  • As per many (many!) requests from your comments, I spent two months watching all the seasons of Gilmore Girls - plus the 2016 revival - to analyse and dissect the characters' diet, what it all may mean and if it reflects what the actresses really ate in real life.

The thing is though, they always had PILES of food but only ever took one bite of pizza or 2 licks of ice cream and then discarded it. Most of the time when they ate out, they'd order and as soon as their food arrived they'd have to leave without even touching it. The fast food gorging was a massive illusion, but if you watch how much fast food they actually eat, it was minimal.

I think the use of junk food in the show also helps show how Lorelei and Rory are more sisterly than mother and daughter. Lorelei had Rory when she was a teen and because of that, she eats like one. Rory eats that way because that's how she was raised. I don't want to sound insensitive but I wouldn't be surprised if Lorelei had an eating disorder, she was raised in a strict environment so her trying to gain control through food makes sense. She constantly drinks coffee as a main source of energy and while people around her say she eats a lot she could be binging. She's most likely in a binge/ restrict cycle a lot of the time, between having to raise a child by herself, maintain a job and stay active in her social life she doesn't have much time to eat by herself. Because of this, she's fully reliant on takeout and restaurant visits and ends up eating a majority of her calories around friends and family.
There's a really strong tie between food and socializing in the show, there are barely any scenes of her eating by herself and when she is it's stuff like the bag of lettuce with dressing. Lorelei's relationship with food is really interesting because of this, it's one of the things that makes her seem not fully "adult". Cooking a proper meal for yourself and your family multiple times a day on a regular basis is one of those things that make people seem more "grown-up", Lorelei's dependency on fast food shows that even though she's in her 30s she's still enough like a teenager to be on the same level as Rory.

This ist such a good comment. I never saw it like that. I grew up watching Gilmore Girls and it is still my favourite show. I waned to add that food can be a tool to represent a social background. Although Lorelai came frome an incredibly wealthy backgorund with maids and cooks, she moved out with the age of 16 probably never learned to cook for herself or her daughter. So fastfood was the only and a convenient way to provide for Rory as a single, working and teenage mom, which later is cultivaded in the series

I think the food acting makes the “quirkiness” of them loving food more realistic… throughout high school and college I’ve met tons and tons of girls who claim to love food and “eat so much” , but when I’d watch them eat they would take a few bites of the junk food. I remember this distinctly in high school- I was a size 10 and was the biggest one out of all of the girls I knew. We had a sleepover where all the girls were SO excited to “eat junk food” all night. Night of the sleepover came and a few of them had ONE Oreo each. I think it’s this complex with young women to make themselves sound like they eat a ton and they’re unhealthy to make you notice how skinny they are and wonder, but it’s not true.

True true. Noticed this in slim friends of mine too. When a skinny person says that they “eat a lot of food but never get fat”, it’s because they don’t actually eat a lot. It’s cause they eat so little of everything, but somehow in their minds, they assume it to be of big proportion.

    • @RobiN-nt7hc

I noticed that when skinny people say they 'eat a lot' they don't intend to purposefully mislead you.
I put on quite a lot of weight at 16 and ballooned from 50 KG to 86 KG at my heaviest.
One of friend would eat a lot but always remain skinny. It wasn't until I slept over at her place for 3 weeks that I realised she only eats a lot about once daily.
She'd have a heavy meal at around 2 PM and that would be it.
But I would have 3 heavy meals and question why I wasn't as small as she was lol.
I'd also complain about how I eat less than most people I know yet weighed almost twice as much as they did. Which I later found to be untrue because when I started paying attention to my diet, I realised that I was eating close to 3K calories daily.

