Scott, the GameBoy Light and SP-001 have a *front* light, not a backlight. The distinction being that the light is on top of the screen instead of behind it. Backlights generally provide a better picture, while frontlight displays don't suffer from washout in direct sunlight.
Hi sine730, do you know which kind of light it was? I think Lynx and Game Gear actually had an incandescent light bulb, which needs tons of energy, resulting in a terrible battery life. Seriously, Game Gear by far had the better portable games 1991-1996. The only reasons the GameBoy wins out is a 12 year lifespan and a more practical hardware design
Despite every claim only Japan got this model, I am almost certain the Game Boy Light was sold officially in Brazil by Gradiente (the company behind Nintendo licensing in Brazil during the 90s). I have clear memories of it in big shops, but unfortunately I can't find proofs or traces of that. Mandela effect, maybe?

So bizarre that they did the LIGHT but didn't do Color Light or even GBA Light either. I already had 2 GBAs from the L button wearing out so I never got an SP until recently. The Original DS was my first backlight handheld. Thanks for waiting SO long Nintendo!

The edit at 8:52 really made no sense because I thought it was saying the GBL was the best for people who didn’t want anything GBC or later, but then the edit shows the Pocket & OG from before the GBC & Light.
Honestly a big reason I can see to use this is if you want to play Game Boy games in their native color palettes, whereas if you play Game Boy games on a Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advanced you'd get that weird color palette where it makes everything much more blue with random red/pink added to areas which sometimes looks fine but other times it can look kind of off depending on how it's used. (And also apparently you could change the color palettes around by hitting directional buttons while holding B during the startup screen, but I didn't even know that was a thing until over 20 years later.) So I guess I am that weirdo that would use a Game Boy Light over a Game Boy Color.
That Gameboy Light came out exactly when it had too. Go back and use the Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, and Gameboy color. They can all be played in broad daylight, with Ambient Light because of the Reflective quality I explained before. The only issue was when things went dark, so you needed a Backlight to be able to play. Otherwise you could literally play a Gameboy in the dark, By only using the Reflected light from the Street Lamp that's bouncing off your wall of you angle it right. That's how we used to play as kids. Once that Gameboy Advance came out and they swapped to traditional LCD we lost that Light Reflectivity, and then they had to come out with the SP. Sorry Scotty, you were just too Young to Understand, but I totally get your point because of how we use Screens on TV, Phones, Computers and So on. But back in the day, the Gamboy, up to the color was the only Widely available technology that used a non traditional Screen, and with it came certain ways of how you went about it. I actually remember hating the Gameboy Advance Screen, just because it made playing during the day a massive Eye Strain with the dark screen.
First saw this on a cruise, and a girl was playing on GB Light. I was disappointed to find it was in no shops I knew sadly. Was really jealous compared to my pocket.
Aye, that made jumping to the GBC so much more of a no brainer. AA batteries seem to be universally ubiquitous so they were easy to find / swap out, while AAA batteries are like 10% as common, so I often plugged my GBP into the wall most of the time
The problem with Game Gear specifically is that, there's actually really good games for it, they just never came out here. I think one of the standouts that would have appealed here is Sylvan Tale, which is similar to Zelda, but it was never available in english until fans translated it. I've played a little bit of that English translation, and the game is absolutely gorgeous, especially for Game Gear and Handhelds of that time. Same with that Ronald McDonald game that was Japan only. I played that recently and that feels just as good as any top tier Game Boy game, but again it never came out here.
The reason why the gameboy worked, was because color AND backlit screens went through batteries quick. So none of those meant the thing had an insane battery life. Then once the gameboy color finally came out, it was even better considering the fact the thing was twice the power, with color, AND had better battery life, that everyone knew Sega and Atari should’ve waited for color. Especially since Segas game gear is just a Sega master system but mobile…. So no wonder it took soo much power. A backlit screen for the gameboy color would’ve made it pretty much perfect.
The backlight reminds me a lot of an old digital watch, both in form and in color, and especially an old Timex Indiglo. Like, I almost wonder if they employ similar technology.

The Game Boy Light takes 2 AA batteries, while the Pocket takes 2 AAA batteries.
Luigi Approved
The reason why the gameboy worked, was because color AND backlit screens went through batteries quick. So none of those meant the thing had an insane battery life.
Then once the gameboy color finally came out, it was even better considering the fact the thing was twice the power, with color, AND had better battery life, that everyone knew Sega and Atari should’ve waited for color. Especially since Segas game gear is just a Sega master system but mobile…. So no wonder it took soo much power.
A backlit screen for the gameboy color would’ve made it pretty much perfect.
I ❤ Game Boy Light 💡
Just came back from Japan and very bummed I wasn't able to find a Game Boy Light while I was there :(, did pick up the Famicom Game Boy Micro though!
I love the light, its my favorite revision but they're so expensive, I had to sell mine to help pay for my analogue pocket
The backlight reminds me a lot of an old digital watch, both in form and in color, and especially an old Timex Indiglo. Like, I almost wonder if they employ similar technology.
