I am a luxury enthusiast and have been purchasing luxury for a while now. I have 15 bags that I love, along with luxury shoes, jewelry, and accessories. Which means that I have done my fair share of shopping. Coincidentally, in the beginning of the year, I read an article about "creating more and consuming less" and that hit me hard. So, I decided to write the book I always want to write. I am about half way through, and my goal is to finish by summer. As a result, I have spent far less time shopping and I feel better about how I am spending my time. The decrease in shopping has also made me realize that I have more than enough. I used to have a giant wishlist, but I have reduced that number to 5. So, in 2021, I will buy up to 5 items. Great video!!

In 2020 I was on a very low buy year. Then I was in shock to see how much I actually saved last year. Since then I’m haven’t had any desire to shop. The dopamine I used to get from buying now I get from seeing my savings grow. I haven’t had to fight myself like before.

Me too, from May 2020 until now I’ve saved over a third of my income, & that’s in spite of purchasing 2 new bags, buying my mother some fine jewellery & getting some major work done to my car. I’m having so much fun watching my savings grow that I’ve started selling off part of my collection. Of course there will probably be a fun purchase or two along the way, but I’m now really looking forward to paying cash for my next dream car (which is reasonably modest) whenever my old one needs to retire. Then I can put the interest I would have paid on finance into something useful, like investments...

I realized I'm only wearing 1/3 of my current wardrobe but are still buying more. I definitely buy out of boredom. When my child is doing her activities I'm in the shops for those hours in the afternoon just buying stuff I most likely will not wear. I'm over it now that I have no wear to put the stuff I'm getting. I feel overwhelmed buy the amount of stuff I have and don't even wear it. Waste of money and space in my closet.

For me, i now feel sick at the thought of the amount of money a bag cost, $6000 could feed someone for a year or 2... having a few bags are fine to pamper yourself but buying a few a year... i can’t seem to do it anymore. I’m also very picky so there isn’t many bags i like. And I stop myself from going into the stores because i have a terrible habit of buying impulsively. Strangely, watching videos of youtubers, buying chanel bag every month make me want to buy less...

I recently read that people who own 100 Prada bags think they’re not hoarders because the bags are expensive. In actuality they are hoarders. Whether it’s books or bags or animals it still usually requires a mental health expert.
I used to collect porcelain dolls and Lladros , Royal Doulton and pottery. One day I made up my mind to let go and my daughter sold it and I let her keep the money. Please everyone...don’t get caught up in the hype. These things will not bring happiness. If it does it’s short lived. Listen to Eileen!

I really enjoy your videos, Eileen! I totally agree that shopping out of boredom is such a common habit and I've been trying to be more and more mindful about the things I buy. It's almost been a challenge in an of itself to actually spend more on some things that I REALLY WANT instead of multiples of something that looks like it's a 'savings' or on sale. Less is definitely more if you love what you have.

I downsized a lot over the years and still am, including getting rid of most of my expensive/designer handbags & wallets and shopping much much less. It feels truly wonderful to desire less and have more money for savings and investments. As a result, I have no mortgage (my house is worth around $550k), zero debt and bought my (used) car with cash. This to me feels a lot richer than having a bunch of expensive things.

My motivation for shopping less is financial independence. I want to pay off my student debt and make enough investments so that I can leave my job if I want to. The freedom to do what you want, without needing to worry about the financial ramifications for you and your family, is the ultimate luxury. It has made me not even want to buy more bags at the moment, although I still enjoy living vicariously through UA-camrs!

I used to always buy on impulse or stress but thankfully I’ve manage to get rid of that bad habits. These days I’ll think hard and long and sit on it to evaluate if I really absolutely want it before I take the plunge. Yes I know sometimes I might miss out on certain items especially Chanel but I would rather pay a bit more to a personal shopper to get it for me rather than buy in a FOMO headspace. I’m also curbing on buying clothes as I’ve too many too much especially when they are on sale, it’s super hard to control. But all in all, I’m practicing self restraint and hope we all can succeed in a low buy, less clutter year :)

@@ColourfulNoir indeed, and I’m very proud of my gradual increase of self restraint. You know I was seeing so many unboxing and raving of YSL mini Lou / Toy Lou Lou as a good ‘substitute’ for Chanel / LV etc. I do agree totally that it’s worth every penny. I was very tempted to buy, but I’m looking at Loewe puzzle bag too. To me, they are both very similar size and shape so I told myself I can only have 1. It was a struggle but eventually I feel so good because I respected both my money and bag :)