However, it is more expensive to eat out or buy prepared food (think a frozen meal that only requires heating up) than it is to buy ingredients (like pasta or canned sauces/veggies) and then combine/prepare them yourself. For example, you buying eggs, cheese, and butter and making your own omelette in the morning is going to be cheaper than going to a diner and buying eggs at a price that includes the diner’s operating costs (rent, labor, etc) and a profit margin. i would argue that lorelai and rory can only be friends with girls who they think are less beautiful than they are, or have less social power than they do (sookie, an overweight woman, lane, an asian american girl with a strict mother, or paris a girl who's very insecure about her looks and has fewer social skills) because they don't view them as a threat, they are nice to them because they think of themselves as above them, even if they don't overtly say it. Every time a new character enters that rivals them in brains, beauty and social skills or possess some talent or skill that they don't have (luke's girlfriend rachel in season 1, or Lucy and olivia from season 7) they are an immediate threat to the girls social status and they cannot establish a good relationship with them no matter how hard they try, which either leads to jealousy, rivalry, or judgement of appearence or actions because the show requires them to be the most desirable women in any setting. rachel is an immediate threat to lorelai and lukes relationship AND highlights how much luke is in love with lorelai because of how similar they are in looks. Lucy is revealed to be dating Marty who was into rory, but even though rory rejected him, she cannot fathom him getting over her AND THE SHOW DOESN"T EITHER BECAUSE HE'S STILL IN LOVE WITH HER. They can be happy for their friends successes in finding love because they don't see those successes as a detriment to their social status. As much as this show made strides in representation for different kinds of women being loved, it's impossible to ignore how rory and lorelai treat the women around them as only existing for their benefit.

Something that occured to me recently is that Luke is constantly portrayed as a stick-in-the-mud and a killjoy because he eats healthily and tries to get the Gilmores to do the same, but no-one ever considers that it's likely coming from a place of fear. Both of Luke's parents died young, and he clearly has a lot of unresolved trauma because of that, as we see from things like his aversion to hospitals and his 'dark day'. So his obsession with being healthy could very well be his way of trying to take control in a way he couldn't when his parents died, and trying to prevent himself and the two people he cares about most from suffering the same health problems and early death that his parents faced. But as far as I can remember, nothing like that is ever explored on the show. Maybe I'm just thinking too deeply about something that was probably meant to be meaningless (and thereby doing exactly what ASP doesn't want viewers to do), but I just feel like this could have been a good opportunity to further explore and develop Luke's character, and instead it was just left as more fuel for the show's 'healthy people are so annoying' jokes.

Granted, some people have an unbelievable metabolism, but Rory's and Lorelai's eating habits and even some personality traits were considered as quirky by most of the other characters and not as potentially dangerous. The show still holds a very special place in my heart, but willing suspension of disbelief is just impossible as a 30-something adult. You are so right! This was my favorite show in middle school when it was airing but watching now at 28 its just way too unrealistic for me. I made it through season 1 and half of season 2 in my rewatch before it just began to feel like a chore. Don't get me wrong the cozy vibes and nostalgia was there but the show feels like its unrealistic to the point of being a parody. Maybe I have become jaded and my imagination is not as good😂. The food is one major thing- you can clearly tell the actresses (especially Lauren) work out and eat an appropriate calorie amount. Even if you are one of those superfreaks with a turbo metabolism, you literally cannot eat that high-fat, high-carb and high-sodium diet and look like they do, in the lowest body fat percentage category possible. Unless you are an athlete and burning it all off in intense aerobic exercise which clearly they are not depicted as.
But aside from that you only ever see them eating out all their meals from Luke's or restaurants to the point they don't even know how to use their own oven. Yet at the same time Lorelai is a financially struggling single mom. Like maybe if you cut down your monthly food budget you could have afforded Rory's Chilton tuition all by yourself (jk). These are just minor irritations but just the dialogue, while witty, its like NOBODY TALKS LIKE THIS. Nobody is witty and making pop culture quips 24/7 even in emotionally charged scenes 😩.

