Hi Jen, every time I see a new Star Trek reaction from you I smile. I'm loving how much fun you're having. Looking at the thumbnail for this video (which I'm anxiously awaiting) I wanted to give you some trivia: Jonathan Frakes (Cmdr. Riker) really does play the Trombone. I thought you'd appreciate knowing that
If you wanna just immerse yourself in the geekiness, Star Trek Online is still going, and is fairly old so its hardware requirements are trivial these days, and it even has a fair number of cast from various eras of the franchise providing voice in sections
The holodeck was a genius invention by the writers. It allows them to tell _any_ story while nominally always still being a "sci-fi" show on a "spaceship".
Fun fact, the actor who played Karnas, was in the TOS episode “The Trouble With Tribbles”, he was the Klingon who was insulted the captain, but his insult of the ship caused Scotty to throw the first punch.
You are talking about the station commander in the Bynars episode ”110100100”, I was talking about the guy who took the hostages because he wanted revenge in “Too Short A Season”
@aaronhusk Yeah, I ended up figuring out after I posted my comment I was confusing 2 actors. I really didn't expect more than 1 actor was reused in such a short space of episodes. I stand corrected.
He has done a number of roles in between appearing as a Klingon in TOS to Karnas in TNG. The two most memorable roles was first as Count Malachi in “Fonzie Loves Pinky”; a three-part episode of Happy Days (1974-84), and had just appeared as Koloff; the adviser to Ivan Drago in Rocky IV (1985).
“Lol” Riker in the holo-deck during work hours engaging in spicy activity… now that’s some old school TNG that long time fans tend to take for granted. So much fun to watch you watching it. And despite my personal hx with Weasley Crusheer I have to say it’s refreshing to see someone giving Will Wheaton a fair shake for his acting through lines he didn’t write. Good on you for giving Wes a fresh fan. Doesn’t change how I feel about the character but I do appreciate seeing a new perspective that I haven’t considered. 🖖
There are many upcoming episodes that explore the depths of these characters. There are some Picard episodes that make me tear up every time. The characters end up being much deeper than they are in the first couple seasons. I'm excited for you to watch the later seasons.
If you are feeling down just watch Jen enjoying Star Trek & you will feel at least a little better. ☺️ Especially when she's grooving to the music, drinking in beardless Riker, or slaying in her uniform! On an unrelated topic, Minuet is hot! 🖖 Edit: Someone *has* to serenade Jen with a trombone now, preferably dressed as Riker. 🤗
I could've serenaded her 30 years ago. I played trombone in marching/concert band and we actually played the theme to TNG for our half-time show one year.
''These Holodecks are trouble, I don't think it's a good idea to have one''. Don't worry Captain Murray, the Holodecks run perfectly normal for the rest of the series. Nothing goes wrong ever again.👀
I remember reading somewhere, that "Too Short a Season" was originally conceived as a sequel to the TOS episode "A Private Little War" where Kirk faced a similar issue of a species receiving arms from aliens. It would've been a vehicle to have Shatner come back as Kirk. I don't have any citation or anything, but with the details adjusted it would make sense.
Hey Jen, Fun Fact: Jonathan Frakes plays trombone on a song from the band Phish. The album is called "Hoist", and the song he plays on is called "Riker's Mailbox". Apparently Jonathan lived next door to the producer of Phish's album, and he had a strange mailbox...hence the title. The band members were fans of TNG and asked him to come over and play.
07:17 to 10:55 JEN'S CONCERNED JEN'S WORRIED JEN'S CONFUSED JEN : we're abandoning ship ? ! 07:51 JEN : WHAT THE FRIG ? ! JEN'S FUNNY JEN'S obvious JEN : I DON'T TRUST HER 10:03 JEN HUMS JEN SINGS 10:33 JEN : UH , GUYS , OH MY GOD !
All my favorite episodes are relating to time travel or time lapses like ep 07: “Where No One Has Gone Before”, “11001001”, “The Royale”, “Yesterday’s Enterprise”, “Future Imperfect”, and MANY more. ST:Nis my all time favorite season in Star Trek.❤
"11001001" always was one of my favorite all-time TNG episodes. In my view it stands with the best stuff the show ever produced. The Enterprise of the early Trek shows doesn't really explore the galaxy as much as it explores the human psyche, and that's what's going on in this episode. Also, the Bynars were a really cool, cute race which was criminally underused for nearly all of the rest of Trekdom. While I do enjoy the high-octane action shows we get these days, I would like to see a bit of a turning back to the more philosophical profile that TNG had. Of course, that requires some very sharp writing and direction skills to pull off successfully, nowadays it's much easier to fill out any weaknesses of the plot with special effects phaser battles... Le sigh. One can at least hope, eh?
