Legend has it that if Coach John pins this comment everyone in the comment section will hit a homerun in their next at bat.

Very good video. Working with our 11u team a lot on their hitting and all around fundamentals.
Never realized how much you pick up over the years playing until I started coaching and explaining the little things.

We need something like that grip in our 8-10 yrs old instructional league one less this to worry about when teaching the kids to hit

I need a few of those big league grips. We took a team who won 1 game out of 40 plus games. Turn their attitude about hitting around and went from single a to AAA in two years. Watching alot of your mechanics in hitting. Thanks for the videos

The best thing I did for grip is to hold the handle farther away from my thumbs. From the finger tips there's that first set of knuckles then it's that second set of knuckles where I lay the handle then wrap the rest of my hand around that. For a righty batter it's at the base of the right thumb that gets stung bad if you get jammed. I've never had a problem once I started holding the bat handle farther away from my thumbs. Seems like I also have more control and bat speed. You don't really need any kind of grip aid if you start out with the right grip.

Great video!!!! Thank you for posting these to help us Dad/coaches to help our teams on things that the kids struggle with. Great points in here and will definitely be implementing these to our team. We could definitely use that grip to help our kids work on there timing for their swings!

  • @phardiman84

Great points on teaching the stride in progression. For really young kids, maybe 1st timers, the stride is too advanced. Keeping it simple is key for young minds, with short attention spans.

I have coached youth ball for many years... AND … in training them , it does take a youth approach mentality in order to share a coaches knowledge successfully . You have a great understanding of the process. Thanks for sharing . The grip looks like a great training tool to add to the tool box in order to teach the fundamentals of the swing. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Coach! Awesome help and hints for coaches and parents around the world! This helps a lot of coaches! I do truly believe mechanics is the root of a good swing.
If I were to win the contest I would have my team to use it with our Easton thunderstruck drills. This should help with correcting their grip while improving their tracking skills. Kills 2 birds with 1 stone!

I'm always looking to get my two boys and daughter something to help them with there swing. There grip with there little hands is something that is always challenging. But I'm always skeptical about buying something and it doesn't work. So if you are giving away a grip and it works the way you say it does. I would love to implement in my kids batting practices. Thanks for great Vid. Heading to cages to to work on it now.

First year coach here and I use your videos for advice daily. Also watch some of the other guys you have collaborated with found them on your channel. Big league grip would be great for the few kids on the team struggling with proper grip and my son included. He likes to open up and I just started getting him to start closed off so when he does take that stride he doesn’t open up as much. Thanks for the videos much appreciated

  • @jaiewall8673

I would use the Big League Grip to reinforce how important it is to always go back to the basics when you find yourself struggling in areas that you previously excelled. My son is currently a freshman. He made his varsity team. He has played competitive/travel ball since he was 7 yrs old. We have played on the best teams in our area and at the highest level. Perfect Game etc. He has always hit in the 3/4 hole for every team. This year he struggled. Due to such high expectations, in my opinion, he was trying to do too much. IF THE HANDS ARE NOT RIGHT YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED AT HITTING.

Have you looked at Ken Griffey Jr's arms at contact? One of the best ways to get those positions is to do front arm only swings.

I coach Pony League baseball. I think your videos are great. We were in the cage today doing soft toss and full bp. One of my young 12 year olds is having an issue with what you refer to as an athletic stance. Everything in this video was perfect for his situation. I can't wait until next bp to implement this. I would love to mix in the grip also. Thank you, John.

My Grand son had been tearing the cover off the ball this year.He was hitting like .800 with lots of home runs. His last 2 games he had hit the ball but they were weak hits.
I took him to the field and we hit off the tee. That is when I notice he was not standing like he usally does..with his butt out and bent over.As soon as I gt him into the right stance
he drove the ball hard and far. Thanks for validing that I was correct about his tsance.

Ur right its a challenge trying to relate my knowledge of softball Mechanics to these girls. So with the bat grip, I'm sure it would help the girls understand better if they have an actual guide to match up with what I'm saying.

I'm a little confused about the role of the hands in the swing. Am I supposed to snap my wrists at impact? Or is that something that should happen naturally? Thanks!

    • @Ireland831

With a proper swing, the hands will unhinge thru the hitting zone naturally. You don't want to unhinge the hands too early.

This video is good, but I think the kids would need to have at least a mediocre stance for this advice to work. We have about eight kids who stand stick straight and I can't seem to get them to bend their knees for anything. I can get a few of them to get semi-athletic by saying "bounce bounce" to them right before they receive a pitch, but I would have to keep saying it over and over every pitch. I'm coaching kid-pitch 10U. Any advice?
