Head nodding showing interest! Thanks Mr. Shug and associates, I really enjoyed the virtual tag along with the FB hangers! In winter I am still a lowly bottom feeding, ground snow dweller. But I aspire to hang my posterior in the frosty air!
Very cool video. I am totally impressed. I am really addicted to my Hennessey hammock. My sons' Boy Scout troop has an annual Winter Campout each February but nothing compared to this. I have been working on a way to make my Hennessey warmer; but you guys are just totally hardcore. I like that. You got a new subscriber
Awesome. I just started hammocking a year or so ago and have no plans of going back to trying to sleep on a pad in a tent. My brother and I wanted to get up there to join you guys, but we couldn't make the schedules work. Great vid Shug.
Man that snow was like powder! Down here what little snow we do get is more like a cherry slushy minus the cherry. Always good to have a little sass in the group. Let me know when you decide to do a Hawaiian islands hang : )
Yup fur sure. I was ! Don't worry. I hate the human condition as well. You guys have any mother nature to smoke? Might have made it more tolerable....lol
I did have those with me just took them off for mobility on the wood gathering quest. They did help some but we were all sinking a lot. More than usual. Thanks.
Out here we usually don't have that problem. we call our snow "Cascade Concrete" because of it's high moisture content if tends to be pretty stiff as long as the temps stay down after it falls.
Great fellowship....what a bunch....on the stove, my vote is a Fancee Feese with a small 180 Flame wood stick stove as a backup when you run out of alcohol.
used a svea and an optimus for years. preferred the optimus. Never replaced either when they died. Real cold I use a fire or during the spring restriction of open fires. Heet stove works great. Great vid. Campers are good folk!
Primus had a pan to put fuel or paste in to ignite and prime the stove--very handy feature. It was square and not as tippy as the Svea. It's hood was also a cooking pot. I only used it down to low negative temps: 0- 5 degrees. Didn't replace it as the price went up considerably from the initial purchase. Sticker shock--no whatta mean? Luv your vids bro.
I live in San Diego, California. I watch your video's with delight and envy. I went out with a friend duck hunting the other morning and it was 30+ degrees and I thought I would loose my fingers. It sure looks like fun when I am watching on UA-cam and the temperature here is 80 outside on this date Jan. 21, 2014. I have thought seriously about moving to Arkansas or somewhere less costly with decent hunting and fishing, but being a native San Diegan I am not sure I can adabt to the cold.
When is the Frozen Butt Hang in Minnesota for 2016? I'm from New Mexico and wanting to take a road trip soon but I need ideas on where to go. I'm thinking Florida for Strength Camp Gym with Elliott Hulse. And Maybe Minnesota for the Frozen Butt Hang. Or if there are any hang camps like this does't have to be * frozen butt hang closer to New Mexico than Minnesota. However it would be a pleasure of meeting you Shug!
+Bridger Spearing All the hammockforum hangs are planned and announced on hammockforums.net There is a thread called Hangouts and is organized by regions. Best place to find out about it as we get to know each other as members there.
A Svea stove!!! I still have the one my dad got in the late 60's/early 70's and used throughout my formative camping days. We cooked many a lunch on Adirondack mountain tops back then. I'll have to get it out and try to fire it up after seeing that.
You guys are great, I wish I had been able to join you, This UA-cam channel is a new thing for me but you guys helped me decide to become a hammock hiker and I cant wait to meet you all in person. I decided to walk away from Facebook a bit and ended up here. out in the woods making videos is better Bob
i just went out on my weather hang in Harriman State Park, NY.The first night I was toasty inDIY TQ\UQ. Second night my my UQ must have moved or maybe it was the Jim Bean. It got down to 14* I was cold and feeling a draft.
So, Chuck and I hung in the Sipsey Wilderness last weekend. 25-30 degrees in north Alabama!!! Now, we got three whole inches of snow. Had to put people up in our home cuz our interstate locked down. But, that's how we do it in the south. Gonna do cheaha this weekend. Ok, my butt froze, cuz by Bamians standards that is a cold one shug. Whooo betty, Mary of Chuck. flysubcompact
Hi Shug! Always love watching your videos... informative and entertaining and yes there must be something wrong with all of us to watch a man who speaks in third person about how there is something wrong with him... LOL.
Waiiit a minute. I live in Finland and by Finland I mean the country not that village :D Got a bit too excited by the title of the video, but anyways it's a nice video keep 'em coming. The coldest i've slept outside was -30C but that was in the army and gladly we had warmed tents for the few hours a day we got to sleep in them..
I would love to make a Frozen Butt Hang some time, but considering the coldest it gets down here is about 30F, any suggestions on proper winter Hammock gear? I've seen a few use a Hammock Sock, and I currently have a Noah 12' tarp from Kelty as an all weather tarp, but what ese would you suggest for a Southern boy trying to reach the frozen north?
+silentpaw Good down sleeping bag or TQ. 0º or better. Boots, gloves, hats, parkas ets. Lots of standing around in the cold...ua-cam.com/video/bA-ZKDgpUZA/v-deo.html Winter tips...ua-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZL-DOvRgYo-W6qquKQdK35e.html
It's the rare and lucky man that knows such. You read much? I write. Did millwork for many years - twenty on my own - then walked away from it for health reasons. I have several novels... Free to you.
Hey Shug, greetings again from great white north. I would like to ask you where you got that wicked green wool hoodie that you be wearing in your latest vids. I wouldn't mind getting one. It looks warm as hell, and that sounds just fine for up here in the frigid Arctic. Thank man. BTW, I have to admit, every once in a while I want to hop in the car and head out to your neck of the woods, in hopes of catching a distant "WOOOOOOO BUDDY.". Alas, I am reminded that it is a four day drive. Lol. Keep up the good work Shug.
Up hear we call ketchup, Canadian gravy. I was impressed with the amount of snow. I have not seen snow up to my crotch since I was a kid ... wait a minute. ;-)
No kidding that snow was like sugar. Lol. Looked like a blast though, good people good times. Was your tarp loud enough to keep you awake? I usually bring earplugs in windy days.
Mr. Shug, you sure know how to make your audience jealous, that looked like a great way to spend the cold winter weekends. A quick question, what is the name and brand of the rainfly/tarp you have over your hammock, I been looking for one for a while now, and I like the set up you have.
Shug I apologize for posting so often, but I had to tell you this. Gaelic Storm is playing Minneapolis this year on St. Patricks' day. I've seen them live twice, once in San Francisco and once in Sacramento. A good time was had by all. As for the Niners, it's just a game, now excuse me while I go off and sulk. After I recover from that, I have to pay my brother from Washington State. The wages of sin.
Waiting for the Smokys to get really hit with snow in Cades Cove. Looks like you had a great time. Well here is a stand at attention about face drop the drawers shoot the moon salute to the frozen butt hang.
Ah AH Humor.... The snow was so SHUG-ery.... Well it's good to see that you're surviving the "POLAR VORTEX"...LOL Survived the holidays as well I see....LOL