This UA-cam channel is a breath of fresh air and I highly recommend it. Jenn is such a treat to watch her reactions especially science fiction like Star Trek. Her genuine reactions make viewing enjoyable and highly entertaining, she is very beautiful and highly intelligent, a real charm.
Massive thankyou to all who attended the premiere and made it another fun time for all and Ty for being kind and respectful in the comments it's appreciated more than you know 🙌
As always, you're delightful in these reactions. And I'm glad you've started saying "a beautiful woman is usually trouble" instead of "the Sexy Lady is always shady." 😆 I did, indeed, anticipate that you would love Riker playing in a jazz club; I don't think it's a spoiler to say that his trombone will appear again someday. 😉 Carolyn McCormick, the actress who plays Minuet, later had a recurring role on "Law & Order" as Dr. Elizabeth Olivet, the psychiatrist employed by the D. A.'s office to evaluate suspects and defendants. She played that role very well, but I have to admit that, whenever she began to speak, I always expected her to say, "My name is Minuet and I love all jazz."
I keep forgetting the first couple of TNG seasons were from before Law and Order premiered. Early L&O’s “gritty” look makes it feel like it’s a full decade older than TNG.
I must admit, i have seen many of your reactions and I'm always impressed, but this is the first time I have seen you a Star Trek reaction and I was caught off guard. You, with your hair back and in a Star Fleet uniform look great. I wish I was 50 years younger.
With ST TNG, like any other show, we take the better with the lesser episodes. - I think learning that Jonathan Frakes is a jazz music fan who actually plays trombone has increased Jen's crush factor on him by a significant amount. - I also think there was a good acting performance from Clayton Rohner (Adm. Mark Jameson) as he confronted Karnas while dying - finally convincing Karnas that he was Jameson.
The cameo’s are to explore thoughts that will have death or tragic outcomes scenes and they don’t want to inflict negative effects on the main characters even though they do have losses in different ways and reasons. So that’s why they use a throwaway character so the viewer doesn’t have to loss someone they are connected with.
Great reaction Jen, as with a lot of early episodes, various story elements get referenced in future episodes, Ep15 is no exception. Its no spoiler to say you can expect a lot more 'bone!
Hey Jen. I am so loving your treck nerd. I grew up with this show. Actually full disclosure I grew up with the original and reruns. But next gen was in my 20s wheelhouse. It's so much fun to watch you watch the show. It just gets better and better. Season 3 4 and 5 are amazing. And then you'll get into the Borg Arc of the series and then it just goes off the charts good. This is going to be a fun ride love you Jen ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦
I’d totally wear a Riker playing trombone shirt 🤣 and honestly, the second episode would probably make a good movie plot. Where you could get invested in a character. A little much for an episode.
Not only was I a trombone player for 6 years from Jr. to senior high, but our marching band played a whole show of Star Trek music, including the theme to TNG! I think Jen would've possibly dated me back then, maybe? Oh, I was good looking too - 30 years ago. 😂
I'm amazed sometimes that this show wasn't cancelled during seasons 1 & 2. Glad it wasn't. Some great episodes later on. Some of the best TV, ever. Love the uniform Jen!
when TNG was shown for the first time, it took me two full seasons to settle in and like it. on DSN it took me only one season to to settle in and like it. and for VOY, it was immediate to settle in, but overall i still didn't like most of it, with all the long travel and consequentially lots of logical problems (eg meeting the same races again and again) or other "start trek atypical" behavior (eg a loose interpretation of the prime directive). it reminded me of the long travel and jumps in "space 1999".
I have to say, I know the image quality has been remastered, but those old space dock scenes and filming models still hold up today. I remember watching 11001001 as a kid and was enthralled by the idea of the ship being stolen. The stakes seemed so high! As a minor plot hole, Picard visting the holodeck was as Minuet said "Happenstance". If this is true, how would Riker alone download the information to reboot the Binars homeworld? You need to work in pairs afterall ;) Still...entertaining episode, and reaction! Also, the bun makes me think of early Captain Janeway.
5:15 "Are they gonna _trap_ him in there? I'm... I don't trust these guys." Well, I mean, it's a jazz bar. The main preoccupation, there, is playing jazz. There are _far_ worse places to end up trapped.
