Omg... Your story about your husband driving you to the boutique sounds just like mine. Now in my late 40’s, I look back and realize how silly it was to have an obsession and own an object instead of enjoying a nice time together to celebrate important milestone occasions. We all live and learn. Thanks so much for giving me an opportunity to reflect back on past and silly mistakes.

Thank you for this video, I really needed to her this. I recently discovered that I was buying things to make me feel good, but once I received it, the chase was over and I was on the hunt for the next thing. I sold about 40 items that I did not use or reach for any more and it felt great. I also did not get near half what I paid for them, and that part really sucks. This is a perfect video for people to hear. Thank you and god bless.

Great advice. I have sure learned the hard way, few weeks ago I went to my local LV boutique to repair my 6 key holder. And for whatever reason I decided to try on the Pochette Metis in monogram, after trying on on the bag. The SA says to me that the bag just got in this morning, I know in my heart of heart I do not need the bags but decided to get it anyway. Then the SA said how do you want to pay? Cash or Card? Then I ask myself do you really need the bag or just because some of your friends have it? I kindly told her sorry I think I'll pass on this one. Great content as always

It may be true but its rather ridiculous.

Not judging but because of the pandemic this past Christmas there were long lines outside of LV and Burberry. The mall I like is an open mall called Oak Brook and it was cold. Sadly the majority of the people I saw looked poor. I hope that whatever they purchased made them happy. When I was young and poor I had one Payless purse. I was just as happy then as I was when I bought my first LV in 2003. Not about the purse LOL I mean in my life.

Luxury goods companies purposely raise their prices every year in order to create an urgency for their customers to buy now. In other words, if a potential customer doesn't buy the desirable Rolex watch or luxury handbag today, it will cost more money if they buy it next year or 2 years down the road. It's basically creating a psychological FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) for their prospective customers.

I've got preloved bags and only a few that I paid retail, but then again I got them reduced. I've got enough to be happy with. There's always someone with more, or to their minds, better or newer. A few weeks back I got my nails done (don't usually do this but it was a bonding thing with a friend) and she had the latest Gucci camera style bag which was a particular shade of blue, and then I saw it twice again in the same place! There weren't many women in this nail place, and I thought: what's the point? If so many have the latest it's no longer special.
It's just new, but that novelty will fade soon. All of these women paid full retail price, it's a LOT of $.
Meanwhile I have some bags that are not sought after bags except by a minority. For example Morabito is based in Paris and top quality. Few know this, so I could get bargains in preloved market. It's a very brand-driven logo-driven phenomenon which I steer clear of except for one LV bag which I bought originally to flip. But it turns out I actually like it, it's the LV Alma PM in monogram and I like the shape as I'm tall and slim. The bigger size suits me. Most people seem to assume it's a fake but it isn't. How ironic! lol!

Is call maturity. The you tube influencers gives a false sense that luxury items are “investment”. But we all have to go through the crazy luxury shopping phases, then we realize our purchases are crazy waste of money. If you look at all the purses in your closet, rather than looking at them as investment or collection, look at how much money is locked in those items that are just sitting in your closet. Instead of $6K on a bag, how about use that money to buy stocks. Instead owning 10 bags, how about limit to 3, and you are going to use the value out of it. It’s so hard to have discipline on luxury shopping! Slowly weaning ourselves off the craze.

    • @ColourfulNoir

They’re not. Unless your job is to buy for clients or you have a huge social media following, it is very unlikely you will break even on a handbag unless you’re going to sit on it for x amount of years. Better to invest in stock market or real estate but unfortunately that doesn’t really draw a huge following.

But 2020 will mark a new area ... this is why we all were stoped and had to reflect .
It is of good business practices to take inventories periodically ...and correct our mistakes.

Wise thoughts. I made the same mistake when I watched UA-cam content that focused on hauls and luxury items I thought I really needed. I went on a Chanel earrings phase. Now I hardly wear any of them and regret the money I could’ve saved for a real gold item instead of costume jewelry. That’s the danger of social media influence. You always have to be aware of it if you’re gonna watch that content. Good advice!

I really enjoy your videos because these are not crazy luxury shopping in a day. You have made very good points. I believe balance in life is very important. A Long lasting happiness does not come from buying luxury items. Yes luxury item does give you happiness when done carefully and agin in balance. I love watching luxury hauls but have only couple of luxury items in my collection. I have been wanting to buy Love Bracelet but given I am a physician and typically no jewelry, mostly scrubs :) I have been wondering if it’s worth the investment. I can’t wrap my head around how some ladies spends $20,000- 30,000 in one day. I see a luxury UA-camrs says luxury handbags etc are a good investment, I believe luxury items are only to give you happiness which is important but an investment. You can invest in stocks with much higher return if you are mostly interested in investment.

This is such useful advice. When you look at the millions of IGers out there, they are constantly buying .... I don’t know about the selling though. I have to wonder how they’re finding their luxury purchases. So many of them have several Chanel handbags, they’re constantly doing hauls of clothes bought from Zara plus a few luxury belts or shoes.... I can’t imagine that every IGer is making tonnes so I can only conclude they must be in serious debt unless they have a seriously good day job that supports that .... but given their age and the fact they’ve not founded Uber or Deliveroo ... I doubt it. Not to mention the lack of sustainability when it comes to frivolous purchasing for the sake of a few likes on a photo.