Another great video! Thanks for finding such interesting topics and presenting them eloquently. If it's not a HELL yes, it's a no! Yes!! I've been saying it for ages!! And if you need to take a picture, ask a friend, partner or parent for opinion - then the item is NOT for you. You need to look at it, look at yourself in the mirror and be like, hell yes, wow, yes, oh my god! This way, even if in a couple of years the item doesn't work for you anymore, you won't be sorry that you bought me and it'll be easier to pass it on to someone else because you loved it so much and its was such a lovely part of your life😃

I grew up in a room that was full of things. All sorts of things ranging from expired lipsticks to random plastic containers to even an old, spoilt clock from probably 10years ago. Since then, I have moved several times and each time I did was a headache because of the things I mindlessly bought and accumulated through the years. Recently I started to wonder.. where did all the money go? Looking at my peers all thriving and having a substantial amount of savings, I started to reflect and it hit me hard. I really need to cut down on the buying and consuming. At the same time, I came across minimalism, living simply and how practicing it can help me to focus on the things that matter! Hence my motivation to start a Low buy year this year. Love your videos Eileen! Your words constantly remind me that less is more. Thank you!

The last few years I have felt very overwhelmed by the clutter in my home. I have decided to start decluttering my home and try to be much more minimalistic. I think it will help me in many ways but most importantly will lessen my anxiety. I’ve only started buying luxury in the last 4-5 years so I don’t have a big collection. I still love luxury items but will be very intentional with my purchases as I have been recently with everything I bring into my home. I’ve definitely turned a corner in my mindset and I love how it feels. I feel very satisfied with what I have and only plan to buy things as they need to be replaced. As it’s my birthday month my husband will buy me a pair of shoes or a bag but that will be it for the year and I will be very happy with that decision. As I’ve said before, being content with what you have is an amazing feeling.😊💖🙏

I intend to have a low-buy year this year because (1) I went off the rails last year and (2) I want to know how much I can actually save if I focus on what I do want to buy and not get distracted by anything else. My luxury spending steadily increased from 2018-2020 so I want to lower my total significantly this year. It's mid-March and I'm still at zero luxury purchases (yay).
I feel like it's something very achievable because my wants (or wishes) has decreased significantly. I am also more aware of how much I need to work to buy one item.

First of all, you look lovely today. I love that saying from the book you read about why do we work so hard just to pay for our things. I like your advice about doing activities we enjoy other than shopping. For me, those activities are reading books, exercising, and self care like making and eating more nutritious food than I did in the past. It was a tough change but I stopped going to the mall on weekends. I used to go to the mall every other Saturday. If I do go to the mall nowadays, it is just to stop by for a latte to treat myself and then I leave. I do not browse in any stores like I used to. If I do make any wishlist purchases in the future, I would prefer to go preloved. If I buy in store, I feel pressured to buy things I don’t need like perfume and twinkies etc. Buying online or preloved would take away that pressure. It is tough not to engage in retail therapy after a bad day at work I admit though. I do feel the temptation after a bad day at work. 💕

Eileen this was soooo inspiring & I just decided to add Goodbye Things to my audible account since I had a couple of extra credits. I’m in the process of gathering items to sell from my overall wardrobe collection.
I am considering selling my home within the next year due to many reasons so I need to pare down even more. My Dad used to call things “golden handcuffs” in the way you describe the acquisition/work cycle. I agree that the financial security and flexibility that comes with owning fewer things and keeping our money in long term investments for the big picture, is far more comforting than any handbag.
I just sold all of my extra luxury belts and bought an Hermès Collier de Chien reversible belt with a gold and a silver buckle on the 2nd hand market for a fraction of the retail cost. This will now be my only belt of its kind. This is what I’m trying to do with everything.
And I definitely agree with focusing on developing other parts of our life & development. This was a wonderful video so thank you for sharing so authentically.🙏

