutely no interest in reading them and therefore no problem unhauling them.
@@finjasola4934 This is such a great method!! I'll def do this when the time comes for me to do an unhaul!
I'm like this, too. I recently realized I had a lot of unread books or things that I hadn't touched in years, so I moved all of them to their own shelf. I don't like having them all out of their genres, but having them all in one place makes it easier for me to actually read them. And then I can get rid of the ones I no longer love.
OMG Princess of the Midnight Ball was one of my favorite early adolescence reads!!
Who else thinks that coffee cup is the cutest thing you have ever seen!!!!!😍😍😍
Also iam sorry you have to move hope you get there safe praying🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
i'm manifesting a calm and stress-free move for you and that your new home is the setting for so much joy and love !! xxx

Good luck! 💜
My landlord just did the exact same thing to us. I wouldn't wish this kind of stress on my worst enemy. I feel for you
Rooting for you 💕💕💕
I would've watched this if it was three hours long, just so you know.
When she posted on Instagram about trimming it down I cried inside.
Me too!!
Wait how long was it originally lol?
don't you worry, im definitely not crying from the abundance of books you have and wish to be a friend of yours to have 211 books to choose from
Ohhhhh I'm getting SOOO much second hand anxiety over this!
Honestly, you could say seeing people getting rid of stuff they don't need or like anymore, is kinda my kink.
i’m just so happy you didn’t get rid of divergent... i have such an emotional attachment to the series
Me: she’s moving again??
*clicks on video*
Ariel: Hello, I’m moving again.

Me too Ariel, this makes me feel less alone. Stay safe! ♡
I actually cleaned out a tonne of books that I've had since I was a kid and it was sooooo cleansing, and now I just look at my bookshelf with so much joy lol it's my favourite part of my room
the book stacking sound is weirdly satisfying. ASMR unhaul?
I like your criteria for which books to keep. Those are awesome shelves. I hope your new place has something similar.
I feel saddened, on behalf of your books, that they will no longer sit on those gorgeous shelves. Best of luck on the move!!
I did the same when I moved out the country 4 years ago. It stills hurt when I think about of all the books I had to let go. That is why I mostly buy ebooks, next time I move, my ebooks come with me.🙂
WAIT you accidentally put delirium in the discard pile
Don’t worry!! I caught it haha ♥️
this feels like such a beautiful love letter to your collection of books! i don't have a planned move out date, but i'm moving soon and this just made me feel so much better on cutting down my collection!! thank you so so much ariel
i cull my books at least once a year. I find it so freeing :)
PRincess of the Midnight Ball is one of my favorites of all time!!!!!!!! OMG
Just the title gives me anxiety. My books are my life. I commend you on having the strength to do this.
It was told that Ali bin Abi Talib said : beware of autumn’s wind and air, it does to your bodies what it does to tree leafs. 🌙
You’ve got this! 🥰I haven’t long moved and it was stressful at first but now I’m loving my new place. & better space for books 😃