Especially with how Rory approaches education and job opportunities (i.e. not well and entitled) plus Lorelai’s running out on her wedding to Max. I now have experiences of both over the last 10+ years and can say there are better ways to deal with these than they do on the show. Yeah well fast and slow metabolism
Isn’t really a thing it’s more pop science (correct me if I’m wrong), however when everyone says people have a different motabolism the only factors are height, muscle mass, sex and age (might’ve missed one) so if someone is the same sex the same age and around the same height as you then they don’t have a higher or slower metabolism than you at al.
The only reason someone’s metabolism might be slower is if you are skinny and or have stopped eating for a long time and you’ve enterned starvation mode. And yes I said that right skinny people have a slower motabolism than bigger people, that’s why if a “fat” person and a skinny person go on the same diet ad exercise just as much then obviously the fat person will loose weight significantly faster

    • @danijane2819
      @danijane2819 2 роки тому +23

If someone the same age height and weight as me does (for example) 4+ sports a week and I sit on my sofa all week, then their metabolism will be much higher than mine as their body is burning more ATP in order to provide energy to their muscles and digestive system. They will eat more food and metabolise faster, giving them a faster metabolism.

For them to use spit buckets there would have to be frequent cuts, but the show is known for staying in wide shots for as long as possible. Cutting so frequently would make the film choppy to the directors and have much more of an impact (for them) than seeing the actors actually eat. Just a guess.

In the past I have read many novels and noticed, that the slim heroines either lacked appetite, since they never finished their meals or were appalled by them due to being too sad/upset to eat. In other novels they ate junk like the Gilmore Girls without gaining weight.
I wonder if the authors of such novels and tv shows project their own fantasies on the characters about either lacking appetite or having an overactive metabolism and thus being able to stay slim without effort.

Like, I thought that it seemed like they skipped a lot of meals or ate a bite here and there and then would binge like, twice/week, giving off the impression of eating a ton without actually consistently doing that. She would have a bag of chips and a Diet Pepsi at lunch, that she went on about, but that was her whole meal. Maybe 200 calories. Back in 2000 when Gilmore Girls was on there was no such thing as a pick me girl. In fact, at the time it was cool to be blonde. It was also common to overly stereotype girls to be popular pretty blonde, smart dorky brunette, and promiscuous red head. Most mother figures were wholesale wearing mom jeans types or unreliable drunk single moms. It wasn’t until Dawson’s creek that there was truly a teen drama. The only others were saved by the bell and 90210. Two vastly different vibes with very unrealistic storylines. GG was one of the first shows to become popular that blurred a lot those lines. A lot complaints of being a pick me girl stem from movies and shows in the early aughts trying to break previous girl stereotypes resulting in the not like other girls trope. It’s taboo now but that’s a result of a lot of hard work of trying to show girls they can like sports and be smart and pretty too. The movies She’s the man and Sydney white are prime examples of this idea. Both well loved amongst younger millennials but also a result of over representing women FOR DECADES as shallow self absorbed beauty and boyfriend obsessed girls. I feel like people forget pick me and girl boss are results of trying to get women a seat at the table in media. No one ever complains about male characters in this way which is the point.

Before the sorority girls show up to 'unexpectedly' take her; Lorelia told Rory that the Puffs called her and told her that they were taking Rory for the night. The person who was really in the wrong here for not telling Paris about maybe putting on some makeup or looking presentable is Paris's mom. Paris made a point to talk about how she came from a long line of Puffs. If her family have come from a long line of Puffs and this middle of the night kidnapping thing is a 'tradition'; then wouldn't it be more logical to assume that a family from Paris's family would've told her instead of someone who she hasn't been exactly nice to and didn't even want to be a Puff in the first place?

