You're awesome, Shug. I'd been really dilly-dallying on getting a hammock camping setup going for-- oh, at least 8 years now. Thanks to your videos I just got my HH hammock and JRB's quilts and feel confident going into the forest. And thanks for showing just overnighters! This is inspiring. Knowing you can just hike a bit in, test your setup, grow some confidence.
As much as I love camping in spring summer and fall there is nothing like the forest in winter to make you feel alive. Loved that intro shot with the fog, gorgeous!
The lake footage in the beginning was incredible. And bells two hearted ale warming up by the fire...much respect. Good to see you guys out there pushing the limits for the rest of us.
Love the crunching, cold snow videos that You do with your buddies. Different stoves, that can still be used in such cold conditions. Reflective heat, to melt liquids that have frozen. And most certainly different ways that one keeps himself warm in such frigid conditions sleeping in a hammock. Your video's always bring up, "what if" & "things to ponder on" for me, even though I live on an Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. There's always something that I can learn, borrow and tweak from you. Safe journeys and a very Happy New Year to You and Your Ohana!! (Family)
I have watched all you videos...where does a guy start should have been my question. .yanks for takin time to.answer... love you back.yard videos...I have learned a lot from you ...I'm am.52...spent my.life outdoors ...this hammock in the winter is peaked my interest but have no idea where to start ...don't want to.waste money
Great job shug. love the intro shot of the cold morning on the lake. love how the big lake can look so different every time. I wish I had been there with my camera. Keep shuggin' on!
Thanks for the videos..... did my 1st -12F and know the setup can do -20F easily... maybe more... UQ's 0deg HG Incubator + 30deg HG Econ Incubator. TQ's 40deg HG Econ Burrow + 20deg UGQ. 2QZQ UQ protector... used a military sleeping bag system bivy for over the TQ's to help keep condensation from breath from dropping as I have not made a "frost bib" yet. had a very slight amount of interior condensation from body moisture. Great night! Had to drop a few layers on so get my self down to just my thermals as I was just too darn hot! Like so many others have also stated..... these videos get us all thinking and get us motivated to get out there and get hangin'.....
Same temps here Shug. I almost never let weather change my plans. If I did I would rarely leave the house. Nice seeing someone out enjoying the outdoors.😊
I love these vids of you in the woods, I just got back from Ouray Colorado, not very cold but here in florida it is 32. 32 here feels colder than 17 in Colorado.
Hey shug, I just got back from my first -18° camp. I gotta say It was fabulous! Watching your videos really inspred me to get out in this beautiful weather and enjoy the cold. Thanks again and stay warm ❤
Actually getting to watch your new video from the hammock. Because of you I’ve learned so much about hammock camping and I love it! Just wanna say thanks for all the great videos and knowledge you pass on. Whoooooooo Buddy!!!!
I love your winter camping videos so much! Last week I finally got to try out my steger mukluks in -6F degrees and it was great. I would have never known about them if it weren't for you so thank you!
I was wondering when you would release another video. Always look forward your videos, particularly your winter ones. I am staggered the kit was able to go so far below its threshold.
I was in the woods near Ely on Tuesday night and near Isabella on Wednesday night. I was warm both nights using a pod system like Jonah's. I sewed a synthetic bag to an old homemade hammock so that the zipper stays where I can zip it shut. Used a 20° HG uq outside and a 20° Wilderness Logics king top quilt inside. Keeping water from freezing was the biggest challenge. I need to perfect that before my next deep freeze trip.
I brewed up a cup of tea for this one. Whew weeeee I love it! Scenes from the icy shoreline were beautiful. I bet there wasn't a creature stirring except for you warm blooded animals. Good stuff!
I thought about you as temps. dropped, shug! I just got back from a short hike at -9; South Twin Cities Metro. I'm looking at a Wookie myself, so it was good to hear more about it's true capability. Thanks much!
I always enjoy watching your stuff, Shug. I've slept comfortably in my hammock and under quilt down to minus 8. It's not that I wouldn't be OK at colder temps, but they're much harder to find here than in Minnesota.
At Mount Le Conte in the Smokys you cant make a fire which makes minus 20s pretty cold. When we were allowed to make fires one night it got to minus 28. I had two 6 ounce pre square yard primaloft jackets one over the other I was so warm I could get close to the fire or I would have ignighted from heat. My gloves or mitts were the Wiggys super mitts with 4 ounce inserts. Boy those are warm. Love watching all your videos.
Shug what a great video and getting closer to Thunder Bay my friend. We just finally broke out of the cold temps of -30 to -38c after 4 days and some light snow today (Friday Dec 29). Yup been all through that area Ely, Finland, Red Lake all the campgrounds and of course canoed the border lakes. Happy New Year my friend from Thunder Bay.......Fred
Love it, Shug wonders whether he is normal hammocking at -27...I need to rethink going to the ground for my winter AT thru-hike start. Shug, thank you for this channel, it is really a great benefit to the community. Cheers, Scars.
Hey Shug, speaking of managing the cold, do you have any ideas about how to keep the feet warm(er) during short scenery or rest stops? I am thinking some sort of light bootie which slips over the trail runners. Any suggestions?
Wow, that's crazy. You Sir have got some serious kahunas. Seems to me any miscalculation and a trip like that could go south quick. I imagine peeing in the middle of the night must be a special treat lol.
I knew ya' couldn't resist the cool weather!! It's could be +3deg.F here in Tennessee New Years morn'! I think I'm gona give it a shot! Great overnight.... Happy New Year Sir! ZZ.
I can’t brag about my 15 degree trip anymore. LOL! Did my coldest trip so far while visiting family in NC. We were somewhere near the Cataloochee Divide Trail.
Great video as always Shug. We are only getting in the teens here in Charlotte . When people say It is crazy to be out I refer them to you, Woooo Buddy!
I spy with my little eye... Bell's Two Hearted Ale!!! That's some serious cold, it was -14 here yesterday morning when I got off of work and I was NOT prepared. lol Looks fun Shug!
Ohh buddy! A gear review and technical analysis like no other. I was looking at the National chill map and I thought “He’s gonna do it! He’s a goin’ out into **The Elements**!!”
Dang buddy, coldest weather I ever stayed outside was -25 Celsius and it was brutal! Much respect and you really took that underquilt to a test! Cheers, Marc
Always go into the new year hoping for many a trip but of course family, life and gigs always come first. When time opens I grab pack and go! Thankee. Best of the Newborn year to ya'll.
Hey really like your videos. Helped me figure out the hammock thing. Wanted to let ya know i suggested your channel for hammock tips in one of my videos.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you, Shug! Hope you have a great 2018! Great video as always my friend - that shot with the lake was just beautiful; felt like another realm!
awesome vid as usual shug. I just got back from an overnight in algonquin with a -36 C severe winter cold advisory. Still had a great night in the hammock despite being so cold the camera would shut down after a few minutes.
shugemery Yeah, sure is changing... i miss good winters. Lots of snow and sunshine. Been. all gray here. Well, hoping to try my Incubator soon! Will get it next week :) Happy trails!
I got a Loco libre 20 degree synthetic I'm eally liking. Wanted a mat3ching topquilt but Geoge isn't making the at the moment. Went with a synthetic Aruwwhead top quilt and have been sleeping comfortably ever since.

