@@deathtoraiden2080 Well, maybe _consistently_ "reach its potential". The first half of S2 has at least one top tier Trek episode IMO but I do agree it's still patchy until S3. More broadly, for sure S1 shouldn't be skipped, there's too much establishing stuff that happens including _at least_ one development that echoes down the years. And then of course there's the _primary_ reason no one should skip anything that some fans tell them to - as Jen is so wonderfully demonstrating, some people may still really enjoy episodes others don't. For me that's one of the joys of reactions - they can be a good antidote to fan groupthink (Jen likes Wesley just fine for instance, despite some commenters insisting that "everyone" hates Wesley).
I would say one could skip the first few episodes. I was a devoted of TOS for the ling period when it was The Only Series. I cannot overstate hiw disappointed I was with the pilot episode. Zero character development,, right into meeting the super-enemy, Q. Then episodes that riffed entirely off TOS, which were not making up for the pilot. And some that were just awful. It took a while before the writing picked up, and longer before we started to care about the the characters, and a few, in my opinion, never recovered from their first-season misuse by the writers. The continuity errors don't help any. But Season 1 is not without good episodes, it just did not start the series off strong.
Don't you ever even think about not saying "commercial break" because it's fantastically amusing. 😂 I watch the entire TNG every few years, but watching with you is amazing!!! Thanks for committing to it.
I really love how Picard on the bridge takes a moment to acknowledge each person as they bring something up. Lieutenant Yar questions trust, in Captain Picard acknowledges that that was a legitimate security question out loud so everyone knew it wasn't a crazy thing to say. That's impressive leadership.
19:50 "I do notice that, from, uh, the original series, Kirk used to go with them _every_ time, but Picard often doesn't." Picard operates in a more cautious time, and Picard is much more of a _diplomat,_ while Kirk is much more of a _cowboy._
Their names are a reference to the axiom of 'trust data, not lore' Which is to say, in science you trust what has been proven and demonstrated not concepts that have simply been passed down or conjecture.
4:51 Mark! Jen! Because of Data's design, when they digitally remastered the original series, the androids and gynoids in it, that had scenes that revealed their insides, got upgraded! For example, when Norman opens his abdominal panel to prove that he is indeed an android, his insides resemble Data's! Originally, they looked like what you expect from a 1960s series. 🖖
Last year I got into watching Next Gen again because Paramount owns Pluto TV and they started showing them on a separate channel there. Of the dozens and dozens I saw before signing up for Paramount Plus, I only ever saw one episode that was pre-season 3, and that was Measure of a Man. The writing still ain't great, not compared to what the show became, but I did watch it from start to finish. But with Jen here, Jen doing the commentary, so much value is added, the gruel is enriched with chocolate and hazelnuts and cinnamon. 😌
Just wanted to say I really appreciate your open attitude to some of the episodes generally not well regarded among fans of the show and just taking them on their own merits.
I LOVE that you include bits of the intro and theme, because it is such a huge part of getting ready for each episode (to some of us, at least!). Glad you seem to feel the same! Also, I can't believe people are so negative about both the 1st season AND Angel One. First season has so many important episodes; Datalore being one of them. And I guess people have grown to dismiss episodic shows, but I love when shows can have episodes that are not intrinsically tied to an overall soap opera tale. Plus, each episode still manages to layer on more detail about the characters and the universe and how things work. So glad you seem to be enjoying the show (and Wesley) like many of us fans that may not be as vocal as some others.
24:17 "Is _chest_ is harrier than I would've thought." In the _TNG_ novel _Imzadi,_ we look in on Riker's brief assignment to Betazed, when he was a lieutenant. He went to a Betazoid wedding where he discovered that it's the cultural norm for all the assembled guests to be nude. He discovered this when the wedding began and all the guests proceeded to disrobe. Now, of course, he was caught off guard, but he didn't really have anything to be bashful about. So he stepped out of the room for a moment, and came back as nude as everyone else and sat right back down. Then a guest, on her way to her chair, paused to consider him and said, "You human men are certainly hairy. Why is that?" Without missing a beat, Riker replied, "Traction."

Meanwhile the other children, just let stuff dangle from their faces until a teacher or adult wiped their faces. Hence the expressions, "snot-nozed kid" or "snotty brats"! 😁
Fun fact about the blinking tubes ("dual generators") at 3:15, they're one of the most used props in sci-fi. They've been in about 10 episodes across different Star Trek shows and two of the original series movies. And because they weren't made by the crew but rather rented from a prop shop, they've been used in other movies as well.