Growing up as one of those people that people would marvel at because of how much I could eat and still stay skinny here's my 2 cents. Most people are privy to one or 2 of the meals I would eat in a day. I would eat a large lunch and people would comment but not see that I didn't eat breakfast that morning or had a rather small one or notice that that I didn't eat much the day before. They would see me consume a large portion of junk food in one sitting and assume that I would eat like that on a daily basis instead of maybe once a week. In the case of the Gilmore Girls. 1) While Rory and Lorelei don't exercise they are often shown walking from place to place. They only seem to drive or take the bus when its necessary. As long its within walking distance they walk. 2) From my recollection of the show they weren't seen eating breakfast a lot. They were usually seen drinking coffee in the morning. Black coffee has no calories and helps control hunger hormones. It possible that on a regular basis they were only eating 2 meals a day. 3) They were also almost never seen snacking outside of movie nights and other similar activities. 4) If they did in fact get majority of their meals from Luke's, diner food doesn't automatically mean unhealthy food. We've seen that Luke is actually a really good cook. He's arguably chef level since he's received praise from Sookie. OMG the 'cool girl' trope is something I've never been able to explain before but i'm glad you've pointed it out as a 'thing'. Another character I can think of is Penny from Big Bang Theory. She's meant to be boyish and cool and someone who eats pizza and all the halloween candy at once but ITS CONSTANTLY pushed to the audience how beautiful and skinny she is (even Amy and Bernie ALWAYS mention it). Yet when you see them eat on screen they just kinda push around the food or eat the tomatoes on the salad....

With the fat shaming and other things in the 2016 revival I noticed a lot of the humor along those lines seemed very gratuitous and heavy handed as if Amy Sherman Palladino was really trying to bristle against The change in attitudes and culture around certain issues. There’s fat shaming present, there’s a slightly racist running gag about the housekeeper and still some very touchy queer jokes. Her and her husband seem like they come from that Tina Fey school of political correctness. Like it’s very much “trust me I’m an ally but I’m going to say these awful things about certain groups in a punching down sort of way but you’re just gonna have to trust me that it’s not malicious or hurtful”🙄. Still a big fan of all people mentioned but as a fan it’s kind of an aggravating flaw to put up with in their work. Especially being queer, formerly overweight and from an immigrant family.

You're right about ASP & Tina Fey being similar with their "wink & a punch down" humor. I tried to re-watch the first season of 30 Rock recently and so many jokes are utterly offensive to many groups and those with mental health struggles. It's cringe. I can't believe how differently I view GG and 30 Rock as a grown adult. I see how bitter and problematic they are now.

The 2016 revival was much less funny and to me more offensive than like 95% of the original show even when i go back and rewatch. A good 5% of the original show was making fun of queerness and mental illness and joking about suicide and stuff like that but even as a queer person it skirted the edge of not quite feeling completely offensive. But the fatphobia in the revival was so notable as was the one episode with the ballet dancer journalism plot as a fat viewer myself.

  • @cyds.726

Loved this video! Re: the fatphobia in the show and revival: the fatphobia definitely felt amplified in the revival. I think, as a writer, ASP was (mostly) before her time in the original series for casting Sookie's character and others with more body diversity, as well as not making their bodies a plot point. And of course, the first series had less fatphobic jokes. Unfortunately, I feel like the revival showed ASP doubling down on "not giving a shit" and trying to be controversial. She's a great writer, but sometimes she goes way overboard.
Fun fact: Lauren also loves to ride her bike and always bikes to set rather than taking a cart, per her memoir! So although this isn't as intense as her other workouts, it's cool to think that she enjoys low-impact exercise as well.

They give me the impression of both having eating disorders that maybe they don't even acknowledge to one another. I'm 99% sure my MIL is anorexic and she barely eats her food, but she talks about food a lot, buys lots of food and cooks daily. She even puts a lot on her own plate, but she doesn't actually eat much of it. My FIL is also always dieting and they both put pressure on my SIL to be fit and thin. The whole family is seemingly obsessed with food, they spend tons of money on it and over-order intentionally, but let most of it go bad or get thrown away. I stayed with them for two weeks last month and my MIL left each nights' leftovers out on the counter overnight every night I stayed there, she literally throws away half of what she makes. My husband still has trouble eating and often goes underweight. He denies that it has anything to do with his family's diet, but his parents have eaten like that since he and his sister were kids and forced a restricted, "healthy" diet and constant athletics their entire childhoods :/

Based on the Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, ASP seems to have a thing for writing about white, very beautiful skinny women. I think it was slightly refreshing to see that she commented on how Midge worked so hard to maintain her figure since the beginning of her marriage (- it made sense to do so, since it's set in the 50s) + how her mother would make little digs about stuff like that. It was also refreshing to see Midge let loose (a tiny bit) after she separated from her husband, although it would've been nice to see a bit more of that internal commentary in later seasons

I’ve watched Gilmore girls once a year since I was 12 and honestly it always baffles me that the girls look so beautiful. It’s made me go absolutely mental about diets, validation from men and being ‘perfect.

