I’m 45, I used to get in some squabbles when I was younger, my pops made me listen to this and asked me after what’s this song about? I said “ idk stealing from someone” he said no son the moral of the story is there will always be somebody coming for the big man on the block and the cycle never ends.

Jim Croce was an amazing storyteller and one of my dad's favorite musicians. I knew all of his songs by the age of nine... but for a different vibe 'Time in a Bottle', 'Operator', and 'I Got a Name' always get me a bit choked up. Though all of Jim's songs do since my dad passed away in March of '22. He used to tell me all the stories of where he was in life when Jim's songs would come on the radio for the first time. His musicality and talent stands the test of time. It's sad that Jim was lost at 30, before all his stories were told.💔

"But he stronger than a country hoss" "Hoss" is a Southers US slang for "horse". It's often used to refer to a big, strong and respected or dependable person, usually a man; one who is large like a horse.

Real guy. Croce wrote real. South side Chicago ain't nothing to mess with then and now, tougher back then. No guns, fight for it.

My dad would play a lot of Jim Croce when I was a kid in the 80s, Don't Mess Around With Jim, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, and Operator all taught me important lessons. His son which was 2 when he passed became a singer-songwriter and is finally preforming his fathers songs. He sounds so much like his dad its crazy

And he passed away the same year he released Time In a Bottle that he wrote upon finding out his wife was finally pregnant after undergoing fertility treatments. It wasn’t released until November 1973, two months after he died, and became his second number 1 hit.

If it makes it easier to understand, the second line in the chorus was actually an old saying "you don't PISS into the wind", but radio stations couldn't play that naughty fucking word back then!

This is the shit...😎😎So many great songs. Hit Roller Derby Queen, I Got A Name, Workin' At The Car Wash Blues...You don't tug on Superman's cape. You don't spit in to the wind. You don't pull the mask off the ol' Lone Ranger and you don't mess around with Slim...🔥🔥

Jim Croce was from the Philly area and a Villanova Univ. grad. Great musician and storyteller, truly a sad day when he passed away in a plane crash. Favorite from Jim was a bittersweet Christmas holiday classic “ It doesn’t have to be that Way”.

Jim's songs were great. He had the ability to write great ballads. But songs like this were what he called Character songs. These songs are based on the people he met when he was on the road. Somewhere in my home I still have an LP with many of his Character songs like Rapid Roy that Stockcar boy and the Tophat Bar and Grill.

This man's songs remind me of my life, growing up, swimming in lakes, eating watermelon and getting all sticky! One of your listeners, seth mcconnell called it. You gotta listen to One Less set of footsteps, Cigarettes, Whiskey and Wild Wild Women, Roller Derby Queen, and last but definitely not least Operator. He died young, but he sure left a legacy that won't fade away... maybe until we do. I hope channels like yours keep songs like these alive!

In NYC, uptown is Harlem, the Bowery, especially back in the day is where the homeless, & the super cheap fleabag rooms could be Renee by the night..or the hour. 42nd st was what you saw in old movies, when they show you the seedy side, porn theaters, peep shows, and other cultural attractions.

Yaaaas ! This song never gets old ! Sooo good ! Thx for featuring it. I think he said “stronger than a country horse” . But he pronounce it “haws” so it’d rhyme with “boss”. Do u remember the show The Line Ranger ? I do …. Just barely. I bet you're too young to have heard of it. Anyway , he wore a mask. Was a super hero of sorts. Chk out Jim Croce ‘s incredibly talented son , AJ Croce !! You’ll flip ! Truly a heavy wrigh in his own right! NO doubt ! He’s toured with BB King, Aretha, & Ray Charles ! AJ is on tour right now. Ya GOTTA see him & his all star band ! Road trip ? Totalllllly worth it. I saw him a month ago & was blown away ! Obsessed now. Been a fan of his Dad's since I was a kid. Chk out Jim Croce ‘s song , Roller Derby Queen. AJ plays it, too !

Best reaction to this song. How can anyone listen to that clean, strutting’ beat and rhythm without moving around and grinning in beyond me! For your own enjoyment, give a listen to “Working at the Car Wash Blues”. Croce was quite the guy. When he was current, I was slugging my way from working class into lower middle class, as were most young people in Canada. Jobs aplenty, boundless opportunities for anyone who wasn’t afraid to work hard and half a brain. Wonder how he’d do in this new woke world? Jeez…I’m starting to sound like my grandma. Which is ok I guess…I’m her age now!🤣🤣🤣🤣🇨🇦Great job!