My son (though not a daughter with that shopping pleasure we get), has always been a very minimalist in material items. He prefers to live life traveling with his girlfriend and experiencing the joys of our very large and beautiful World.
They rent in lieu of purchasing a home. It's easier to move, and they are not responsible for the taxes, repairs and appliances etc that comes with owning a home vs renting. He's fortunate and works from home - his own business.
So I have been thinking of all the real joy this style of life has brought him.
While they don't have children,, they both enjoy meeting people all over, seeing majestic places and a simple life of a loaf of bread, some meats, cheese and wine in a park or on the steps of Rome, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Japan and many many more 💙

    hank you for this video!
I love luxury bags, but don’t want to own more than 7 or 8. It’ll ruin it for me because they will no longer be special. I choose classic designs that have been around for years and I’ll be able to use for years to come. I loved when you said “ If something brings you joy and value, it is worth paying for, but that is quite different from indulging in excessiveness on a regular basis”.
There are other things we can do instead of shopping, I love learning foreign languages. There are so many resources now right on your phone. It brings me more satisfaction to be able to understand a song in French than to buy things. Spend more time leaning something new will give you a joy that will last.

My why is : I want to put more money on a side for investment. But it is so hard because I recently down side almost all of my designer handbags ( because watching your channel I realized many of them I don’t enjoy using and not even touch for many years. And I left them there to collecting dust) because of the down size of handbags. I feel I don’t have enough handbags that I can enjoy. I have a quite big cash I got from selling my old bags. So now I tempted to buy more new bags that I like. Or putting money for investment. Recently I love dior medium bobby bag. I really enjoying using it. So I feel I need to buy a large size . But I’m hesitant because I wonder should I spend money for 2 bags that is almost the same. Only difference size and colors. I wish I have you to give me advice.

Due to the Covid -19, I hardly buy online. I don't like this routine: get, try on and send back. Before any purchase I ask myself if I need it and how often I would use it. And the last, I want to have something special, unique: for example, not an offered Birkin in the store but a SO Birkin or something of high end quality but not very recognisable. Shopping costs tons of hours in our lives. It is stressful, and stress produces cortisone. The last one is not healthy for our bodies.

Hi Eileen! I just started getting into luxury handbags last year and have bought 5 bags so far - Senreve mini maestra, Chanel classic flap medium, LV multi pochette, mini lady Dior and Saint Laurent Kate medium tassel. These are all my dream bags accumulated past a few years and I finally got all of them! Like you, I believe that less is more and I am pretty happy with my current small collection. However, I think that I will only reach purse peace when I have my dream Kelly 28 etoupe and Birkin 25 Sakura in my collection! My question to you is, knowing the Hermes game, it seems impossible not to buy some things that you don’t really need in order to be offered a bag. Can you share your Hermes experience and what did you do to be offered a bag? Thank you!

I won't say don't push yourself too hard. If you're not ready to let go yet, that's really quite OK. However, I might suggest to set a time line. If there's something you've been thinking to sell, maybe leave it for 12 months and see if you have a change of mind. If you still have the same sentiment after a year, maybe it's time to let go xx

But I feel bad about leaving them, it’s kind of overwhelming. Seems like I’d have them sitting there, but I know it’s stuck energy. :/ do you ever struggle with clothes like that? I wholeheartedly agree with mindful spending and resisting consumerism, however, you make it sound like you are somehow being forced to purchase luxury items. The very vast majority of all humans do not worry about this stuff at all because they have no other options lol. Furthermore, it's kind of weird to preach "don't buy, don't buy" with a Birkin, Kelly, and Chanel bags in your closet. You already have your holy grail bags and the amount you have spent on one Birkin or Kelly is likely still higher than what most people spend on luxury in a year anyways. This isn't to put you down, I clearly enjoy your videos since I am watching them, but at times it does feel like you are being condescending.

    • @ColourfulNoir
      @ColourfulNoir  3 роки тому

Hi Alissa, I'm sorry if I came across as condescending. As a child, I would even worry about asking for bus fee from my parents because resources were scarce. It might sound cliche, but I'm now very blessed to be able to splurge on myself in the ways I never thought I could. So in a way, you're right in saying this is more or less a 'first world problem topic'. However, this channel focuses mainly mindful designer shopping tips, so I do think the content is somewhat relevant.
I truly love beautiful pieces, and because of this passion, I used to struggle to balance my priorities. It's never my intention to preach 'don't buy, don't buy'. I think people should reward themselves, but do it very intentionally. If I could turn back time, I would still buy my Birkin, because I absolutely love it. On the other hand, I 100% would not buy many of the Chanel pieces I sort of liked but mainly bought because I was in a low mood. Going forward, I might even say yes to another Birkin if it's in the right colour and hardware, but I will not buy a Louis Vuitton just because its the last one in the country. If there's a word that could sum up my video, I guess it's 'intentionality'. 😉