hi Eileen, thank you so much for sharing , exactly what i have been through along my luxury bag journey. Wasted so much money and things doesn't really change for the past 10 years.
i was in the credit card debt as well, just because of owing a luxury bag.
However, its ok for me to see people doing unboxing, i feel happy for them. Just that i am more wiser in spending my money.
I started to practicing minimal lifestyle in where i noted its such a chaos and troublesome when i want to move out with plenty of things inside the house or wardrobe .
Happy to see your sharing and thank you for your sincere thought as well.
    Happy New year

I definitely can related. I wish I saw your video a bit earlier. I did make some similar mistakes. I thought to myself the bag wasn’t too special. The hardware color wasn’t what I want. The SA told me how limited and hard to get that bag was. I left the store. But still thinking about it. So my husband went back and bought for me. After a few days. I bought same bag with nicer color. And now I regretted it. And even with new condition. I checked to sell online. And look like I’m gonna loose over $1000 . If I saw your video earlier. I should know I should go care much if the bag hard to get according to the SA. I should only get what I like. If I know the bag wasn’t what I really want. I should just walk away. Thanks for sharing. I find it very helpful. And btw you have very nice Hermes collection. Practical and easy to wear.

Hi Eileen (sorry if I misspelled your name, just saw how other people spell it, please, feel free to correct me)! Thank you for your thoughts - I think most of the conclusions you came to are valid to most people, but I have 2 questions:
    - why you call all these "regrets"? I mean those decisions made you a person you are now, and it looks like you found piece, learned some lessons and enjoy your time now. Do you think it might have been possible to achieve such results without your previous experience?
    - a second question is a consequence of the first one: do you think it is possible to to learn those lessons on someone else's experience (like a young girl could watch you video or several videos like yours and change her behaviour)?
Don't get me wrong, I don't think such videos are useless. I personally enjoy watching your videos and similar videos on UA-cam, but I am also approaching a state where I've learned some lessons (and it's great to know through UA-cam videos that someone has passed the same and feels great now), but I don't see them as regrets - I am happy to pay those money to be able to understand that luxury items don't change anything inside me, to understand my style, to understand my values etc. Those lessons seem to be more valuable then the money I "lost"...
    What's your opinion on that?

    • @ColourfulNoir
      @ColourfulNoir  3 роки тому +1

Great questions! I certainly think my experiences have influenced me to become who I am today. However, the truth is, you don't know what you don't know. So I certainly think if I was told these at a younger age, I would have shopped a lot more mindfully. Just like investing, I would have started a lot sooner if I enlightened myself earlier with reading and exploring. This is why a lot of people would say the same, they wish they had started investing earlier and respecting the value of money. I truly believe in early education about these topics, which is why I'm also trying to teach my little one and hopefully he will have to not learn from too many mistakes xx

I can relate to shopping and feeling fulfilled for a few days and on to more purchases after. I've experienced one Louis Vuitton wallet that peeled and cracked. Never did I want anything from LV again.
I'm NOT into acquiring a collection of bags. A collection would overwhelm me. I must admit, I have had ZERO regrets due to a resolution I made a years ago. I return immediately what I don't wear. I know the stores return policy and make a decision by the end date to prevent regret and impulse purchases.

Your video is so insightful, i have been thinking for some time, why i spend so much on luxury bags when the “happiness” that came with the purchase only lasted a few days... then its another bag on the shelf that i neglect or another bag i use... thats one of the reasons I havent purchased a bag for 2 years. I’m using my existing stash which makes me happy too.

Thanks for sharing your advice with such honesty. I think the biggest takeaway is to not allow luxury brands to define who we are. It’s so easy these days to let the social media fuel our desire for the latest and ‘most sought after’ pieces, to the point that we get desensitized with the huge price tags and consider them normal splurges just because many others have them. Learning to be content with a few classic pieces that we really love and will wear for a long time takes a lot of wisdom and discipline!

All good points. Actually, social media influence has its good and bad points. For me, IM will influence you more without really thinking because it’s all Eye candy photos but with UA-cam like this one, I get to see people reviews, their thoughts and experiences with the item and this helped me a lot deciding on that next luxury piece.

When I was young I could not afford any luxury bags. I bought a few fakes at the Flea market, that were poor quality, and quickly stopped using them, as they fell apart. Graduated from college and all through my 30' and 40's I had money and quickly bought authentic Chanel, LV, Fendi, Gucci, and on and on. I was hooked Thousands of dollars sat in my closet, including a Maxi double flap I purchased for $3,800, as I could not and did not use all of these bags often, just a few favorites. Now prices are ridiculous and keep going up. These companies encourage addiction (of course they do) and embrace bloggers & young people to buy and want these items. Now in my late 40's I find a closet with thousands and thousands of dollars sitting. I ended up selling everything, and only kept 5 of my favorite bags. Now I buy a occasional triple A/mirror replica when the urge comes over me to have the new "it" bag. I have found the replicas are NOT what they once were some are so so well done, and some even made better than my authentic, and because of this I am comfortable carrying them . I can go on about my authentic LV Metis having a coating issue and cracking and multiple trips to LV to fix the issue, and hardware on my authentic YSL that fell apart. I have expensive jewelry and use both my authentic items and replicas and no one knows. I've even had compliments in the Gucci and Chanel shops when I wear my replicas and sales people rush over to me all the time. I have a large diamond wedding ring and expensive watches and no one knows the bag I might be carrying that day is a replica. Granted, I will say I can tell the difference mostly by feel of leather grade and the inside details, but otherwise you just cannot tell, unless you feel and look very closely, even then its not easy to see the difference!
I would rather spend my money on investment for retirement and experiences! That large Chanel 19 price is a nice 10 day cruise! I would encourage those on the designer handbag trap to ask yourself this:" Which adds more to my life a thing or experience??? The answer was clear to me.