For decades now my friends and I race to be the first to spot and point out "The thingy! They are using the device!" when we watch a movie or television show as a group.
0:07 Mark! "Night Court"! It was an "NBC" sitcom that eventually hadva follow-up with Harry's daughter taking his judge position. She was played by actress Melissa Rauch who was "Bernadette" in "The Big Bang Theory". Her natural voice stunned those who weren't aware that her "Bernadette" voice wasn't her own! But anyway, the series is a "WB" series, so Judge Harry got to deal with "Coyote versus Road Runner" and they appeared in animated form! Someone below mentioned Brent Spiner as the hillbilly! His being a guest is ironic because Judge Harry also had to deal with the case of "Trekker versus Trekkie"! The former, instead of being a girl that grocked Spock, as originally defined by Gene Roddenberry himself, reminds me of "Harold Green" from "The Red Green Show"! The latter was dressed like "Geordie LaForge" because he was Black. Eventually he refused to recognize the jurisdiction of the court, tapped his combadge, and had himself beamed out of there! Everyone was stunned! But the nerdy guy asked if the cool guy could do the 🖖 salute! 😅 William Shatner, cameoed as himself, not as "Kirk" as so many believe, in an episode of "Mork & Mindy", a "Paramount" series that was on "ABC". His transporter beam and Mearth's got switched! So Bill arrived at Mearth's home and was greeted by his titular parents who were shocked! Mearth, ended up at an adults only hot tub party, and he was shocked! Then there's the sitcom "Cybil". Frakes in reality is married to actress Genie Francis. But he was flirting a lot with Cybil! He gets rejected by her and the other ladies. Then surprise! He seemingly transforms into "Riker" and requests to be beamed back because his mission failed! As for "spoilers" you probably won't be seeing those series. 🤷♂️
Now you know where "Shut up Wesley!" comes from. Because, that is a legitimate meme on the internet. These are two more episodes that I owned on VHS when I was a kid and I watched them pretty regularly.

35:06 "I just want to hang out and watch Star Trek" - so did we, back in the day. Even a weaker episode is still an opportunity to hang out with our fictional friends! And watching these reactions, we get to hang out both with them and with you, so it's a double win!
Regarding the Captain not beaming down on away missions, this is something David Gerrold (writer of the original series' "The Trouble with Tribbles") was bringing up at least as far back as the '70s. He felt it makes little sense for the Captain to be constantly putting himself in potential danger. Gerrold worked on The Next Generation early on and it was decided to essentially split Kirk into two characters, Picard and Riker.
Just an FYI in case you haven't heard about it yet... Riker has a habit of standing and leaning with his leg up against furniture and equipment. We just saw him do it a couple of times while down on Angel One. He normally does it on the bridge against Data's consol. It's called the Riker Maneuver by the cast and fans. Thought you might like to know so you can notice it in future episodes.
Jen, loved the moment when you saw that Lore could not comprehend Picard's "Make it so" command. I had a somewhat similar reaction when I saw this episode for the first time. Your "Angel One" reaction was fun. Don't worry about getting hate from these twisted Trekkies, you enjoy it as much as you want.
That prop, with the two horizontal pipes in, is one that appears many times in Sci-fi shows of the 1980s but it was just set-dressing and what it actually does is not described in any of them. They made fun of this in 'Airplane II: The Sequel'. Contractions are so common, no-one notices when Brent Spiner accidentally uses them. They usually only point it out when it is important to the plot.
Just love reflecting back on this series through your channel. I hope you stick it out. So many great episodes and seasons. Trying to think what my top 5 episodes are, is hard to do, but I think my two favorite ones are: "Who Watches the Watchers" Season 3, Episode 4 - A primitive culture is being observed by the Federation to study their progression in comparison to our own Earth. The secret room in the mountainside gets reviled and the people soon learn of the advanced culture observing them. They believe Picard is a God. "The Inner Light" Season 5, Episode 25 - Probably my favorite. The Enterprise comes across a probe of unknown origin. Picard is struck with a beam from the probe and becomes unconscious. While only minutes pass for the crew, Picard experiences 40 years of a lifetime as a member of an old civilization that no longer exists.
20:00 It makes a lot more sense for another officer to lead away teams and lhave the captain stay aboard the ship. If the captain is required on an away mission usually the first offiver would stay aboard. As Spock was sciemce officer, as well as first officer, he would usually go as well, command of the ship went down the ranks quite a long way if Scotty was also in a landing party. Kirk used to have a new girl in most of the episodes of the original series. In this Picard has one or two love interests over time, but Riker is the playboy, although there are many episodes without a romantic plot.