We sure had fun and hammocks are just a way to go….not the way to go. As long as you get out there. Thankee.
Yay! Always a pleasure to go along for the ride. Thanks for taking us! That sounded like some mighty crunchy snow!
Squeaky snow!
Grand show! Always a good day when Shug's camera goes flying! Thanks for taking your fingers out in the cold for filming!
I do love throwing a camera! Thankee.
Great time in the piney woods.
Nice to meet you shug, thanks for all your videos, and your hard work.
Hope Indiana was well represented.
Really enjoyed talking with you too. Hope it was worth the journey and thanks for bringing the good grub.
Wow that looks like a lot of fun. Winter camping used to be my favorite but my health won't let me do it any more. I really enjoy your videos.
Thanks and hope you good health.
A lot of fun here, thanks Shug
Thank you.
LOVE the sound of the snow crunching while you walked. The HF Ludington, MI Hang is in a couple of weeks, an I'm looking forward to attending.
Here is to a terrific hang.
Well thanks. Underquilts or at least good pads extend the season a lot. Fun to hang out in the cold. Carry forth.
Awesome. I just started hammocking a year or so ago and have no plans of going back to trying to sleep on a pad in a tent. My brother and I wanted to get up there to join you guys, but we couldn't make the schedules work. Great vid Shug.
Whoooo Buddy.
Looked good time, don't have my hammock setup yet to handle that kind of cold.
Such a good time ….and nobody froze)))))
Man that snow was like powder! Down here what little snow we do get is more like a cherry slushy minus the cherry.
Always good to have a little sass in the group. Let me know when you decide to do a Hawaiian islands hang : )
It sure was. We did have a great time. Those big hangs are exhausting.
Heading to The Gorge on Friday. Might get a wee bit of snow. Hanging in The Gorge!!!
Whooooo Buddy. Say Hey from me.
Roger that!
And once again, whooo buddy from Finland! Happy times Shug!
Monet kiitokset meidän pikku Suomessa.
Perfect hang it was. Maybe one in your Finland someday)))))
Enjoy the photography shug, keep up the good views. Really nice makes me feel like I'm right there!
You were there…kinda sorta! Thank you.
Yup fur sure. I was ! Don't worry. I hate the human condition as well. You guys have any mother nature to smoke? Might have made it more tolerable....lol
Great video. Thanks for the effort. I know what a pain it is to keep your batteries charged. I love the wool hoddie jason sent me a few years ago.
I carry five batteries and keep them against my body in a pocket. Those wool hoodies are really something. Especially with our huge fires!
You know what I'm talking about....more out there than just our self centered kind. I see you appreciate the peace it brings.
Ten-four on that!
For the MSR snow shoes you can get the accessory tail add ons. They give you a little extra flotation. Looks like a fun time.
Не часто бываю в лесу, ваши видео - это отдушина! Уу Бади!
Рад, что вы добрались, чтобы наблюдать нашу забаву. Спасибо.
Great fellowship....what a bunch....on the stove, my vote is a Fancee Feese with a small 180 Flame wood stick stove as a backup when you run out of alcohol.
+RS Marett I use my MSR Whisperlite white gas stove for seroius snow melting in deep winter.
that ole MSR Whisperlite let you down one time in -32 and you threatened to "go Coleman" on them...haha...remember that....
used a svea and an optimus for years. preferred the optimus. Never replaced either when they died. Real cold I use a fire or during the spring restriction of open fires. Heet stove works great. Great vid. Campers are good folk!
Looking to get a Primus. Thanks.
Primus had a pan to put fuel or paste in to ignite and prime the stove--very handy feature. It was square and not as tippy as the Svea. It's hood was also a cooking pot. I do think you adjust to where you relocate to. I would have to build up a heat and beach-beauty tolerance)))) Thankee.
What do I do after a cold day at work? I watch you freeze your butt off! Thanks man you give me hope for humanity.WooBuddie
Whoooo Buddy)))))
Love the Colonel Flagg reference, greatest side character on best sitcom ever! Thanks for the upload Shug.
Ahhh…you got that! I use that term a lot and I do Col. Flagg. Gone.
Thanks for sharing Sir! Cheers!
Thankee.
Another fun camping trip thanks for the video