The lake was breathtaking that morning.
The lake footage in the beginning was incredible. And bells two hearted ale warming up by the fire...much respect. Good to see you guys out there pushing the limits for the rest of us.
It was nice. The beers were Alex and Jonah's. I drink milk.
You are a Minnesota treasure, Shug!
Naw...just having some MN fun. Thanks.
Just amazing your hammock system’s kept you all so warm!😱👍👍
Cold in the hammock up here is the thing! ua-cam.com/video/CTuGJgka1qc/v-deo.html

Thanks for the kind words. Let it be a top notch year.
Never been in a hammock but I will soon enough. Some great info you share and you never ask for a thing. Made me a follower!
Embrace the hammock quest.
Informative while being entertaining. Thank you for sharing your trip. God bless and stay safe.
Thankee.

Great job shug. love the intro shot of the cold morning on the lake. love how the big lake can look so different every time. I wish I had been there with my camera. Keep shuggin' on!
It was magical. Had to get out and film.
Lake Superior shot in the beginning was breathtaking! Excellent video as usual! Now that’s some serious outdoor camping and hiking 😳!
It was an amazing view for sure!
Thanks for the videos..... did my 1st -12F and know the setup can do -20F easily... maybe more... UQ's 0deg HG Incubator + 30deg HG Econ Incubator. So nice to get out into it and face it head-on! Have fun and thanks.
Thank you. Always a pleasure.
Y'elcome and my pleasure.
Same temps here Shug.
I almost never let weather change my plans. If I did I would rarely leave the house. Nice seeing someone out enjoying the outdoors.😊
Gotta get out and meet it head on!
Absolutely beautiful up there. Thanks for the videos!
And ever-so quiet.
I can almost garantee these were THE ONLY people camping this day in the entire state of MN. Good Stuff Shug
Glad you had a right goodie.
Actually getting to watch your new video from the hammock. Because of you I’ve learned so much about hammock camping and I love it! Just wanna say thanks for all the great videos and knowledge you pass on. Whoooooooo Buddy!!!!
Happy to go camping and learn and pass on.
Nothing quite like a beautiful night sleep in the cool crisp air!!