In the second episode you watched, episode 14, there was a great scene of the operational functions of the bridge. When Picard left sick, and they shifted everybody into their place. It's a direct illustration that they try to portray actual operations and chain of command. But not all the time. After all Captain Picard goes down to the surface sometimes...
I love that my weekend includes watching your Next Jen reactions in addition to playing tabletop roleplaying games and reading comics. You're part of my ultimate nerd lifestyle now♥️🖖.
I once read that a defining trait of every compelling protagonist is traumatic experiences in their backstory that they have had to overcome. I then asked myself what traumatic experiences in their backstory each member of the _TNG_ cast has had to overcome. Picard was previously CO of the _Stargazer,_ a ship he had to abandon after it was crippled in a sneak attack from a Ferengi vessel. Riker's mother passed away when he was two and the resulting emotional toll put a strain on his relationship with his father. Data and his brother, Lore, were the only survivors of an entire colony that was wiped out in a surprise attack by the Crystalline Entity. Worf was the only survivor of a Klingon colony after it was devastated in a sneak attack from the Romulans. He was subsequently raised by humans. Dr. Crusher's husband, and Wesley Crusher's father, Jack, died on an away mission that Picard lead. Geordi has grown up blind. Yar was the only member of the crew we have _ever_ heard of to escape a failed Federation colony when she was five. Troi's father passed away when she was seven. Guinan's home world was wiped out by extraterrestrial invasion. This is what makes these heroes compelling. It's not the way they wield strength. It's the way they cope with loss.
I liked Angel One. Maybe also because Patricia McPherson who played Ariel also played Bonnie on the TV show Knight Rider for 3 seasons. I always liked her. As far as people disliking this episode, most likely it was men who watched the episode and didn't like the fact of how men had historically treated women until the last 30 years was being mirrored back at them through a world where the females were dominate over the males and were bigger and stronger in stature to the men.
Hi Jen... interesting that you say at 3:00 it reminds you of Alien when thye find the Zenomorph.. the music is from, or based on the tune from Alien.... :) Davey P.
Back in the day, if one of my friends mentioned needing to sneeze, someone would ask 'A Klingon sneeze?' Maybe that is not very funny, but we found the in-joke hilarious and bonding.
The contraption/prop at 3:08 was also used in the TV movie "The Incredible Hulk Returns". I tried to post a link to another UA-cam video showing it, but my comment gets deleted.
Brent Spiner, 'Data', is probably the most versatile actor of the cast, or at least on the show. Without any spoilers, he does play Data-type characters in a number of different ways. On Angel 1, I was surprised that the women didn't try to recruit Yar and Troi to stay there since they are so beautiful and smart. Another great TNG reaction. Keep it up, and to let you know, the best is yet to come.
I am with you 100%! The episode may not be the best, and as I have said to others, a "bad" episode of TNG for me are at a similar level to the "better" episodes of other series, including some series within the Star Trek universe. I will take a bad Next Generation episode over the vast majority of episodes in ST Discovery series without question. There's probably less than a handful of Discovery episodes I would ever watch again but TNG can live rent free in my head or TV everyday. What I appreciate about all of TNG (TOS to a lesser degree) is how their episodes almost always delve critically into morality/ethics, fidelity (to the other, group, or one's self), exploration vs isolation, fatalism/determinism vs. free will, and especially the trifecta of existentialism, absurdism, and nihilism. Few other shows really do as well of a job in their exploration of such a wide range of philosophies than TNG. I know the Dr. Who community might argue this point but I would argue the fit and finish of things like Dr. Who and to a degree Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy feels more cold like an academic hypothesis in dramatic form while Star Trek, especially TNG, feels warmly grounded to the human experience even though it's viewed through more of a futuristic utopians lens. It's that lens I feel which allows greater audience acceptance because it offers a feeling of taking on difficult subjects in relative emotional comfort. This is not to say that episodes can't have enough dramatic tension keeping people on the edge of their seats or feel significant loss with a departing character, rather I don't often hear people saying an episode felt so real as to it triggering an anxiety attack. I almost had an anxiety attack watching Oppenheimer and Dunkirk and I don't even have any anxiety related issues, but parts of them felt so real I began to feel very overwhelmed; this is something I have also heard from many others about those movies. #christophernolanmoviesareamazing TNG is an amazing series and kudos to you for wanting to explore that with us. You're so awesome!