Awesome video Shug. Loved the look of that pile of crispy bacon.
That said, I sure appreciate the winters in South Carolina.
Swampfox

Nice video Shug, was waiting on it. Pretty chilly this yr in MN!
Cold again here at home. -14º tonight.
Looks like good people, good times and lots of fun.

We are just pickers and do it for fun....
Your filming technique just keeps getting better, keep up the good work.
Thankee big time.
Svea is a cool piece of backpacker history right there.. back from the start of the weight weenie days.
It is for sure. Classic classic.
A Svea stove!!! I still have the one my dad got in the late 60's/early 70's and used throughout my formative camping days. We cooked many a lunch on Adirondack mountain tops back then. I'll have to get it out and try to fire it up after seeing that.
Hope you find it.
hey shug, long time no see brother ! man you guys are CRAZY for going out in to the great white and haven a hang ! hope you stay safe !
Been a long three weeks me reckon…..
Looked cold enough for me.Another great video.
Much obliged.
Hey Shug, I enjoyed watching that!
Thanks. Enjoyed doing it.
You guys are great, I wish I had been able to join you, This UA-cam channel is a new thing for me but you guys helped me decide to become a hammock hiker and I cant wait to meet you all in person. I decided to walk away from Facebook a bit and ended up here. out in the woods making videos is better