Always looking for you to brighten up my day. Thanks Shug! Have a video of you setting up your camp to follow up your instructional videos.
Whooooooo Buddy))))))
Thanks again shut. I love the extreme cold camp videos and gear and other tips. Keep up the good work. Den in NH
Wish I could get out every week......
It's even incredible that a camera would operate at such temperatures.
Great video, thanks, and happy new year to you and yours.
I keep it and batteries in pocket against my body to keep it warm. All day and sleep with it that way too.
By far these are your very best videos! Thanks for working so hard to share them with me.
I like trip videos.
Great to see you, Shug. Hope it's a great year ahead for all of us!
We gotta make it great.!
I love your winter camping videos so much! Last week I finally got to try out my steger mukluks in -6F degrees and it was great. I would have never known about them if it weren't for you so thank you!
Good to hear. Warm feet are awesome!
I was wondering when you would release another video. Always look forward your videos, particularly your winter ones. I am staggered the kit was able to go so far below its threshold.
Well going to sleep warm is paramount. But I too was surprised it did so well.
Gotta sleep with it and only keep as much warm water as will stay good in a reflectix cozy. A double cozy. Hope you had fun!
Good call on the double cozy. I get nervous sleeping with water but it might be the only way to go. Thanks for your video and reply.
Looked like a fun adventure! - 27 F is getting just a little chilly 😃👍
Just a touch but we went to get cold!
Another fun subzero adventure Shugg!! Always love to see the gear tested in those conditions. Thanks for the video!
It truly got a test on this trip.
I brewed up a cup of tea for this one. Whew weeeee I love it!
Scenes from the icy shoreline were beautiful. I bet there wasn't a creature stirring except for you warm blooded animals.
Good stuff!
Ahhh a spot of Earl Grey and enjoy the day!
I thought about you as temps. dropped, shug! I just got back from a short hike at -9; South Twin Cities Metro. I'm looking at a Wookie myself, so it was good to hear more about it's true capability. Thanks much!
It sure did real well. Covering the footbox with a parka on UQ truly helps.
Allen Moe Some nice parks in the Bloomington and Eden Prairie areas.
I saw the recent weather forecast for MN and thought, Shug is out in it somewhere. Thanks my friend. You never disappoint.
Was going no matter what the weather!
I always enjoy watching your stuff, Shug. I've slept comfortably in my hammock and under quilt down to minus 8. It's not that I wouldn't be OK at colder temps, but they're much harder to find here than in Minnesota.
Whoooooo Buddy)))) It takes practice and confidence.
That is something that I would like to experience one day. Crazy.
It is weird fun.
At Mount Le Conte in the Smokys you cant make a fire which makes minus 20s pretty cold. When we were allowed to make fires one night it got to minus 28. Warm is good!

Not sure I could camp in August Florida heat!
Love it, Shug wonders whether he is normal hammocking at -27...I need to rethink going to the ground for my winter AT thru-hike start. Shug, thank you for this channel, it is really a great benefit to the community. Cheers, Scars.
Lots of folks hang the whole way on the AT!
Hey Shug, speaking of managing the cold, do you have any ideas about how to keep the feet warm(er) during short scenery or rest stops? I am thinking some sort of light bootie which slips over the trail runners. Any suggestions?
Well I heard on the news that Minnesota was supposed to be extremely cold so I thought I would be seeing a new video from you!
Aye!
Those Jet Sleds are great for doing anything in the snow.
They sure are.
Great vid... Thanks for taking us along
You betcha.
Wow, that's crazy. You Sir have got some serious kahunas. Seems to me any miscalculation and a trip like that could go south quick. I imagine peeing in the middle of the night must be a special treat lol.

Love that Black Rock Gear beanie! The best!
Love them as an in-camp beanie. Super warm.
Much respect, I'm in the northeast we just had that 3 or 4 week cold snap and I can't imagine sleeping out in that and it was -5 to 0
I did get colder than we thought it would!
Looked like a good time to me.
Thanks for the video
Happy to the New Year!
I spy with my little eye... Bell's Two Hearted Ale!!! That's some serious cold, it was -14 here yesterday morning when I got off of work and I was NOT prepared. lol Looks fun Shug!
Alex and Jonan's....
Ohh buddy! A gear review and technical analysis like no other. I was looking at the National chill map and I thought “He’s gonna do it! He’s a goin’ out into **The Elements**!!”
Was happy the gear worked well past expected temps!
Suddenly 30 degrees in Chattanooga seems like shorts and tee shirt weather.
Balmy with BBQ!
Dang buddy, coldest weather I ever stayed outside was -25 Celsius and it was brutal! Much respect and you really took that underquilt to a test! Cheers, Marc
Fun when you got the right gear.
The master of the cold hang, whoooo buddy!!
A Doer of cold hangs I say....
That's a great video Shug. I saw the temp in your area on our local weather show here in Bama and I thought wow, and wondered if you would be camping.

Great video as always my friend - that shot with the lake was just beautiful; felt like another realm!

Happy New Year from the south metro, Shug! Im not enjoying this cold as much as you are though! Thanks for the video!

Well, hoping to try my Incubator soon! Will get it next week :)

Whooooo Buddy))))
Great overnighter shug..the ending was really funny too
Thankee.
holy moly. thats really freezing cold.
I always get asked why I go out in freezing temperatures or raining wheather and spend a night outside
answer is always: you don't remember nights where nothing happened and you don't learn from nights, where it was all easy in your comfort zone.
I wish we would have temperatures about -10 / -15 to check out my gear there.
I'm not even sure why I go!
Matthias Dittgen
Thank you...
Shug you are awesome as always.
Thankee.
Beautiful!!!
Really was.
Happy New Year, Shug
All secure in a very frigid Sector Seven.