I'm a little late to the party but Happy Star Trek Sunday Jen!! And I've been noticing more women like you are liking beardless guys inspite of the beard and mustache trends. Making me think of going beardless too. 😎🖖
Minuet's actress was played by one of the shrinks on the Law-and-Order series of shows Surprise the heck of me and as you know from below the bad guy played a Klingon on the Tribbles show in the original series. This must have a cameo show for the series. Minuet makes a sort of come back later on too.
The seedy side of holodecks is investigated a bit more at Quarks bar in Deep Space Nine but since this is network tv, they keep it a lot more tame than it would be in reality.
I love how Jen nerds out and wears outfits for the things she watches. 16:22. That guy there was in Rocky IV. He was Ivan Drago's manager/trainer or whatever.
Great reaction Ensign Jen !❤ You are doing a good job at reacting to these episodes! Some are gems and some are stones but this is all part of the joy of watching for the first time! Im enjoying the rewatch and i am glad to be a part of your journey in the ST-TNG experience!❤ Looking forward to more ST Sundays! 🖖 Luv the hair up look as per star fleet regulation.😁 Luv ya Jen ❤️💛🖖
Try to remember that most tv from the 90s were designed for syndication, so having one-off episodes that were self-contained was the way to go. So not every episode is going to have lasting or significant character development. That being said, something from 11001001 does receive a call-back in a future episode, so keep an eye out!
Between season 1 and 2 Jonathan Frakes was in a production of 'Hamlet' for which he grew his beard. He was going to shave it off again, but the show-runners liked it, thinking it looked 'nautical' (Star Fleet does use navy ranks). When shown in the UK there was no break between the two seasons so some believed the beard was false. If there was not problem there would be no plot to the episode. If an actor has a skill (such as playing an instrument) they will often try and use it in a show.
Your crush on Riker always makes me smile. Riker is my favorite character on the show. Jonathan Frakes is one of the sweetest guys on the planet, even today. I met him a few years ago and he's exactly what you'd expect.
21:08 Mark! I had to sleep, but now I'm back to finish viewing! Ahem. Did she say "tape"? If so, well, could it be because of her age? Was she around in Kirk's time when they supposedly were still using cassette tapes of kind, albeit the props didn't look like metal or plastic, but like painted, wooden, rectangular, chips? 🤔 Hmm. So, even in the late 1980s, despite their imaginations, they didn't anticipate the technological, Digital Revolution? 🤔
30:08 I have always loved that conversation... Mark: Annie with the golden hair. Annie: Flatterer. It's gray now. Mark: I see only the gold. THAT'S true love.
Hi, Jen, chat follow up: As we chatted a few Next Jens ago, you inspired me to read Holmes. I'm now on the third book (short stories), and there's a story "A Scandal in Bohemia," where Holmes & Watson breakfast on toast and coffee. Guess who that reminded me of?!?
Great stuff as always Jen. In "where do I know that guy from?" news, I had to look it up but omg the guy holding the hostages in that last ep. was Drago's manager from Rocky IV !!
Jonathan Frakes actually has played teombone since he was a child. The producers had a session musician overdubb his playing in their episode but you can actually hear him play in a few later ones. The tang cast is actually very musically Talented.. Patrick Stewart, besides Frames playing the trombone, Michael dorn who plays word plays bass gutiar and Patrick stewart can play the recorder. Brent Soiner who plays data is a singer who has released a few albums singing standards and show ttunes. Additionally on severa ill of them albums Patrick Stew art, Lever Burton, Michelle Corn and Jonathan Frames provide backing vocals. Gates McfadyEN WHO OKAYS Doctor crushed was a professional dancer on broadway before moving to tv and fikms
That wisecrack about Worf finally developing a sense of humor is particularly ironic, since, to my recollection, Micheal Dorn was one of the funniest people in the cast.
It's nice to see you singing along to Ron Jones' beautiful score to "11001001." It's a favorite episode of mine, and one of the gems of the otherwise clunky Season 1, alongside of "The Battle." It's one of the rare episodes that uses the then-ensemble fully and well. Picard and Riker shine having an action adventure together to fight the clock. Data and Geordi get a moment together and true exploration of humanity (duty v. leisure.) Dr. Crusher opens up just a bit, even Tasha Yar has a moment with Worf. Not enough Season 1 episodes used the full ensemble-I think nine actors was a little much. (Side note: This was one of four episodes in Season 1 where Marina Sirtis did not appear as Counselor Troi.) Carolyn McCormick really shines as Minuet. She had just starred in Spenser For Hire as Rita Fiori in the '86-'87 TV season and would go on to play Dr. Elizabeth Olivet in Law and Order. Thanks for sharing.