Are you a hammock forums member. We all put it together on there. It was a big fun time for sure.
Yes I am, just haven't been on facebook in a while.
i just went out on my weather hang in Harriman State Park, NY.The first night I was toasty inDIY TQ\UQ. Second night my my UQ must have moved or maybe it was the Jim Bean. It got down to 14* I was cold and feeling a draft.
Snug 'er up a bit.
looked well chank! awesome video as always shug!
We chanked it!
Mighty funny stuff there Shugrow ... mighty funny. Dang if I didn't have to put a sweater on just to watch this one! ;-)
Still got a chapped nose….
So, Chuck and I hung in the Sipsey Wilderness last weekend. 25-30 degrees in north Alabama!!! Now, we got three whole inches of snow. Had to put people up in our home cuz our interstate locked down. Haaaa…..Thankee fro Shug of the Third Person
Looks like a good time was had sir! You guys sure know how to eat!
We grazed constantly. Thankee.
Just bought a Hennessy Expedition hammock. Itching to try it out.
Whoooooo Buddy.
Did the parachute help much retaining the heat from the fire? I would think any breeze would make it not worth the effort.
It keeps the snow off and just makes a great fire gathering spot. The tarps keep the wind at bay and that helped a lot.
I have been to your fine Finland as well....did not have a chance to camp though. I'll be back....

I like you're camping videos.
Thankee feller.
I'm jealous, Shug!
I am very lucky.
It's the rare and lucky man that knows such.
You read much? I write. Did millwork for many years - twenty on my own - then walked away from it for health reasons. I have several novels... Free to you.
Cool hang I would like more people to take an interest in do this kind of stuff an get out in the woods
We had a big lot out there.
OMG! "Only 21 Degrees, Not Even That Cold" Looks like a great time!
It felt almost warm! Thanks again. Reckon your Texan?
***** Yep, Born and raised in Texas and it is warm here today. 67 degrees.
What is the name of the stove at 10:50 ?
It should say on there….Svea Stove.
Hey Shug have you ever setup 2 hammocks under 1 tarp before? If so what is the best way?
I never have. Some do side by side with spreader bars on the suspension.
When ur treking poles are extended all the way out, how tall are they? When I pitch my fly out it seems alot lower to the ground than urs.
Your tarp may be pitched higher than mine perhaps....
how is the frost bitten finger doing from your last video?
It is healing up. Like a bad burn. Thanks.
As always shug a great time
It was, it was.
The link is in the description box below the video. Borel Wool Shirt….Lester River Bushcraft.
Ha ha that was fun to watch Shug. :-)
Mucho Obligato.
Shug, what thermometer brand is that? Great vids!
A Springfield…….got it years ago.
Btw, who carried that big tarp out there on their pack? Mary
It was Jason's Parachute so I think he or Madhob did.
Not one mention Medaglia D'oro....how did you survive?
I drank mine from the hammock. Then cowboy coffee by the group.
Up hear we call ketchup, Canadian gravy. I was impressed with the amount of snow. I have not seen snow up to my crotch since I was a kid ... wait a minute. ;-)
I love your Gravy. We sure did have a good bit up there. Was so much a terrific hang. Haaaaaaa….tall kid?
No kidding that snow was like sugar. Lol. Looked like a blast though, good people good times.
Was your tarp loud enough to keep you awake? I usually bring earplugs in windy days.
I could hear the wind more than the tarp. Had a good pitch on it so it was quiet. Love hearing that cold wind….
Hey shug do you know what the name of those green overboots/ overshoes that a few of those guys are wearing, or were I can get them ?
chaddy21waddy They are...I think....Swiss Air Force mukluks. Maybe an Army/Navy store
Thanks buddy I will see what I can find !
+chaddy21waddy
I think those are N-1B Air Force Snow/Extreme Cold Weather Mukluks Boots. I was planning on getting them too.
Goodtimes..
I loved the end LOL that was funny.
Thanks for the video =D
We had so much fun.
Mr. Shug, you sure know how to make your audience jealous, that looked like a great way to spend the cold winter weekends. A quick question, what is the name and brand of the rainfly/tarp you have over your hammock, I been looking for one for a while now, and I like the set up you have.
That is a tarp that I made. But you should check out the Warbonnet Superfly Tarp. www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/tarps/
Wow, that's about what I was looking for, thank you
Hi Shug
The tarp you use - which can be closed - where did you buy it or maybe you have made it?!
mvh
Martin from Denmark
I actually made that tarp as my winter tarp. Added doors as an add on.
***** Damn ... thought so. Homemade. Super good idea;)
Thanks for the quick reply and the many outdoor life video's;)
Mvh

Shug, what camera do you use to film all of your outdoor adventures?
It is a Canon ELPH 110 HS.
Thanks for the info Shug.
".....mmmmGRUELLLLL....." it's not just for breakfast anymore!
it's a whole country, within a state!
Well said for sure.
"...crawl into some hammock glory..."