Enjoying these so much. And I humbly submit you can safely ignore anyone that gives you hate for enjoying a TV show - keep right on enjoying what you enjoy is my thinking, it actually makes me look at the early episodes (some of which I haven't rewatched for 25 or 30 years) in a new light.
About theme song- as much as I love the theme song to TNG, my absolute favourite is the theme to the Star Trek film First Contact. Its so beautiful and I find it so moving.

I think Jen has reached the point where any Trek can be a good thing in the end. That's a great way to approach the many shows/movies.
18:00 Mark! "Stinker"?! That's news to me! Stupid lists! 😁
If you want to see Brent Spiner before Star Trek, check out his guest appearances as the head of the hillbilly family on the old Night Court.
Jen, you are adorable; the perfect nerd bird with the cutest smile and an infectious laugh. It's so much fun to watch Star Trek with you. 🥰🥰🤭😘 xxxx
*BEYOND THE BLUE HORIZON*
Hey Miss Jen, First of all You are my Favorite Movie Reactionary!😍You are my "Star Woman." 🤗 🤩👈
After having a horrible weekend, I really needed some escapism to get my mind off my troubles. Thanks for another enjoyable Star Trek.
Great stuff Jen. I love all the goofy stuff - glad you're enjoying the full experience
I always keep forgetting how funky the things that they encounter in the early seasons are.
Dear Jen, I'm so happy you're doing this ST TNG reactions. This was the series of my cildhood. 🤗
Star trek Sunday's, A Highlight of the week \😄/🎉
Jen, loved the moment when you saw that Lore could not comprehend Picard's "Make it so" command. I had a somewhat similar reaction when I saw this episode for the first time.
Your "Angel One" reaction was fun. Don't worry about getting hate from these twisted Trekkies, you enjoy it as much as you want.
We need to make a video of the best of Jen's reactions to the Star Trek TMP/TNG theme.
Great Jen as Per.... love your reactions.... You really need to watch them all and make up your own mind.. as you are doing... :)
Trying to think what my top 5 episodes are, is hard to do, but I think my two favorite ones are:
"Who Watches the Watchers" Season 3, Episode 4 - A primitive culture is being observed by the Federation to study their progression in comparison to our own Earth.
While only minutes pass for the crew, Picard experiences 40 years of a lifetime as a member of an old civilization that no longer exists.
i connected with Data when he made a poem about his cat called Spot. 🥰
This is the beginning of the Brent Spiner masterclass of playing multiple characters.
I love that you're enjoying even the "bad" episodes :) this is working out better than I had hoped :)
Next Jen is the best!!! See ya tomorrow at 11, Jen!
Anybody else giggle the first time she said "Data lore"?
3:09 Trivia Game : Identify all the other shows these props were used in.
“Are they gonna learn “all night long!” 😂🤣😆
Star Trek is addictive for real!
Oh it's the girl from Knight Rider
Until I did a TNG rewatch I forgot how many roles Brent Spiner played - and it's not just TNG, there's a whole Brenterverse out there!!!
It's always a joy to curl up on the sofa and enjoy Star Trek with Canada's sweetheart. 🥰🤭 xxx
Star Trek Sunday is quickly becoming my favourite day of the week
❤ just Jen and I hanging out watching STTNG.. It's what Sundays are made for ❤
Datalore is one of my favorite episodes. It is also my nickname on steam for many years.
23:58 “What do you think?”
I think if you put on a pair of roller skates you could be in the movie Xanadu.
"Angel One" we learned one solid piece of characterization: Riker is a horndog.
Hi Jen... interesting that you say at 3:00 it reminds you of Alien when thye find the Zenomorph.. the music is from, or based on the tune from Alien.... :) Davey P.
34:34 Exactly. This one is what I call a throw away episode. Like you said, you could lift it from the playlist without missing anything.
"You're free to execute your laws." Phrasing, dude!
I agree, Jen, keeping the sneeze was a clever choice. Already looking forward to next Next Jen!
I liked the episode where Data and Tasha get it on in her bedroom. “ He is fully functional”.
Wasnt Datalore the episode where Brent Spinner said "I'm Fine." It was a blooper done on purpose. It could have been a different episode though
It's been a long time since I've seen the episode, but I think you are correct. That intentional "blooper" did happen in "Datalore".
"Picard's not good with kids." So true.
Brent Spiner used to play a recurring role on Night Court as a hillbilly. You would have no idea it was the same person