Karnas: I see time has not been kind to you Jameson! Jen: You’re. Ugly. 😂🤣. I must’ve replayed that section ten times and laughed out loud every time. Love it. ❤😊
Holodecks aren't transporters or dimensional portals. You can't enter one and leave another unless someone uses a real transporter to beam you to the second holodeck. Holodecks are just extremely advanced virtual reality systems. When you're in one, you're still physically just in the room. When it creates a projection of some other location that is bigger than the physical room, like a canyon or something, you can walk the entire canyon because the holodeck moves the projection when you walk so that you stay in place relative to the real holodeck walls. In other words, it works kind of like a treadmill: the entire projection, including the ground beneath your feet, moves so that you don't.
You know, Jen, when you're all finished with Star Trek TNG, I'm going to miss you singing along with the theme song. And you look very 24th century in your uniform! 😍
The Enterprise D is 2,108 ft long. That's roughly 0.4 miles or 0.6 km. Imagine how big that space station had to be for the a Enterprise to easily fly inside.

The holodeck was a genius invention by the writers. It allows them to tell _any_ story while nominally always still being a "sci-fi" show on a "spaceship".
New character comes onboard,
Jen: "I'm suspicious"
Jen would make a good captain
Fun fact, the actor who played Karnas, was in the TOS episode “The Trouble With Tribbles”, he was the Klingon who was insulted the captain, but his insult of the ship caused Scotty to throw the first punch.
He was also Ben Childress, the miner who first rejected one of "Mudd's Women".

There’s an episode of The Orville where a crew member literally falls in love with a virtual woman from their version of the holodeck.
Your joy in the opening music brings me such happiness! And love how much the music speaks to you.
11001001 is Jonathan Frakes' favorite Season 1 episode. The title also translates to the number 201 in the Base-10 math that we Humans typically use.
I thought of a new game ... take a shot every time Jen says "Kiss", "Making-Out", or coupling-up reference ...

Keep watching new episodes it gets better each season.
Hmm. So, even in the late 1980s, despite their imaginations, they didn't anticipate the technological, Digital Revolution? 🤔
I love the change when the ship come into dock and Picard immediately is off the clock. He goes from stern dad to proud dad.
30:08 I have always loved that conversation...
Mark: Annie with the golden hair.
Annie: Flatterer. It's gray now.
Mark: I see only the gold.
THAT'S true love.
9:30 Truer words were never spoken 🤣
the jen-trek bun is back, i love it !
I had completely forgotten this episode even existed. I probably must have seen it at least once or twice, but it left absolutely no memories with me.
Season one was okay but I can’t wait for you to get a couple seasons in. It’s a truly excellent series.
Congrats, captain Murray, you nailed the first one dead on-- except for one element:Quinteros. He seemed to be impeding their trying to stop the bynars.
Love Riker playing trombone. Makes me happy. ❤
Let's do the math: Jen + Trek = Joy + Music + Wit + Passion + Brains + Heart = FUN!
the main thing I remember about Season 1 is that most episodes start with them in spacedock getting repaired.
I love that you watch (well, ok- post) these on Sundays. TNG aired on Sunday nights and we always compared notes at school on Mondays.
The 'Dame' in the red dress in the holodeck looks so much like Captain Janeway (see Voyager) but isn't
Carolyn McCormick played Dr. Olivet on Law and Order.
Just to say you have the chillest post-episode music!
Look forward to Star Trek Sundays every week!
That wisecrack about Worf finally developing a sense of humor is particularly ironic, since, to my recollection, Micheal Dorn was one of the funniest people in the cast.
Even though the Hokodeck seems to be the most problematic feature of the ship, IMO it is responsible for some of the best episodes in the series.
Like when Data was Sherlock Holmes. :)
@@pamosborn1956 SHUSH! Spoilers. 😱I'm sure they will be some of Jen's favorites.
Oh for the comfort and utility of a Parrises squares uniform!
"now buzz off!" Ha! One of the greatest reaction quotes ever! I love it!
Karnas: I see time has not been kind to you Jameson!
Jen: You’re. Ugly.
😂🤣. I must’ve replayed that section ten times and laughed out loud every time. Love it. ❤😊
Love the hair up. Great reaction. 🖖❤🖖❤
You are the perfect nerd bird. 🥰 It is so much fun to rediscover Star Trek with you. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Yes, holodecks would have to be cleaned, regularly.
love the Troi hair.
11001001 was the 1st episode of TNG I watched beginning to end back in the day, so it's one from the 1st season I still like to watch again..
Miss Jen, I don't know if there are awards for Best YT Reactor...but you get my vote! ✅ Always authentic and fun!
Thank you!