  • @silverco2560

Our bodies ALWAYS reflect what we eat, don’t fool yourselves by thinking otherwise. Variations in metabolism don’t cause dramatic weight differences, someone with a very fast metabolism may be able to eat perhaps 100-200 extra calories, but not much more than that.
My friends are always telling me they’re jealous of my fast metabolism, because I’m skinny and eat a lot, but the truth is I basically only eat full meals in social situations during weekends. I can easily forget about eating properly for days and then go out with friends and eat a bunch because I’m literally starving, and then go back to not eating for days again. It’s an unhealthy habit that I’m really ashamed of, I don’t even like being this skinny, but it’s the true reason why I don’t gain weight from eating junk food.
So, if you see someone skinny that appears to eat a lot like the Gilmore Girls characters, they probably aren’t. Maybe they are exercising a lot too. There’s just no way to overeat calories and stay skinny.

  • @827Sunflower
    @827Sunflower 2 роки тому +136

I think another excuse behind the writers “fast metabolism” thing is that we are actually never supposed to believe what Lorelai says when she’s performing her sarcastic rants. Even though she says she hates exercise and eating healthy, doesn’t mean she actually refrains from it. We as viewers don’t see it so we must trust Lorelai’s “truth” which is questionable.
In season 4 when Rory goes to Yale, Rory goes back home and sees Lorelai has tomatos on her stove. Lorelai also craves an apple during Sookie’s second labor. Lorelai seems capable of eating fruits and vegetables and DOES. We as an audience, are just not meant to believe she does and I think it’s because that’s typical Lorelai.
I also think of the moment in season 6 when it’s revealed that Lorelai and Michel go on coffee dates to Westons bakery and have chats by themselves. In season 2/3 Lorelai goes to Westons and refrains from drinking the coffee cause it’s just not Luke’s coffee. Justifiably the audience then regards Luke’s coffee as better and the only coffee Lorelai is capable of consuming. I was kinda shook when I learned about her and Michel’s coffee dates because one it’s Michel and two … other coffee ?!?! Impossible…
But now we know Lorelais word is not her bond and when she’s with Rory its sarcasm overload and frankly very dramatic speeches pertaining to what they are capable of consuming😂.
I think you bring up fabulous points and ultimately the writers are playing a very dangerous game when purporting the cool girl mythology onto the characters. Not to mention, it’s effects on the audience. One time I saw Rory make a huggeee bowl of Rice Krispies cereal
, Lorelai proceeded to add mini marshmallows. Rory the milk. And then Rory never takes a bite but Lorelai consumes the bowl. I’ve been craving Rice Krispies and mini marshmallows ever SINCE! Knowing it might wreak havoc on my body because I suffer from bloating issues but I can’t resist. It’d be nice and healthy as a viewer watching the show to them put non chemically processed
things into their bodies in such visually jarring amounts when they totally didn’t in real life.
Kind of like Monica from friends. She plays a chef who struggled with her food intake and her relationship with it and makes a variety of balanced foods at home but on set the actor ate salads every single day to maintain her figure. I never saw the character Monica eat a salad and that’s a real discrepancy.

This was so insightful and wonderful. I haven’t seen the show in a long time (I used to watch it when it came out, when I was around 8), and I thought Rory’s life was so amazing. She was one of the TV characters I wanted to emulate, because we already had a lot in common- brown hair, smart, living in New England- but I always found it so ridiculously unfair that she and her mom could eat Mac and cheese and burgers and fries *all the time*, and look the way they did, while I was overweight (even as a kid) and on a diet all the time (guided by a registered dietician). I also played sports- it made no sense! Even then, I harbored deep resentment against these characters, for making me feel like something was wrong with me all the time, and I was missing out on spontaneity and indulging in great food (especially as a bonding experience) that fed my soul.
